North Jersey Sinkhole Swallows Dump Truck!

In west central New Jersey, in the town of Phillipsburg located along the Delaware river, an apparent water main leak caused a large sinkhole that swallowed most of a dump truck last month. Today's blog is about the original incident, and since I want to know how things resolved, I followed up with the town's website to learn that it took about 3 days to get the dump truck out and repair the water lines, electric and gas lines. Here's the story to accompany the dramatic picture.

WARREN COUNTY, NJ — A dump truck driver was injured Tuesday, Feb 17, 2026 after the roadway beneath the truck collapsed in Warren County, according to police.

On Tuesday, around 1 p.m., police were called to the intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street in Phillipsburg, where roadwork was being done to repair previously reported sinkholes.

[EDITOR NOTE:] Phillipsburg is a town located along the Delaware River that is the most populous municipality in Warren County, in New Jersey. It is part of the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA-NJ metropolitan statistical area.

The dump truck, working to repair the sinkholes, partially collapsed into a new one that had opened up, officials said.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated on site by medical personnel, police said. The incident prompted a hazmat response due to a diesel leak, officials added.

With the sinkhole “appearing larger than originally assessed,” authorities evacuated residents in the immediate area. *************

Overnight crews successfully and safely removed the dump truck that had been engulfed by a sinkhole at the intersection of Lewis Street and Summit Avenue.
