Great Book about a Dog: Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love

I (Rob) just finished the most wonderful book about a dog that was given a second chance. A puppy that was used as a bait dog in dog fights (by some thug) was rescued after his ear was torn off and jaw was damaged. A veterinarian took him under her wing as her own special cause and saved his life, while looking for a family to adopt him.
The father of the family of four authored the book called "Oogy, the Dog Only a Famliy Could Love." The book is wonderful, and shows how any dog deserves a second chance and immediately becomes part of the family.
  Highly Recommended!!!!

BOOK SUMMARY:Now in paperback, the New York Times-bestselling story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.
In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms.
Heartwarming and redemptive, OOGY is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

Great Sci-Fi Paranormal Mystery: Proven Guilty

I just finished my second novel in the "Dresden Files" series about a paranormal detective in Chicago, and like the first one, it was great!
The STORY:   The White Council of Wizards has drafted wizard Harry Dresden as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in Chicago. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in the Windy City at a horror convention called "Splattercon!!!" but it's all in a day's work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob.
This paranormal detective has to figure out where these blood thirsty entities are killing conference attendees. He also has to figure out how his best friend's daughter fits into the paranormal outbreak... and it leads him into trouble in a Faerie kingdom full of dark entities and evil. This is the 8th book in the series (there are now 15 of them!) and it was such a great read, I finished it in less than 2 weeks. Highly Recommended!

A Fun Pet Rescue Mystery: Hounds Abound

I (Rob) love mystery novels, and I love dogs and when the two come together as they do in a series
called "Pet Rescue Mysteries" by Linda O. Johnston, I can't lose. I happened to see the latest novel "Hounds Abound" in Barnes and Noble and bought it because it sounded like a good combination and had Dachshunds on the cover that resembled our Tyler and Franklin.
The book was a fun read, and it's about a woman named Lauren who manages "HotRescues" a dog and cat rescue. In this book, Lauren tries to find out who murdered the ex-husband of another rescue's manager. It's full of great characters, and a fun read. I recommend it!
BOOK SUMMARY: Saving animals and solving murders seem to go paw-in-paw for shelter manager and amateur sleuth Lauren Vancouver. But this time, mixed up in a murder that may close a much-needed new shelter. Lauren will have to keep herself and her critters safe from an unleashed killer.

Our friend John Sazaklis' Super-Pets Sellout at Annapolis Book Festival

Rob and John at the Book Event
Our friend John Sazaklis is a well-known writer of children's books with Random House in NYC, and has written a lot of superhero books featuring Batman, Superman, the Super-pets and so much more. He's been on the NY Times bestsellers list, too.  So, last Friday, John traveled from NYC to stay with us for the Annapolis Book Festival where he made an appearance with my (Rob) favorite comics shop, Third Eye Comics in Annapolis. He was the featured author for Third Eye, and he had a table with many of his "super pets" books for kids.
BIG HIT- John was a big hit with young and old and works very well with kids. He knows how to get kids excited about the stories, and he did a reading at 3pm, where he had a captive audience (including some adults like me).

John signs a book for a young fan
Swamp Thin and Zombie Pets
CLASSROOM READ - kids like monsters and zombies and John had that covered with his book "Swamp Thing and the Zombie Pets" - Swamp Thing is a DC comics superhero, btw. Take a look at the book here:Swamp Thing vs the Zombie Pets (DC Super-Pets
The story is about SOLOMON GRUNDY's zombie pets taking over the swamp and SWAMP THING's bog buddies must stop them.

