A vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man ended up on a residence’s balcony after a wild crash in Chino early Tuesday morning, and police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Preliminary information indicates that the car, a Mustang, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed through a fence and careened into a riverbed around 12:30 a.m.

A press release issued by the City of Chino around eight hours later confirmed that the crash occurred at 12:22 a.m. and involved a Mustang traveling southbound in the 12600 block of San Antonio Avenue.

The Mustang had struck a curb and the concrete side of the drainage canal, the city stated. “The collision caused the vehicle to go airborne before colliding into the home,” officials said. “Upon arrival, police officers discovered the Mustang had collided into the home’s second story, coming to rest atop a patio cover.”

The woman who lives at the home where the car crashed said she thought it was an airplane. “We were up in bed sleeping and it sounded like a plane drove through our house,” Andrea Kobzeff said. “It woke us up [and we found] there was a car parked on the second floor of our home. It’s just devastating.”

Kobzeff added that the road where the car was believed to be traveling is a hotspot for drivers who like to speed and do donuts.

The four occupants of the Mustang were all taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries. The driver, 21-year-old Chino resident Jacob Torrez, remains under medical care in serious condition, the city of Chino said.

Of the other three passengers, one of whom was 19 years old and the other two were minors, the city added.

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash, officials further elaborated. They did not say if Torrez was facing any charges.
