Rob's Cleveland Trip #3: Avengers Movie Filming and Soldiers and Sailors Monument

In today's blog about my Cleveland, you'll learn about the Soldiers and Sailors Monument and Public Square where the Avengers Movie was filmed!

AVENGERS MOVIE FILMING -  WKYC-TV said "The day was Aug. 15, 2011. It was a calm, sunny day when something incredible happened at 4:02 p.m. Something truly unforgettable... Without much warning, flames erupted in a flurry of explosions along East 9th Street in the shadows of Progressive Field. Burning taxis and cars were tossed around like toys as people were running for their lives. It truly was a day like no other. A day the Avengers took over Northeast Ohio. We saw Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) battling Loki's army. We saw crowds surrounding Tower City in a scene that clearly depicts Cleveland on screen despite attempts to double it as New York.  Click for full story

SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MONUMENT - This monument, located in Public Square was also in the background during the filming of the Avengers film in 2011. My tour guide said it was actually in a scene supposedly shot in Germany (which is weird because it's about the American Civil War).

The Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is a major Civil War monument in Cleveland, Ohio, honoring the more than 9,000 individuals from Cuyahoga County who served the Union throughout the war. It was dedicated on July 4, 1894, and is located on the southeast quadrant of Public Square in Downtown Cleveland.

WHAT DO THE FIGURES ON THE MONUMENT REPRESENT? The column, topped with a statue of the Goddess of Freedom, defended by the Shield of Liberty, signifies the essence of the Nation for which Cuyahoga County veterans were willing to and did give their lives. Four bronze groupings on the esplanade depict, in battle scenes, the Navy, Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry.

WHO DESIGNED IT? Designed by LEVI T. SCOFIELD, the monument was dedicated on 4 July 1894 after nearly 15 years of planning. The initial drive to build a local monument began on 30 Oct. 1879, when a group of Civil War veterans met at CASE HALL in Cleveland to advocate such a project.
