Today's blog is a continuation of the trip to historic downtown Fort Worth, Texas, that I took with my friend Alex in November. The first picture is outside of a breakfast place in Dallas, but the rest of the blog is about the first bank in Fort Worth... so take a walk into history in today's blog.
FORT WORTH'S FIRST BANK - The First Bank of 1872 was "Tidball & Wilson" Established by Thomas A. Tidball and John B. Wilson. It was the first bank founded in Fort Worth, Texas, and we found its location.
HOW WAS THE BANK FOUNDED? According to Geneology Magazine, in 1872, Thomas Tidball left Missouri and took up his residence in Fort Worth, where he lived until his death, on the 26th of October, 1899. In 1873 he formed a partnership with J. B. Wilson, and the two began the business of banking.
WHAT WAS FORT WORTH LIKE IN 1872-73? At that time, Fort Worth had no railroads, was a mere inland country village and this country was very sparsely settled, there being only a few houses between Fort Worth and Dallas. It was, however, being rapidly developed, and he saw the needs of the country as well as its future possibilities. His partner, Mr. Wilson, in a very short time was compelled to return to Virginia by reason of the death of his father, and the management of the banking business devolved solely on Mr. Tidball. His management was very successful.
WHERE IS IT LOCATED? The marker is in Fort Worth, Texas, in Tarrant County. The marker is located on Houston Street, on the left when traveling south. This bronze plaque is affixed to the building that used to house Joe Daiches Jewelers. The jewelry store went out of business and was replaced by a coffee shop. To look at the building you would never know it was where a bank stood. However, I think that the original building was razed and the current building was constructed mid-20th century... but that's a guess.