Announcement: New Book "Pets and the Afterlife" Now Available

March 27, 2014
RELEASE: 14-01 New Book "Pets and the Afterlife" Now Available
WASHINGTON -- The loss of a pet is like to loss of a child to pet owners. The love we share with our pets never dies, and in a new book called "Pets and the Afterlife" by Rob Gutro, the author provides proof that our pets do communicate with us from the other side.
"I wrote this book to bring comfort to people who lost a pet and explain how our dogs and cats give us messages from the other side," Gutro said. "I'm a dog dad who lost two of my own beloved dogs and both have communicated with me, just as your pets are trying to get messages to you."
Rob Gutro is a dog owner, dog rescue volunteer, medium/paranormal investigator for Inspired Ghost Tracking of Md. and scientist. In Rob's third book, "Pets and the Afterlife," readers will learn how dogs, cats, horses and some birds have the intelligence and ability to send signs to the living after they pass. They will take comfort in knowing our pets are around us from time to time in spirit and recognize the signs they give us.
In addition, readers will learn about the different levels of intelligence that a pet develops and how they are used to communicate signs to the living after the pet passes away. Rob shares scientific studies that prove our pets emotions and personalities. Read the science behind why living pets can sense entities. The author even takes the readers on a paranormal investigation where one of his dogs helps solve a mysterious canine mystery. Learn how our pets in spirit wait for us when it’s our time, what a pet’s ashes can do, the difference between ghosts and spirits and the science behind the energy they use to communicate with us.
"The book also features my dog Buzz who was killed in an accident as a puppy, and became the world's greatest canine communicator in the afterlife," Gutro said. Rob's childhood dogs recently also made an appearance as his mother passed away.
Three of the chapters are written by well-known mediums whose own dogs returned and communicated with them to assure them they were at peace. The book features medium Barb Mallon, Ruthie Larkin the Beantown Medium and Troy Cline. You'll read how Rob's dog Sprite passed and came to all three of these mediums with similar messages and how he revealed his presence to many people in the form of butterfly.
Read an amazing story of how a ghost dog rescued a young girl who grew up to work for dog rescues, and how Rob encountered a tiny ghostly dog in a famous museum in England.
The author has been interviewed and featured in the Washington Post, MSNBC, Paranormal Underground Magazine and has appeared on many paranormal radio programs including "Coast to Coast AM" syndicated radio with George Noory. He has been a guest on radio programs in the U.K. and the U.S. that include such as Unknown Paranormal Radio, Ghost Chronicles Radio, the Haunted Syndicate Pararadio Show and others. He will be appearing at various book festivals in Maryland, and the PARACON in Pensacola, Fla. in August. See his website for other appearances and interviews.
Rob maintains a weekly blog, Facebook and Twitter pages, where he posts about paranormal topics, and where people can share their stories or find other resources on the paranormal. The books, "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead," and "Ghosts and Spirits: Insights from a Medium," are available in paperback and E-book, on Amazon.com and other outlets. Picture Proof of a Ghostly Face: in "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead" by Rob Gutro

Original orb in the furnace room
Here's an inside look at my second book "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead" - that offers picture proof of a female ghost.
It's a rare occasion to get such an amazingly clear picture of a ghost, and I'm not a big believer in orbs, but this photo certainly added a lot of proof that orbs are the most simple form a ghost can take.   These photos were part of an investigation where a family was experiencing a lot of paranormal things. - Without knowing any details I entered the home with medium Troy Cline (we're both on the Inspired Ghost Tracking group) and over a couple of hours determined two women were brutally murdered in the home. We sensed they were murdered and dragged through a furnace room in the home.
enlarged top part of the orb
Later, investigators went back and took photos and captured an orb in the very same furnace room!  Seen here. We enlarged it and found what I believe to be the face of one of the murdered women. They linger to help protect whatever new family is living in the home.
 - We confirmed the double murder after our investigation, with ages, names, etc. Read the entire investigation in my book "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead" by Rob Gutro.

An interesting Book Event!

Yesterday  I was asked to talk about ghosts and spirits, and my book (Ghosts and Spirits: Insights from a Medium) at a senior woman's meeting in Annapolis, Md. There was also another author there who spoke about her series of books and she was fascinating. It was a wonderful time!
Rob Gutro talking to the women's club in Annapolis, Md.
I set up a table in the back of the room and put out my books, business cards, and a sign. After about 15 minutes people started filing in. One woman was approaching my table and I started to get a headache. She told me that she has sensed her late husband around her on numerous occasions. She said that sometimes she would feel him laying next to her in bed. Other times she knew he was just standing nearby.
She said to me "doesn't that sound crazy?" Of course it doesn't!  People who lose loved ones often either see, hear, feel, sense or smell something that reminds them of their late loved one. She asked how I sense ghosts and spirits, and I told her that I get a headache (from electrical/energy overload). She said, "that's amazing, because I get these headaches that come and go, and I attribute them to my late husband." She went on to tell me that she was checked by doctors for a cause of the headaches. I told her that I thought her husband's checking in on her may be some of the reason she gets them. She's obviously sensitive to his spirit returning!
As she turned around to get her seat, I told her "make sure you save a seat for your husband's spirit, too."

