1941 "Shazam" Actor Tom Tyler's Accomplished but Tragically Short Life

Yesterday I wrote about the the 1941 movie serial called "The Adventures of Captain
Marvel" that featured actor Tom Tyler as a fantastic portrayal of Shazam, the original Captain Marvel and Frank Coughlin Jr. played a great Billy Batson, Shazam's alter ego. Tom Tyler only lived to 50 years old, while Frank passed in his early 90s. Today's blog will look at the short life of handsome Tom Tyler. Read on!

Tom Tyler (born Vincent Markowski, August 9, 1903 – May 1, 1954) was an American actor known for his leading roles in low-budget Western films in the silent and sound eras, and for his portrayal of superhero Captain Marvel in the 1941 serial film The Adventures of Captain Marvel. Tyler also played the mummy in 1940's The Mummy's Hand, a popular Universal Studios monster film.

WEIGHTLIFTER - Tyler was an amateur weightlifter sponsored by the Los Angeles Athletic Club during the late 1920s. He set a new world's amateur record for the right-hand clean and jerk by lifting 213 pounds (97 kg). In 1928, he won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) heavyweight weightlifting championship, lifting 760 pounds (340 kg)—a record that stood for fourteen years.

CAREER - His first starring role was in Let's Go Gallagher (1925). In the next four years, he starred in 28 additional Westerns for FBO. In 1929, Tyler signed with Syndicate Pictures, where he made his last eight silent films in 1929 and 1930. He worked for several other motion picture companies and then went to Republic Pictures in 1941.
(He made MANY films! You can see the list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Tyler)

During this period Republic, which failed to secure the rights to Superman, purchased the rights to another comic book superhero, Captain Marvel. In his late thirties at the time, Tyler was still in good shape and was offered the title role at $250 per week for four weeks' work. In the title role in The Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941), Tyler portrayed the first film adaptation of a comic book superhero.

CRIPPLING ILLNESS - In 1943, the forty-year-old Tyler was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis. He was physically limited to occasional supporting roles in Western films. He moved on to television and the last screen appearance by Tom Tyler was playing a "District Marshal" on the television series "Steve Donovan, Western Marshal." The episode called "Comanche Kid" premiered on January 14, 1956, but had been filmed as a pilot in 1950. In it, Tyler had difficulty drawing his gun because of his arthritis.

HIS PASSING - Suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis and nearly destitute, Tyler moved back to Hamtramck and lived with his sister, Katherine Slepski, during the last year of his life. He died on May 3, 1954 of heart failure and complications from scleroderma at the age of 50. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.

Enjoyable DVD: Adventures of Captain Marvel (1940s Movie Serial Collection)

I recently enjoyed the DVD collection called "Adventures of Captain Marvel,'" that features the DC Comics Superhero Shazam, the original Captain Marvel.  This 2 DVD set collects the 12-episode movie serials from the 1940s of the hero and was wonderful to watch. Each episode is twenty minutes.
They were originally shown in movie theaters before the main features. I remember my dad talking about these and the Superman and Batman movie serials of the 1940s.
The collection is really well done, and the villain is called "the Scorpion." Although I don't recall that villain from the comics, it was a good story line.
The lead actors who played both Shazam and Billy Batson really took the role seriously, and kept in character. This is truly a classic and a must for all superhero fans.

STORY LINE -On a scientific expedition to Siam young Billy Batson is given the ability to change himself into the super-powered Captain Marvel by the wizard Shazam, who tells him his powers will last only as long as the Golden Scorpion idol is threatened. Finding the idol, the scientists realize it could be the most powerful weapon in the world and remove the lenses that energize it, distributing them among themselves so that no one would be able to use the idol by himself. Back in the US, Billy Batson, as Captain Marvel, wages a battle against an evil, hooded figure, the Scorpion, who hopes to accumulate all five lenses, thereby gaining control of the super-powerful weapon.

BACKGROUND OF THE FILM SERIAL - Considered by many to be the finest serial ever made, Adventures of Captain Marvel chronicles the exploits of Captain Marvel (Tom Tyler, The Phantom). Highlighting the serial are the fabulous flying sequences by Republic's ace special effects team, Howard Lydecker and Theodore Lydecker.

Combining a wired dummy photographed against real backgrounds in natural sunlight, with spectacular take-off leaps and landings supplied by action ace David Sharpe, the final effects are still as fascinating today as they were in 1941.

Adventures of Captain Marvel marked the very first time a comic book superhero's exploits were transferred to the silver screen, and the resulting 12-chapter serial has yet to be equaled in excitement and entertainment. Directed by the great team of William Witney and John English.

***************************
The only thing I didn't appreciate was the lack of a menu on the 2 discs... If you removed the disc without watching all 6 episodes straight through, you had to fast forward through the earlier episodes to get to where you left off. (Maybe I got a bootlegged copy from Amazon for some reason... I don't know).

