EnjoyedL Essential Marvel Team-Up, Vol.1, Trade Paperback

Recently, I bought and enjoyed the (almost) 500 pager collection of the first 24 issued of Marvel Team Up. It's a now out-of-print trade paperback collection from 2006 called "Essential Marvel Team-Up, Vol.1."

Back in the 1970s and 1980s there was a comic book series called Marvel Team Up.  It featured Spiderman teaming up with another hero for adventures (that sometimes carried into 2 or more issues). Marvel mirrored DC Comics' "Brave and the Bold" comic that featured Batman, and both achieved a lot of success.

You know how sometimes you remember something being really great and then you read it or watch it years later and say, "it was okay." Well, that's how I felt with these. I'm glad I re-read them, but they were just okay.

This collection features Spiderman team-ups with the Human Torch, Ka-Zar, Black Panther, Dr. Strange,  Brother Voodoo, Mr. Fantastic, Ghost Rider and more.

Colorized Video Interview from 1932: with Elihu Thomson, engineer and inventor born on March 29, 1853

I stumbled across this fascinating video interview done in 1932 with a man who became and engineer and inventor -growing up in the mid-1800s in the U.S.  Watch the 5 minute video- now colorized for educational purposes.

Man Born in 1853 Talks About Childhood in the 1860s: Filmed in 1932 - Restored Video

This is Elihu Thomson, engineer and inventor born on March 29, 1853. In this video, he talks about some childhood memories while living in Philadelphia in the 1860s. It was filmed on June 21, 1932. This video has been colorized, speed-adjusted and restored with audio enhancements for clarity. Note: Thomson meant to say "75 years ago" rather than "65 years ago" in the beginning. His family shipped over to America in 1857. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elihu_T... WHO IS HE? Elihu Thomson was born March 29, 1853, in Manchester, England. His father, who worked as a mill mechanic, was thrown out of work in 1857 and decided to emigrate to the United States. In 1858 the family settled in Philadelphia, where Elihu grew up. His father's work as a mechanic stimulated Thomson's interest in mechanical and chemical processes. From his early teens he read widely, built models, and conducted simple chemical experiments. At Philadelphia's Central High School Thomson was an outstanding student who attracted the interest of his instructors. Upon graduating in 1870 he was offered a teaching position at the school.

Between 1870 and 1880 Thomson taught high school in Philadelphia. At the same time he and a fellow teacher named Edwin J. Houston experimented with electricity and succeeded in building a practical electric arc lighting system. In 1879 a group of New England businessmen took an interest in the Thomson-Houston arc lighting system and offered to finance its fabrication.

In 1880 Thomson moved to New Britain, Connecticut, as the company's chief engineer. By 1881 Thomson had designed the best arc lighting system in the country, but sales were slow. In 1882 a group of Lynn, Massachusetts, businessmen purchased the company and changed the name to the Thomson-Houston Electric Company.

Double Idiot of the Week: Gay adult film star arrested for violent role in Jan. 6 riots

This week's idiot is a DOUBLE-Idiot. That means he not only bragged about breaking the law (and on social media), but he's a gay adult film star who supports a political party that would prefer to see him dead, exiled or wiped out. Here's the story of this double-FOOL.

Gay adult film star arrested for violent role in Jan. 6 riots and the receipts don’t lie

Adult film performer Sergeant Miles (legal name Steven Miles) has made no secret of his ardent support of Donald Trump, but now it’s emerged just how far he was willing to go. On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, Miles was arrested for his violent role in the January 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.

Miles, 39, who performs in both gay and straight scenes, is accused of assaulting police officers and smashing a window of the Capitol building as rioters attempted to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

He was arrested and charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers, civil disorder, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a dangerous weapon, and other related offenses, according to the Department of Justice.

CCTV images included in the DOJ complaint show a MAGA hat-wearing Miles and a co-defendant named Matthew Lebrun throwing punches at police officers. Miles can also be seen smashing a window and entering the building:

In a sick plot twist, Str8Up (link work-unfriendly) reports that one week after he participated in the violent insurrection, Miles took to Twitter to blame Black Lives Matter and Antifa for instigating the event.

