Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day. It was June 6, 1944. There was a huge anniversary event that occurred earlier today (2pm local time in Normandy, France) and it was emotional to see 100 year old soldiers sitting in the audience. Today's blog will tell you what that day means.
The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, June 6,1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy, France in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history. Although the success of the landings initially suggested a quick end to the war, the campaign to break out of Normandy lasted until mid-August, due to determined German resistance. The war in Europe continued until May 1945, with contributions from various Allied nations, including Australia.
It was amazing to see the soldiers there today (on CBS News live, June 6, 2024) who are all near 100 years old. The praise from Emmanuel Macron, President Joe Biden, and King Charles were touching and showed their appreciation and respect, as it should be.
Side note: Ex-president Trump called the soldiers "Suckers and losers." Never forget that disrespect from him, but more importantly, never forget the sacrifice our soldiers make.
