A Sick Dog Day
Dolly Sick All Night - Last night Tom picked Dolly and Franklin up at doggy day care, and Dolly had apparently eaten something on the ground and developed serious diarrhea. She immediately needed a bath when she got home (Tom said it was a pungent ride home)- so I gave her and Franklin baths. Despite a good appetite, she had 4 more episodes through the night... which meant Rob getting up to let her out (She's such a good girl and lets us know when she has to go out). She's now on rice and boiled chicken, and will get an Imodium. Fortunately, the day care will separate her with little Franklin (the dachshund) into their own run today.
Speaking of doggy illnesses, the following appeared yesterday in USA TODAY:
Aug. 18, 2009 -- Canine influenza, the potentially deadly H3N8 virus commonly known as dog flu, is spreading.
So far the virus has led to the death of one dog last week, closed down the kennel at Virginia's Fairfax County Animal Shelter, and, according to experts, is now affecting dogs in at least four other states: Colorado, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Symptoms in dogs can include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite and a respiratory infection that may last a few weeks. One to five percent of victims die from related hemorrhagic pneumonia. Although 30 states have reported cases over the past five years, Dubovi said outbreaks are "usually sporadic and then die out."