Since the January 6 insurrection, nearly 800 people across the country have been arrested, according to the DOJ. More than 250 have been charged with assaulting or impending law enforcement.

Heroes of the Week: Springfield police officers save choking 3-month-old baby

This week's heroes are police officers from Springfield, Massachusetts. They saw a distressed woman screaming on a street for help and they found her baby unresponsive in the woman's car. They resuscitated the baby successfully. Here's the story (and the Police Body Cam Video of the event) from the Boston Globe.

Springfield police officers save choking 3-month-old baby

By Heather Alterisio, Boston Globe

A couple of Springfield police officers sprung into action and saved a choking 3-month-old baby while working a detail assignment Monday.

Officers Christopher Charles and Luis Rodriguez were working at the intersection of Bradley and Wilbraham roads at approximately 2 p.m. when a woman pulled her car over, got out, and began screaming that her baby wasn’t breathing, according to a police department release.

Officers quickly ran over to find a pale baby girl, choking and grasping for air, as seen in body camera footage of the incident that police included in the release.

Rodriguez called for ambulance, while Charles removed the baby from her car seat, placed her facedown on his forearm, and began patting her on the back to clear her airway.

“I want you to cry,” Charles says repeatedly, while assuring everyone that she is OK.

Paramedics arrived soon after and transported the baby to an area hospital for further evaluation, police said. She was released later that day.

“I just relied on my training, you know, someone was in distress and we had been trained to react,” said Charles at a press conference held to acknowledge their efforts. “We do a lot of training in the academy, [and] I just came from an in-service [training] as well, and I also have kids.”

The city’s mayor and police commissioner each lauded Charles and Rodriguez, who both graduated from Springfield Police Academy last year, for their efforts.

“First of all, I am very happy that mom and baby are doing well and healthy,” Mayor Domenic Sarno said in a statement. “Such a beautiful child and loving mother whose quick thinking to pull over after seeing the officers working a road detail, I am so relieved that our brave and dedicated officers were able to offer assistance and utilize their training to save the life of this precious child.

“Simply tremendous life-saving work by Officers Christopher Charles and Luis Rodriguez — they were so calm, cool and collected,” he continued. “Sometimes people forget that our police officers are not only brave, compassionate, but also, sentinels of peace making for a better and healthier community.”

“I am so proud of these officers who immediately took action, kept their composure in a stressful situation and worked together to help this baby,” Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood said. “Officers start every shift not knowing what they may face that day or how they may be able to make an impact, and I am thankful that they were in the right place at the right time to use their training to save a life.”

K-9 featured in Netflix’s ‘Rescued by Ruby’ euthanized

Heartbreaking news from Rhode Island where the dog that inspired the recent Netflix movie "Rescued by Ruby" has just passed away earlier this month. Here's the story from the Boston Globe.

K-9 featured in Netflix’s ‘Rescued by Ruby’ euthanized

State Police said Sunday, May 15, 2022,  K-9 Ruby was put down Friday following a “sudden, acute, and untreatable illness.” She was 11 years old.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island dog whose inspiring story of going from shelter dog to lifesaving police K-9 became the subject of a recent Netflix movie has been euthanized.

State Police said Sunday K-9 Ruby was put down Friday following a “sudden, acute, and untreatable illness.” She was 11 years old.

Col. Darnell Weaver, superintendent of the state police, expressed gratitude for K-9 Ruby’s years of service.

“K-9 Ruby dedicated her life to serve the citizens of Rhode Island and make a positive impact on every person she ever interacted with,” he said in a statement. “She became a symbol of hope for all shelter dogs, showing the world what a shelter dog can do when just given love and the chance to shine.”

Ruby served with the Rhode Island State Police for 11 years and was handled by Cpl. Daniel O’Neil, Weaver said.

