Happy Halloween! This past weekend we went to an Annapolis Pride Halloween party and met up with
some of our costumed friends. We met our friends Kelly and Benna and got pictures taken with several people in costume. You'll see what
we all dressed up as in today's blog.
VICTORIAN GENTLEMAN - Tom decided to go as a Victorian Gentleman. According to Victorian-Era.org, that means "During the Victorian era, when someone was called Victorian gentlemen,
it meant that they did not need to work in order to earn money or
perform any manual labour in order to live and survive. ... A Victorian gentleman was also classified by a person who never inflicts pain to anyone."
Kelly and Benna
SUPERMAN
- Whenever I (Rob) get the opportunity to dress up, it's always as a
superhero, so I pulled out my Superman costume for this event. This
time, I used some of that temporary hair coloring, and dyed my hair
black like Superman's.
LUMBERJACK
AND MOBSTER? - Kelly came dressed as a lumberjack, complete with an
axe, while her friend came dressed in shirt, tie and pants with a fedora
hat and suspenders. Because it was hard to hear over the crowd, I
didn't know what she was, but guessed a "mobster."
Rob and Tom
NIGHTWING AND MR. ROGERS - Two other friends came dressed up as the Superhero Nightwing (which you learned about in a blog
Rob and Kelly
earlier this week about Comic-con) and Mr. Rogers whocarried a puppet of King Friday. THE BATMAN CREW - There were a group of people dressed as Batman, Robin, and Batwoman,
so Ron and I had to have a superhero pic with them, since we were also
superheroes!
I thought today's post would be appropriate for Halloween week- I love reading mysteries and I love stories with ghosts (or spirits who crossed over) in them and the latest book by Cleo Coyle brings back that combination in the latest Haunted Bookshop Mystery called "The Ghost and the Bogus Bestseller." Although I think it's been about or more years since the last book in the series, this book picks up where the others left off. It's about a woman named Penelope who runs a book shop in Quindicott, Rhode Island, and that book shop is the home to a ghost named Jack. Jack was a private eye in the 1940s who was gunned down in the building, which was his office. Pen can hear and see Jack, and together they solve mysteries. This was another great mystery that was very enjoyable to read, and kept you guessing. I love all of supporting characters, too. 5 of 5 stars! ABOUT THE BOOK - A big bestseller leads to small town trouble. Bookshop owner
Penelope Thornton-McClure didn't believe in ghosts, until she was
haunted by the hard-boiled spirit of 1940s private investigator Jack
Shepard. Now Jack is back on the job, and Pen is eternally grateful...
After
an elegant new customer has a breakdown in her shop, Penelope suspects
there is something bogus behind the biggest bestseller of the year. This
popular potboiler is so hot that folks in her tiny Rhode Island town
are dying to read it--literally. First one customer turns up dead,
followed by another mysterious fatality connected to the book, which Pen
discovers is more than just fiction. Now, with the help of her gumshoe
ghost, Pen must solve the real-life cold case behind the bogus
bestseller before the killer closes the book on her
Author Joshua Rivoli and his new book "Gods and the Dust"
Yesterday I shared my experiences and photos of great character costumes at this year's Baltimore
Comic-Con . In today's blog I want to tell you about an author named Joshua Rivoli, whom I talked with and found the concept of his book fascinating (of course I bought one).
High Fantasy Epic - The author described the book to me as putting all of the Greek myths together as one cohesive storyline. The myths were all written separately, and never had a common thread connecting them, until now! As a fan of Greek Gods and Goddesses, I had to buy this!
MEET JOSHUA RIVOLI-Joshua Rivoli lives in Baltimore County,
Maryland after moving from upstate New York in 2006. He has
self-published one novel so far - Gods and the Dust: Greek Mythology as a
High Fantasy Epic - and has written several other novels yet to be
published. In addition to writing, he has a BFA from the State
University of New York at Fredonia in illustration with a minor in
philosophy.
Joshua and Rob
ABOUT THE BOOK: Greek mythology is stranger than you might think. This dramatic fantasy
novel collects many stories from the ancient sources and strings them
together as one fluid plot, fleshing out the sparse details for a modern
audience. At the dawn of time, the Earth and Sky mated to populate the
world. Their most powerful children are the gods and goddesses – living
personifications of all things great and small, physical and conceptual.
