Hero of the Week: Diver finds gold ring in ocean in Barbados finds owner from 47 Years before

Here's a story of how Alex Davis, a professional freediver off the coast of Barbados found a ring and managed to trace it back to the owner who lost it there 47 years before!  Heroes come in all professions, and this diver gave a precious gift to an octagenarian!

Diver finds gold ring in ocean in Barbados, reunites it with owner who lost it 47 years ago

CBS NEWS November 11, 2024

In 1977, Morgan Perigo's gold college graduation ring was lost to the ocean while on a trip to Barbados with his wife and two young sons. Perigo, who graduated from McMaster University in Canada in 1965, searched for the ring in vain.

"One day I took my younger son and waded into the ocean. He was knocked over by a wave, so I reached to grab hold of him. He pulled on my hand and my Mac Alumni ring came off," Perigo, now 83, said in an email to the university. "We searched for it but were unsuccessful."

Forty-seven years later, Perigo got his ring back. The surprise reunion unfolded thanks to Alex Davis, a professional freediver who recently discovered the jewelry while using an underwater metal detector. There were three clues inscribed on the ring -- the name of the school, the year 1965 and the initials FMP, Davis told the university.

"[It's] not surprising the gold has tarnished around the stone setting and the stag emblem is a bit worn down but overall it's in great condition," Davis said.

The diver contacted the university and shared photos of the ring.

"I found a McMaster University signet ring with three initials on the inside," he wrote in an email to the school. "I found it metal detecting in Barbados this morning and suspect it's been lost for some time."

Alumni officer Laura Escalante received the email and her search eventually led to Frederick Morgan Perigo, a 1965 mathematics major.

When contacted by the school, Perigo confirmed the ring was indeed the one that slipped off his finger nearly half a century ago.

On the eve of his 83rd birthday, Perigo received a FedEx package sent from Barbados. Inside was his graduation ring.

"What a wonderful, unexpected 83rd birthday present," he said

Read the book "The Christmas Dog" by Melody Carlson

In September, I picked up the book "The Christmas Dog" by Melody Carlson and decided I would read it and share it before the holidays. It was a good book that makes you think about your beliefs vs. your behaviors, and how a little dog can change your world for the better. Today's blog is my take on the book and a summary of it.

MY TAKE- It's about a senior citizen who assumes the worst in her neighbor, a stray dog, her granddaughter and others, and is proven wrong by all of them. The woman keeps talking about being a Christian and trying to think the best of people while doing the opposite throughout almost the entire book. Fortunately, she gets several wake up calls! I confess while reading it, I wanted shout at the woman and tell her to stop being so selfish and suspicious. Fortunately, a little dog helped turn her world around. It's a good story that will keep you reading, and make you think about practicing what you think you believe in.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations? Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet. But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

Thanksgiving Quiz! What's the Difference Between Maize and Corn?

Here's a quiz you can give people at your Thanksgiving Table! I didn't think there was much of a difference between Maize and corn, but there are several differences. Today's blog, from a posting from the globebag company (that sells bags for corn and maize) will explain them!

Difference Between Maize and Corn

The Surprising Difference Between Corn and Maize

While maize and corn share many similarities, it’s a common mistake to confuse them. Knowing what makes these foods different provides information on what will sell best at the next market and what to grow on your farm. Read on to learn more about the difference between maize and corn and ensure you yield the desired harvest.

What Is Maize?

Maize is a crop that has been cultivated in what is now the Americas for thousands of years, and it’s one of the most valuable crops worldwide. It’s a grass that grows up to 30 feet in height, producing a cob and an ear of kernels.

Maize comes in various colors, including white, yellow, and red. This crop is highly versatile and used for food, animal feed, biofuels, and industrial products.

What Is Corn?

Like maize, corn is also a type of grass, but it grows to be around only 8 to 10 feet tall on average. It has a cob with kernels that people across the globe use for food.

Corn is categorized as either sweet corn or field corn. People harvest sweet corn when the kernels are still immature; these are used for human consumption.

In contrast, field corn fully matures and is primarily used for animal feed, ethanol production, and other industrial purposes (although it’s still safe for human consumption).