In this file photo, Rhode Island State Police Cpl. Daniel O’Neil poses with his partner, Ruby, a working state police K-9 and former shelter dog, outside the state police barracks in North Kingstown, R.I., on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022. Ruby was euthanized following a “sudden, acute, and untreatable illness.” (AP Photo/Charles Krupa) Part Australian shepherd and part border collie, Ruby was one of the first shelter dogs trained to serve with the Rhode Island State Police. She participated in numerous search-and-rescue missions and made many public appearances during her career.

Ruby gained notoriety in 2017 when she located a teenage boy who was severely injured while hiking in the woods. The boy turned out to be the son of the animal shelter volunteer who had fought to keep her from being put down.

“She was a total knucklehead,” shelter volunteer and dog trainer Patricia Inman had told The Associated Press of Ruby, who had been returned by five families for being too rambunctious before O’Neil adopted the then-eight-month-old in 2011.

Ruby earned national recognition for the rescue — the American Humane Hero Dog organization named her the nation’s “Search and Rescue Dog of the Year” — and her story was made into the 2022 Netflix movie “Rescued by Ruby.”

“She had a full, happy, and wonderful life, not only as a trooper, but as part of a loving family,” Weaver said. “She worked right until the end and never gave up doing what she loved most — making people smile.”

Ruby lived with O’Neil and his family and will be honored privately, police said.

“She was given a chance and she’s been doing everything she can to pay it back,” O’Neil said earlier this year. “You have this dog that was given up on, and she’s changed so many people’s lives.”

Despite her lauded search-and-rescue career, Ruby’s mischievous spirit was irrepressible: Three years ago, she bolted near a state park, turning up safe and sound after a 19-hour search. More recently, she returned from a bathroom break with a live skunk writhing — and spraying — in her jaws.

The antics were part of what made Ruby, well, Ruby. Above all, she was a good dog.

“If you show them love and compassion and you give them a certain type of stability, they’ll show their true colors,” O’Neil had said.

Fantastic Science Book: Locked in Time: Animal Behavior Unearthed in 50 Extraordinary Fossils

As a meteorologist, I love all things science. In addition to weather, I'm especially fascinated by dinosaurs and fossils. So when I heard about "Locked in Time: Animal Behavior Unearthed in 50 Extraordinary Fossils" by Dean Lomax, I knew I had to read it. This book contains 50 amazing fossil finds, and each finding is accompanied by Amazing illustrations by paleoartist Bob Nicholls of the dinosaur, bird, marine animal or insect that is the topic of the finding.

The author is brilliant in his explanations, and i was amazed that he could discuss details about the lives, structure and habits of mammals, dinosaurs, marine mammals, birds and snakes. Dean Lomax knows how to bring prehistoric creatures into the knowledge of modern mankind.

Even people who are remotely interested in paleontology will find this fascinating. 5 of 5 Stars! Here's the description of the book:

SUMMARY:

Fossils allow us to picture the forms of life that inhabited the earth eons ago. But we long to know more: how did these animals actually behave? We are fascinated by the daily lives of our fellow creatures―how they reproduce and raise their young, how they hunt their prey or elude their predators, and more. What would it be like to see prehistoric animals as they lived and breathed?

From dinosaurs fighting to their deaths to elephant-sized burrowing ground sloths, this book takes readers on a global journey deep into the earth’s past. Locked in Time showcases fifty of the most astonishing fossils ever found, brought together in five fascinating chapters that offer an unprecedented glimpse at the real-life behaviors of prehistoric animals.

(Photo: Dr. Dean Lomax, author)

Dean R. Lomax examines the extraordinary direct evidence of fossils captured in the midst of everyday action, such as dinosaurs sitting on their eggs like birds, Jurassic flies preserved while mating, a T. rex infected by parasites.

Each fossil, he reveals, tells a unique story about prehistoric life. Many recall behaviors typical of animals familiar to us today, evoking the chain of evolution that links all living things to their distant ancestors.

