1) Congressman draws fire for calling evolution, Big Bang ‘lies from the pit of hell’
By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor
Washington (CNN) – A U.S. congressman is attracting
attention and criticism for an online video that shows him blasting
evolution and the Big Bang theory as “lies from the pit of hell” in a
recent speech at a church event in his home state of Georgia.“All that stuff I was taught about evolution, embryology, the Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell,” U.S Rep. Paul Broun said in an address last month at a banquet organized by Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia. “And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”
Broun, a medical doctor by training, serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.Speaking at Liberty Baptist Church’s Sportsman’s Banquet on September 27, he said that “a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth.”“I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old,” Broun said in the speech, which Liberty Baptist Church posted on its website via YouTube. “I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says."Scientists say that the Earth is roughly 4.5 billion years old and that the universe dates back 13.7 billion years. http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/10/congressman-draws-fire-for-calling-evolution-big-bang-lies-from-the-pit-of-hell/?hpt=hp_t2
2) Transcript: GOP Rep. Scott DesJarlais urged abortion
NASHVILLE, Tenn.— A freshman congressman running for re-election on a pro-life platform urged his pregnant mistress to get an abortion a decade ago, according to a transcript of the recorded conversation. The undated phone recording appears to have been made before Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais’ divorce from his wife, Susan, was finalized in 2001. In the conversation, DesJarlais tells the unidentified woman that he was concerned that she has delayed getting an abortion, and that he was willing to travel to Atlanta with her to get the procedure done. http://www.bostonherald.com/news/us_politics/view.bg?articleid=1061166685&srvc=rss
3) FL GOP Governor Rick Scott Gives Out Phone Sex Number In Lieu Of Florida Meningitis Hotline
Florida governor Rick Scott accidentally sent constituents seeking information on a fungal meningitis outbreak to a phone sex hotline.
WUSF reports the gaffe was first noticed by readers after the station published a number Scott reeled off during a Florida Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the day Florida's first death from the outbreak was confirmed:
"You can call the Dept. of Health's toll-free, 24 hour hotline set up in response to this," Scott said reading off an 866 number. When WUSF posted that telephone number as part of its web story, we were quickly notified by a reader that the number instead connected to an adult telephone line.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/10/rick-scott-phone-sex-hotline-meningitis_n_1954060.html
"Hello boys, thank you for calling me on my anniversary," is how the recording opens. A young female voice then directs "existing callers" to press one, and so on.
