Quincy, Mass. Blog #15: JFK Library Part 4: JFK & Jackie Kennedy Each Win an Emmy

In part 4 of our visit to the JFK Library and Museum, I'll share some things about President John F. Kennedy that you may not have known, like the fact that he won an Emmy Award and so did his wife Jackie for something else. 



QUICK HISTORY ON JFK -  He was subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate and served as the junior senator for Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960.   In 1960, Kennedy ran in the 1960 presidential election and was elected as President of the United States.

WHAT IS AN EMMY AWARD GIVEN FOR? The Emmys are an extensive range of awards for artistic and technical merit for the American and international television industry.

WHY DID JFK WIN AN EMMY AWARD? John F. Kennedy was the first president to effectively use the new medium of television to speak directly to the American people. No other president had conducted live televised press conferences without delay or editing. As a result, JFK won an Emmy Award.  CLICK for More info.

WHAT OTHER AWARDS DID JFK WIN? For his courage and leadership, Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, and the injuries he suffered during the incident also qualified him for a Purple Heart.While in the Senate, Kennedy published his book, Profiles in Courage, which won a Pulitzer Prize.

WHAT DID JACKIE KENNEDY WIN AN EMMY FOR? Jackie Kennedy received the special award for her hour-long tour of the White House, which originally aired on February 14, 1962, on CBS — which then sold the rights to ABC and NBC. Approximately one out of every three Americans watched the first broadcast, and the worldwide audience exceeded 100 million.
