Why Afghan Interpreters for U.S. Were Not Easily Evacuated

If, like me, you've been wondering why Afghan people who worked as interpreters with the U.S. military were slow to get out of the country and struggled to get VISAs approved, it has been traced back to a procedure put in place by Stephen Miller. Who is he? He's the right-wing aide to the Trump White House and he's also a white supremacist. Miller began making life difficult for Afghans who worked with the United States as a Senate staffer, even prior to Trump’s election. Here's the story. <p>

(Photo: Afghan interpreter for the U.S. Credit: CBS News)

WHO IS STEPHEN MILLER? - Wikipedia says "Stephen Miller is an American political advisor who served as a senior advisor for policy and White House director of speechwriting to President Donald Trump. His politics have been described as far-right and anti-immigration. "

<p>
Stephen Miller, Former Trump WH Aide Restricted Afghan Visas

WASHINGTON — As the United States potentially abandons tens of thousands of Afghans who helped two decades of military and diplomatic efforts there to the mercies of the Taliban, a single person may deserve more credit than any other: top Trump White House aide and immigration foe Stephen Miller.

<p>Miller, who worked for all four years as former President Donald Trump’s immigration adviser pushing restrictive policies across the board, was instrumental in slowing down the processing of Special Immigrant Visas (SIV) for Afghan interpreters, embassy staff and others who are now top targets for Taliban assassination, according to both refugee advocates and those who have worked with him.<p>

“The seeds of the insanity that we’re seeing right now were planted in Stephen Miller‘s brain,” said Matt Zeller, a former Army officer who served in Afghanistan and co-founded the group No One Left Behind, adding that Miller is as much to blame for the deaths of interpreters and others as the Taliban themselves. “He’s complicit in their murders ... He’s brilliant at how evil he is.”<p>

Olivia Troye, who worked in the White House for former Vice President Mike Pence, said Miller had a knack for using the bureaucracy to effect his agenda.<p>

“He does it in a very crafty way. You can trace the steps of everything he did along the way,” she said, describing how Miller was even able to use the COVID-19 pandemic to slow down the of processing of SIV applications. “This was just another opportunity to push his anti-immigration agenda.”<p>

Miller, who now helps run the pro-Trump group America First Legal, did not respond to HuffPost queries.<p>

(Photo: Stephen Miller . credit SPLcenter)

In recent days, though, he has pushed the ideas both that Afghans brought here might well be terrorists and that it is too expensive to resettle them, as well as the broader theme that they would “change America.”A day later, he warned on Twitter that permitting these Afghans into the country now would result in even more Afghans coming later: “Keep in mind refugees are on fast-track to citizenship, so the initial resettlement will spark a huge wave of follow-on chain migration.”<p>

And on Monday, he claimed that most of the Afghans arriving do not deserve the opportunity. “The vast majority of those being evacuated had no role in the U.S. war effort,” he wrote. “As I warned from the outset, Biden is using his disastrous Afghanistan exit — and a gullible media — as the pretext for large-scale resettlement of unvetted Afghan refugees throughout the U.S.”<p>

Miller, now 36, has had a reputation as a strident anti-immigration nativist for more than a decade. Known for sending angry all-caps emails to journalists warning of the perils posed by immigrants as a staffer to then-Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, Miller’s views began dramatically affecting U.S. government policy in 2015, after Republicans retook control of the Senate and his boss became chairman of the Judiciary Committee.<p>

In the news: President Biden signs PAWS Act, allowing VA to pay for service dogs for veterans

Wow, this is fantastic news!  For the first time in American history, the VA can pay for service dogs for veterans with PTSD, thanks to a new act signed into law by President Biden (also a dog parent). This is fantastic news for service members and their dogs! Here's the story>

President Biden signs PAWS Act, allowing VA to pay for service dogs for veterans

NEWSNOW13: First Coast News StaffPublished: 12:19 PM EDT August 25, 2021

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — President Biden signed the PAWS Act into law Wednesday, August 25, 2021.

The PAWS ACT, or 'Puppies Assisting Wounded Service members for Veterans Therapy Act,' authorizes the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to create a pilot program on dog training therapy that will provide dog-training skills and service dogs to veterans with mental illnesses.

"This has been a five-year battle to try and convince the federal government that what we do every day is valuable and helps veterans," Rory Diamond, CEO of K9s for Warriors said to First Coast News. "They're finally agreeing and we're getting a big breakthrough here."