Great Book! - Murder She Wrote: A Fatal Feast

Okay, so if you read this blog, you know that the "Murder she Wrote" series of mysteries are my absolute favorite. It's because they're so GREAT.
One of the latest to arrive in paperback was "A Fatal Feast" set with the Thanksgiving Holiday as a centerpiece of the story. It's authors are Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain. :)
- As always, the story keeps you involved and wanting to finish quickly. I read this in about 5 days and had a hard time putting it down to go to sleep at night! Jessica's Scotland Yard Inspector friend George from Scotland Yard is visiting and after Jessica and George help out serving dinners at a homeless shelter, their friend Doc's carving knife is missing. When it turns up in the chest of a mysterious new stranger in town, Jessica and her inspector friend investigate to find a lot of secrets that are being kept in town. EXCELLENT READ!

Good book: The Ghosts of Williamsburg

I recently finished reading the paperback book, The Ghosts of Williamsburg...And Nearby Environs by L. B. Taylor Jr.
My brother and his wife gave me the book last month and it was really enjoyable.

All through the book the author provides pictures of the haunted places with a good amount of information. I recommend this to anyone who is visiting Williamsburg and is interested in ghosts to get this book and read the appropriate chapter before visiting each house.

EXCELLENT BOOK: Pawprints of Katrina

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many animals had to fend for themselves because their owners lost them or were unable to care for them. In Pawprints of Katrina: Pets Saved and Lessons Learned, Cathy Scott documents her experience working with the Best Friends Animal Society triage center to rescue lost animals and reunite them with their owners. Over two hundred stories with accompanying photos describe dramatic and challenging rescue cases with details about the rescues, the examinations, treatment, and follow-up care by the selfless volunteers who worked to save beloved best friends.
This is a very MOVING, and heartwrenching book - about the struggle animals had for survival when people were FORCED to leave them behind as Hurricane Katrina struck. Fortunately, a new law passed now allows people to take their dogs and cats and other pets with them to shelters. A MUST READ- but keep kleenex handy.

Great Book All Ages-"There's a Dead Person Following My Sister Around"

I recently went to a Scholastic book warehouse sale with a good friend who found the paperback "There's a Dead Person Following My Sister Around" by author Vivian Vande Velde.
I just finished the book (142 pages) and although its written for kids and young teens, I LOVED IT!
I learned the Ms. Vande Velde has written others like it, which I intend to read (even though we have no children). The Publisher's Website says of the book "Vande Velde continues her string of historical ghost stories, this time focusing on the Underground Railroad. The first-person narrator, 11-year-old Ted, is certain that his house in Rochester, NY, can't be haunted because it has been in his family for generations and there have been no secrets to speak of in its past. Then his five-year-old sister Vicki's imaginary friend Marella and the "bad lady" who seems to be chasing her prove themselves to be all too real. Ted decides to get to the bottom of the mystery and finds a journal belonging to one of his ancestors that recounts the tragic story of two runaway slaves, a mother and her five-year-old daughter, who drowned in the Erie Canal, which used to run through the family's backyard."
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. It was a fun and enjoyable read.

Great Book - Act of Treason by Vince Flynn

For those who have not yet discovered Vince Flynn, he was one of my dad's favorite authors, and since Dad passed, I've inherited Dad's entire collection of Flynn's books. They are ALL great reads. In Consent to Kill CIA operative Mitch Rapp investigates an al-Qaeda–style bomb attack on the motorcade of the Democratic presidential candidate, Georgia governor Josh Alexander, in Washington, D.C., a month before the November election. The bomb kills the candidate's wife and several Secret Service agents, Rapp uses all the tools at his disposal to investigate the claim of the now discredited head of the protective detail that a mysterious figure in a red baseball cap set off the fatal bomb. Rapp soon finds that the motive for the outrage may be personal rather than political. It's a great read!

