AARP: Help for us over 50 to find health insurance! (Health Care Law)

AARP has provided a simplified Health Care Product finder for all of us 50 and over... and this should make it easier.  JUST GO TO:  http://tinyurl.com/kr3lugf

AARP Sent me this email:   We understand that the health law can be confusing, but it doesn't have to leave you puzzled. With so much information out there, it can be difficult to weed out the facts from fiction. AARP Maryland wants to help you piece it all together so you can have a clear understanding of how the health law impacts you and your family. Read on to learn more about the Affordable Care Act's impact, or go online to get a detailed report on how the law will affect you and your family.

For those who do not have insurance, the law works to make it easier to buy health insurance.  Individuals and families can now go to  Maryland Health Connection * website or call 1-855-642-8572 to shop, compare and select a health plan.  In addition, this marketplace helps users learn about available financial assistance in paying for health insurance.  It is estimated that three out of four Marylanders who purchase coverage at the marketplace will be eligible for some assistance to reduce the cost of coverage.  Open enrollment at Maryland Health Connection started on October 1, 2013 and will continue through March 31, 2014 with coverage beginning as soon as January 1, 2014, depending upon enrollment date.

For Medicare beneficiaries, the Affordable Care Act works to cover more preventative services.   Wellness visits and other preventative care are now covered at no cost to you.  In addition, if you have Medicare Part D and have reached the "donut hole," you will get a discount of more than 50% on brand name prescription drugs or more than 20% on generic prescription drugs while in the coverage gap.  The "donut hole" will continue to shrink until 2020, when it will completely disappear.  As long as you are enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, you don't need to do anything to get these benefits.

For those who have health insurance, the law works to make staying healthy easier by expanding preventative care services.  It also increases consumer protections by requiring insurance companies to spend more on health care and to eliminate lifetime limits on coverage.  For those who have children, the law allows families to include children in their health insurance plan until age 26 even if they are married or are not in school.

AARP Maryland wants to be sure you have all the information you need to make the right decisions for your family's health care.  We invite you to join us for informational sessions around the state.  To find an event near you, visit the AARP Maryland Blog.