These powerful deities have human emotions that drive them through an
interconnected string of relationships and misadventures, dispensing
wrath and favor in equal measure, resulting in murders, love affairs,
offspring, and wars.
Every year I attend the Baltimore Comic-con and dress up as a superhero. This year, I returned the the comic-con as the Green Lantern and met up with my friend Ron, who was also clad as the superhero Nightwing! In today's blog you'll learn about the challenge getting to the comic-con and the traffic chaos (because of dumb scheduling on the City's part), and I'll share some pictures of my friend Ron and I, read about 3 heroes and 1 villain in comics, and see pics of various costumes.. READ ON! THE TRAFFIC INSANITY - One of the biggest conventions of the year is the Comic book convention at the Baltimore Convention Center. So when the city decided to schedule a MARATHON that basically starts and ends around the Convention center... That's INSANITY. Many of the city blocks were barricaded off to accommodate the runners. What that meant was coming off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, or Interstate 395 that goes into the city, redirected you in circles- and I would up getting stuck in the Federal Hill neighborhood for 45 minutes. SO, I would up driving back south of the city toward BWI airport, where I caught the Light Rail back into the city and convention center. It took about 2 hours to get to the Comic con instead of 45 minutes. Arrrgh! - and try riding public transportation dressed like a superhero. THE COMIC-CON - As always, the convention center was packed with thousands of people and I didn't get to see the costume contest (but Ron was there and said it was over 3 hours long!). The vendors sold new and classic comics, tee shirts, art, and everything you could imagine. It was fun walking through the aisles.
Ron as Nightwing and The Earth-2 FLASH
WHO IS NIGHTWING? If you remember Batman and Robin, you know him. He's Dick Grayson, the former Robin who grew up and assumed the new identity of Nightwing. Nightwing is a superhero in comic books published by DC Comics. WHO IS THE FLASH OF EARTH-2? In DC Comics there are multiple Earths, and they all vibrate at a different dimensional frequency. Earth-1 has what we know as the current heroes of the Justice League. Earth-2 saw heroes develop during the 1940s and band together in the Justice Society. Jay Garrick, the Flash of Earth-2 was one of them. Jay Garrick is a DC Comics character. He is the first superhero known as the Flash. The character was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. He first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (1940). After a bizarre laboratory accident, he acquired the ability to move at superhuman speed, and chose to fight crime as a costumed vigilante, calling himself "the Flash". Jay Garrick has made numerous appearances in other media, including his live-action debut as a cameo in Smallville, played by Billy Mitchell, and recurring in the Arrowverse show The Flash, portrayed by John Wesley Shipp.
WHO IS GREEN LANTERN?
WonderWoman, Doc Ock, Green Lantern
Hal Jordan, also known as Green Lantern, is a DC Comics superhero. The character was created in 1959 by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane, and first appeared in Showcase #22 (October 1959). Hal Jordan is a reinvention of the previous Green Lantern who appeared in 1940s comic books as the character Alan Scott. Hal Jordan is a fighter pilot, a member and occasionally leader of an intergalactic police force called the Green Lantern Corps, as well as a founding member of the Justice League, DC's flagship superhero team, alongside well-known heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. He fights evil across the universe with a ring that grants him a variety of superpowers, but is usually portrayed as one of the protectors of Sector 2814, which is the sector where Earth resides. His powers derive from his power ring and Green Lantern battery, which in the hands of someone capable of overcoming great fear allows the user to channel their will power into creating all manner of fantastic constructs.
Wonder Woman and Batman from Justice League movie
WHO IS DOC OCK (OCTOPUS)? Doctor Octopus (Otto Octavius) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. A highly intelligent mad scientist, Doctor Octopus is typically portrayed as a stocky, myopic man who utilizes four powerful, mechanical appendages, and is a prominent enemy and ally of the superhero Spider-Man, respectively as Doctor Octopus and the Superior Spider-Man. His first brief appearance as the Superior Spider-Man was in Daredevil vol. 3 #21 (December 2012) and his first full appearance of the same character was in Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 (Dec. 2012).