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the bill earlier this month after it was passed by the House in March.

Once signed, Diamond said the $10 million, five-year pilot program will take effect on Jan. 1, 2022. For the first time in American history, he says the VA will pay for service dogs for veterans with PTSD.

“We commend the White House for supporting this bill as a critical step in combatting veteran suicide, and we’re confident in the path ahead for Service Dogs ultimately becoming a covered VA benefit to veterans with PTSD,” Diamond said in a news release. “In communicating with veterans and their healthcare providers, it’s more imperative than ever to embrace the lifesaving impact of a Service Dog and to raise awareness for this treatment option as a proven method for mitigating debilitating symptoms of PTSD and suicidal ideations.”

The news release says the new law will also:

Designate eligible veterans to receive dog training instruction from nongovernmental accredited 501(c)(3) nonprofit Service Dog training organizations (i.e., K9s For Warriors) Allow eligible veterans to learn positive reinforcement training in skills that are unique to their own needs to help address or alleviate their PTSD symptoms Provide veterans participating in the program with the opportunity to adopt a dog that they actively assisted in their training, provided that the veteran and their health provider determine it to be in the best interest of the veteran. "There are over 100,000 veterans, we think who need a service dog because of their post-traumatic stress. Right now, K9s for Warriors can help a couple of hundred a year. What this will do is to take that little tiny hose pipe and turn into a whole avalanche of service dogs, eventually down the road, we'll see that happen," Diamond said earlier this month. "Twenty-two veterans a day taking their lives every day by suicide. This is one of the best ways we can fight it."

The pilot program will involve organizations across America. "We know we are going to be able to save so many more warriors," Diamond said. "Of course, K9s for Warriors being the largest and best known for doing it, we will be leading the way."

How to Get a Replacement COVID Vaccine Card (You'll need it for concerts, some restaurants, travel)

If you lost your vaccine card and you're panicked because you have to go somewhere that requires proof of vaccination (and more and more places require it now), here's a way to get a replacement card if you live in certain states. This article is directed to residents of Maryland residents but also includes several other states.

So you lost your vaccine card. Here’s how to get a new one.

By LIZZY LAWRENCE BALTIMORE SUN |AUG 24, 2021

COVID-19 vaccine verification cards — bemoaned for their inconvenient size and dimensions — are easy to lose. As more Maryland businesses and workplaces require proof of vaccination, those who have misplaced their verification cards might be fretting.

Luckily, you have a number of options if your vaccine card has gone astray. Here’s what you can do to get a replacement card.

Who should I contact to get a new card? You can always call your vaccination site to see if they can print you a new one. This is rather easy if you were vaccinated at your neighborhood pharmacy, but trickier if you were vaccinated at a pop-up or mass vaccination site.

Another option is visiting Maryland MyIR, a free, online service that provides people with their official immunization records. Once you register, the service will find your record in the state immunization registry.

(Image; Oregon's instructions to replace your COVID vaccination card. Credit: Oregon health systems)

MyIR has officially partnered with the Maryland Department of Health, and is also working with the health departments in Arizona, Louisiana, D.C., Mississippi, North Dakota, Washington and West Virginia. They’re developing scannable QR codes in their mobile app, so people can easily whip out their proof of vaccination when entering establishments.

Charles Gischlar, spokesman for the department of health, said you can email mdh.mdimmunet@maryland.gov or submit a Record Request Form in MyIR if any information is incorrect. He also listed the following phone numbers to call: 443-863-0121 or 443-303-8421 or 410-935-9295.

What if I got vaccinated in a different state, or have moved out of Maryland? MyIR pulls records from Maryland’s immunization database, so if you were vaccinated elsewhere, it won’t show up. According to Gischlar, your vaccine provider would need to send your vaccine record to a health care provider or the health department in Maryland, who could then add it to the database.

Gischlar said any Marylander can access their vaccination record through MyIR even if they’ve moved elsewhere. To transfer your vaccine record to your new state database, you need to show your record to your new health care provider.

How should I safeguard my card? If you haven’t taken a photo of your vaccination card with your phone yet, do it now. This is a better alternative to carrying the card around with you, as it can get lost easily.

Experts recommend against laminating your vaccination card, as you’ll need to record future booster shots on the card. For some people, this will be as soon as September.

Keep your card in a safe, memorable place, perhaps wherever you keep the rest of your important documents. You might consider visiting MyIR for an online backup, even if your vaccine card is safe and tucked away.

