Spain Trip #38: Granada: Olive Oil Tour Part 3: Taste Testing

Dan and Rob toast some olive oil!
The final part of our Olive Oil Tour in the town of Niguelas, Spain (at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range) consisted of a taste test.
The different olive oils, breads and sugar

WHAT WE TASTED - Each person in our group received a small glass cup that contained a selection of Andalusian extra virgin olive oils and flavored extra virgin olive oils. Tom decided not to taste them, but I tasted all of them... and I loved the sweet one (of course).

5 DIFFERENT OLIVE OILS TO TEST - We learned that some of the extra virgin olive oils were extracted from a single variety of olive, while others were a blend of varieties. They are all very different from each other. There were 5 different olive oils that we tried on bread. A large basket of bread was placed in the middle of the table so we could use it to dip into the oils. I remember that two of them tasted "Peppery," and one of them had basil in it. Another oil was mixed with the taste of oranges and after tasting that one, we were encouraged to dip bread in it and then sprinkle a little sugar on it- When I did that, it tasted like a sweet cookie! Yum!

PALATE CLEANSING - Between each oil, we were encouraged to eat an apple slice to clean the palate (much like smelling a coffee bean between smelling different perfumes, so you can better smell the perfume).

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OLIVE OIL? According to the tour, olive oil is full of vitamins and antioxidants, it has been proved to increase good cholesterol and decrease the bad one, preventing cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis among other illnesses. It is also extremely good for your skin and hair, either directly or through cosmetics.
