This classic series about The mysterious superhero of the 1930s was written in the 1930s by Maxwell Grant (also known as Walter Gibson). Reading these really gives you a feel for the way society and technology was in the 1930s.
In this story: The Shadow is in San Francisco, on the trail of the mystery of the Chinese cult leader "Green Eyes." A government agent is investigating, and The Shadow is shadowing him, rescuing him several times. The gov't agent poses as a Chinese cultist and the Shadow is always around but never obvious. The story is told from the government agent's perspective so the reader never knows what the Shadow is thinking... but, "The Shadow knows!" (Couldn't help myself with that). Although it's out of print, used copies are available on Amazon. Read it!