Alarming Findings: Atlantic Ocean currents weaken - will bring Big Weather Changes for Northern Hemisphere

Global warming doesn't just affect the weather, its also affecting ocean circulation and that means big changes coming for the U.S. and Europe. Nature Magazine says, "Evidence suggests that the circulation system of the North Atlantic Ocean is in a weakened state that is unprecedented in the past 1,600 years, but questions remain as to when exactly the decline commenced.' Here's the research.

Atlantic Ocean currents weaken, signaling big weather changes - study

REUTERS Reporting by Nina Chestney; Editing by Angus MacSwan

LONDON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - The Atlantic Ocean's current system, an engine of the Northern Hemsiphere's climate, could be weakening to such an extent that it could soon bring big changes to the world's weather, a scientific study said on Thursday.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a large system of ocean currents which transports warm water from the tropics northwards into the North Atlantic.

As the atmosphere warms due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, the surface ocean beneath retains more of heat. A potential collapse of the system could have severe consequences for the world's weather systems.

Climate models have shown that the AMOC is at its weakest in more than a 1,000 years. However, it has not been known whether the weakening is due to a change in circulation or it is to do with the loss of stability.

The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, said the difference is crucial.

WHAT DOES WEAKER ATLANTIC CIRCULATION DO? If the AMOC collapsed, it would increase cooling of the Northern Hemisphere, sea level rise in the Atlantic, an overall fall in precipitation over Europe and North America and a shift in monsoons in South America and Afria, Britain's Met Office said.

Idiot of the Week: 7 Unvaccinated Liars Arrested at Hawaii Airport for Fake Vaccine Card

On Sept. 2, Hawaii had already arrested 7 people for lying and falsifying vaccine cards to fly. There are strict rules for flying to Hawaii... and they mean business, as they should. Some have been fined and others went to jail. They all face up to a year in jail and fines of up to $5,000. GOOD. There needs to be harsh penalties for liars and cheats. I have zero sympathy for idiots. Here's the story of one woman from Illinois and a video about an arrested  couple from Florida. Such Idiots!!!

Misspelling of Moderna leads to tourist’s arrest in Hawaii

Eugene Hoshiko / AP, File By JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER , Associated PressFEATURED ON BOSTON.COM September 1, 2021

HONOLULU (AP) — Chloe Mrozak, a 24-year-old Illinois woman submitted a fake COVID-19 vaccination card to visit Hawaii with a glaring spelling error that led to her arrest: Moderna was spelled “Maderna,” according to court documents.

In order to bypass Hawaii’s 10-day traveler quarantine, she uploaded a vaccination card to the state’s Safe Travels program and arrived in Honolulu Aug. 23 on a Southwest Airlines flight, the documents said.

“Airport screeners found suspicious errors … such as Moderna was spelled wrong and that her home was in Illinois but her shot was taken at Delaware,” Wilson Lau, a special agent with the Hawaii attorney general’s investigation division, wrote in an email to a Delaware official who confirmed there was no record vaccination record for the woman under her name and birth date.

The email is included in documents filed in court. She was charged with two misdemeanor counts of violating Hawaii’s emergency rules to control the spread of COVID-19. She had been in custody on $2,000 bail until a judge released her at a hearing Tuesday and scheduled another hearing in three weeks.

State Public Defender James Tabe, whose office represented her at hearings this week, declined to comment on her case, noting it’s not clear if she’ll hire her own attorney or apply to have a public defender represent her.

The voicemail at a number listed for her in court documents was full Tuesday. She didn’t immediately respond to a text message from The Associated Press.

 VIDEO: https://youtu.be/rIj0ZMR2eWA

In addition to the suspicious card, authorities determined that the travel information she provided listed she would be staying at a Waikiki Holiday Inn but didn’t include a reservation number and return flight information, court documents said. An assistant manager at the hotel confirmed to Lau she didn’t have a reservation. Lau said in the court document that he tried to call the number she listed but her voicemail was full. He said he emailed her and didn’t get a response.

Lau said he searched for her on Facebook and found a photo showing a “distinctive tattoo on her left hip area.” The tattoo helped authorities find her at a Southwest Airlines counter when she was trying to leave Honolulu on Aug. 28, the court document said. She showed her ID and vaccination card to Lau, who informed her she was being arrested for falsifying vaccination documents.