Karma and Ignorance is Fatal for 2 More People Claiming COVID-19 was a Hoax

When you're blinded by science deniers, you put yourself and others in jeopardy. Don't listen to them and instead, save yourself and others. This time it was fatal for 2 people who blindly follow conservative news and politicians who claimed the virus was a "hoax" and a political ploy.
A couple of weeks ago, I highlighted a story about a Louisiana preacher who claimed that COVID19 virus was a "Democratic hoax" to hurt the president's re-election bid. He denied science, listened to right-wing radio hosts and spokespeople and Fox News, held services, caught COVID19 and died. Now, a  Texas woman  and Ohio man who thought the same thing and didn't believe it was real, paid the ultimate price. Here's the story (and you can verify this on snopes, too). BOTTOM LINE: Those who deny science and medicine put themselves AND OTHERS in mortal danger by denying the fatalism of this disease.
Here's the story -

Texas woman claimed COVID-19 is a media hoax  and can be stopped by “faith.” Days later she died.
She said more people have died in cross-stitching accidents than coronavirus infections. Now COVID-19 has killed her.

A Texas woman who mocked the coronavirus pandemic on Facebook as a media hoax has died from COVID-19 two weeks later.

The pandemic is “controlled” by “radical people in powerful places,” Karen Kolbe Sehlke posted. She also added that “cross stitching accidents” have “probably” killed more people than the virus that’s killing thousands of people worldwide. “With deep sadness and Broken Hearts we share with you that Karen Kolb Sehlke, a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend to all that knew her, went to be with our Lord when she passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 2, 2020,” her friends wrote in a GoFundMe appeal to cover her burial costs.
“Karen became very sick and was admitted to the hospital near her home in Tomball Tx earlier this week. She fought hard until her body just could not fight anymore. Karen was a BRIGHT LIGHT, the LIFE of the party, an amazing friend, but above this a hands on, caring, loving mom and devoted wife.”

Sehlke was a Donald Trump supporter who bought into the GOP messaging that the pandemic was being politicized and overblown in an effort to hurt the president’s re-election chances.
SHE WROTE ON HER FACEBOOK PAGE:  “If you think for one second this ‘pandemic’ is not media driven, and controlled by the radical people in powerful places… well… go back to sleep under the rock you crawled out from,” she wrote. “Wake up!!! This is what the beginning of socialism looks like! They are crashing the stock market to run on a failing economy, because it’s all they have left,” she added.  You don’t need hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and Lysol. You need common sense, a sense of direction, faith, a will to fight, and of course guns!”

After news of her death spread, the family edited their GoFundMe to remove that she died from COVID-19 and instead said the details of how she died are not public. They noted that her family is in quarantine and people can deliver them food – if they leave it outside the home to prevent the further potential spread of the disease. They’re providing hand sanitizer wipes outside for anyone who delivers food.

Ohio man, 60, who blasted COVID-19 lockdown as 'political ploy'  dies after contracting coronavirus

The UK Daily Mail and the Ohio Marion Star reported that a 60-year-old Ohio man who dismissed the state’s coronavirus lockdown as a ‘political ploy’ and claimed the governor didn’t have the authority to close businesses because of the pandemic has died of COVID-19.
John W. McDaniel tested positive for the coronavirus in late March and died at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus last Wednesday.
On Facebook, he had dismissed the killer virus as a 'political ploy' that he said officials were using to exert control over the public.

Think Before you Act

People need to think before they act.
Here are some pictures of people who can't understand what social distancing means, even when a pigeon does. There's also a governor who can't figure out how to put on a mask during the pandemic. They need to think before they do something.

Returning Idiot of the Week: "Ingest or Inject Disinfectant in your body to cure virus"

WH Briefing on April 23, 2020
This week's idiot is a returning champion. Even Fox News reports a big spike in calls (click for link) to poison control centers from people who listened to this insane "advice."
During a press conference on April 25th, you know who recommended ingesting or injecting disinfectant in the BODY to kill Coronavirus (COVID19).
Doctors and scientists warn that will KILL you. Even Lysol brand disinfectant had to rush and put out a press release warning people not to do that:  Dettol And Lysol Maker Warns Against Drinking And Injecting Disinfectant After Trump Suggestion (click to see story)
(You know there will be people who do, because they think you know who is a "savior."). In today's blog, you can see the VIDEO from that Press conference and the story about this gigantic IDIOT.

Here's the story:
Coronavirus: medical experts denounce Trump's theory of 'disinfectant injection'
Doctors warn US president’s musings on disinfectant as a cure for coronavirus could lead to death
UK Guardian Newspaper April 24, 2020

Donald Trump has stunned viewers by suggesting that people could receive injections of disinfectant to cure the coronavirus, a notion one medical expert described as “jaw-dropping”.