Idiot of the week in a MAGA hat - assaulting people
This week's IDIOT isn't surprising, really. A guy In MAGA Hat Allegedly Unloads Bear Spray Into Crowd Of Anti-Trump
Protesters. There's even a video of the moron committing the assault. These people are SICK in the head. He's a good example of those who support this insanity.
Five people were treated after MAGA Hat wearing man attacked with bear repellent at the Santa Monica Pier.
By Ed Mazza
A man wearing a “Make American Great Again” cap was arrested on Saturday after allegedly spraying bear repellant into a crowd of people protesting against President Donald Trump at the Santa Monica Pier in California.
NBC Los Angeles said five people were treated on-site, but no one was seriously injured at the pier, which is a popular tourist attraction featuring shops, restaurants and an amusement park. Bear repellents commonly include hot-pepper aerosol.
A police officer identified only as Sgt. D. Hicks told the Los Angeles Times the protesters were on the beach at first, but when they walked up onto the pier and encountered a group of Trump supporters, “everything went to crap.”
The footage was captured from several angles. One clip shows the suspect returning and appearing to spray again at someone who was already on the ground from the first dousing.
Bystanders brought the assailant to a police station, which was just steps away from the scene. KTLA identified him as 32-year-old David Nicholas Dempsey, who was booked on suspicion of illegal use of tear gas, assault with a caustic chemical and parole violations. The station said he was on parole from a weapons conviction.
Jail records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department show Dempsey was being held without bail. He’s due in court on Tuesday. Police are working to identify a second man ― described as older ― who also may have sprayed into the crowd, The Los Angeles Times reported.
In footage from the scene Dempsey can be heard telling police he was “attacked” by “libtards” and “flag-burning commies.” The crowd cheered as he was cuffed.

It's pretty awesome when our pets can provide a good message to the world, and one cat in the Boston area has become a celebrity because of her appearance- and her special look is being used to share the word of inclusion for everyone. Here's the story from Boston.com from Sept. 30, 2019:
This local cat’s story has made her an Instagram celebrity. Now her owners have started a nonprofit promoting inclusion.
“So many people are excited because they can now buy stickers with Maya’s face on them."
Photo: Maya the cat with the AllWorthy website. Maya's owners started the nonprofit to promote inclusion. –Courtesy of Lauren Beader
Maya the cat may look slightly different than the rest of her species, from her asymmetrical eyes to her short legs and big feet. But her human mom, Lauren Beader, says Maya is just a typical cat, minus sometimes walking into things due to a lack of peripheral vision. While Maya is probably unaware of her fame, it’s her unique looks that have made her an Instagram star — she has over 404,000 followers — and Beader, along with fiance Harrison Makofsky, who live in Salem, have used Maya’s story to drive awareness for people with disabilities.
That mission led to a children’s book last year and, springing off from that success — Beader said the book raked in $11,000, all donated to Odd Cat Sanctuary MA and the Special Olympics Massachusetts — the couple has now started a nonprofit to further that effort.
“It’s been really cool,” Beader said of starting the nonprofit. “We had been talking about maybe starting a nonprofit, and then, yeah, we just decided to make it happen.”
Found by a restaurant dumpster
Before Instagram made her a star, Maya was nearly euthanized in a Virginia shelter. She was found next to a dumpster behind a Chinese restaurant, according to Beader. “She was in a crate so she wasn’t able to go find shelter or warmth, or anything like that,” Beader said. “And by the time she was brought to the shelter she was pretty sick and frail.”
Maya was born with an extra chromosome, Beader explained, which gives her her different appearance. After three months at the Virginia shelter, she was placed on a euthanasia list. That’s when Odd Cat Sanctuary MA scooped her up. “We saw her post on the Odd Cat Sanctuary website and fell in love immediately,” Beader said.
From the animal shelter to Instagram star
When Beader and Makofsky adopted Maya, Instagram fame wasn’t something they initially sought. But Maya had become popular online via her adoption page.