Other visitors to Hawaii have been arrested for fake vaccination cards, including a father and son from California, who appeared in court via Zoom Tuesday and waived their rights to a jury trial.

Research: Ginkgo Fossil leaves may reveal climate in last era of dinosaurs

Did you know that Ginkgo trees have survived as a species virtually unchanged for 200 million years? They have and the patterns on their leaves may help scientists decipher ancient climates. Here's the story from the Associated Press and a video:

Fossil leaves may reveal climate in last era of dinosaurs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Richard Barclay opens a metal drawer in archives of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum containing fossils that are nearly 100 million years old. Despite their age, these rocks aren’t fragile. The geologist and botanist handles them with casual ease, placing one in his palm for closer examination.

Embedded in the ancient rock is a triangular leaf with rounded upper lobes. This leaf fell off a tree around the time that T-rex and triceratops roamed prehistoric forests, but the plant is instantly recognizable. “You can tell this is ginkgo, it’s a unique shape,” said Barclay. “It hasn’t changed much in many millions of years.”

What’s also special about ginkgo trees is that their fossils often preserve actual plant material, not simply a leaf’s impression. And that thin sheet of organic matter may be key to understanding the ancient climate system — and the possible future of our warming planet.

“Ginkgo is a pretty unique time capsule,” said Peter Crane, a Yale University paleobotanist. As he wrote in “Ginkgo,” his book on the plant, “It is hard to imagine that these trees, now towering above cars and commuters, grew up with the dinosaurs and have come down to us almost unchanged for 200 million years.” “We want to understand how the planet has responded in the past to large-scale changes in climate — how ecosystems changed, how ocean chemistry and sea levels changed, how forests worked.”

Tiny pores on a leaf’s underside are arranged to take in carbon dioxide and respire water, allowing the plant to transform sunlight into energy. When there’s a lot of carbon in the air, the plant needs fewer pores to absorb the carbon it needs. When carbon levels drop, the leaves produce more pores to compensate.

Today, scientists know the global average level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is about 410 parts per million – and Barclay knows what that makes the leaf look like. Thanks to the Victorian botanical sheets, he knows what ginkgo leaves looked like before humans had significantly transformed the planet’s atmosphere. VIDEO: https://youtu.be/qJxZF77ltnU

Discovery in Mexico! 2,000-year-old flower offerings found under Teotihuacan pyramid

Imagine getting a bouquet of flowers that outlive you by 1,950 years or so. Well, archaeologists in Mexico exploring a pyramid uncovered flowers that were used as offerings, and they were about 2,000 years old (well, they weren't in good shape). But it's a cool insight into the offerings made by the society that thrived then. Here's the story:

2,000-year-old flower offerings found under Teotihuacan pyramid  in Mexico

By Owen Jarus LIVESCIENCE, Aug. 24, 2021

Nearly 2,000 years ago, the ancient people of Teotihuacan wrapped bunches of flowers into beautiful bouquets, laid them beneath a jumble of wood and set the pile ablaze. Now, archaeologists have found the remains of those surprisingly well-preserved flowers in a tunnel snaking beneath a pyramid of the ancient city, located northeast of what is now Mexico City.

The pyramid itself is immense, and would have stood 75 feet (23 meters) tall when it was first built, making it taller than the Sphinx of Giza from ancient Egypt. The Teotihuacan pyramid is part of the "Temple of the Feathered Serpent," which was built in honor of Quetzalcoatl, a serpent god who was worshipped in Mesoamerica.

Archaeologists found the bouquets 59 feet (18 m) below ground in the deepest part of the tunnel, said Sergio Gómez-Chávez, an archaeologist with Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) who is leading the excavation of the tunnel. Numerous pieces of pottery, along with a sculpture depicting Tlaloc, a god associated with rainfall and fertility, were found beside the bouquets, he added.

The bouquets were likely part of rituals, possibly associated with fertility, that Indigenous people performed in the tunnel, Gómez-Chávez told Live Science in a translated email. The team hopes that by determining the identity of the flowers, they can learn more about the rituals.

The team discovered the bouquets just a few weeks ago. The number of flowers in each bouquet varies, Gómez-Chávez said, noting that one bouquet has 40 flowers tied together while another has 60 flowers.

Archaeologists found evidence of a large bonfire with numerous pieces of burnt wood where the bouquets were laid down, Gómez-Chávez said. It seems that people placed the bouquets on the ground first and then covered them with a vast amount of wood. The sheer amount of wood seems to have protected the bouquets from the bonfire's flames.