At Thursday’s White House coronavirus taskforce briefing, the US president discussed new government research on how the virus reacts to different temperatures, climates and surfaces.

“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute,” Trump said. “One minute! And is there a way we can do something, by an injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that. So, that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me.”

Dr Deborah Birx, the taskforce response coordinator, remained silent. But social media erupted in hilarity and outrage at the president, who has a record of defying science and also floated the idea of treating patients’ bodies with ultraviolet (UV) light.

Several doctors warned the public against injecting disinfectant or using UV light.

Robert Reich, a professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley and a former labor secretary, tweeted: “Trump’s briefings are actively endangering the public’s health. Boycott the propaganda. Listen to the experts. And please don’t drink disinfectant.”

VIDEO: https://youtu.be/hrB3EuUcVDE

Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics, added: “It is incomprehensible to me that a moron like this holds the highest office in the land and that there exist people stupid enough to think this is OK. I can’t believe that in 2020 I have to caution anyone listening to the president that injecting disinfectant could kill you.”

Trump was already facing a backlash over his championing of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, as a therapy for the coronavirus, a quixotic effort amplified by the conservative network Fox News. Research has found no evidence that it is beneficial and a government vaccine expert has claimed he was fired for limiting its use.

Undeterred, on Thursday Trump showcased an “emerging result” from Department of Homeland Security research that indicates coronavirus appears to weaken more quickly when exposed to sunlight, heat and humidity, raising hopes that it could become less contagious in summer months.

Best reusable Dog Diapers and How to Make it BETTER!

Back in November, I published a blog about the best reusable dog diaper for dogs. Today, I'll share some additional insight about how to not have to wash it every day.
Our girl Dolly, a Weimaraner (70 lbs). who turned 15 years old this past Nov. 29th became incontinent and dribbles whenever she lays down. Since washing her bed daily wasn't an easy thing to do, I looked into disposable diapers. They always slipped off and didn't fit right.

FOUND THE BEST, COMFORTABLE HARNESS - Our canine acupuncturist, Marcie Baer told me about a velcro and cloth diaper that also affixes around the dog's chest/neck area. The diaper/harness is called Stay Put Unisex dog Diaper (cloth) ("#D165020) from "In Company of Dogs" and it is amazing. It was $57 with shipping. ALSO, buy 2 of them, because if you forget to change the pad and it soaks through, you can quickly put on the second diaper (and insert an absorbent pad) and wash the second one.

The harness is easy to affix because of the velcro straps around the neck and around the diaper part. Dolly doesn't mind it at all - and sleeps with it on. This is the best ever if your Weimaraner or small to medium sized-dog is incontinent.

THE TRICK - ADD AN ABSORBENT PAD TO IT! As a gay guy, I don't know anything about absorbent pads for women, so I had to try out a few different types in Dolly's diaper. The one that works the best are the Poise pads. They have a gel in them and absorb a lot more urine without soaking through to the cloth diaper. I highly recommend putting one of these in the diaper with the top of the pad JUST below the tail hole of the diaper. This works so well. When one part gets full, turn it around and use the other side.

AT NIGHT- because she also does #2 in her sleep- I put a disposable boys diaper on her (Twilight brand from Target, Size L/XL, but have to cut out a hole for her tail.). Around the tail hole I put duct tape to prevent the little white absorbent particles from flaking out on the floor.

TRIED THE PEE PADS - I tried the pee pads but it was continual washing, and sometimes when she lay down, she'd spin around and move the pee pads, peeing on the actual bed. That meant taking the bed apart and washing the cover and the pee pads! I also tried putting towels and blankets over the pee pads to keep them steady, but those were also moved and peed on.

Disposable kid's diaper for the overnight to prevent #2 accidents
ADDITIONAL DIAPER AT NIGHT - If your dog also does number 2 in their sleep, you can also use a regular human children's diaper.  Since Dolly is 70 lbs, she uses the L/XL brand of Target "Twilite" diapers.  I cut a tail hole in the back part, and put her tail through, then WRAP the cloth diaper harness and put her tail through the back, so her tail holds up the diaper.
Once on, slide the cloth harness back straps through the disposable diaper and velcro them to the top of the diaper, keeping it secure over night.

Archaeology! ‘Wonderchicken’ fossil reveals ancestor of today’s birds

I love dinosaurs and archaeology, and always get excited whenever there's a new find. On March 18, 2020, Nature Magazine reported a new find of an ancestor to today's birds. Here's the story from the Los Angeles Times.

Wonderchicken’ fossil reveals ancestor of today’s birds

By ASSOCIATED PRESS  MARCH 18, 2020

A tiny fossil skull nicknamed “Wonderchicken” is giving scientists a rare glimpse at early ancestors of today’s birds. It may be the oldest known fossil from this group.

