Heroes of the Week: Dedham, Mass. church Nativity scene protesting ICE & Idiots: The Catholic Archibishop

This is a 2 for 1 post: Heroes and Idiots.   This week's heroes are Father Stephen Josoma and members of a church in Dedham, Massachusetts who used a nativity scene to prove a point that the actions of ICE are illegal, immoral and horrendous, stealing parents away from children, and vice versa, based on their race.  The Idiots: The Catholic Church Archbishop AND CJ Doyle, head of the Catholic Action League.

(EDITOR NOTE- By protesting this church's scene, the Catholic Archbishop is also agreeing with ICE. Think about that. Glad I left the Catholic church decades ago).

Dedham church keeps anti-ICE nativity scene despite pushback

Leaders at St. Susanna’s Parish said they will keep the “ICE was here” sign in a half-empty manger outside of the church despite condemnation from some Catholic leaders and community members.

Statues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph are missing from the Dedham church’s annual nativity scene this year. In their place was the sign about ICE, implying that immigration agents had taken the religious icons.

Below it was a smaller sign that read “The Holy Family is safe in our Church ... If you see ICE please call LUCE at 617-370-5023.”

Father Stephen Josoma said he chose to focus the nativity on immigration after speaking with several of the refugee families the church has worked with in the past few years. Several of his congregants, who come from countries like Honduras, Guatemala and Afghanistan, expressed fear about what the stepped-up deportations could mean if they were sent back to the violence they fled.

“These are folks who carry a lot of scars with them. Some of them are physical scars, but most are emotional. They’ve seen their folks killed in front of them,” Josoma said.

He said the display is meant to show “the context Christmas is happening in this year,” adding that current immigration policies feel “brutal” and threaten the status of people who have already settled in the U.S.

The Archdiocese of Boston on Friday called the sign and missing figures a “politically divisive display” and said the parish should restore the créche to its “proper sacred purpose.”

“The people of God have the right to expect that, when they come to church, they will encounter genuine opportunities for prayer and Catholic worship — not divisive political messaging,” the statement read.

The Archdiocese also said St. Susanna did not request or receive permission for the display and said church norms “prohibit the use of sacred objects” for purposes other than worship.

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese, Terrence Donilon, pointed WBUR to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ long-standing statements on immigration, which call for more humane treatment of migrants — especially in detention — while also recognizing a country’s right to regulate its borders. The bishops oppose mass deportation and condemn dehumanizing rhetoric toward both immigrants and law enforcement.

This isn’t the first time St. Susanna’s has clashed with critics over its nativity messaging. For more than a decade, the parish has turned the display into a form of political art, tackling issues like gun control, climate change and other immigration policies.

In 2018, under Josoma’s leadership, the nativity featured a baby Jesus figure in a cage, protesting the Trump administration’s policy that separated immigrant families at the border.

(EDITOR NOTE- Here's the IDIOT):  CJ Doyle, head of the Catholic Action League, said he was furious about this year’s scene after receiving complaints from local residents. He accused the parish and Josoma of creating “sacrilegious” political theater.

“This is a case of a dissident priest who has a long history of these crackpot, publicity stunts,” Doyle said. “He’s politicizing Christmas, he’s exploiting the Holy Family, he’s trivializing it and he’s using his position as a pastor to promote his left-wing political ideology.”

*************************************

Josoma rejected those criticisms, and said this is exactly the kind of moral witness churches should take up.

“I think the role of all churches is to speak out on issues, that’s what the Gospel is about,” he said. “How we treat the least among us is how we ultimately treat Christ.”

He said religious art is meant to provoke reflection, even discomfort, and that critics’ anger toward the display says more about people’s priorities than the installation itself.

“A lot of responses haven’t been anywhere near civil conversation,” he said. “If you ignore the facts, that’s fine, but you can’t have a real dialogue if you don’t accept the reality of what is there.”

Idiots of the Week: The Vatican; Protests Against Italy's Anti-LGBTQ and Disabilities Discrimination Bill

There's nothing like shouting you are a bunch of intolerant bigots, as using a Pulpit to do it, and one that gives you a front row seat to the world of followers. Well, the Vatican and Catholic Church did just that. They're protesting a bill in Italy that would punish discrimination and incitement to violence against the LGBT community, as well as women and people with disabilities.   Here's the story of This Week's Idiots, (courtesy of the BBC News):

Vatican protests against 'unprecedented' Italian bill on homophobia

The Vatican has protested to Italy over a bill on homophobia currently passing through parliament.

The Zan bill would punish discrimination and incitement to violence against the LGBT community, as well as women and people with disabilities.

The Vatican argues the bill would curb religious freedoms secured in a treaty.

Under current Roman Catholic doctrine, gay relationships are referred to as "deviant behaviour".

Advocates of the bill say it has safeguards to ensure religious freedoms.

The Zan bill, named after LGBT activist and politician Alessandro Zan, was passed by the lower house of parliament in November, and now needs to pass the Senate.

It would add legal protections for women and people who are LGBT or disabled. Those found guilty of hate crimes or discrimination against these groups could face up to four years in prison.