“People all over the country were sharing it,” Beader recalled. “But it was after we had already adopted her.” Someone at Odd Cat Sanctuary asked Beader what her Instagram handle was with the hope of following Maya in her new home. Beader decided to make Maya her own account, and she and Makofsky uploaded a picture of their new family addition.

The couple went for a hike. When they returned, they were surprised to find that Maya already had a couple thousand followers. “It just kind of happened, and it just kept going from there,” Beader said. Though she was hesitant at first, the account has helped the couple meet people, and they actually headed to a cat convention at the end of this past week. “Now it’s just part of our lives, I guess,” Beader said of the Instagram fame.
Starting a nonprofit
Creating the new Maya-inspired nonprofit, AllWorthy, stems from the success of the children’s book, “Meet Maya Cat: A story about acceptance.”
Through an easy to read book about Maya, featuring the cat’s cartoon likeness, drawn by Makofsky, children learn that even though someone may look different, they deserve acceptance and treatment as anyone else. While Maya is the face of the new organization, disability inclusion and acceptance is dear to Beader. She’s coached a Special Olympics team just about every Saturday for the last 15 years, she said.
Along with the book, AllWorthy includes T-shirts for toddlers, kids, and adults, onesies for babies, mugs, stickers, and other products. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds are donated to a nonprofit of the customer’s choice — there are eight different selections when adding an item to an online shopping cart — while the remaining 25 percent stays with AllWorthy to help pay for the website, book donations, and other operating costs. “So many people are excited because they can now buy stickers with Maya’s face on them,” Beader said. As for Maya, who appears blissfully unaware of her differences from other felines, her Instagram account shows her living a typical cat’s life — hanging out with her sister Dragon, who is paralyzed in her back legs, meowing for food, or lounging in a cardboard box. Though just 10 pounds, Maya has a big personality, Beader said. When the couple has people over, Maya is the life of the party.
“She also doesn’t really have a sense of fear,” Beader said. “She doesn’t like to be touched, but she’ll just walk up to anyone. She loves to be looked at.”
This past Sunday we spent the entire afternoon and evening purchasing and installing new vinyl flooring in our den (converted
from the garage several years ago). Originally, we installed carpeting
and had a small tile landing area where the door to the outside is
located.
Dash running over the old carpet one last time
Dash inspecting the 14 boxes of Vinyl flooring
It seems like right from the
installation that carpet was doomed. With 4 dogs, you never know what's
going to happen, and accidents did. Of course, while trying to sometimes
harness up all four at the door, some couldn't wait, while other times,
after drinking excessively (which Franklin has always done, and Dolly
does now) sometimes they tend to spit it up... When we adopted Dash in
2018 as a 10 year old, he wasn't house broken, so he enjoyed
"christening" the carpet from time to time.
Tom cutting and sizing the flooring
It got to a point where all of the carpet cleaning was useless, so
after 1 year of carpet (we replaced it before that), we decided on easy
to clean vinyl flooring that looks like wood.
It took about 5 hours to install, and Tom coordinated it, and cut all
the pieces. My (Rob) job was easier, as I unpackaged the 5 foot vinyl
planks and helped affix some of them. Tom and our friend Will are
installing trim tomorrow to finalize it, but it looks great. And yes, it was already "christened" once. We are SO happy we installed it already!!
In today's blog we'll take you on a short tour of Tombstone's Epitaph newspaper, that's been around since 1880!! The newspaper reported on the famous "Shootout at the O.K. Corral" on Oct. 26, 1881. The building that the newspaper was printed in is also now a museum. We'll also tell you about John Clum, the founder of the newspaper.
ABOUT THE PAPER - The Tombstone Epitaph is a Tombstone, Arizona-based monthly publication that serves as a window in the history and culture of the Old West. Founded in January 1880, The Epitaph is the oldest continually published newspaper in Arizona.
TODAY'S PAPER -The Epitaph has been a leading voice documenting the rich history of the American West. Today, The Tombstone Epitaph National Edition brings you monthly stories of outlaws and lawmen, soldiers and Indians, ranchers and townspeople...of inventions, intrigues, frontier cookery, Western humor, and Western travel. A fabulous gift for the Old West enthusiast and a souvenir of Tombstone that lasts all year. WHAT IS AN INTERTYPE MACHINE? - We saw an Intertype machine in the museum! - The Intertype machine incorporates a keyboard, a magazine that contains continuously reused type matrices, a casting mechanism, and a distribution system for returning used matrices to the magazine.