With a face like those of today’s chickens and chicken-like birds and a back portion like that of living ducks and duck-like birds, Wonderchicken is “down near the bottom of the modern-bird family tree,” said Daniel Field of Cambridge University.

He and others announced the find in a report released Wednesday by the journal Nature. They named the creature Asteriornis maastrichtensis, but let’s stick with Wonderchicken.

Found in Belgium, it is some 66.7 million to 66.8 million years old. A previously reported Antarctic fossil find is about as old, but its precise age and place on the evolutionary tree are not clear. Field said the Belgian skull was slightly older. The leg bones let researchers estimate the creature was the size of a very small duck, weighing only about 14 ounces (395 grams). Its legs were long and slender, and it was evidently a shore bird and could probably fly, Field said.

“Wonderchicken” in its habitat

Wonderchicken lived just before the asteroid impact that’s blamed for killing off many species, most notably the giant dinosaurs. That suggests the evolution of the family tree for modern-day-birds was in a very early stage when the asteroid struck, Field said.

Close relatives of Wonderchicken survived the cataclysm, and the fossil itself shows some traits that have been proposed as beneficial for making it through, Field said. It was small, and its legs suggest it did not live in trees, an important factor since forests were thought to have been devastated by wildfires.

“It also probably paid to not be picky about what you are eating,” since there wasn’t much on the menu in the aftermath of the asteroid strike, Field said. Wonderchicken’s beak shows no signs of a specialized diet, he said.

Scientists unconnected to the research were enthusiastic.

Kevin Padian, a paleontologist at UC Berkeley who wrote a commentary about the study, said the fossil provided the best evidence yet of when and how the earliest ancestors of today’s birds evolved.

Genetic studies have suggested that those ancestors appeared tens of millions of years earlier than Wonderchicken, he said. But at this point the fossil record shows no support for that, and there’s no known fossil that is clearly from this lineage that predates Wonderchicken, he said.

Julia Clarke, a fossil-bird expert at the University of Texas at Austin, said the fossil had “a lot of information that can start to add to our picture of the earliest steps” in the proliferation of living birds species.

Fossils are snapshots, she said, and “right now our photo album has almost nothing in it” from this time period that relates to modern-day birds. “Any new picture is of key importance.”

Great Cozy Mystery: Grave Errors by Carol J Perry

One thing I love about bookstores is to walk around and see what new paperbacks are available. I just
don't have the patience to scan through everything on-line, so a couple of months ago in Barnes and Noble I found "Grave Errors," a Witch City Mystery by Carol J. Perry. It was really enjoyable and I look forward to reading the rest in the series!
It turns out there are 10 books in the series, and "Witch City" is of course, Salem, Massachusetts, which is the setting for the book. The main character, Lee, is a teacher who prepares students of all ages for journalism. She has a "gift" to see "visions" associated with people she gets involved with, and they lead her to interesting discoveries- a perfect character for this kind of series. Her boyfriend is a Salem police officer and that comes in handy!
I couldn't wait to find out who the murderer was in this story. It's well-written and really has wonderful characters, from Lee's Aunt, to her various students. Lee tries to solve a student's sister's death, but winds up trying to solve another... and the method that a murderer used was totally unexpected and clever.  This is a great book!  5 of 5 stars! - Rob

ABOUT THE BOOK FROM AMAZON:  For residents of Salem, Massachusetts, the day after Halloween brings empty candy wrappers, sagging pumpkins, and a community-wide identity crisis. That is, until Lee Barrett’s TV production class suggests extending the spooky season with the traditional Mexican celebration Dia de Los Muertos. But when the students discover not all of Salem’s dead are resting in peace, the post-October blues don’t seem so bad after all . . .

As if a series of haunting graveyard visits isn’t disturbing enough, Lee and her policeman boyfriend connect the crime to an unsolved missing person case. Driven by a series of chilling psychic visions, Lee calls on her cleverest allies—including her shrewd cat, O’Ryan—to go underground and dig up the evidence needed to put a lid on a cold case forever . . . before the latest headstone in town has her name on it!

Toilet Paper Use in the U.S. vs. 2 other Countries

Since the COVID19 virus pandemic came to light in the U.S. in March (although it was known about
in December 2019), the real fear and understanding of it didn't surface until then. And that triggered a massive rush on stockpiling toilet paper! Recently, the Boston Globe looked into toilet paper usage in the U.S. versus 2 other countries and here's what they learned:

The amount of toilet paper the average American uses hasn’t changed; it’s still around 141 rolls per year (compared to 134 rolls in Germany and just 49 rolls in China, AlixParters says).

But even small changes in buying habits can throw everything into disarray.