The Fundamental Differences Between Maize and Corn

Although both crops have similar appearances and edibility, they have unique attributes. The primary difference between maize and corn is that maize is used predominantly for industrial, non-food purposes. It’s used to creates ethanol, animal feed, and even plastic. Maize also has a higher oil content, making it ideal for industrial use. On the other hand, corn is a food source for both humans and animals.

The Nutritional Differences Between Maize and Corn

When it comes to nutrition, maize and corn are relatively similar. Both have similar amounts of calories, carbohydrates, and dietary fiber. However, the primary difference between maize and corn is that corn contains more antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals such as potassium and magnesium.

The Benefits of Both Maize and Corn

Maize and corn both offer a range of benefits. Maize is incredibly versatile thanks to its high oil content. It’s also an excellent source of protein and amino acids. Similarly, corn is high in fiber, making it a great food source for digestion. It’s also relatively low in fat, making it ideal for weight loss.

If you’re hoping to start planting, understanding the differences between these crops is essential. The two might seem interchangeable, specifically when it comes to cooking, but there’s no doubt each offers its own benefits and uses.

HISTORY: In November 1558 Elizabethan Age begins

On November 1, 1558, the Elizabethan Age began in England. That was when Queen Elizabeth succeeded the throne. That's today's history blog, thanks to History Com!

November 17, 1558, The Elizabethan Age Begins

Queen Mary I, the monarch of England and Ireland since 1553, died and was succeeded by her 25-year-old half-sister, Elizabeth.

The two half-sisters, both daughters of King Henry VIII, had a stormy relationship during Mary’s five-year reign. Mary, who was brought up as a Catholic, enacted pro-Catholic legislation and made efforts to restore the pope to supremacy in England.

A Protestant rebellion ensued, and Queen Mary imprisoned Elizabeth, a Protestant, in the Tower of London on suspicion of complicity. After Mary’s death, Elizabeth survived several Catholic plots against her; although her ascension was greeted with approval by most of England’s lords, who were largely Protestant and hoped for greater religious tolerance under a Protestant queen.

Under the early guidance of Secretary of State Sir William Cecil, Elizabeth repealed Mary’s pro-Catholic legislation, established a permanent Protestant Church of England, and encouraged the Calvinist reformers in Scotland.

Henry VIII

In foreign affairs, Elizabeth practiced a policy of strengthening England’s Protestant allies and dividing her foes. Elizabeth was opposed by the pope, who refused to recognize her legitimacy, and by Spain, a Catholic nation that was at the height of its power. In 1588, English-Spanish rivalry led to an abortive Spanish invasion of England in which the Spanish Armada, the greatest naval force in the world at the time, was destroyed by storms and a determined English navy.

With increasing English domination at sea, Elizabeth encouraged voyages of discovery, such as Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the world and Sir Walter Raleigh’s expeditions to the North American coast.

The long reign of Elizabeth, who became known as the “Virgin Queen” for her reluctance to endanger her authority through marriage, coincided with the flowering of the English Renaissance, associated with such renowned authors as William Shakespeare. By her death in 1603, England had become a major world power in every respect, and Queen Elizabeth I passed into history as one of England’s greatest monarchs

My Adventure with Vertigo - and treatment

If you've ever had vertigo, you'll know what I recently experienced (and today I am still dealing with it - one  week later. Fortunately, it has toned down, and is not as extreme, but at various times during a day it hits. Today's blog is about "Benign Vertigo," my experience, and how they treated it.

MY VERTIGO ADVENTURE - Last week, I was working on my computer at home and after a couple of hours, tried to stand up and the room was spinning. I was 100% fine before, but getting up triggered it. That entire day, I kept stumbling with severe dizziness. Even laying in bed at night, everything was spinning, so the next day, I went to the local clinic, which sent me to an Emergency Room because they didn't have an EKG and other things.

I was in a room at the ER from 9:30am to 2:30pm. They gave me an EKG and full blood panel to see if was heart-related (it wasn't) because I'm over 60. Fortunately, I've not had heart issues because I try to stay fit.  Daily Exercise helps!  They also wanted to do a brain scan, to see if there was a blockage, growth, etc. I told them they would find an empty space within. :)

Seriously, because I could feel pressure in my left ear and to the left of my left eye,  that told me it was ear and sinuses... so I declined.  The Physician's assistant agreed that it wasn't really needed, but it was a cautionary procedure. I still turned it down.

