Historic Londontown, Md. Part 2: The Tavern and a Secrets of a Trashy Cellar

Tom in front of the Carpenter's shop
In yesterday's blog we introduced you to a Maryland colonial town that disappeared after about 100 years of thriving as a port town. In today's blog we'll take a look at one of the things you'll experience when you visit: A re-creation of part of the Tavern and the secrets of a cellar full of trash.
Table set up from the Tavern

LONDONTOWN'S TAVERN - There's only one original building that stands on the property where the town stood, and it's not the tavern. Several of the buildings have been reconstructed, but the tavern was not yet one of them. However, there is a museum and one display recreated a table and set up.
The original tavern was built in 1720 on Scott Street, which was Londontown's main street (nothing remains of it today) by 1724 it was run by Stephen West Sr.

A TRASHY CELLAR REVEALS A LOT -
He used the cellar for trash, which has become a treasure trove for the archaeologists on the property today. The  trash has yielded 100 broken ceramic and glass vessels. It turns out that the tavern was a place where the town's elite were entertained and did business.  Not really what you'd think of a tavern today.

FUN FACT: There's an archaelogy  department on-site, since it's an on-going project! Things are being unearthed every month!

Londontowne is an unincorporated area and former census-designated place in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States, and the site of a former colonial seaport founded on the South River in 1683.
