Today is a big day in our family. We welcomed a new Foster Dog into our family. Our friend Shelley, who works with Dachshund Rescue of North America told us about a little senior Dachshund/Chihuahua mix who was in the Anne Arundel County Animal Control shelter since June 10.

The shelter had run out of room and they had to put this tiny, frightened dog in the cat room. If we didn't take him in as a foster, the alternative was not good. So, of course we said Yes. THE INTRODUCTION - Our three canine kids welcomed him, including Tyler. Dash walked around the house and investigated. He found a pillow and got comfortable. He was nervous though when thunderstorms rumbled outside. He let me (Rob) give him a bath, clean his ears and cut his nails with no problem.

ABOUT DASH - He's 10 years old, and just 8 pounds. He's in good health, although he's going to get a dental cleaning. The pet history gave more insight into him: His birthday is in August, likely 2007. - He was never trained, so he's going to learn a lot with us! - Great with other dogs

- When a 4 year old girl pulled hard on his tail he nipped her. The girl should have been reprimanded, but since they never trained Dash, it's obvious the family doesn't train their human kids. - He doesn't know how to play with toys, but he is said to like a ball. - He's heartworm and lyme disease free
Looking to adopt a great Senior Dachshund?
Gillian may be 13 years old, but he's got a lot of life in him. Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue has just taken in this sweet boy, as his family moved into a place that doesn't allow dogs.
Meet Gilligan, a very active senior boy who wants to be your snuggle buddy. Gilligan does not act his age. He loves to go on walks, meander in the yard and play with toys. Gilligan is a talker; he will let you know when he wants attention and a belly rub. He has lived with other dachshunds and is friendly to other small dogs he meets on his walks. Gilligan is not so sure about the big dogs, and we don’t know how he reacts to cats. He’s happy to meet new humans and he grew up with teenagers.
Gilligan is housebroken, but he does mark inside so he’s being retrained with a belly band. He’s heart worm negative, up-to-date on his shots and he will soon be neutered and receive a much needed dental cleaning. Gilligan is in great shape. He’s a trim 12.5 pounds and has no trouble getting around or jumping onto the couch to be next to you – not that we encourage that! Gilligan isn’t crate trained and prefers to sleep on the couch at night. We are training him to sleep in a cozy dog bed instead.
Gilligan’s family lost their home and could not keep him. He has many years of love and play left to give. Gilligan would love to be your forever companion.

A month
ago in Palm Beach County, Florida, 28 Dachshunds were
rescued from
deplorable conditions in a home owned by a 65 year old woman that ran a
"puppy mill" in her filthy rat-infested, feces- filled home. She was
arrested. All of the dogs went to the local humane society, and 7 of
them (some of the more sickly) were taken in from the Dachshund Rescue of Southern Florida who is doing a fundraiser to help cover their vet costs. ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - A 65-year-old St. Lucie County woman was
arrested Monday and charged with 28 counts of animal cruelty,
according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara.
Detectives
were notified of Beverly Louise Shott's home in the 3500 block of
Seminole Road and informed that several dogs were living in filthy
conditions.

"The conditions in which Shott was living and
raising these animals was deplorable," said Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.
"Animal feces was caked into the rugs, rats were roaming the house and
28 mature dogs and puppies were running free in the home. After
examination by a veterinarian, it was determined that all of the dogs
were infested with fleas and worms."
Shott was breeding the dogs
at her home and then selling them through a business she owned, Sheriff
Mascara said. The business is Discount Tackle off of Old Dixie Highway
in Fort Pierce.
Employees at a neighboring business say she
occasionally had a couple dachshunds with her at the store. They never
suspected so many were living at home. However, employees say they knew
she was selling the dogs. They say she had signs posted along US 1
advertising the dog sales. They have since been removed.
According
to the Sheriff, the dogs were seized by Animal Care & Control and
turned over to the St. Lucie County Humane Society pending the outcome
of the case and civil seizure process.
Shott was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on $28,000 bond. She posted bail Monday evening.
The St. Lucie County Humane Society says it will be at least 30 days until they will know if the dogs will be adopted out.

ABOUT RUARI - Ruari is a
9 year old black and tan smooth coat sweetheart. He came into foster as
an owner-surrender. Ruari is such a good boy! We are learning that he
loves to play tug, snuggle in the big bed, and go for walks. GOOD
WITH OTHER DOGS! He gets along just great with our two other doxies, a
female and a male and they play together. No aggression issues have been
witnessed. He rests peacefully all night in his crate and during the
day when we are all at work and school. When we come home, he has free
roam of the house and follows us around wagging his tail. We have
noticed that he will slip out of the house at a moment’s notice if we
are not super careful, but will come back to us if we don’t chase and
yell. So therefore a fenced-in yard is probably a good idea for Ruari,
or at least he would need a micro-chip. Ruari will make a great
addition to a family with another dachshund or other dog that he can pal
around with. Or in a home with someone who will take Ruari to a dog

the petite and oh, so sweet Miss Bridget. Bridget is eight years young
and 8 pounds of loving dachshund. Her owner had to say goodbye when
she entered a nursing home. Bridget was scared and sad at first, but
she quickly learned that her foster parents and their two dachshunds
were her new best friends. Now she plays with her buddies in the fenced
back yard and snuggles with her foster parents on the couch. Bridget
is crate trained and housebroken; she needs to be let out about every
two hours when she isn't crated. She is learning commands and walks
well on a leash. Bridget loves her food and uses her big eyes to tempt
you to feed her more. Her favorite place to hang out is the back
cushions of the couch. She is spayed and up-to-date on her shot. She
will be ready to adopt shortly after some additional vetting. Bridget's
adoption fee is $150.

leg for two senior Dachshunds who were brought into the rescue (from a divorced

MEET MILO
Hi I'm Milo! I'm a senior male dog with a super-sweet
personality. I'm a very docile red long-haired (mostly my tail) dachshund registered
with the American Canine Association. I LOVE to take life easy. Life is a gift,
and I'm a mellow guy. In fact, I'm cuddler and will come up to you and sit on
your lap if you're sitting on the floor.
Sadly, I'm a victim of a divorce (like my
brother Max, an 11 year old black and tan doxie also up for adoption) where my
human parents split and I was placed in a foster home.
I really need to be in a home with another dog. I grew up with Max and am not happy unless I have another dog around.
I LOVE food. I confess I've eaten some of my
brother's food, so I'm about 24 pounds. I need to lose weight and working on
it. I'm neutered, heartworm negative and up to date on all vaccinations through
March 2016! My teeth are in good shape and I'm healthy except for the weight
thing, but we all like treats. I take heartworm and flea preventative on the
21st of each month.
I'm a happy guy who loves slow walks!
I normally eat twice a day, around 7 am and 6
p.m. Before bedtime, if you get out a milk bone I will stop whatever he's doing
to jump into my bed. Then, if you partially cover the crate with a blanket, it
makes me feel secure so I can sleep through the night.
I don't mind taking a bath, and getting my
nails trimmed is no big deal (although a lot of dachshunds don't like it).
That's how easy going I am!
I came into the rescue on Aug. 2, 2015 with my 11
year old brother Max (and we grew up together, so if you're looking for a pair
of sweet seniors, we would love to be adopted together).