They put me on two Meds (See below) that already knocked the Vertigo down by more than 80% by day 2.

WHAT DOES THE WORLD LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU HAVE VERTIGO?

WHAT IS BENIGN VERTIGO? -Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common inner ear disorder  that causes brief, repeated episodes of vertigo, or a feeling of spinning, when you change head position.   Small “crystals” called otoliths that are usually suspended in gelatinous material inside the ear got loose, moving around in the ear canals and causing a sickening spinning feeling. Symptoms include: Dizziness, Loss of balance, Hearing loss, Vision problems Nausea, and vomiting. (Fortunately, I was only dizzy and had loss of balance)

WHAT HAPPENS TO CAUSE IT? BPPV occurs when tiny calcium carbonate crystals, called otoconia, break free and float in the fluid-filled semicircular canals of the inner ear. This confuses the brain about your body's position.

CAUSES - Causes BPPV can occur due to a number of possible reasons, including head trauma, labyrinthitis, migraine, or Ménière disease. However, about half of BPPV cases have no known cause.   You might have an increased risk of developing BPPV if you have a family history of BPPV, or if you've had a head injury or inner ear infection.

TREATMENT AND DURATION -  BPPV can often go away on its own within a few weeks or months. I was prescribed Meclizine - an anti-dizziness med, and methylprednisolone - a steroid. The findings suggest that there is a critical time slot in which steroid treatment could be effective. Patients treated within 24 hours after symptom onset had a better restitution of vestibular function compared with the patients who received treatment after 25 to 72 hours. (Source: PubMed Central : Steroids for Acute Vestibular Neuronitis, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov › articles ) PMC6380443)

A medical professional can also perform a canalith repositioning procedure to treat it sooner. During this procedure, the patient performs a series of simple, slow head movements.

BPPV can affect people of all ages, but it's most common in adults over 50.

SELF-TREATMENT - How do you self-treat benign positional vertigo? Lay on your bed and follow the Epley Manuever outlined below.Graphic of the Epely Maneuver

HOW DO TO THE EPLEY MANEUVER AT HOME

Follow these steps if the problem is with your right ear:

  1.  Start by sitting on a bed.
  2. Turn your head 45 degrees to the right.
  3. Quickly lie back, keeping your head turned.
  4. Your shoulders should now be on the pillow, and your head should be reclined. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Turn your head 90 degrees to the left, without raising it. Your head will now be looking 45 degrees to the left.
  6. Wait another 30 seconds.
  7. Turn your head and body another 90 degrees to the left, into the bed. Wait another 30 seconds.
  8. Sit up on the left side.

Idiot of the Week: Speeding Mustang Crashes on balcony of Southern California home

This week's idiot is a young driver who decided to speed on a highway and may have been drinking. His Mustang careened off a California freeway and crashed into a home below. Here's the story.

Alcohol possibly a factor in crash that left Mustang on balcony of Southern California home

by: Will Conybeare, KTLA TV Posted: Nov 12, 2024

A vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man ended up on a residence’s balcony after a wild crash in Chino early Tuesday morning, and police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Preliminary information indicates that the car, a Mustang, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed through a fence and careened into a riverbed around 12:30 a.m.

A press release issued by the City of Chino around eight hours later confirmed that the crash occurred at 12:22 a.m. and involved a Mustang traveling southbound in the 12600 block of San Antonio Avenue.

The Mustang had struck a curb and the concrete side of the drainage canal, the city stated. “The collision caused the vehicle to go airborne before colliding into the home,” officials said. “Upon arrival, police officers discovered the Mustang had collided into the home’s second story, coming to rest atop a patio cover.”

The woman who lives at the home where the car crashed said she thought it was an airplane. “We were up in bed sleeping and it sounded like a plane drove through our house,” Andrea Kobzeff said. “It woke us up [and we found] there was a car parked on the second floor of our home. It’s just devastating.”

Kobzeff added that the road where the car was believed to be traveling is a hotspot for drivers who like to speed and do donuts.

The four occupants of the Mustang were all taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries. The driver, 21-year-old Chino resident Jacob Torrez, remains under medical care in serious condition, the city of Chino said.