An aged Wyatt Ear (L) and John Clum (R) in 1900
JOHN CLUM, FOUNDER OF THE EPITATH - There was 1 man who started the newspaper: John Clum. John Clum was an Easterner who had come West in the 1870s, looking for opportunities - like so many others. Experience as a meteorologist, Apache agent, lawyer, and newspaperman prepared him for the biggest challenge yet: Tombstone, Arizona Territory, where he arrived in January 1880. Within five months, on May 1, 1880, Clum had started a newspaper in the silver boom town. "No Tombstone is complete without its epitaph," he proclaimed in the initial issue, giving the publication its distinctive name which lasts to this day. Tombstone was torn politically, socially, and economically. Clum and The Epitaph were Republican, representing business and town interests. The newspaperman was elected mayor in 1881; he also served as postmaster and head of the local vigilance committee. Source: Tombstone Epitath

Today's blog about Tombstone is just about the sights you'll see walking down the main street (Allen Street), including the famous Oriental Saloon, the place where Virgil Earp was ambushed, the site of the former Grand Hotel and some fun that Dan and I had at the O.K. Corral riding some fake "horses." WAGON RIDES- One of the cool things you can do is take a horse-drawn carriage ride down the streets of Tombstone! HORSING AROUND - the O.K. Corral had a could of wooden horses for people to ride for pictures, so of course Dan and I had to partake!
THE ORIENTAL SALOON- Back in the early 1880s Wyatt Earp ran the Oriental saloon. When Tombstone suffered a couple of fires, the Oriental was one of the casualties. It was recently rebuilt in 2018 (I believe) to look as it did when Wyatt Earp had a Faro gambling table there. It's located 500 E Allen St, Tombstone, AZ 85638.
The Oriental Saloon opened on July 22, 1880,
issuing in the advent of one of Tombstone's two fanciest bars. The bar, carpeting, furnishings, periodicals, and live piano and violin
music were impressive and quite an attraction in this tiny frontier
town.
VIRGIL EARP AMBUSHED - In December 1881 City Marshal Virgil Earp was ambushed and shot just outside of the Oriental Saloon by the criminal cowboys. He lost the use of one of his arms as a result of the shooting.

Virgil Ambushed
The Crystal Palace Saloon
ABOUT THE CRYSTAL PALACE - Located at 20 E Allen St, Tombstone, AZ 85638, the Crystal Palace was originally known as the Golden Eagle Brewing Company, one of early Tombstone's first saloons. It occupied just a small
lot of about 50 by 30 feet while the brewery was in another structure to
the rear. Named after its builder, Benjamin Wehrfritz, the Wehrfritz
Building was expanded by adding a second story to house the offices for
such notables as U.S. Deputy Marshal Virgil Earp, attorney George W.
Berry, and Dr. George E. Goodfellow. It is even known that "Buckskin"
Frank Leslie was a night watchman here for a short time
THE GRAND HOTEL NO MORE - The Grand Hotel opened in Sept 1880. It was a luxury hotel with walnut finishings and Brussels carpets and rare oil paintings. Unfortunately it became a hangout for the notorious Cowboy gang, likely because fellow cowboy (despite being a Sheriff) Johnny Behan bartended there. It burned down in the great fire of 1882. It was rebuilt as 3 other businesses and fire destroyed it again in 1924. NEXT: TOMBSTONE'S NEWSPAPER OFFICE.. STILL GOING SINCE 1880
C.S.Fly's studio (one of the iterations- it burned in 2 fires)
In today's blog, you'll learn about another famous resident of Tombstone, Arizona.
Geronimo
C.S. Fly was a famous photographer of the 1880s. He didn't become famous just because the shootout near the O.K. Corral occurred in the alleyway near his photography studio. He photographed some very famous people. Read on!
