What is a "Liberal" and a "Conservative"?

In today's volatile political climate, we often hear conservative people saying that "liberals" are
"trash" or horrible people (which could not be farther from the truth). In fact, looking at the actual definitions from dictionary.com, you'll see that liberals welcome everyone, new ideas and want to learn, while conservatives want no progress, do not welcome others, do not favor education or new ideas and want to keep living the same way they had in the past.
  Here are the definitions. Which one would YOU prefer to be known as?
We'll take being known as the educated, caring, welcoming progressive liberal, thank you.

Conservative  adjective
1. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.

2. a preservative.

Liberal adjective
1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
2. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism, especially the freedom of the individual and governmental guarantees of individual rights and liberties.

I'm a simple guy who enjoys the simple things in life, especially our dogs.