The big three U.S. toilet paper companies — Georgia-Pacific LLC, Proctor & Gamble Co. and Kimberly-Clark Corp. — were already running their toilet paper plants 24 hours a day before the new coronavirus hit. That’s the only way they can make a profit on such a low-margin product.

ARE THERE WAYS TO CUT DOWN ON TOILET PAPER USE?
U.S. searches for “bidet” reached an all-time high in March, according to Google Trends. Tushy, which makes a $100 bidet attachment for toilets, said its sales spiked in mid-March 2020, hitting $1 million in a single day. Sales are still running 10 times ahead of projections.

Helpful Info: Which Legal Docs Should I have in Case of Emergency?

Advance planning is always a good thing, and although we don't like to think about accidents, or an early end to our lives, it's also important for those we leave behind. We put together a will years ago and powers of attorney, just in case. You should, too. Here's a run-down of what's recommended.  >>>

A Guide To Estate Planning During The Coronavirus Pandemic
Who will make decisions about your finances and health (maybe even your life) if you get COVID-
Casey Bond, Huffington Post
04/07/2020 08:26pm EDT | Updated 42 minutes ago

The coronavirus pandemic undoubtedly has you on edge. We’ve all been forced to face our fears in some way, whether it’s the fear of falling ill, losing a job or having to spend time alone. With all these anxieties and unknowns weighing on your mind, it might feel like there’s suddenly a pressing need to get your affairs in order ― just in case.

Though most people who contract COVID-19 experience mild symptoms, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared if you do need to be hospitalized. It can feel scary thinking about getting sick or not being able to make decisions for yourself, but an estate plan is meant to ease your fears. After all, wouldn’t you feel better knowing that the burden of making health and financial decisions will never fall on unprepared family members?

The truth is that just about everyone should have an estate plan, even if there is no looming health threat. So if you don’t have one, there’s no better time than now to put it together.

Documents Needed For An Estate Plan
Anyone over the age of 18 requires some level of estate planning, according to Eido Walny, founder of Walny Legal Group, LLC, an estate planning and asset protection law firm based in Milwaukee. And you might be surprised to know that wills and trusts aren’t always the most important documents to focus on first, especially if you’re single with no kids and limited wealth.

“Estate planning is more than just getting a will,” Walny said. A strong estate plan will also include several other important documents, such as a revocable trust (sometimes called a living trust), financial powers of attorney, health care powers of attorney, and more. “All of these documents are important and serve a role in the overall planning,” Walny said.

In light of the current situation, the two most important documents to have on hand are medical and financial powers of attorney, said Patrick Simakso, an elder law attorney and wealth preservation specialist at Simasko Law in Mount Clemens, Michigan. “You need someone who can do your banking or make your medical decisions if you are quarantined in your home, admitted to the hospital or become incapacitated,” he said.

Once you have those in place, it’s a good idea to work on putting together a comprehensive estate plan. Here’s a look at all the documents you should have and what they mean.

1. Financial Power of Attorney

A financial power of attorney document is a legal document that gives an agent the authority to carry on a person’s financial affairs and protect their property by acting on their behalf, according to David Bross, an Ohio-based attorney and certified specialist in estate planning, trust administration and probate, which is the legal process that unfolds when someone is incapacitated or dies. The FPOA gives the agent the ability to pay bills, write checks, make deposits, sell or purchase assets or sign any tax returns.

“Any competent adult can serve as your agent,” said Somita Basu, an estate planning and probate attorney based in the San Francisco Bay area. However, it should also be someone you trust to be honest, use common sense and be dependable. “Choose someone who is relatively nearby to manage the practical aspects of helping you with your finances,” she said. You should also choose a back-up agent in case your primary agent is unavailable.

Bross added that without an FPOA, there is no person with the ability to act on your behalf. “Family members will be required to request the probate court appoint a guardian to have these powers,” he said. “The court process can be time-consuming and expensive.”

2. Health Care Power of Attorney

Similar to a financial power of attorney, Bross explained that a health care power of attorney is a legal document that gives an agent the authority to make health care decisions on your behalf if you are incompetent or incapacitated. If you’re over the age of 18 and don’t have an HCPOA, your family members will have to request that the probate court appoint a guardian to have these powers.

3. Living Will (Advance Health Care Directive)

A living will ― also known as an advance health care directive ― allows you to specify what end-of-life treatment you do or don’t want to receive if you become terminally ill or permanently unconscious and won’t survive without the administration of life support, according to Bross.

“Without a living will, the decision to remove life support is left in the hands of your health care agent or family members,” Bross said. “This can be a very emotional decision for family members ― by creating a living will, you set forth your wishes and take that decision out of your family member’s hands.”