The tunnel that Gómez-Chávez's team is excavating was found in 2003 and has yielded thousands of artifacts including pottery, sculptures, cocoa beans, obsidian, animal remains and even a miniature landscape with pools of liquid mercury. Archaeologists are still trying to understand why ancient people created the tunnel and how they used it.

Teotihuacan contains several pyramids and flourished between roughly 100 B.C. and A.D. 600. It had an urban core that covered 8 square miles (20 square kilometers) and may have had a population of 100,000 people. Originally published on Live Science.

Another Conservative Radio host who regretted vaccine skepticism dies of COVID

There is no celebration in the death of anyone, no matter how much they try and hurt others or purposely feed them wrong information that leads to their demise. A life is a life. During the weekend of August 22, another an Anti- Vaccination right-wing radio host Phil Valentine died a horrible death of COVID 19.    Earlier in August, another conservative radio host, Florida's Dick Farrel also promoted an anti-vaccine, right-wing agenda and regretted it on his deathbed (Click link to read story).   LESSON: Get the COVID Vaccine Now.  Here's the story:

Another Conservative Radio host who regretted vaccine skepticism dies of COVID

By Associated Press /August 22, 2021

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A conservative talk radio host from Tennessee who had been a vaccine skeptic until he was hospitalized from COVID-19 has died. He was 61.

Nashville radio station SuperTalk 99.7 WTN confirmed Phil Valentine’s death in a tweet Saturday.

Valentine had been a skeptic of coronavirus vaccines. But after he tested positive for COVID-19, and prior to his hospitalization, he told his listeners to consider, “If I get this COVID thing, do I have a chance of dying from it?” If so, he advised them to get vaccinated. He said he chose not to get vaccinated because he thought he probably wouldn’t die.

After Valentine was moved into a critical care unit, Mark Valentine said his brother regretted that “he wasn’t a more vocal advocate of the vaccination.”

“I know if he were able to tell you this, he would tell you, ’Go get vaccinated. Quit worrying about the politics. Quit worrying about all the conspiracy theories,” Mark Valentine told The Tennessean on July 25.

“He regrets not being more adamant about getting the vaccine. Look at the dadgum data,” Mark Valentine said.

Phil Valentine had been a radio personality since he was 20 and became a popular conservative host by railing against a state income tax proposed by Republican then-Gov. Don Sundquist, the Tennessean reported.

The program grew into a nationally syndicated show that aired for 12 years on as many as 100 stations, according to the newspaper. At the end of the run, Valentine signed a three-year deal in 2019 that kept him on 99.7 WTN.

“Phil Valentine was a visionary for the conservative movement, and he made an enormous impact on the lives of many Tennesseans,” U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn tweeted. “My deepest condolences and prayers are with Phil’s wife, Susan, and his family. May they be comforted and surrounded by love during this difficult time.”

In the News: Eighth graders lead effort to pardon 1692 wrongly convicted 'witch'

Teachers are amazing. They inspire students to do so many things, and in this case, a teacher from Scituate, Massachusetts helped inspire her students to look into the people accused of being Witches during the 1692-1693 hysteria in Salem. The students found that one woman was never exonerated. Now they're trying to make that happen. Here's the story from the Associated Press:

Eighth graders lead effort to pardon wrongly convicted 'witch'
  By William J. Kole, Associated Press | Posted - Aug. 19, 2021

BOSTON — More than three centuries after a Massachusetts woman was wrongly convicted of witchcraft and sentenced to death, she's finally on the verge of being exonerated — thanks to a curious eighth-grade civics class.

State Sen. Diana DiZoglio, a Democrat from Methuen, has introduced legislation to clear the name of Elizabeth Johnson Jr., who was condemned in 1693 at the height of the Salem Witch Trials but never executed.

DiZoglio says she was inspired by sleuthing done by a group of 13- and 14-year-olds at North Andover Middle School. Civics teacher Carrie LaPierre's students painstakingly researched Johnson and the steps that would need to be taken to make sure she was formally pardoned.

"It is important that we work to correct history," DiZoglio said Wednesday. "We will never be able to change what happened to these victims, but at the very least, we can set the record straight."

If lawmakers approve the measure, Johnson will be the last accused witch to be cleared, according to Witches of Massachusetts Bay, a group devoted to the history and lore of the 17th-century witch hunts.

