Tom asked if we could watch the film Nomadland because of all the awards and nominations it received. We knew what the premise was and thought we'd give it a shot, so we paid to watch it on Netflix. Know that it's about this: A woman in her sixties, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. Today's blog will give you our thoughts.
WHAT WE THOUGHT: We turned it off After 1 hour and 10 minutes. It was boring, maddening, and not only did we really never get to know the characters, we never got inside their minds, and as such, we didn't care about them. Yes, we understood the premise and the plight of them, but we didn't care about the characters (whether they were actors or the real-life nomads). When you don't know someone in a film after more than 1 hour, you lose the viewer. Just like speeches and teaching school - if you don't grab the listener in the first 20 minutes, you never get them. **I do the same thing with a book. After 100 pages, if it doesn't interest me, I stop reading it.BOTTOM LINE: We have turned off or walked out of 3 movies that I can remember, including this one. The other 2 are "Avengers 4" (the first 2 1/2hrs were depressing misery; and a Harry Potter movie - the 3rd one I think) 1 Star of out of 5 for the scenery. SKIP IT.
ABOUT THE MOVIE: Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.