WHO WAS C.S. FLY? - Camillus "Buck" Sydney Fly was an Old West photographer who is regarded by some as an early photojournalist and who captured the only known images of Native Americans while still at war with the United States. He took many other pictures of life in the mining boom town of Tombstone, Arizona and the surrounding region.
HIS WIFE ALSO A PHOTOGRAPHER - Mollie Fly actively managed Fly's Gallery when her husband was away.
She was one of the few female photographers of the era, taking pictures
of anyone who could pay the studio price of 35 cents. SAW THE SHOOTOUT- He was an eyewitness on October 26, 1881 to the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which took place outside his photography studio.
Ed Shiefflin, founder of Tombstone
Dan outside C.S. Fly's studio!
HIS FAMOUS SUBJECTS - He took pictures of a number of Tombstone residents including Tombstone founder Ed Schieffelin, pioneer surgeon Dr. George E. Goodfellow, Wyatt Earp's wife Josephine, and others.
PHOTOS OF GERONIMO- On March 20, 1886, C.S. Fly went to the site of Geronimo's surrender and took photos. It was in Cañon de los Embudos, in the Sierra Madre Mountains about 86 miles (138 km) from Fort Bowie. One of the pictures of Geronimo with two of his sons standing alongside
was made at Geronimo's request. Fly's images are the only existing
photographs of Geronimo's surrender.
Silver mining near Tombstone
Most of his negatives were destroyed by two fires that burned his studio to the ground. His widow, photographer Mary E. "Mollie" Fly, donated his remaining images to the Smithsonian Museum before she died in 1912. His photographs are legendary and highly prized.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT C.S. FLY - He served as Cochise County Sheriff from 1895 to 1897.

Re-enactors: L to R: Wyatt, Virgil, tourist, Morgan, Doc Holliday
In today's blog about my Arizona September trip to visit our friend Dan, we explored the rest of the town of Tombstone. In today's blog you'll learn about the famous shootout NEAR the O.K. Corral (it happened in an alley next to the corral), and the Earps and Doc Holliday vs. the "Cowboys." In fact, there are several groups of actors that perform it daily. We saw the version at the O.K. Corral itself, which still stands from the 1880s. In today's blog you'll see pictures from that re-enactment and read about the history behind the event that even made the New York Times in 1881. Read on! >>>
WHAT WAS THE OK CORRAL? The O.K. in O.K. Corral stands for Old Kindersley, apparently the owner's name. It was a livery and horse corral from 1879 to about 1888.
I'M A WYATT EARP ADMIRER-
Most people don't know this about me, but in the early 1990s I became
fascinated with Wyatt Earp. He was a lawman who never used a gun to
disarm criminals and threatening situations. To me, he was a hero before
superheroes. (Sure he ran the Oriental Saloon gambling, but gambling
was a profession). I actually went to cities around the U.S. where he
lived and tracked down his history in each, from Kansas City, KS to Salt
Lake City, UT to Tombstone, AZ.
the handsome actor portraying Wyatt Earp
ABOUT THE SHOOTOUT - The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a 30-second shootout between
lawmen and members of a loosely organized group of outlaws called the
Cowboys that took place at about 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26,
1881. As I
mentioned in a previous blog, the Cowboys were cattle rustlers, thieves
and murderers. The Earps were the law in Tombstone. Virgil was the town
Marshall. He deputized his brothers Wyatt and Morgan and Doc John
Holliday (gambler, dentist, gunfighters) as special policemen. When the cowboys threatened the lives of the Earps over and over again, it finally came down to this event.
WHICH COWBOYS DIED? Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury died from wounds during the shootout.
re-enacting the shootout of Oct 26, 1881
actual location of the shootout, next to Fly's studio
WHICH COWBOYS SURVIVED? -Ike Clanton, Billy
Claiborne, and Wes Fuller were the only Cowboys who came out of the
fight alive – and that was because they ran for their lives. Ike, one of the biggest troublemakers, ran like a coward after making the initial threats. He was later killed while attempting to rob someone (served him right). FAST FACT - Tombstone is also called "The Town too tough to die." That's because in 1887 an earthquake in Mexico ruptured some underground aquifers and flooded the silver mines. The mines from that age remain flooded today.
