Book of the Week: Heroes Across Time

Whenever you buy books, websites will suggest other books for you, and in the case of today's blog, this book, "Heroes Across Time," by Jackie North, was one of them. The book sounded interesting and the cover featured a hot guy, so I gave it a try. Today's blog is my thoughts about the book.

The book is billed as a sequel to "Heroes for Ghosts" which I didn't read, but there was no backstory provided.

What troubled me reading this book is that there was absolutely no explanation of how a man born in 1898 and who fought in World War 1 was whisked away to the present and coupled up with the other main character, a gay man named Devon.

I loved the premise of this. I like how the author told the story from the World War 1 soldier's perspective and compared it to what he was used to in the 1910s. But there were two things missing.

One:  I've read a lot of sequels before, and in them, there's usually an explanation or a reminder of who the characters are, or how they met, or something. There was none of that here. Just that a World War 1 soldier named Stanley was suddenly living with his gay partner, Devon in a seedy apartment and celebrating Christmas together. I kept hoping for a flashback but it never came.

Two: There was no challenge to overcome. It was really just about two guys who love each other living together. The best part of the book was near the end where the modern partner looked up Stanley's former Army battalion friends and found out how they lived their lives out... but it left me with asking what the point of the story was supposed to be. Sure, it was a nice interaction between the characters.

The writing was great, and the characters were intriguing, but it was like reading about an average day in someone's life when I was expecting it to be about something special that happened. 3 of 5 stars for me.
