We love carbs. I (Rob) love pop tarts and bread. Tom loves bagels and crackers. We both love pasta.
Carbs have always been a huge part of our diet. A new study reveals that low-carb diets aren't as good for you as previously thought, but we figured that!
As long as you exercise, you can eat your carbs! Here's the study and some info on Carbs for you:
STUDY: LOW-CARB DIETS COULD SHORTEN LIFE, STUDY SUGGESTS
Low-carb diets, such as Atkins, have become increasingly popular for weight loss and have shown promise for lowering the risk of some illnesses. But a US study over 25 years indicates that moderate carb consumption - or switching meat for plant-based protein and fats - is healthier.
Here's more info on the study, published in The Lancet Public Health. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-45195474?ocid=global_bbccom_email_17082018_top+news+stories
ABOUT CARBS
The main purpose of carbohydrates in the diet is to provide energy. Most carbs get broken down or transformed into glucose, which can be used as energy. Carbs can also be turned into fat (stored energy) for later use.
Fiber is an exception. It does not provide energy directly, but it does feed the friendly bacteria in the digestive system. These bacteria can use the fiber to produce fatty acids that some of our cells can use as energy.
Sugar alcohols are also classified as carbohydrates. They taste sweet, but usually don't provide many calories.
3 CATEGORIES OF CARBS:
Sugars: Sweet, short-chain carbohydrates found in foods. Examples are glucose, fructose, galactose and sucrose.
Starches: Long chains of glucose molecules, which eventually get broken down into glucose in the digestive system.
Fiber: Humans cannot digest fiber, although the bacteria in the digestive system can make some use of them.