4. HIPAA Waiver

While your advance health care directive will likely contain language that allows your agents to access your medical records, Basu said it’s not uncommon for medical facilities to refuse access to medical information without a stand-alone HIPAA waiver. “As a back-up document, make sure you have a stand-alone HIPAA waiver to allow your nominated agents and family members to have access to your medical information so they can speak freely with your health care providers in case of a medical emergency or your incapacity,” she said.

5. Last Will And Testament

A last will and testament is a legal document that allows you to direct distribution of your property at the time of your death, Bross said. A will also allows you to appoint an executor, who oversees the distribution of your assets.

“Everyone has assets that must transfer after a person’s death,” he explained. “Without a will, there is no direction as to how those assets will pass.” If you don’t have a will in place, distribution of your assets will be handled by the state and the court will decide on the best person to oversee the administration of your estate.

A will also allows you to appoint a guardian to take care of minor children. Again, if you don’t have a will, a court will decide who is the best person to fulfill that role. “This limits a parent’s ability to have any say in the process,” Bross said.

6. Living Trust

Essentially, a revocable living trust is a legal contract that you make with yourself to create an entity to hold your assets, Basu explained. You can change your trust at any time (which is why it’s called “revocable”), and you can set it up to outlive you.

“If you become incapacitated or are unable to manage your estate, your living trust avoids the need for a court appointed conservatorship,” Basu said. You’ll appoint a successor trustee who steps in and manages your affairs without the involvement of the court, avoiding the extra time and money associated with probate. A trust also affords you privacy surrounding the details of your estate, since it avoids the need for probate, which is a public process.

Finally, Basu said that a living trust can help provide for the care, support and education of your children by turning over trust assets to them at an age chosen by you. For example, you could advise that your children receive their inheritance in graduated stages, like one-third of the principal at age 21, one-third at age 25 and one-third at age 30. “A living trust can leave your assets to your children in a manner that will reduce the ability of their creditors or ex-spouses to take your children’s inheritance from them,” Basu said.

“Since a good estate plan can save a lot of money, it is not a ripe area to pay as little as possible because mistakes can be costly.”

Is It Possible To Create A Will, Trust, Etc., Without A Lawyer?
Though there are several websites that make it possible to draft these documents for a low cost, it’s important to keep in mind that estate planning can be complex and it pays to have a professional review your plan. Aside from preparing documents and looking out for loose ends that need to be considered, a good estate planner will help with proper titling of assets such as real estate and vehicles, as well as designating beneficiaries for life insurance, retirement accounts and bank accounts.

“Since a good estate plan can save a lot of money, it is not a ripe area to pay as little as possible because mistakes can be costly,” Walny said.

If you aren’t sure where to find legal help, you can try searching the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils. Look for attorneys who have the estate planning law specialist (EPLS) designation, which means they’ve been highly vetted by the NAEPC. An accredited estate planner (AEP) designation is also helpful.

Of course, considering the staggering unemployment numbers we’re facing during the coronavirus pandemic, you may not have the money to hire a lawyer right now (it typically costs $1,000 to $2,000 to create an estate plan). That doesn’t mean you’re totally out of luck. Sites such as LegalZoom and Nolo can help you get basic documents in place for under $100 each. However, you should consider having a lawyer look at these items more closely down the road, especially if you have a large estate or are concerned someone might try to contest your will.

Another issue to keep in mind is that documents such as wills and powers of attorney have to be witnessed and notarized in order to be binding. The problem? During a pandemic, “it’s actually dangerous to one’s health to gather the necessary notary public and witnesses for the in-person execution of the documents,” said Ray Koenig III, an attorney and member of the litigation and tax and estate planning groups at law firm Clark Hill. In fact, many notary and attorney offices are closed due to shutdown orders.

Fortunately, many states such as Illinois and New York have recently enacted executive orders or statutes which allow for virtual notarization and witnessing of these documents. “That means that clients do not need to make a risky trek to their attorney’s office. Instead, with trained and skilled staff, an attorney can coordinate everything virtually,” Koenig said.

How To Organize And Store Your Documents
Once you have all your estate plan documents finalized, you need to be sure they’re kept safe but accessible to the right people.

- Give the originals to your lawyer. Bross said he recommends allowing your attorney to store original estate planning documents to ensure proper safekeeping. Typically, attorneys store these documents in fireproof safes in locked rooms. “If any of the originals are needed, the distributed copies usually have a stamp that alerts everyone where the originals are stored,” he said.

- Provide copies to the appropriate people. You should give copies of relevant documents to your financial adviser, treating physician, successor agents and any family members you want aware of your plans. Additionally, Bross said you should be sure anyone named in your documents to act on your behalf is aware. “Provide them with an explanation of the role they may play so they can be prepared,” he said.

- Keep high-quality scanned copies. In addition to making physical copies of your legal documents, you should also have digital files saved. In fact, you should do this for all important financial and legal paperwork, including anything related to homeownership, custody, estate planning, guardianship and child support. “A high-quality scan will make printing and copying these documents much easier,” Basu said.