Twenty people from Salem and neighboring towns were killed and hundreds of others accused during a frenzy of Puritan injustice that began in 1692, stoked by superstition, fear of disease and strangers, scapegoating and petty jealousies. Nineteen were hanged, and one man was crushed to death by rocks.

In the 328 years that have ensued, dozens of suspects officially were cleared, including Johnson's own mother, the daughter of a minister whose conviction eventually was reversed. But for some reason, Johnson's name wasn't included in various legislative attempts to set the record straight.

Johnson was 22 when she was caught up in the hysteria of the witch trials and sentenced to hang. It never happened: Then-Gov. William Phips threw out her punishment as the magnitude of the gross miscarriages of justice in Salem sank in.

But because she wasn't among those whose convictions were formally set aside, hers still technically stands.

"It showed how superstitious people still were after the witch trials," said Artem Likhanov, 14, a rising high school freshman who participated in the school project. "It's not like after it ended people didn't believe in witches anymore. They still thought she was a witch and they wouldn't exonerate her."

DiZoglio's bill would tweak 1957 legislation, amended in 2001, to include Johnson among others who were pardoned after being wrongly accused and convicted of witchcraft.

"Why Elizabeth was not exonerated is unclear but no action was ever taken on her behalf by the General Assembly or the courts," DiZoglio said. "Possibly because she was neither a wife nor a mother, she was not considered worthy of having her name cleared. And because she never had children, there is no group of descendants acting on her behalf."

In 2017, officials unveiled a semi-circular stone wall memorial inscribed with the names of people hanged at a site in Salem known as Proctor's Ledge. It was funded in part by donations from descendants of those accused of being witches.

LaPierre, the teacher, said some of her students initially were ambivalent about the effort to exonerate Johnson because they launched it before the 2020 presidential election and at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic was raging.

"Some of the conversation was, 'Why are we doing this? She's dead. Isn't there more important stuff going on in the world?'" she said. "But they came around to the idea that it's important that in some small way we could do this one thing."

In the News: Three volcanoes erupt at the same time in Alaska, in rare phenomena

If you weren't keeping track of Alaskan volcanoes last month you may have missed the news that three of them erupted at the same time. That's pretty unusual!  Here's the story from Livescience

(Caption: Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) photographed this striking view of Pavlof Volcano on May 18, 2013. The oblique perspective from the ISS reveals the three dimensional structure of the ash plume, which is often obscured by the top-down view of most remote sensing satellites. Situated in the Aleutian Arc about 625 miles (1,000 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage, Pavlof began erupting on May 13, 2013. The volcano jetted lava into the air and spewed an ash cloud 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) high. When photograph ISS036-E-2105 (top) was taken, the space station was about 475 miles south-southeast of the volcano (49.1° North latitude, 157.4° West longitude). The volcanic plume extended southeastward over the North Pacific Ocean. Credit; NASA)

Three volcanoes erupt at the same time in Alaska, in rare phenomena

Yasemin Saplakoglu, Live Science Aug 17, 2021

Three volcanoes on Alaska's Aleutian islands are erupting simultaneously, but are currently not a threat to local communities, according to recent news reports.

This triple whammy is not common, but it's not unheard of, according to NBC News. "Alaska has a lot of volcanoes, and we typically see maybe one eruption every year, on average," Matthew Loewen, a research geologist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, told NBC News. "To have three erupting at once is less common, but it does happen."

It's been at least seven years since three volcanoes erupted at once in Alaska, Loewen told NBC News. The three volcanoes — Pavlof, Great Sitkin and Semisopochnoi — are all under a code "orange" alert, which means that the volcano has the potential to erupt or eruptions are underway with minor ash emissions, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Two others are under a code "yellow" alert, meaning that they are showing signs of unrest.

Pavlof volcano, which sits about 600 miles (966 kilometers) away from Anchorage, is showing low-level unrest and minor ash emissions, while the Great Sitkin volcano, which is closer to the center of the islands, has a continuous flow of lava from its summit crater, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory and NBC News.

The third volcano, Semisopochnoi, is located on an uninhabited island at the easternmost point of U.S., according to NBC News. That volcano has had several explosions, occasional strong seismic tremors or shaking and low-level ash emissions, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. All three volcanoes have been erupting for more than a week.