Of the other three passengers, one of whom was 19 years old and the other two were minors, the city added.

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash, officials further elaborated. They did not say if Torrez was facing any charges.

Heroes of the Week: Arkansas couple uses wedding fund to save Goldendoodle

This week's heroes of the week are a young couple from Arkansas, Dylan McCay and Emily Roberts who saw a facebook posting about a dog apparently struck by a car, and in serious condition on a road. They jumped into action and decided to spend their wedding savings to rescue the dog. WOW. They are true heroes. Today's blog is about their story.

Arkansas couple uses wedding fund to save Goldendoodle

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — A central Arkansas man, performing a selfless act of service and rescuing a Goldendoodle that was stranded and on the brink of death, acted on an inclination to help.

On Halloween night, Dylan McCay was scrolling on Facebook when he saw a post that instantly grabbed his attention: an injured dog, abandoned on the side of the road, scared and desperate for help. This marked the beginning of an emotional journey for McCay and his fiancé, Emily Roberts.

“As I was just scrolling through all of the comments and stuff, I was seeing a decent amount of comments, and I was just like it doesn’t seem like anything’s in action yet, and this is definitely like a time urgent situation," McCay says.

He quickly jumped in his vehicle and embarked on a rescue mission. There it was. Between Conway and Greenbrier, McCay says she likely had been hit by a vehicle and moved over to a nearby driveway. He found her shivering and covered in blood.

“As I got closer to her, she started trying to crawl to me," McCay says.

Family members came to the sight to help. Covering the dog with blankets, they made the journey to Greenbrier Animal Hospital, and the diagnosis was not promising. The dog had bruised lungs, two fractured femurs-one of them an open fracture-and doctors were gravely concerned about infection.

“The original plan was that one would have to be amputated and the other would need a pretty serious reconstructive surgery," Roberts says.

No microchip was found either, and later they discovered the owner had been looking to rehome the dog.

“So this dog was basically just surrendered to the hospital, and so we kind of like looked at each other and looked at the dog, and we were just like we know what we have to do," Roberts says.

The dog was now a member of the family. Throughout the ordeal, a Facebook community came together by offering encouraging comment and donations.

“We just feel really blessed that people love her like we do and want to help her get better,” Roberts says.

A surgery surpassing $10,000 meant that McCay and Roberts cut into their wedding fund.

“And so that budget disappeared," McCay says.

They were doing everything they could to give the dog her life back, even traveling to Mississippi for an extensive surgery on Monday. Now, post-operation, the reconstruction was nothing short of successful.

“We went into the weekend thinking that she was going to get amputation on one leg, and then, the other leg hopefully fixed, but Monday morning they were confident that they could fix both of the legs, and that turned out to be true," Roberts says.

Now a part of the family, Dylan and Emily are looking forward to bringing the dog home to be with their other dogs. They plan to name it after a food item, like the rest of their pets, but for a middle name, they chose Acklin. Acklin is the name of the street they found her at.

The couple says they still have a long journey ahead, with physical therapy, vaccinations and spaying, but there is now light at the end of the tunnel.

FLASHBACK Nov 22, 2015: An Emotional Dog Rescue Day: Transporting Oscar

We've been working with dog rescues for over 15 years, and this story is one that resonates with me. 9 years ago, this 10-year-old Dachshund was purposely abandoned into a rescue. I was the one who had to meet the Dad, who did not want to give this boy up. But his wife demanded this little Dachshund be dumped because their human child developed an "allergy" to the dog. As I said in 2015, give the girl some Benadryl and deal with it. DOGS are children, too.  I was enraged at the mother of the family for her demands especially watching the father fall apart emotionally handing me the dog for the rescue. At least the dog went to a good home. Bottom line: If you or your kid develop an allergy, there's medication for that. TAKE IT. Don't be cruel to animals. This was 9 years ago, so I'm sure heartbroken little Oscar has since passed. But here's his story from 2015:

An Emotional Dog Rescue Day: Transporting Oscar

Oscar, scared in the front seat of our truck
We've been doing dog rescue transports for years and it's only once in a while that we are the emotional first stop when a former pet parent abandons their dog. Saturday, November 21 was one of those days involving a 9 year old mini-Dachshund named Oscar who weighs only 8 pounds.