(Image: Illustration by paleoartist Bob Nicholls in the book);

Locked in Time allows us to see that fossils are not just inanimate objects: they can record the life stories of creatures as fully alive as any today. Striking and scientifically rigorous illustrations by renowned paleoartist Bob Nicholls bring these breathtaking moments to life.

Why gas prices keep increasing — and when they may come down

Many people are complaining about higher gas prices. But it's nothing new, and the White House can only do what it has done- release stock from the National Oil Reserve (remember, it took prices down the last several months?). There's a war in Ukraine that affects them but think about it- There was a Oil Rig Fire in the Gulf of Mexico years ago, and Oil Companies raised prices. Same with ANY landfalling Hurricane- Oil Companies Raised Prices. This is Not new. Here's a story from the Boston Globe that explains the reasons for the high prices>>

Here’s why gas prices keep getting higher and higher — and when they may come down

Everything from the war in Ukraine to the politics behind oil prices could be to blame for high pump price tags.

 David L. Ryan/Globe Staff / By Marta Hill May 11, 2022

If you’ve filled up your tank in recent weeks, it’s possible you winced at the total bill. That’s because gas prices are through the roof — both regular unleaded and diesel fuels are at the highest-ever recorded average price in Massachusetts, according to AAA.

PAYING AT THE PUMP: Regular gas on average costs $4.44 per gallon in Massachusetts, a full 20 cents higher than a week ago, according to AAA’s gas price monitor. The national average is a bit lower, coming in at $4.40 per gallon, but experts say the increases may not be done and prices may rise above $4.50 per gallon in the coming weeks.

WHAT IS DRIVING THE HIGH PRICES?

A number of things are likely contributing, ranging from lingering effects of the pandemic, to ripple effects from the war in Ukraine, to the politics behind oil.

COMBINATION OF FACTORS

COVID-19 crushed oil demand, and production just hasn’t bounced back yet, according to Jim Patterson, a reporter at Kiplinger who has been covering gasoline prices for several years.

When the pandemic first kept everyone home and shuttered stores, demand for oil fell dramatically, taking with it the price of crude oil. Now, even as the world is slowly moving out from underneath pandemic restrictions, demand has come roaring back.

“Unsurprisingly, consumers who missed out on travel and other normal activities in 2020 and 2021 are making up for lost time now,” Patterson wrote. “U.S. oil demand is about back to where it was pre-COVID. But oil production takes a lot longer to restart than oil consumption.”

While domestic production and COVID effects contribute, so does the conflict in Ukraine. When the war first started in February, Western sanctions on Russian oil were quick to come. Russia produces roughly 10% of the world’s oil, according to Patterson, behind only the United States and Saudi Arabia.

According to Patterson, this pushed crude oil prices above $100 a barrel, which contributed to the rising gas prices. AAA agreed with Patterson, saying high crude oil prices contributed to the gas price increase.

“With the cost of oil accounting for more than half of the pump price, more expensive oil means more expensive gasoline,” Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs, said in a release. “Locally, prices have now moved past those record high levels of early March.”

Politics also play a role, and President Joe Biden came into office with the goal of transitioning the country away from fossil fuels. “In short, the administration has been less friendly to oil production and transport than its predecessor, at a time when markets are undersupplied,” Patterson wrote. “How much that adds to the price you pay at the pump is impossible to say, but it’s a factor.”

The Biden administration did attempt to lower rising gas prices by committing to releasing 1 million barrels of oil from its stockpiles every day for the next six months, an effort announced at the end of March. Roger Read, a senior energy analyst at Wells Fargo Securities told CNBC that the planned daily release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is about 1% of daily global production and 5% of U.S consumption.

“I don’t want to make it sound like it’s nothing, but you just arrive at the issue where we may be off a lot more than just 1 million barrels. So it helps, but it’s unlikely to solve the problem,” he said. “In the end, it’s a little bit of a Band-Aid and I think a little bit of hoping to get later in the year OPEC catch up.”