- Label all your documents clearly. Don’t save your documents as “scan1,” “scan2,” and so on, as that will make organizing and finding them a nightmare. “Make sure everything is labeled accurately and includes dates the document was finalized or signed,” Basu said.

- Save a list of your digital accounts and passwords. Along with estate planning documents, everyone should maintain a list of their digital assets and how to access them, said Katie Von Kohorn, a partner at Casner & Edwards who specializes in trusts and estates.

- “In particular, if you access your financial accounts online ... it is vital that your loved ones know where these accounts are held,” she said. In addition, you should keep a list of your wishes regarding your other digital assets such as email, social media accounts, photographs in cloud storage, virtual currencies, credit card rewards, etc. Make sure that you share the passwords to these online accounts with someone so your family is able to retrieve and secure them should anything happen to you.

More Idiots of the Week People Protesting COVID19 Health Lockdowns

More MASSIVE IDIOTS around the country... and they're trying to open the country  (like the dimwit they praise) during a deadly pandemic.

Idiots of the Week: 4 Congressmen Vote Against Anti-Lynching Bill

1 of the 4 IDIOTS - Louie Gohmert of Texas
There are 4 idiots of the week! They are 4 Congressmen who voted against an anti-lynching bill. Yes, they are all white men, and all Republicans. Yes, they're racist.

After more than 100 years of trying to get through Congress, an anti-lynching bill that makes it a federal crime passed in the U.S, House on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020.

Who are the Idiots?:  Four lawmakers — Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Ted Yoho of Florida and Justin Amash of Michigan — voted against the measure, which passed 410-4, according to NPR.

Update On Our Sheltering and Our Canine Kids

Dash
During this pandemic time, we've been asked what's happening with our 4 dogs, and how we're coping. Well, this will fill you in!
Tyler

TYLER AND DASH-  Tyler the black and tan Dachshund is 9, and Dash the Dachshund/Chihuahua mix is 11, and both are active, walk 2-3 times a day, and are enjoying us being home.

OUR SENIOR DOGS - Our seniors are slowing down: Franklin, 16, red dachshund, and Dolly, 15, Weimaraner are still doing okay, but the months have brought less activity.

FRANKLIN -  Franklin isn't walking around the neighborhood anymore. Vet examined him and said another of the discs in his back has slipped, making his back feet weaker, and cross each other... so he has trouble standing and walking much.  He can walk about 10-20 feet before his back end falls down. He can barely stand straight, so I am now carrying him outside and holding up his tail so he can do #1 and 2 without  falling into it.

Franklin

He's peed on himself a couple of times as his legs weakened in the last 2 weeks. As that was happening he would fall over outside and just do his business on himself, which led to several baths in a row. So, now I carry him outside, and hold him up from the base of his tail (it doesn't hurt him)   Sometimes he uses his front legs to drag himself across the floor to the water bowl. Poor guy. He's also now on 2 pain meds. Franklin prefers to sleep during the day, moan a lot, and hang out at the water bowl (he drinks a lot, so he was tested for Cushing's disease and kidney failure, and thankfully both are negative).

DOLLY -   Dolly, surprisingly, and happily, still walks around the neighborhood on occasion (usually 1 time a day, at lunchtime). She can still climb up and downstairs (although now needs a little back support going up). I'm very proud of her.  She does wear a diaper all day for leakage, and a full diaper at night for #2 accidents (although with a tail hole, it doesn't always work). She's still happy, eating, and loves to cuddle with Tyler every day. She also walks up and downstairs about 1 time daily to stay with me as I telework upstairs.

Dolly

SO HOW ARE WE DEALING WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING?
Rob and Tom (yeah, it's from last year)
We only go to the grocery store once a week (and get groceries for Tom's folks and our friend). We are still exercising almost daily - we have weights at home, and Tom is dealing with my cooking and no outside meals (except for a Dunkin' Donuts drive thru for egg sandwiches, coffee and iced tea).  Every now and then we do a video chat with friends or family.

TOM - Is now brewing his own Iced Tea on the stove; and loves microwave popcorn now (I cook it for him in a pan, too). He has been checking out everything on Netflix, so if you have suggestions, let us know! Tom  misses his routine and going into the office.

Rob's new book - Case files of Inspired Ghost Tracking

ROB -   I am thriving on telework 5 days a week. I want to do this from NOW until I retire.
In addition, I'm working out daily, reading, blogging my 2 blogs (this one and my book blogs), and scheduling radio/you tube interviews about my new book "Case Files of Inspired Ghost Tracking," on Amazon.