I (Rob) did the transport while Tom ran errands so we could get everything accomplished. II met Oscar's dad in the parking lot of a hotel about 40 minutes between where he lived and where we are located. I was the first leg of a transport that would take Oscar to his new home in Rhode Island.
Oscar's mother and father adopted him as a puppy when he was less than a year old. They raised him. He became part of their family. Then, the parents had a human child. This is a story we hear way too much in rescue.

RIDICULOUS EXCUSES FOR ABANDONMENT COMMONLY INCLUDE:  "I had a baby and the baby has allergies to the dog, OR  I'm afraid the dog will hurt the baby (that's why you should TRAIN your dog and socialize them- but usually they "adopt" infants as their own and protect them), OR the dog is annoyed when the baby punches the dog or pulls the dog's tail (what dog wouldn't be?)"

OSCAR'S FEAR   - This time, the dad, who was obviously bonded with Oscar, was an emotional wreck.  When I met him in the parking lot of the arranged transport place, the dad got out of the car with Oscar, who knew something bad was happening. Dogs know. They sense people's emotions and watch people's actions.  As the dad gave me Oscar to hold, Oscar snapped at me - he was scared He didn't know what was happening to him.

WHAT DO DOGS THINK WHEN BEING ABANDONED?  Dogs wonder "who is this new person?"  / "Why is this new person taking me away from my dad of 9 years?"  /"What's going to happen to me?" /  "This new person doesn't know anything about how I like to play, sleep, eat..."  /"I'm afraid!"

SEEING THE BOND WITH HIS DAD - Knowing Oscar was afraid, I let  him sniff me until he settled. Then I held the leash as his dad walked from his car to my truck, putting in Oscar's 2 beds, blankets, container of food, and bag with medical history, etc.  Each time Oscar's dad took a step, Oscar stepped with him. I could tell they were bonded.

WHY WAS HE BEING ABANDONED AFTER 9 YEARS? - The dad said that although he had some allergies to Oscar's short, red, fur, his little girl has allergies, too. I held my tongue, because I have to focus on the dog. ** I wanted to tell the little girl to "deal with it and take benadryl" for 5-6 more years so Oscar could live the rest of his short life out with his only family. But I didn't.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DOGS, ALLERGIES AND KIDS - It's a fact that if you have a dog in your house and a child is born, the kid may get allergic reactions. HOWEVER, if they're continually exposed to the allergens, they eventually develop antibodies and resistance to the allergens (That's what allergy shots are- they inject the thing you're allergic to, into your bloodstream so you build up immunity to it).

THE EMOTIONAL ENDING - When I saw the dad hug and kiss Oscar goodbye, If I wasn't so emotional I would've been somewhat angry -because it was apparent to me that it really wasn't the dad's decision to let Oscar go. The dad cried and couldn't contain himself. Of course, neither could I. I cried, too. The dad could barely say anything other than "I'm sorry." He got in his car and continued to cry, as I did when I got in my truck. Oscar just stared up at me. This was heartbreaking.

Rob, Oscar and Trudy
THE RIDE TO TRANSPORTER #2 - I drove Oscar to Trudy, who was the second driver in the chain of drivers between Maryland and Rhode Island, where Oscar will live out his senior years with an older couple who previously had a Dachshund named Oscar who passed recently. I played music and talked with Oscar as I drove to meet Trudy. I kept him on the front passenger seat, continually rubbing the fur on his head and back of his neck, calming him (although he was still shaking in fear all the way to the next stop).

TRUDY TRANSPORT - I met Trudy at a predesignated spot and Oscar got more scared all over again. He snapped at first, but then warmed up. He had no idea what was happening to him. Again, it was heartbreaking to see this little guy so frightened. We quickly posed for a picture together, contacted the rescue coordinator that we were 15 minutes early, and I loaded Trudy's car with Oscar's stuff. Again, I got choked up as I watched her drive off. That poor little dog just lost his family today.

THE RESCUE- It was only thanks to Donna at Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue, that a home was immediately found for Oscar. Thanks to Katie in Virginia who set up the transport and managed to get all of the drivers who volunteered. Thanks to 8 drivers in different states from Maryland to Rhode Island who took time out of their Saturday to bring an innocent, abandoned, scared dog to a new home.

