Spain Blog #61: Welcome to Sitges!
|
Tom and Rob at the Sitges Beach |
In today's Spain blog, we'll introduce you to a beach town called Sitges. You'll learn some of the basics in this blog and in the next blog we'll take you to the Bacardi factory museum. Here, though, you'll learn about what makes Sitges popular (other than the Gin and Tonics that Tom and Gary enjoyed)!

Stiges Beach |
During our 2 day stay in Sitges, the temperatures were only in the 60s (Fahrenheit) so it was too cool to sit on the beach. I (Rob) even wore a sweatshirt one day.
WHERE IS SITGES? Sitges is a coastal town in Spain's Catalonia region, southwest of Barcelona, backed by the mountainous Parc Natural del Garraf. Located just 30 minutes south of Barcelona, Sitges has been described as the Saint-Tropez of Spain thanks to its glitzy beach crowd and lively nightlife.

SAW A COMMERCIAL FILMING - When we visited, there was a commercial being filmed on the beach. There were trailer trucks
and techs set up lights, a dinner table, and brought bottles of wine so we assume that was the topic of the spot.

LGBT FRIENDLY, BEACHES, HORROR FESTIVAL - Sitges is renowned for its LGBT-friendly atmosphere as well as its world-famous horror film festival, Sitges has plenty to offer visitors. It's known for its Mediterranean beaches and seafront promenade lined with grand mansions. The compact old town and surrounding streets are filled with shops, restaurants, and many gay bars and nightclubs.
Two places we didn't get to were the Maricel Museum and Cau Ferrat Museum that showcase Catalan and other Spanish art.

THE CATHEDRAL - Although the Church of Sant Bartomeu & Santa Tecla was closed when we visited, we did stop for a picture of it. It's on a hill that overlooks two beaches. It is between the beaches of Playa de la Fragata and Playa de San Sebastian, so it can be seen from many locations. It's located at Plaça de l'Ajuntament, 20, 08870 Sitges, Barcelona, Spain.