Great Book: Consent to Kill - by Vince Flynn

Just finished an OUTSTANDING (thriller) book!!! - "CONSENT TO KILL" by Vince Flynn. I Highly recommend it!
Synopsis: CIA assassin Mitch Rapp battles a Saudi billionaire bent on revenge, an ex–East German Stasi spy and a deadly husband-and-wife team of assassins. There’s a $20-million contract out on Mitch’s head, and to add injury to insult, he hurts his leg during a morning run. After a knee operation and an even more serious mishap, Mitch is out of the hospital and hot on the trail of the evildoers. Besides terrorists and assassins, Mitch has to battle the new national director of intelligence, a craven, hypocritical, inside-the-Beltway operator. Looks like they're making it into a movie!!! Should be great (I just wish my Dad were alive to see it -Vince Flynn was one of his favorite authors): http://www.themovieinsider.com/m6849/consent-to-kill/

Book Event at Federal Hill's Jazz and Blues Fest Today!

Ghosts and vampires are going to make Baltimore's Federal Hill annual Jazz & Blues Fest their favorite "haunt" on Sunday, June 6. Two Maryland authors who wrote about real-life ghosts and a vampire parody of a famous novel will be at the festival talking with humans and signing their books.
Author and developing medium Rob Gutro just published a book called "Ghosts and Spirits: Insights from a Medium," about his abilities, experiences and how entities communicate with the living. Author Stephen Jenner recently published "Twilite: A Parody," a hysterical look at the characters created by Stephanie Meyers' famous novel turned-movie.

Book Review: Pet Ghosts by Joshua Warren

Book Review: Pet Ghosts by Joshua Warren
This book came out in 2006, but I hadn't heard of it until I did a search on the topic recently. I just finished reading it, and I was disappointed because I was expecting insight into animal intelligence, behavior and communications with those they left behind. Having lost a puppy (who communicated with me a LOT), I hoped to read signs from others. Instead, paranormal investigator Joshua Warren focuses on ghostly animals throughout history, such as from ancient and medieval texts (including the Bible) and different cultures. The book talks about Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster, hellhounds and werewolves. None of this made much sense to me because none of these things are "pets." I think the book should have been called "non-human and mythological ghosts."
If you've lost a beloved dog or cat and are looking for comfort from this book, you won't find it here, unfortunately. Warren does great research, but the title of the book is really misleading.

Thanks to all at the 2 Mass. Book Events

This weekend has been full of wonderful experiences and the two book talks/signing events were wonderful. On Friday, May 28, Derek Bartlett (manager of the Cape Cod and the Islands Paranormal Research Society (www.caiprs.com) hosted me at the Cape Cod Community College. I met a lot of wonderful people, some with the gift of mediumship that that are also trying to develop, others with after-death experiences, and others who have seen ghosts or spirits. Derek set me up for a Powerpoint presentation with a microphone, and I had a lot of great interaction with the audience. I'm looking forward to staying in touch with so many folks, and immediately felt a connection with Derek and his wife. My thanks also to my partner Tom (for always coming and supporting me), my mom, brother and friend Janice who came over from Nantucket Island.
On Saturday night, May 29, Jenn from the Coffee Break Cafe in Quincy enabled me to provide an intimate talk and signing with a great group and enjoy great coffee (http://www.coffeebreakcafe.net/). I also connected with Jenn and her mom, and my mom's best friend Jane came with her daughter and husband; and our friend MaryAnn also surprised us! Everyone at both events had great questions and it was a fantastic experience to meet and talk with everyone.
- My next event is THIS SUNDAY, June 6 at the Federal Hill Jazz Festival in Baltimore. I'm teaming up with my friends Steve and Lynn Jenner (who wrote an hysterical parody of "Twilight" called "Twilite: the Parody." Come out and visit! We'll be there from 11am-7pm!