Dog rescue really takes a village, and it takes an emotional toll. However, we do it for the dogs.
People need to know that adopting a dog is the same as adopting a child - it's a LIFETIME commitment.  For more information about Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue, and for all of the dogs who are looking for a life-time home, visit: www.c2cdr.org. If you can't adopt or foster a dog, please consider making a donation that goes to the veterinary care of all the dogs we save.- Rob

POST TRANSPORT UPDATE: Rescue coordinator, Donna Gerhauser said: First, I want to thank Katie Wehner for pulling together this transport and all of the wonderful people who helped get Oscar to his new home. He is with his new dad who is over the moon in love with Oscar and overwhelmed with gratitude. I know it was sad and confusing for Oscar to leave his family but I really believe that this match was meant to be. Rob, I think that this Oscar was sent by his predecessor to mend his daddy's broken and lonely heart.

Fortunately this story had a happy ending.

History: November 1883 Railroads create the first time zones

Did you know it was because of railroads, that time zones were created? I did a paper on that topic in college because I thought it was fascinating. Once railroads had been built going east to west in the U.S., people realized because of arrival times, that there needed to be zones. But the first one who came up with that idea was Charles Dowd, a Yale-educated school principal in 1872. It took 11 years to happen. By Nov 18, 1883, the railroads moved forward with the adoption of four U.S. time zones, an idea that had been proposed The time zones, Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific, are still in place today. Today's blog is about that story.

Railroads created the first time zones in November 1883
History.com, Nov. 18, 2024

At exactly noon on November 18, American and Canadian railroads began using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times. The bold move was emblematic of the power shared by the railroad companies.

The need for continental time zones stemmed directly from the problems of moving passengers and freight over the thousands of miles of rail line that covered North America by the 1880s.

Since human beings had first begun keeping track of time, they set their clocks to the local movement of the sun. Even as late as the 1880s, most towns in the U.S. had their own local time, generally based on “high noon,” or the time when the sun was at its highest point in the sky.

As railroads began to shrink the travel time between cities from days or months to mere hours, however, these local times became a scheduling nightmare. Railroad timetables in major cities listed dozens of different arrival and departure times for the same train, each linked to a different local time zone.

(Image: Union Pacific Railroad)

Transcontinental Railroad

Efficient rail transportation demanded a more uniform time-keeping system. Rather than turning to the federal governments of the United States and Canada to create a North American system of time zones, the powerful railroad companies took it upon themselves to create a new time code system. The companies agreed to divide the continent into four time zones; the dividing lines adopted were very close to the ones we still use today.

Most Americans and Canadians quickly embraced their new time zones, since railroads were often their lifeblood and main link with the rest of the world. However, it was not until 1918 that Congress officially adopted the railroad time zones and put them under the supervision of the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Rare 'cotton candy' lobster in Saco, Maine!

Maine is all about lobster, and in July, a rare "Cotton Candy Lobster" was discovered in southeastern Maine.

SACO, Maine — Sea Salt Lobster in Saco, a restaurant and wholesale lobster seller, stumbled upon a rare "cotton candy" lobster Friday.

Restaurant owner Shawn McEwen said his team found the colorful guy during their grading process.

"So what we do is we break the lobster down based on size and quality, it's called grading. And so these guys as they were grading lobsters for size came across our new friend here that we are definitely not going to sell or cook," McEwen said. "It will be donated either to the museum or someone that has a private saltwater aquarium."

NEWS CENTER Maine was lucky enough to have a meet and greet with the colorful crustacean, flashing his specks of blue, yellow, and green.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), lobsters can come in many different colors including blue, light yellow, greenish-brown, grey, dusty orange, some calico, and some with spots.

Despite moving millions of lobster per year, McEwen said this is only the third cotton candy lobster he has seen in 16 years of business.

The average lobster size you order in a restaurant is between 1.25 and 1.5 pounds, but this cotton candy cutie was big, weighing in at 2.65 pounds.

Lobstermen must follow strict size and weight guidelines to help protect the lobster population. Lobsters must meet a minimum weight requirement of 1 pound and a maximum of 3-4 pounds, to be sold in Maine, according to lobsteranywhere.com.