Defying Science and Medicine Equals Death for a Virginia Pastor

Bishop Gerald O. Glen
As a scientist, it's infuriating how people feel they can deny science without consequences. This time it was fatal.
During this pandemic of the highly contagious COVID19 Virus it's astounding how many religious leaders have chosen ignorance and denied Science and Medical recommendations to social distance and NOT hold churches or congregations. Here is yet ANOTHER pastor who chose to act stupidly and held his church services in the Richmond, Virginia area, and is now DEAD from the COVID19 virus.
Kudos to the Pope, who gave mass in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome to an empty church. He understands. It's fools like this pastor, who didn't, and now his daughter is begging people to stay home. It's too late to learn when you're dead.
  Here's the story

Virginia pastor who defiantly held church service dies of coronavirus

He practiced what he preached — then he died of coronavirus.

An evangelical pastor died of COVID-19 just weeks after proudly showing off how packed his Virginia church was — and vowing to keep preaching “unless I’m in jail or the hospital.”

In his last known in-person service on March 22, Bishop Gerald O. Glenn got his congregation at Richmond’s New Deliverance Evangelistic Church to stand to prove how many were there despite warnings against gatherings of more than 10 people.

“I firmly believe that God is larger than this dreaded virus. You can quote me on that,” he said, repeating it a second time to claps, saying that “people are healed” in his church.

Happily announcing he was being “controversial” by being “in violation” of safety protocols — with “way more than 10 people” at the church — he vowed to keep his church open “unless I’m in jail or the hospital.”

“I am essential,” he said of remaining open, adding, “I’m a preacher — I talk to God!”

On Sunday, his church announced “with an exceedingly sorrowful and heavy heart” that the pastor had died a week after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

His wife, Marcietia Glenn, is also sick with the bug, with church members offering their prayers.

Their daughter, Mar-Gerie Crawley, told WTVR that her father initially dismissed his symptoms because he has a condition that often leads to fevers and infections.

She is now urging everyone to stay home.

“It becomes very real to you,” she told WTVR after her parents’ diagnoses.

“I just beg people to understand the severity and the seriousness of this, because people are saying it’s not just about us, it’s about everyone around us.”

Helping Arthritic Dogs Walk Better!

Dolly's leg wrapped
Our 15 year old Weimaraner, Dolly, has some pretty advanced arthritis in her legs and hips, but she still can walk up a flight of stairs on her own (because I keep her muscles working with walks).   However, her front right paw is bent from the arthritis, so she found it too painful to walk.  Here's what I did to help out.
First, I've wrapped self adhesive bandages around her ankles. In the beginning, that helped, because ankles tend to be the weakest part of the legs.
Dolly walking around the neighborhood wearing her bandage
When the ankle support didn't work anymore (because Dolly refused to walk past the front yard), I decided she needed a half leg wrap. Once I did that, she had enough support to walk again, and she really, really wanted to walk!
Once that was wrapped more, Dolly has been walking around the block again, twice a day. We had thought she no longer wanted to walk anymore until I re-wrapped it.
ANOTHER TIP- if your dog has arthritis in their legs and you take a walk, keep them on the grass all the time. Walking on the grass is softer than the pavement, and causes less discomfort during walks.
PAIN MEDICINE- Dolly is also on Galliprant, a pain medication, taken once every 24 hours to help control the pain levels.

How To Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer

Since the COVID19 outbreak, we have NOT been able to find hand sanitizer ANYWHERE (just like
toilet paper). Fortunately, the Huffington Post realizes that people have been hoarding those things, and interviewed a chemist to provide us and the rest of us (who don't hoard) with a recipe to make our own hand sanitizer. Here's how to do it!

How To Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer

Though washing your hands with plain old soap and water is the best way to keep them clean and prevent the spread of coronavirus, you don’t always have access to a sink. The next best thing is using hand sanitizer, but you need to be sure your ratios are correct when making it yourself, otherwise it isn’t effective.

Ajith Karunarathne, a cellular chemist and assistant professor in the University of Toledo’s department of chemistry and biochemistry, shared his recipe for hand sanitizer.

Start with isopropyl alcohol, which you may be able to find online at Walmart or Amazon if you don’t have it at home. Usually, isopropyl alcohol comes in either 90% or 95% concentration, according to Karunarathne, but anything 90% and above will work.

Mix three parts alcohol with one part aloe vera gel, which prevents your skin from drying out. (If you can’t find pre-made aloe gel, you can also scrape some out of the leaves of an aloe plant. Cut the sides of a leaf and remove the top skin. Using a spoon, scrape the gel out. In a high-speed blender, blend the collected gel for two to three minutes, then use a strainer to filter the gel and remove leaf debris.)

If you want, add a few drops of essential oil to the mix for a nice scent.

Transfer your sanitizer to a clean, empty container. You can refill empty hand sanitizer bottles, or use any small container that’s easy to carry with you. Karunarathne said that if you see cloudy sedimentation, shake the container before use.
