Good Person/Hero of the Week: School run mum pulls 91-year-old woman from burning bungalow

 This week's good person/hero is a woman who was walking her son home from school when she noticed a fire in an a home and ran over to see if anyone was inside. She saved a life. Here's the story from BBC News>>>>

School run mum pulls 91-year-old woman from burning bungalow

A mother broke away from the school run to pull a 91-year-old woman out of a burning bungalow. Lauren Mottram, 29, was walking with her son on Thursday morning when she spotted flames coming from Muriel Heathcote's home in Blackwell, Derbyshire, England. She ran into the smoke-filled building, found Mrs. Heathcote and pulled her out. Ms. Mottram's bravery won her praise from the fire service and gratitude from the woman's family.  

 "When I got through the door it was just completely full of smoke - it just hit you straight away in your throat and eyes," she said. "I couldn't see her but she was shouting, 'help me, help me', and I managed to get to her. "She was trying to get out of the living room but she couldn't touch her walking frame because it was too hot." After pulling her to safety, Ms. Mottram knocked on the door of the neighboring bungalow in Alfreton Road to alert the woman inside that the fire could spread. 

 "I spoke to the fire brigade manager afterwards. She thanked me and said how brave it was of me to run in," she said. "But it was just natural instinct really. I'd do the same again and hope someone would do it for me if I needed help."

Mrs Heathcote was taken to hospital to be treated for the effects of smoke inhalation but is due to be discharged later. Her rescuer was also checked over by hospital staff as a precaution. 

Mrs Heathcote's grandson Lee Stuchbury said: "She was willing to put her life at risk to run in and save my Nan. "There's not too many about who would do that nowadays. We're really proud of her." A joint police and fire service investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.

Good People of the Week: Capitol Policeman Leads Mob Away from Senate / Lesbian Daughter Turns in Her Mother for Crimes

Today's "Good person of the week" is really about 2 heroes. One faced a mob and saved many lives, and the other saw the criminal behavior of her own mother and turned her in. 

GOOD PERSON #1  It takes a LOT of courage to face an angry mob yielding weapons, especially when you're only one man.  That's what Quick-thinking Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman did during the Insurrection at the Capitol Building last week. The CBS Video is below. He is a true American. He is a hero (not the criminals who invaded the Capitol)

GOOD PERSON #2   It takes a lot of courage to turn in your own mother for criminal behavior. But that's exactly what happened when a lesbian daughter in Massachusetts did when she learned her mother took part in the criminal insurrection at the Capitol this month.  Bravo to the daughter!  Help this hero afford college by donating to her college fund. #1 How a lone Capitol Police officer lured rioters away from the Senate chambers

A US Capitol Police officer bounded up the stairs of the Capitol building, a growing mob of insurrectionists behind him. Using himself as "bait," he lured the rioters away from the entrance to the Senate chambers, where lawmakers were still debating an objection to Arizona's Electoral College vote count.

That man is Officer Eugene Goodman. Footage from Wednesday's attack on the Capitol shows him leading the mob of Trump supporters in the opposite direction of the Senate chambers after he noticed it was unguarded.

Officer Eugene Goodman herded the rioters away from the Senate Chambers at 2:14 p.m. Senators were alerted that protesters had breached the Capitol building just one minute earlier, according to CNN's timeline of events from Wednesday's riot. Vice President Mike Pence wouldn't be evacuated from the Senate until 2:30 p.m.

Helena Duke identified her mother, Therese Duke, her aunt Annie Lorenz, and her uncle Richard Lorenz in the clip as those included in a group of Trump supporters confronting a Black woman. 

“Hi this is the liberal lesbian of the family who has been kicked out multiple times for her views and for going to BLM protests to care what happens to me,” Helena Duke tweeted on Thursday before naming her family members. Helena Duke seized the opportunity to shame her mother, who she claims is a long-standing Trump supporter. "Her actions were appalling and I did not think she could possibly stoop this low," the 18-year-old told Newsweek. "I do find her participation in the insurrection extremely hypocritical as she has kicked me out of the house for attending BLM protests."

A LinkedIn profile for Therese Duke marks UMass Memorial Health Care as her employer, and Helena Duke also confirmed in Twitter replies that her mom worked for the medical center. “Over the past 24 hours we have received numerous expressions of concern through social media regarding a UMass Memorial caregiver who may have been involved in this week’s violent events at the nation’s capitol,” the provider wrote. “The employee in question is no longer a part of our organization.”

Heroes of the Month: Animal Rescuers - Our Friends Dianne & One Eagle

 Our friends Dianne and One Eagle work with animal rescues in Florida, and they spend countless

3 of the 24 dogs in deplorable conditions

 hours helping homeless pets.
  On New Year's Eve, Dianne told me she was involved in a huge backyard rescue operation. Here's the story from Dianne:

I ended up helping to get 24 dogs out of a backyard breeder situation eight of which turned out to be pregnant two were blind all are in rescue! Really bad conditions basically standing in sewage... that’s what I did for New Year’s Eve.  Some dogs are pregnant and  two are blind and a local rescue took some and a rescue from Virginia drove all the way down to get the rest. Kudos to these rescues for helping to put these poor dogs in foster homes.

