Halloween Week: Short Story from my book "Ghosts and Spirits: Explained"

Because it's Halloween week, I thought I would share a short story that appears in my first book "Ghosts and Spirits: Explained" by Rob Gutro.  A woman named Jennifer worked in a hospital in the Mid-Atlantic U.S. and shared her experience.

Ghosts in a Former Hospital

I worked night shift for 7 years in an elder care facility. The building had originally been the county hospital about 100 years ago. Some of the elderly female residents I was assisting would tell me that they had delivered their children in this building when it was a hospital. While working there, many unexplainable things happened to me.

Strangely, I didn't experience any of the hauntings at the facility until after I had returned from a trip where I had my first paranormal experience. Once I had my first experience in this care facility, I had so many unexplainable things happen that I don't know where to start.

I think the first thing happened one sunny morning when I was just getting off work and heading out to the parking lot to get in my car. I was the only person in the parking lot - everyone else in the facility was busy getting residents ready for breakfast. As I approached my car I suddenly heard a woman crying loudly. She was crying as if something horrible had just happened. I immediately started looking for this woman as I thought it might be a fellow nurse needing consoling or possibly a visitor very upset about something. I walked all around a large flowering bush from which the crying seemed to emanate but there was nobody there.

I began walking down the driveway beside the facility that led to morgue behind the building. The loud crying persisted throughout my walk to the back of the building. It was as loud as it was when I was next to my car in front of the building. It seemed to be following me. I could find no living person crying. The crying lady followed me back to my car never answering my questions as to who she was, what I could do to help her or why she was crying. I finally drove home and went to bed.

I experienced the crying lady two more times, both inside the building and on the wing closest to the driveway to the morgue. My assistants also heard her. We checked all of the rooms to no avail. None of the residents were crying, they were all fast asleep.

The cook had a similar experience when he was arriving to work early in the morning. It was still dark outside and he was the only person in the parking lot. He heard the crying lady behind the same bush where I had thought she must be.

He brought his flash light with him and pushed the bush back fully expecting to find a living person there. When he discovered no living person behind the bush he made his way back into the building as fast as he could.

 EDITOR'S NOTE: It sounds like a woman at the facility may have perished outside and is still wandering around lost and panicked, and needs to be crossed over.

Ghosts of the Bird Cage Theatre on a Medium’s Vacation

Shot against a wall! Shot in the throat! Some resident ghosts shared their pain of violent deaths. Others revealed their lives as actors, drinkers, gamblers, prostitutes, and gunfighters to medium and paranormal investigator Rob Gutro when he joined the museum’s ghost tour. He and his friend photographed faces of 2 ghosts in a painting and a mirror. Rob also sketched some ghosts he encountered. The Bird Cage Theatre is a very haunted and historic landmark in Tombstone, Arizona. It was a big part of the wild days of the old west in the United States.  Because of the raw emotional events that occurred there, a number of people have chosen to stay behind as earth-bound ghosts.

Halloween Costumes at the Office! - Superman and Supergirl Fly in!

On October 31, my office had a Halloween party and costumes were encouraged. That's all I (Rob) needed to hear, so I donned my Superman outfit and flew to the office. Here are some pictures of the creative costumes and characters. 
  My friend Lynn and I coordinate our costumes every year. This year we decided upon Superman and Supergirl, and thanks to our friend Samson (who was dressed as Peter Pan), he captured a picture of us about to leap a tall building in a single bound! It instantly became one of my all time favorite Halloween pictures.

 Paul's costume punned the James Webb Space Telescope, with a name sign of James and webbing all over him (I love puns, and thought that was the most clever costume).

   Leslee was Wonder Woman, Ed returned from retirement as a Washington Nationals ultimate fan since they won the World Series this week.

Fun at a Halloween Party! - A Victorian and Superman

Happy Halloween!  This past weekend we went to an Annapolis Pride Halloween party and met up with some of our costumed friends. We met our friends Kelly and Benna and got pictures taken with several people in costume. You'll see what we all dressed up as in today's blog.

VICTORIAN GENTLEMAN - Tom decided to go as a Victorian Gentleman. According to Victorian-Era.org, that means "During the Victorian era, when someone was called Victorian gentlemen, it meant that they did not need to work in order to earn money or perform any manual labour in order to live and survive. ... A Victorian gentleman was also classified by a person who never inflicts pain to anyone."

SUPERMAN - Whenever I (Rob) get the opportunity to dress up, it's always as a superhero, so I pulled out my Superman costume for this event. This time, I used some of that temporary hair coloring, and dyed my hair black like Superman's. 

LUMBERJACK AND MOBSTER? - Kelly came dressed as a lumberjack, complete with an axe, while her friend came dressed in shirt, tie and pants with a fedora hat and suspenders. Because it was hard to hear over the crowd, I didn't know what she was, but guessed a "mobster."

Happy Halloween!  This year Dolly, Franklin and Tyler dressed up as Sharks and little Dash dressed up as a scuba diver!  We attended a dog-Halloween event at Patuxent Gardens in Bowie, MD and brought all four kids in their outfits. You'll read about support from 3 friends, our winners, other dog costumes, and Tyler and Dash Prepare before the event!

Haunted Mansion Hostess and Robin

Yesterday at the office,Rob's office had an annual Halloween party, which included a costume contest and a food contest. This year, I (Rob) baked cupcakes and attended as a different superhero.

Our friend Lynn Jenner and my co-worker loves Halloween as much as I do (Tom doesn't like it), so she arranged the party.


CUPCAKES-- I would like to think I did our friend Jason Hisley (pastry chef extraordinnaire /bakery owner of La Cakerie in Baltimore) proud, because although I used Pilsbury Halloween cake mix, I decorated the cupcakes with all kinds of themed stuff and candy corn. I won third prize for them! :)

ROB'S NEW "ROBIN" COSTUME - One of my favorite superheroes has always been Robin the teen wonder (Batman's sidekick). Robin's costume has changed a lot since he debuted in 1941 and now wears boots, long pants, and a black cape. The yellow cape, short pants and little booties went away because they were impractical).  So, I put the costume together using various components of other costumes I had (Green boots from my Green Lantern costume and a black cape from a Dracula costume). My costume also won first prize, too!  How fun!