The volcanoes are part of the so-called Aleutian Arc, which is a chain of volcanoes that sits on the boundary between two tectonic plates, according to Science Alert. These plates are large pieces of Earth's crust that move and bump into one another, spurring much of the planet's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Archaeologists Find More Vesuvius Victims in Ancient Pompeii

If you've never visited the ancient ruins of the city of Pompeii in Italy, it is an ongoing archaeological site. Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. showering Pompeii and Herculaneum with ash and superheated gas, killing all the inhabitants of both places. Today, the site is continually and painstakingly being excavated. That means that there are still many secrets left to reveal and the most recent was of two men in a home when Vesuvius erupted.

Archaeologists Find More Vesuvius Victims in Ancient Pompeii

 By JARRETT A. LOBELL, Archeaology.org

In the ruins of a luxurious villa overlooking the Bay of Naples at Civita Giuliana, half a mile northwest of Pompeii, archaeologists recently discovered the remains of two men killed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.

The researchers were able to create highly accurate casts of the men’s bodies, including details of the clothing they wore while trying to flee the surge of superheated gas and ash that raced through their home on the eruption’s second morning. One man, who showed signs of having performed repetitive physical labor, was between 18 and 25 years of age and wore a short wool tunic. The other was between 30 and 40 and wore both a wool tunic and a mantle, perhaps indicating that he was of higher status.

Another Tragic Lesson Learned: Anti-mask rally organizer Caleb Wallace dies of COVID

When are people going to learn how to protect themselves and stop ignoring science? There is no celebration in the death of anyone, no matter how much they try and hurt others or purposely feed them wrong information that leads to their demise. A life is a life. During the weekend of August 30, another an Anti-science, anti-mask, anti-vaccine "spokesman" who arranged rallies of those natures, died a horrible death of COVID19. He left behind a pregnant wife with small children. WHY? Because he choose to listen to Fox News and Conservative politicans who told him science wasn't valid. DON'T BE LIKE HIM. Here's his story:

In the News: When your Ice Cream Screams Too Loudly

Here's a story from England that I can only call 'When your ice cream screams too loudly." It's about an ice cream truck whose music was way too loud and went on too long for one neighborhood that called for cease and desist. It gives a new angle on the saying "we all scream for ice cream." (I couldn't resist). Here's the story from the BBC News:

Ice cream van firm banned from Lowestoft street over noise complaint

BBC News August 17, 2021

An ice cream van operator has been banned from a street over a complaint that one of its vehicles sounded its chimes for too long.

Lamarti's may not enter Ashfield Crescent, Lowestoft, Suffolk, after a member of the public reported its chimes played for more than 20 seconds. Ice cream vans are only allowed to play chimes for a maximum of 12 seconds.

East Suffolk Council said the business could keep its street trading licence under three conditions.

As well as staying away from Ashfield Crescent, it must keep a written record of when and where a vehicle is trading and must abide by the code of practice on ice cream van chimes.

A meeting of the council's licensing sub-committee heard a resident said the Lamarti's van played the chimes "excessively" during April and June at Ashfield Crescent.

The company, operating since 1980 and based at Bradwell, near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, said its vans played chimes for just seven seconds automatically, and for between 20 to 35 seconds while stationary.

According to the government's Code of Practice on Noise from Ice Cream Van Chimes, they can only be played for up to 12 seconds - and only once when the van is stationary. The committee heard there had also been complaints that the company had operated in areas where it did not have street trading consent.

Owner Mohamed Lamarti's son Omar told the committee that the allegations regarding the chimes were "false". He said: "Our chimes only go on for seven seconds and automatically stop and drivers are trained not to restart the music after they have stopped until they moved on to the next street."

Idiot of the Week: Muscular Body, Empty Head - Arrested as Insurrectionist who Dragged Policeman

This week's idiot may have a nice, muscular body, but he obviously didn't use his brain. This romance novel cover model and bodybuilder was part of the Capitol Insurrection, and he attacked a police officer. Hopefully, this idiot's career is over. Here's the story and photos.

Instagram Posts Help FBI Nab Romance Novel Model Who Beat Capitol Cops

The FBI has arrested Logan Barnhart, whom online sleuths dubbed “CatSweat,” with the help of the Sedition Hunters community.

  Huffington Post August 18, 2021

he FBI has arrested bodybuilder Logan Barnhart, who was photographed dragging a police officer down a set of stairs during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. It was Barnhart’s Instagram account ― where he described himself as a “Pipe Layer\heavy machine operator” and posted right-wing memes alongside shirtless thirst traps ― that sealed the deal.