DIANNE TALKED THE COUPLE INTO RELEASING THE DOGS TO A RESCUE:
Dianne said:  I was able to talk her into giving them up and so in their best interest we got them all which is a miracle.   I still can’t believe that we talked her into letting them all go every single one. But this is how our pet stores get their dogs and this is how some people make a living

CONTACTING THE RESCUES: Dianne and was instrumental in contacting the rescues and notifying them of the grave situation. An elderly couple were "backyard breeders" and fell ill, and couldn't take care of the 24 dogs in their care. These dog were living in filth. Walking around in feces, under fed.

Hero of the Month: Groom Saves Drowning Boy!

We like to spotlight people who make a difference in the lives of others and act as heroes. Here's a  story about a man who jumped off a bridge to rescue a drowning boy. It all happened at the man's wedding, during his wedding photo shoot. He didn't hesitate to dive off a bridge to save the child.

This heroic groom probably didn’t expect to play the role of Superman on his wedding day. 

Canadian newlyweds Clayton and Brittany Cook were posing for photos in a park in Kitchener, Ontario after their ceremony on Friday when Clayton noticed a young boy struggling to swim in the park’s pond. He promptly jumped down to the water’s edge and helped the boy out.

Photographer Darren Hatt posted photos of the incident to his Facebook page, where they’ve been shared over five hundred times.

A group of kids followed the couple around while they took photos in Victoria Park, Brittany told HuffPost. Neither she nor Hatt noticed that one boy had fallen into the water until Clayton sprang into action.

“It was my turn to get my solo pictures taken so Clay was hanging out by the pond waiting,” Brittany told HuffPost. “We had three kids following us around [and] Clay noticed there was only two kids he could see... he walked over to check on them and noticed the kids looking at the water and one kid was struggling to swim, so Clay jumped down on a rock ledge closer to the water and pulled him out.”

The kids continued hanging out in the park after the incident, and the Cooks enjoyed the rest of their wedding night, Brittany added. The couple didn’t think much of the incident at first but later realized the value of Clayton’s quick thinking.

“Now it’s hitting us more that if we weren’t in the right place at the right time, things may have gone differently and perhaps even tragically,” Brittany said.

Hero of the Month: Dr. Saves a Life on a Plane

We think it's important to point out everyday heroes. One such is a doctor named Anil Punjabi who saved the life of a woman on a plane flying from Boston to Minneapolis.  

 

A Boston doctor saved a woman from an apparent drug overdose on an airplane

Anil Punjabi hates flying.
So on his flight Friday from Boston to Minneapolis, he prepared for his anxiety by putting on his eye mask, headphones, and taking some motion sickness medicine. He said he was just about to fall asleep when he heard an attendant on the Spirit Airlines flight ask if there was a doctor aboard.
Punjabi, a third-year cardiology fellow at Boston Medical Center, told Boston.com the way the question was asked jolted him from his near-sleeping state. 

“I whipped off my eye mask, undid my seatbelt, and jumped out into the aisle,” the 32-year-old doctor said. “And I actually, I don’t know why, I ran towards the back. I didn’t even know where the person was or where they needed help.”

Two seats behind his own, Punjabi saw a few people surrounding a fellow passenger. When he reached them, he saw the woman was unresponsive — her face was gray, her lips blue.
Punjabi said when he checked, he found she had a pulse.

“I grabbed her underneath the arms and picked her up and brought her into the middle aisle,” he said.
Another passenger who told him she was an OBGYN nurse came over and offered to help, and a flight attendant brought over a medical bag. Punjabi said he started performing mouth-to-mouth CPR as the nurse and an EMT trainee onboard began chest compressions on the woman.
Punjabi said when the nurse cut off the patient’s clothes as part of the life-saving procedures, a syringe fell out of the woman’s bra. Needles are not a prohibited item by TSA, according to a spokesman for the agency.

“The nurse told me about it and looked at her arms and said she had needle tracks on her arms,” Punjabi said. “So at that point, both of us figured this was an overdose.”
Punjabi said they administered glucose and an EpiPen to the woman.

“At that point we just kept working on her, switching out people who were doing chest compressions and just continuing to breathe for her,” he said.

  

The group continued the measures to keep the woman alive until the flight made an emergency landing in Buffalo 25 minutes later, he said. 

Punjabi said once the plane landed, emergency responders took the woman into an ambulance where they administered Narcan, an opioid-overdose reversal drug. Within a minute, he said, she was walking around the ambulance.

The Boston Medical Center fellow, who sees injuries related to overdoses every day working at the hospital, said seeing the situation onboard a plane was “striking.” He suggested that officials should consider carrying Narcan on planes.

Spirit Airlines and Buffalo Niagara International Airport did not respond to a requests for comment.
A spokeswoman from MassPort said the agency’s fire and rescue teams are equipped with Narcan at its facilities and aboard flights at the gate. 

“I just think it was an unfortunate situation,” Punjabi said. “And even though I was able to save one life, I think there’s a lot more work that needs to be done. I think this is bigger than a person almost dying on a plane. I think it should open people’s eyes that this is a bigger problem.”
