Cleveland Trip #16: An Akron Tour : Best Cookies, and a Tire Connection!

One of the most fun things I did on my visit to Cleveland was to drive to Akron and see my friend Ryan who gave me a walking tour of the small, clean and nice little city of Akron. These are some photo highlights from the walking tour.. and a cookie shop you MUST visit. You'll also learn about what tires have to do with the city.

INSOMNIA COOKIES- While walking around Akron for a night time tour, we stopped at Insomnia Cookies. This place bakes cookies on site and they are AMAZING. This bakery chain is known for late-night deliveries, with some locations selling ice cream. It's located at 367 S Main St, Akron, OH 44308. We each got a cookie that was about 4 inches in diameter- and it was so good I had to finish it! Because there's a university in town, this cookie shop stays open in the early morning hours and makes deliveries to college students staying up late and studying!

(The Cuyahoga River runs through downtown Akron)

(St. Bernard's Church is all lit up at night, and has a large bell tower)

THE CHURCH LANDMARK IN AKRON - St. Bernard's Church is a historic stone masonry church at 44 University Avenue in Akron, Ohio. It is of Romanesque architecture and it's located on the campus of the University of Akron. Founded in 1861 by German immigrants and only in their second building since then, St. Bernard is featured on the posters and postcards of many depictions of downtown Akron everywhere!

AKRON AND TIRES In its heyday, Akron was home to dozens of rubber companies, supplying tires and other products to customers around the globe.   Many articles about rubber industry in the Akron Beacon Journal were eventually compiled into the book “Wheels of Fortune - The Story of Rubber in Akron.
A new statue was erected in downtown Akron to pay homage to the city's rich history of tire manufacturing. The tribute includes historic plaques describing the contributions women and African Americans made to the rubber industry in Akron, which spurred decades-long growth and gave Akron the tagline “rubber capital of the world."
Although I didn't get a photo of that statue, I did get one of a "Dragon" made of tires in one of Akron's parks!

That concludes my short trip to the Cleveland and Akron areas! Hope you've enjoyed learning about some of the cool things I got to experience.