What are the Vatican's objections?

The Vatican informally delivered a letter to Italy's ambassador on 17 June, protesting against the proposed law.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told AFP news agency the bill was "an unprecedented act in the history of relations" between Italy and the Vatican. The Vatican believes it would violate the Lateran Treaty, signed by the two in 1929, which recognised Vatican City as an independent state.

According to Il Corriere newspaper, the Church has objected to Catholic schools not being exempted from a proposed national day against homophobia and transphobia, to be held on 17 May.

It has also expressed concern that Catholics could face legal action for expressing their opinions on LGBT issues.

Matteo Salvini, the leader of far-right Northern League, said his party was aligned with the Church's stance.

Alessandro Zan, who is sponsoring the bill, has rebuffed accusations that it would bring censorship.

"The text [of the law] does not restrict in any way freedom of expression or religious freedom. And it respects the autonomy of all schools," he tweeted.

Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has adopted a more liberal stance towards homosexuality.

In a documentary last year, he said same-sex couples should be allowed to have "civil unions".

But Pope Francis has previously reiterated the Church's position that homosexuality is a sin. In 2018, he also said that he was "worried" about homosexuality in the clergy, calling it "a serious matter."

Idiot of the Week: Rhode Island Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin: Homophobe, Bigot

This week's IDIOT is a Catholic Bishop who stated that Catholics should not support gay people. What a hateful, stupid bastard. I grew up Catholic and fled the church because of this hateful intolerance. Even this idiot's response to the offense taken by thousands wasn't an apology.
Is that what the Catholic church is all about today? Promote the current administration's right-wing agenda of hatred and intolerance of people who are not white, straight, christians? This Bishop should be thrown out of the church immediately. I guess he missed the message from his god that says "Love and welcome all people." What an IDIOT.

R.I. bishop issues  homophobic Pride Month tweet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s Roman Catholic bishop on Sunday defended a tweet urging Catholics to not support or attend LGBTQ Pride Month events, saying it was his obligation to teach the faith ‘‘clearly and compassionately, even on very difficult and sensitive issues.’’

Diocese of Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin sparked a backlash beginning Saturday when he tweeted, ‘‘A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ ‘Pride Month’ events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children.’’

***********************************************
MY  NOTE: I think that Bishops and priests' physical and sexual abuse of children have caused FAR MORE HARM to them than a celebration for gay pride ever could.
**********************************************

The posting spurred rebukes by thousands of people who replied on Twitter, including actresses Mia
The BIGOT: Bishop Thomas Tobin
Farrow and Patricia Arquette. Many invoked the scandals of clergy sexual abuse of children in the church.

‘‘This is pure ignorance  ; bigotry,’’ Farrow wrote. ‘‘Ignore this hate-filled hypocrite. His mind set leads only to suffering. He brings to mind those priests who molested my brothers. Of COURSE we should embrace our LGBTQ brothers and sisters and children. Jesus spoke of love.’’
Arquette tweeted, ‘‘Shame on you. LGBT kids are thrown out on the streets and abandoned because of poisonous thinking like yours.’’
The diocese on Sunday released a statement by Tobin. ‘‘I regret that my comments yesterday about Pride Month have turned out to be so controversial in our community, and offensive to some, especially the gay community,’’ Tobin said. ‘‘That certainly was not my intention, but I understand why a good number of individuals have taken offense. I also acknowledge and appreciate the widespread support I have received on this matter.’’

Tobin added that he and the Catholic Church have ‘‘respect and love for members of the gay community.’’
‘‘As a Catholic Bishop, however, my obligation before God is to lead the faithful entrusted to my care and to teach the faith, clearly and compassionately, even on very difficult and sensitive issues,’’ he said.
As of Sunday afternoon, 69,000 people had replied to the tweet, about 15,800 liked it and nearly 4,700 retweeted it. Many of those who replied supported the bishop.

The LGBTQ group Rhode Island Pride held a rally outside the diocese’s headquarters in Providence on Sunday evening.
‘‘Jesus never said a word about homosexuality, about Pride, or the Queer community,’’ the group’s president, Joe Lazzerini, said in a statement. ‘‘Rhode Island Pride respectfully calls on Bishop Tobin to do some self-reflection as the majority of Catholic Rhode Islanders in this state reject the idea that to be Catholic is to be complicit to intolerance, bigotry, and fear.

‘‘Bishop Tobin doesn’t represent the majority of Rhode Island Catholics who support the LGBTQIA+ community in Rhode Island,’’ he wrote.

Tobin is a conservative bishop who has said that he was aware of incidents of sexual abuse reported to church officials while working in Pennsylvania, but that it wasn’t his job to deal with them. He was auxiliary bishop of Pittsburgh from 1992 until 1996. A Pennsylvania grand jury report last year detailed decades of abuse and cover-up in six dioceses, including the Pittsburgh diocese.
In July 2018, Tobin deleted his Twitter account, calling it a major distraction, an obstacle to his spiritual life and an ‘‘occasion of sin’’ for himself and others. But he resumed tweeting in January, according to his current Twitter account.
