This week's Heroes are officers from the Webster, Mass. Police Department who saved a young autistic boy from a nearby river. What's even MORE amazing is that the police officers understood that autistic people have an affinity for water, so they went to the nearby river first and found the boy!
Mass. officers lauded after quick response saves autistic boy, 4, who wandered into river
Webster Police Department Massachusetts, Jan 19, 2024 4:50pm
The Webster Police Department shared the story on Friday via Facebook, noting that the South Worcester County Communication Center received a call from the babysitter on the early afternoon of Jan. 13, 2024.
On January 13, at around 12:44 p.m. the South Worcester County Communication Center received a call from a babysitter that the toddler she was watching had apparently left the residence through an open window. The child was reported as being autistic and only wearing a diaper.
Officers Jon Brooks, Robert Rockwood, and Patrick Trainor rushed to the area. Knowing that people with autism have an affinity for water, they rushed to the French River, which was close to the house where he had left.
Officer Trainor located the child on the bank, partially in the water. He immediately removed the child from the water and alerted the other officers that he had located the child. Officer Brooks requested an ambulance to evaluate him. He was subsequently transported to the Hospital as a precaution.
From the Webster, Mass. Police Chief: I commend the officers and the call takers from SWCCC on doing an outstanding job in getting the information out, coordinating a response, and locating the child. This story could have had a much worse outcome. I am thankful for the hard work the men and women of the Webster Police Department and South Worcester County Communication Center do every day.
