Part 2: A Residual Haunt I Encountered at Fort Mc Clary, Maine

WHAT IS FORT MC CLARY? Fort McClary is a former defensive fortification of the United States military located along the southern coast at Kittery Point, Maine at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. It was manned during five significant wars including; the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I and II. Fort McClary was manned during World War II as a civil defense lookout, but no battles took place there. The fort was also used as an observation post during World War I.

WHAT IS A RESIDUAL HAUNT? A residual haunt is not an earthbound ghost that can respond to questions and communicate. It's energy generated from emotions that people were feeling in a structure, that gets impressed upon or soaked into the walls, ceiling, and floor of a structure. It's like a thumbprint of energy on a pane of glass. When the sun shines through the glass, it lights up the thumbprint. Similarly, when living people come into a structure they add their own emotional energy to it, enabling the energy to be felt by sensitive people. Other times, it may generate a ghostly image of the person who created it.

WHERE WAS THE ENERGY? -  After a walk around the grounds of the fort, I thought I would find residual emotional energy in the buildings that housed the riflemen, but there was none. Instead, all the residual emotional energy was in Fort McClary's Blockhouse. The Blockhouse is a uniquely designed military structure that sits atop the highest point in the fort. It's 3 stories high, including a basement. Beginning in 1844, the Blockhouse took 2 years to build and was constructed in three different layers from materials in the surrounding area. Its foundation (basement) is built of mortared fieldstone, the first-story walls are of cut granite, and the second story is built of squared logs. The Blockhouse at Fort McClary was the last one of its kind constructed in Maine.

WHAT WAS THE ENERGY - The residual haunt was the energy left behind by living soldiers from World War II, who were working on the top floor of the Blockhouse. There was anxiety, as there is during any war. 

WHAT FUELED THE ENERGY AND KEPT IT THERE? The fort, which sits atop a hill facing the Piscataqua River, was enshrouded in fog. The water energy from the river plus the water energy in the fog provided the extra energy that helped make the residual emotional energy of anxiety stand out!

 New Book "Ghosts of Ireland: On a Medium's Vacation" Before St. Patrick’s Day   

BOSTON –   Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, best-selling true paranormal author and medium Rob Gutro is publishing his 11th book, “Ghosts of Ireland on a Medium’s Vacation.”  The book debuts on February 24, 2024.  

What happens when a medium goes on vacation? Can a medium simply switch off their ability at will?  Well…not exactly. Like others in his “Medium’s Vacation” series, this book contains Rob’s ghostly encounters, history, his sketches of ghosts and photographs of each place. Readers will experience ghosts in prisons, castles, churches, other historic places and even a shopping mall with a tragic past.  

“Cork City Gaol (jail) was the most haunted place and many prisoners still lingering there as earthbound ghosts,” Gutro said. He sketched out one ghost and captured a photo of a male ghost walking across a corridor that was sealed off by a glass window. “I sensed a ghost down an empty corridor in the jail so I snapped several photos one after the other, and the ghost appeared in one of the photos. That’s the cover of my book.”

The book is organized alphabetically by County, and crosses Ireland from Dublin in the east, to Galway in the west, and south to Cork County. Within each County section are chapters of the haunted places he visited, so readers can use it as a paranormal tour book. “It’s the perfect guidebook for travelers who want to see Ireland, learn history and find out where ghosts still dwell and why,” Gutro said.

"Ireland’s rich history resulted in many ghosts who decided to stay earthbound. I also encountered an abundance of residual emotional energy generated from battles. Everywhere I traveled, I had a paranormal experience, he said.”

The book provides a brief history of haunted places and is intended to be much more than just a collection of personal ghost stories. “Knowing the history of a place is key to understanding why a ghost has decided to stay behind,” Gutro said. Readers will experience haunted places like churches, castles, jails, and unexpected ghosts in an art gallery and shopping mall. “You’ll also understand how the spirits of your loved ones can give you signs anywhere in the world, even on vacation.”

This is the third book in his popular “Ghosts on a Medium’s Vacation” series. The others include Ghosts of England on a Medium’s Vacation and Ghosts of the Bird Cage Theatre on a Medium’s Vacation.