"The State of Maine Harvesters were able to catch about 93.7 million lobsters last year out of the state and we rarely see guys like this that are blue," McEwen said. "We believe this was harvested somewhere in the Five Islands area based on where we buy from and the different people we buy from.

Idiot of the Week: Nevada Woman Steals Funds from Slain Officer for Daughter's Wedding and more

This week's idiot is one who is well known to police, not because she supports them but because she's a criminal. She's a former state Assembly and Las Vegas City Council member who was one of the fake GOP electors, too. She just can't stay out of trouble. Now, the "law and order party" candidate has 7 new charges against her for stealing money from a fund to build a statue to a slain police officer. The "law and order party" is once again the "break the law and order" party with this idiot being a prime example. Hopefully, she'll get the 20 years for each of the 7 charges she faces. Here's the idiot's story.

Nevada Woman Steals Funds from Slain Officer for Daughter's Wedding and more

By KEN RITTER, AP , September 9, 2024

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada Republican who ran unsuccessfully for state treasurer in 2022 pleaded not guilty Monday to two new charges and headed toward trial in two weeks on federal accusations she used funds raised for a statue honoring a slain police officer for political and personal costs, including her daughter’s wedding.

The new charges brought to seven the number of wire fraud and conspiracy counts against Michele Fiore, a former state Assembly and Las Vegas City Council member who has been suspended with pay from her elected position as a justice of the peace in rural Pahrump. Each count carries a possible penalty of 20 years in prison. Fiore had pleaded not guilty July 17 to a five-count criminal indictment.

Fiore and her defense attorney, Michael Sanft, invoked her right to a speedy trial and U.S. District Judge Jennifer Dorsey in Las Vegas said jury selection will begin Sept. 24. Sanft and federal prosecutors Dahoud Askar and Alexander Gottfried told the judge they expect trial can be completed by the second week of October. Askar and Gottfried declined outside court to speak with reporters.

Neither Fiore nor Sanft commented to reporters about the case. They were accompanied by Fiore’s friend, Sigal Chattah, a lawyer and conservative GOP firebrand who lost a bid for state attorney general in 2022 to Aaron Ford, a Democrat.

Chattah also is representing one of six Nevada Republican party members accused of submitting certificates to Congress falsely declaring Donald Trump the winner of the state’s 2020 presidential election. A state judge in Las Vegas dismissed that so-called fake elector case over a venue challenge by attorneys for defendants including state GOP chairman Michael McDonald. Ford is appealing that decision to the state Supreme Court.

Fiore, 54, is a sometimes flamboyant political figure best known for supporting gun ownership and backing states’ rights advocate Cliven Bundy during and after armed standoffs against federal officers in Bunkerville, Nevada, in 2014, and at a national wildlife refuge in Oregon in 2016.

A Good Idea: The Firehouse "Idiot Clause"

A Maine Fire department wants to hold idiots financially accountable for nuisance calls. I think this is overdue and brilliant, especially in tight budgets!

LIVERMORE FALLS (WGME) -- A fire department in Androscoggin County is asking town leaders for the right to bill people under certain circumstances.

"If you're drinking and driving, I think you're an idiot,” Livermore Falls Fire Chief Nathan Guptill said.

Right now, the town of Livermore Falls is considering billing people for the time their firefighters spend on nuisance calls.

Guptill calls it "an idiot clause."

"There's no reason to be behind the wheel drinking and driving or under the influence of anything. So if you do that stuff, I consider you an idiot," Guptill said. "Then, we should be able to bill their insurance company while we are sitting there tying up our resources."

If the town gives the OK, distracted drivers who cause an accident could also have to pay, as well as people with faulty alarm systems.

"And if they don't fix it, and we keep getting repeated calls there, that's what I call a nuisance call," Guptill said. “We have an alarm that goes off in town quite regularly. I'm going to say anywhere from $200 TO $500 every time we go to this call."

The fire chief says many insurance companies already pay for nuisance calls.

Should the town approve this, it will be up to an officer's judgment if someone gets billed.

Guptill says it could bring in several thousand dollars to the department and serve as a warning, but not everyone agrees with him.

"Whether they go out on a call or don't go out on a call, they're still getting paid. It's our taxes that fund them," Livermore Falls resident Bob Bradley said.