CAUSE FOR HOPE? While there are signs that prices might continue to rise, there has also recently been cause for hope: oil prices have fallen about 10% since last weekend. West Texas intermediate, the United States benchmark for oil, costs almost $104, down from more than $120 in March. It was briefly below $100 Tuesday, its lowest level in two weeks.

Similarly, Brent oil, the international benchmark, currently sits at $106.23, down from almost $130 in March. According to the New York Times, it may take a bit for prices at the pump to reflect the changes in crude oil prices.

“Within the next two weeks, we should see the peak of gasoline prices,” Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy and Economic Research, which does consulting and analysis in the oil and gas industry, told the New York Times. “Oil prices should go down because people will realize that Russian supplies will not disappear as the European sanctions are phased in. They’ll simply be shifted to new customers.”

Patterson wrote in a May 9 Kiplinger article that while prices will likely stay high through spring and summer, respite could come in autumn, if seasonal patterns hold true.

“That might not be much comfort to motorists as they pay for expensive fill-ups this spring and summer,” Patterson wrote. “But unless an economic recession comes along soon and crimps demand for fuel in painful fashion, high gas prices probably won’t go down anytime soon.”

Biden Admin. Helps Millions of Trump Supporters : Baby Formula, Family Visits

I recently had an event in central Pennsylvania near Gettysburg, and there were a lot of hateful flags hanging from houses and bumper stickers on cars that had vulgarities against President Biden. Well, those people need to take a look at things he's done to help them and change their Fox-news influenced attitude based on falsehoods.

The Biden Administration last week invoked the "Defense Production Act" to increase Baby Formula supplies. That affects anyone of any political party. Further- there are millions of Cuban-Americans in Florida who did Not vote for Biden, yet, he has opened the doors for them to NOW resume family visits with their relatives in Cuba (Reversing the Trump policy - which blocked them from seeing loved ones. Seriously- they voted Trump and against themselves). So, if you're a Republican, or you didn't vote for President Biden, know that he is helping you. STORY>>>

1) BIDEN ADMINISTRATION INVOKES DEFENSE PRODUCTION ACT IN ATTEMPT TO INCREASE SUPPLIES OF BABY FORMULA • President Joe Biden is requiring suppliers to direct ingredients used in baby formula to key manufacturers to help boost domestic production. • Biden has also ordered the federal health and agriculture departments to use Defense Department aircraft to pick up infant formula from overseas. • Parents have been struggling to buy formula for their infants since the closure of a key manufacturing facility in Michigan due to bacterial contamination. STORY: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/18/biden-invokes-defense-production-act-to-address-infant-formula-shortage.html WHY HE IS USING THE ACT: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/05/19/baby-formula-shortage-defense-production-act/

2) Ironically, Cuban Americans in FLORIDA did NOT vote for Joe Biden yet HE is the President that allows for family reunions (Trump didn’t)

Reversing Trump measures, U.S. will expand flights to Cuba and resume family reunifications

MICHAEL WILNER AND NORA GÁMEZ TORRES MAY 17, 2022 4:24 PM\Miami Herald Newspaper -

The Biden administration is restoring flights to Cuban cities other than Havana and reestablishing a family reunification program suspended for years, following recommendations of a long-anticipated review of U.S. policy toward Cuba, senior administration officials told McClatchy and the Miami Herald on Monday. The administration will also allow group travel for educational or professional exchanges and lift caps on money sent to families on the island.

A woman bought a sculpture at Goodwill -It was missing ancient Roman bust.

If you've ever gone into a Goodwill store you never know what you'll find. I've been in some of them to look for books and even old furniture... but one woman decided to buy a bust of a man who looked somewhat grumpy - and it turned out to be a missing Ancient Roman bust!  Here's the amazing story from MSNBC from May, 2022:

(Image: Laura Young bought a sculpture at a Goodwill store in Austin, Texas, for $35 only to discover it was a missing ancient Roman bust from Germany. Joel Salcido / San Antonio Museum of Art)

A woman bought a sculpture at Goodwill for $34.99. It was actually a missing ancient Roman bust.

