Spain Blog #60: Seville: The Abandoned World Expo Site

In today's blog about our trip to Spain, we'll take you on a bike tour of the remains of Seville, Spain's Expo '92.

In our DETOURS vacation, our great tour guide, Dan Clarke arranged for bicycle rentals and he took us to the abandoned
Expo 1992. For urban explorers, it’s the kind of fascinating modern decay.

ABOUT THE EXPO - Opening in April, 1992, Expo ’92 was Spain’s way of showing off all it had accomplished in the 1980s. Expo buildings covered many acres of La Isla de La Cartuja in Seville and over one hundred countries were represented, including many massive pavilions. 

OPEN FOR 6 MONTHS - 41 million people visited over the 6 months it was open. Most, but not all, the pavilions were demolished. Many other facilities remain, gathering dust and weeds and rust.

PART OF IT IS IN USE - Cartuja 93, a tech and research park, occupies much of the land that was Expo ‘92. This makes exploring the area a fascinating mix of new buildings and aging leftover exhibits. The monorail track is gone, though stations remain, now just oddities taking up space in parking lots for those that work in Cartuja 93.

A "NASA ROCKET" - We found it interesting that a "NASA Rocket" exhibit was actually a column of painted concrete. It was painted white to resemble a rocket, although weather exposed the cement!