Q&A Margaret Ehrlich, Inspired Ghost Tracking

As a medium on Inspired Ghost Tracking, I had a Q&A with our group's founder, Margaret Ehrlich.

 Q:- What is Inspired Ghost Tracking and how did you get involved in the paranormal?

Since I was a child and lived in a haunted house, I have had questions about whether the paranormal and ghosts were real. As a girl I lived with my family in an old yellow house that made me very curious about what was out there. (You can read about that experience in Chapter 2 of the book “Case Files of Inspired Ghost Tracking” by Rob Gutro.)

.Years later, after my youngest daughter left for college, I found myself alone and wanting to do something about my interests in the paranormal. So, I decided to form a paranormal group. That is how Inspired Ghost Tracking or IGT got started. Since I started the group in 2008 as a beginner in the field, I have learned much throughout the years. In my opinion and experiences, ghosts do exists and sometimes they need our help to cross them over.

 Q: What do you learn from each paranormal investigation?

Each investigation is different and on each one we learned something from the ghosts with whom we communicated.

 Most importantly, IGT members were able to determine why some people who passed chose to stay behind as earthbound ghosts. Upon learning those reasons, we were able to cross them over and bring them the long-awaited peace they longed for, and we brought peace to the living people where the ghosts had dwelled and disrupted their lives. Those families that once dealt with paranormal problems were finally able to live in ghost-free environments and enjoy their homes.

Q: At one time, Inspired Ghost Tracking Led Ghost Tours at a Maryland Mansion and also in Federal Hill. Tell us about Federal Hill.

After a Halloween open house at Scarborough Fair B&B a couple of years ago, I met owner Barry Werner and, along with other guests like medium Rob Gutro, we shared our experiences. A few months later, Barry and I began ghost tours with the help of Rob and Ronda Dixon, IGT historian. 

 It was a walking tour through the ages around Federal Hill delving into the past with tales of murder, mystery and legend. Inspired Ghost Tracking revealed the techniques and science behind ghost hunting through the historic streets of the neighborhood just two blocks from the Inner Harbor, with owners of the local taverns, shops, and restaurants as they discuss the legends and spirits connected with the area. Q: With interest in the paranormal increasingly popular, how often do you conduct public and private investigations?

Our core group does private investigations whenever we are contacted. This could be two or three per month or maybe just one every couple of months. We've also done public site investigations like Patapsco Female Institute, Fort McHenry, Dr. Mudd’s house, or Westminster Burial Ground. Private would be someone calling us about their home or business. 

Q:- If you had to pick one, what is the spookiest place to visit in Baltimore?

I think it would be hard to pick just one as Baltimore has lots of places to visit that are haunted or spooky, including Poe's grave, Westminster Catacombs, Fort McHenry, USS Constellation, Federal Hill, and Fell’s Point. If I had to pick just one I think I would pick Westminster Catacombs as I had a personal experience there hearing the organ playing one night when nobody was in the church.

Q:- What are some of the most bizarre things you’ve seen in your years of investigating?

We went to Patapsco Female Institute and I got a picture of an apparition that others saw on my camera. When getting home the apparition was gone. Some of the voice recordings that we get are very bizarre, as is knowing that they can answer us. But I think the biggest one is a picture Ronda caught of an apparition at Dr. Mudd’s house.

 Q: How can Maryland visitors get involved and explore Baltimore’s haunted heritage?

There are many ways for them to get involved and explore Baltimore’s haunted heritage through some of the ghost tours around, getting involved in a ghost group, or just exploring on their own.

Shot against a wall! Shot in the throat! Some resident ghosts shared their pain of violent deaths. Known for its colorful history in the 1880s as a playhouse, gambling den, saloon, and house of prostitution, the Bird Cage Theatre is one of the most haunted buildings in Tombstone, Arizona where several murders were committed and ghosts linger. It opened after the founding of the town, and has had many famous visitors including: Wyatt Earp and Doc John Holliday among them. Over time, there have been so many ghosts reported there, the museum created a ghost tour.

The book highlights Rob’s encounters and contains photos and the author’s sketches of several of the ghosts he encountered. He encountered ghostly gamblers, prostitutes and cowboys during his visit. Readers will learn how various ghosts revealed their identities and that were confirmed by museum staff. Rob also experienced physical sensations from the dead of their violent deaths.
