AUBURN, Maine — "We moose tell you a tale (tail?) of a special rescue mission that took place this morning," Auburn police said in a Facebook post from Friday afternoon, May 31, 2024. Officials say a young moose got stuck between a tree and the edge of a residential garage on Josslyn Street overnight.

"At first, we thought this might be a wild moose chase, but it was very real," officials said.

A crew of moose wranglers with members from Auburn Police and Public Works, the Maine Warden Service and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife as well as a few helpful neighbors worked together to safely free the moose.

Staff from the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife were able to tranquilize the moose to keep him calm and allow them to work safely, according to officials.

Photos show them using a small electric saw to cut parts of the building away to make space for the moose. Once freed, it took most of the group to carry the moose into a Warden's truck.

Auburn police say that after the male moose is evaluated for any injuries requiring treatment, he will be either released or taken to the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray.
