On Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024 we were traveling north in southern Maine when we suddenly saw a huge plume of black smoke rise up in the sky some miles ahead of us. Since I was in the passenger seat, I was able to capture the event and share it with 3 local television stations.
BLACK SMOKE AHEAD! - Because it was easy to see the thick column of black smoke rising from 2 miles away, drivers on the Maine Turnpike heading north immediately cleared the right lane for emergency vehicles. The Biddeford, Maine Fire Department and Police Department vehicles were able to speed to the flaming car without delay and in the time we were still inching forward, they put out the flames (you can see by the first photo the smoke appeared more light grey).
MAINE DRIVERS VERSUS OUT OF STATE DRIVERS - The firetrucks and police vehicles stopped at the scene and blocked the right lane. Once they were up there, we noticed lots of drivers speed up in the right lane and slam brakes on before the fire trucks, then try to get over into the left lanes. ALL of the cars except 1 car, all had Out of State License Plates. At least MAINERS have common sense and move over (except for the 1 idiot woman from Maine - I saw who it was because she drove past us)
PICTURES AND REPORTING - As we slowly drove by, I took a few pictures and the car was a total loss- nothing left but the front end and the steel frame. I decided to contact the three Portland News television stations and send them the photos and my report- since it would help travelers going north toward Portland, Maine from NH and Massachusetts.