"They respond to calls like that because it's their job,” Livermore Falls resident Donald Chase said. “And if it ends up being a nuisance call, it should be the town that pays for it, regardless."

"If they need that to support the fire department, I say yeah,” Livermore Falls resident Jonathan Dayton said. “Those fellas are doing a lot. They're sacrificing like crazy, you know?"

The fire chief says there are a number of third-party companies who would handle the billing for them for a 10 percent fee. They would get the police report, bill the insurance company and send them a check.

Science! How the elephant got its wrinkles: A look at Elephant Trunks

If you've ever wondered how an elephant's trunk works, now you'll know and it has to do with the wrinkles- thanks to this latest research.

How the elephant got its wrinkles

Origin of the famed creases reveals how the trunk became the “most unbelievable grasping organ on the planet”

8 Oct 2024 By Sara Reardon, SCIENCE Magazine

An elephant’s trunk is so much more than a nose. The pachyderms use their prehensile probosces to pick up food, spray water or sand across their backs to cool off, and trumpet warnings to other elephants. Baby elephants even employ their trunks to nurse, sucking up milk and then spraying it into their mouths. “It’s the most unbelievable grasping organ on the planet,” says computational neuroscientist Michael Brecht of the Humboldt University of Berlin.

But why does the trunk —a muscular appendage without any bones —work so well? One key is an elephant’s famed wrinkles, which—on the trunk—act like hands and elbows, Brecht and colleagues report today in Royal Society Open Science. The team also discovered where these wrinkles come from in the first place—and how they help make trunks so versatile.

Elephants are Born with Wrinkled Trunks

When Andrew Schulz, a mechanical engineer and biophysicist at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, started to look at elephant trunks, he assumed their characteristic wrinkles developed over time as the animals used them repeatedly—much like smile lines that form in human faces. But he soon realized that even newborn elephants have wrinkly trunks.

Many baby animals—including humans—are born with random wrinkles because they have too much skin for their body shapes. Baby elephants’ trunk creases, by contrast, are consistently in the same places and form before birth, suggesting they have a specific purpose. “We think these wrinkles are very underrated,” Brecht says. To learn more, Schulz, Brecht, and their colleagues turned to two elephant species, Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and African elephants (Loxodonta africana), which are known to use their trunks in different ways.

Difference in Trunks of African and Asian Elephants

African elephants have two tough cartilage “fingers” at the ends of their trunks that allow them to pinch objects.

Asian elephants, by contrast, have one finger and one bulbous projection that they use to clamp large objects such as melons between their trunks and lower lips.

The researchers examined differences between the species in museum specimens, zoo animals, and photos. Asian elephant trunks, they found, contain more wrinkles: 126 of them, on average, compared with the 83 of African elephants. The extra creases might give the Asian species more flexibility to make up for not having an extra “finger,” Schulz says. In both species, the wrinkles were concentrated at a pivot point, which works like a muscular elbow to allow the trunk to wrap around objects.

To study how these wrinkles form, the team gathered two Asian and three African elephant fetuses in museum collections, along with dozens of published photographs or drawings of fetuses at different ages. By lining these up sequentially, the researchers were able to form a visual timeline of prenatal trunk development. Wrinkles, they found, begin to appear as soon as the trunk does—about 20 days into the elephant’s 22-month gestation. Over the next 150 days, the number of wrinkles increases exponentially in both species, doubling every 3 weeks, and concentrates around the pivot point. Asian elephants acquire even more wrinkles later on in development.

The scientists next looked at whether trunk use contributes to additional wrinkle formation, as they originally suspected. Elephants are either left- or right-trunked, meaning they consistently bend the appendage to one side to put food in that side of the mouth. Over time, the researchers found, this bending creates more wrinkles on one side than the other.

Schulz hopes the research will inform work on soft robots used in disaster response. These robots’ joints are controlled by moving hydrostatic pressure around, much like elephant trunks, and their flexible bodies allow them to sneak into small spaces.

Elephants are the ideal model for studying soft joints, Hutchinson says. Although other animals such as primates and elephant seals can inflate organs by pumping blood into them, none of them have the specialized joints and dexterity of elephant trunks. “Elephants are doing their own thing,” he says.