When former President Donald Trump sent a tweet early this year promoting Jan. 6 as a “Historic day,” a conspiracy-minded former bodybuilder from Michigan let the president know he had his back.

“I’ll be there,” Logan Barnhart replied to @realDonaldTrump on Twitter.

Now, seven months after the man online sleuths dubbed #CatSweat was photographed dragging a police officer down a set of stairs during the attack on the U.S. Capitol, he has been arrested by the FBI. An official confirmed the arrest to HuffPost Tuesday morning.

Barnhart was charged as part of a superseding indictment returned by a grand jury on Aug. 4 and unsealed on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021.

Barnhart, whom the FBI referred to as Capitol suspect 128-AFO because he was wanted for assaulting federal officers, was a major target for the “Sedition Hunters” community, which had given him the nickname “CatSweat” because he was wearing a sweatshirt branded with the name of Caterpillar, the construction equipment manufacturer. (Barnhart worked as a machine operator for Barnhart & Son Inc., which is owned by his father.)

HuffPost positively identified Barnhart before his arrest based on the work of citizen sleuths months ago, but held off on publishing his name based on his violent history (which included rioting charges when he was a teenager) and because the FBI was working on the case.

A tipping point in the investigation came when the Sedition Hunters uncovered video of Barnhart that showed him without sunglasses during the Trump rally at the White House Ellipse prior to the attack.

That image of Barnhart’s face, plugged into a publicly available facial recognition website, pulled up several other images of Barnhart that are plastered across the internet on bodybuilding websites and photography portfolios.

Photos of a shirtless Barnhart even graced the cover of romance novels with names like “Stepbrother UnSEALed: A Bad Boy Military Romance” and “Lighter,” which included the slogan “wrong never felt so right.”

Yet it was Barnhart’s Instagram account ― where he described himself as a “Pipe Layer\heavy machine operator” and posted right-wing memes alongside shirtless thirst traps ― that sealed the deal. In July 2019, Barnhart posted an image of himself wearing the same American flag hat he’d later wear to the Capitol. And in August 2020, he posted a video of himself at work in a Caterpillar-branded sweatshirt.

Barnhart was a “white whale” for members of the Sedition Hunters community, which sprung to life after Jan. 6. An image from that day shows a man in a hooded “CAT” sweatshirt grabbing onto a D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officer whom he and others are dragging down a set of stairs outside a tunnel on the western side of the U.S. Capitol.

Barnhart made a court appearance on Tuesday afternoon in Michigan. He was assigned a court-appointed attorney. He was released on house arrest and an unsecured $5,000 bond.

Heroes of the Week: Courage to Tell it Like it Is: Do Right or Face Consequences

Sometimes, you have to find a lot of courage to tell people like it is, and that what they're doing is wrong, and will harm not only themselves, but many others. I'm talking about people who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID. The Vaccine is Free. The Hospital bill (if you live) can be in the 10s or 100s of thousands of dollars. Unvaccinated are not only being selfish (unless you can't medically get it); but you're inconsiderate of doctors and nurses. Your rush to an ER, may prevent Vaccinated Heart attack patients or Accident victims from getting life saving care, because YOU are a selfish person. This week, Radio Personality Howard Stern, and TV night time personality Jimmy Kimmel told it like it is. I agree that unvaccinated people (without medical reasons) who contract COVID should be lowest priority in hospitals. There has to be consequences for stupid behavior.  This blog features their quotes:

1)  JIMMY KIMMEL'S TAKE ON THE UNVACCINATED

“That choice about who gets hospital care doesn’t seem so tough to me,” Kimmel said. “Vaccinated person having a heart attack? Yes, come right in, we’ll take care of you. Unvaccinated guy who gobbled horse goo? Rest in peace, wheezy.”

2) RADIO ICON HOWARD STERN HAD SOME BLUNT WORDS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE REFUSING TO GET VACCINATED TO STOP THE SPREAD OF THE CORONAVIRUS.

“When are we gonna stop putting up with the idiots in this country and just say it’s mandatory to get vaccinated? F&&& ’em. F&&& their freedom. I want my freedom to live,” Stern said on his SiriusXM show. The “King of all Media” also complained that unvaccinated “imbeciles” were “clogging” hospitals and causing problems for others who need care:   “So like, if you have a heart attack or any kind of problem, you can’t even get into the E.R. And I’m really of mind to say, ‘Look, if you didn’t get vaccinated [and] you got COVID, you don’t get into a hospital.’”