May 6, 2022, 9:54 AM EDTBy Chantal Da Silva MSNBC

Laura Young, a Texas antiques dealer, thought she had found a steal when she came across a stunning statue at a Goodwill store in 2018 for just under $35. And while she suspected she had come across something "very special," little did she know the piece would turn out to be a priceless Roman bust dating back to 2,000 years.

When she first came across the bust, scouring for antique treasures in the Goodwill store, one of Young's first thoughts was: "He looked Roman. He looked old." And once she purchased the statue, she told the San Antonio Express-News, "in the sunlight, it looked like something that could be very, very special."

Special, indeed. A Sotheby's consultant eventually determined that the $35 sculpture was in fact a marble Julio-Claudian-era Roman bust.

It had taken years to determine the authenticity of the bust. However, after consulting a range of experts, Young was able to notify the German government of the finding and made arrangements to return it to the Bavarian Administration of State-owned Palaces, the newspaper reported. But first, she said she wanted it to be put on display in her home state and an agreement was eventually made to allow the sculpture to be put on exhibit at the San Antonio Museum of Art.

“He’d been hidden for 70 to 80 years, I thought he deserved to be seen and studied,” Young said. It is believed a U.S. soldier fighting in World War II likely brought the sculpture from Germany to Texas, according to the San Antonio Museum of Art.

How exactly the ancient sculpture dating from as far back as the late first century B.C. or early first century A.D. came to arrive in the Goodwill Store in Austin may never be known.

However, it once stood in the town of Aschaffenburg, Germany, in a full-scale model of a house from Pompeii, called the Pompejanum, built by Ludwig I of Bavaria, according to the San Antonio Museum of Art, where it went up on display on Wednesday.

Idiot of the Week: NH man in Capitol Riot chugged wine, Ran for Local Office

This week's idiot is a guy from Keene, New Hampshire who thought it was a good idea to storm the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He stole wine and a Senate procedure book (which he sold)... and now he's rightly in jail.  He STILL thinks he did nothing wrong. IDIOT.  What makes him even more of an idiot- he's a gay married man. Obviously, he doesn't know his party hates gay people. Back in 2020 he had a failed run for County Commission office as a Republican in Keene, NH (Story following). UGH.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire man who swilled wine and stole a book while storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Monday.

Jason Riddle, of Keene, plead guilty in November to two misdemeanors, theft of government property, and parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building. Riddle, who was sentenced in federal court in Washington, D.C. also was fined over $700.

His lawyers asked for 30 months of probation, followed by community service. They didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

“Jason acted impulsively, but not violently,” they said in a court document. They said Riddle has been law-abiding since the incident and has “done nothing to suggest that he intends to steal, harm others, or unlawfully disrupt government administration.”

Riddle had detailed his experiences in a television interview. The supporter of former President Donald Trump said he has no regrets about joining the mob that entered the Capitol, but criticized those who committed acts of vandalism and violence.

While inside the building he found a liquor cabinet inside a lawmaker’s office and helped himself to some wine. An affidavit says Riddle also admitted he took a leather-bound book titled “Senate Procedure,” which he sold for $40.

A mine-sniffing dog, credited with detecting more than 200 explosives in the Ukrainian war, has been recognised for his bravery.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Patron, the pint-sized Jack Russell terrier, as "a wonderful little sapper" (a military engineer).

And on Sunday, Patron - whose work has prevented countless injuries and deaths, and who has become a canine symbol of Ukrainian patriotism - was presented with a medal, in recognition of his dedication.

Mr Zelenskyy presented the award at a news conference in Kyiv with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Patron barked and wagged his tail, prompting laughter from the audience while Mr Trudeau patted his pockets as though looking for a dog treat.

Mr Zelenskyy said: "Today, I want to award those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines...together with our heroes, a wonderful little sapper - Patron - who helps not only to neutralise explosives, but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where there is a mine threat."

The award also went to Patron's owner, Myhailo Iliev, a major in the Civil Protection Service.
