23-year-old man dies after armed confrontation with deputies outside Rumford Police Department
RUMFORD (WGME) – Police say a 23-year-old Maine man, who was reportedly armed with a rifle, died after being shot by deputies in Rumford on Monday.
Authorities say Rumford police officers and Oxford County deputies were interviewing a person outside the Rumford Police Department on River Street around 8:20 p.m.
The person told officers they had concerns about being followed by a car driven by someone they didn't know.
During the interview, a car matching the description pulled up, and the man driving the vehicle confronted the officers with a rifle.
Shots were then fired by the deputies.
The man, 23-year-old Sean Dyment of Canton, was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The two officers, Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Corporal Joshua Aylward and Deputy Matthew Steinort, were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
