If you are a fan of the Batman TV show from 1966 to 1968 as I am, you'll remember the special cameo appearances of celebrities when the dynamic duo did some batclimbs up the side of buildings.
You'll see Sammy Davis Junior, Bruce Lee, Art Linkletter, and the actor who played "Colonel Klink" in Hogan's Heroes (to mane a few) and so many more! - One of them was Suzy Knickberbocker, and I had to look her up. Aileen Mehle, known by the pen name Suzy or Suzy Knickerbocker,
was an American society columnist, active in journalism for over fifty
years. Her column was syndicated to 100 newspapers and read by over 30
million people

Frostbite and Hypothermia in People and Pets (and First Aid)
Given the Arctic air outbreak this week, here is some information for you about Frostbite and Hypothermia. These can also be experienced in pets. See info below and stay warm!
FROSTBITE OCCURS – Within 30
minutes during these Arctic Outbreak temperatures the Eastern and Central U.S.
is currently experiencing.
For example, A temperature of 0°F
and a wind speed of 15 mph creates a wind chill temperature of -19°F.
Under these conditions frost bite can occur in just 30 minutes.
... Extremely cold temperature can also cause hypothermia, when the
body's temperature dips below 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
WHAT DOES FROSTBITE DO? You have frostbite
when your body tissue freezes. The most susceptible parts of the body are
fingers, toes, ear lobes, or the tip of the nose. Symptoms include a loss of
feeling in the extremity and a white or pale appearance. Get medical attention
immediately for frostbite. The area should be SLOWLY rewarmed using warm, not
hot water.
WHAT IS HYPOTHERMIA?
- Hypothermia occurs when body temperature falls below 95°F. Determine your temperature with a thermometer.
- Warning signs include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness and exhaustion.
- Get medical attention immediately. If you can't get help quickly, begin warming the body SLOWLY. Warm the body core first, NOT the extremities. Warming extremities first drives the cold blood to the heart and can cause the body temperature to drop further--which may lead to heart failure.
- If you are helping someone else with hypothermia, get the person into dry clothing and wrap in a warm blanket. Be sure to cover the head and neck.
- Do not give the person alcohol, drugs, coffee, or any HOT beverage or food. WARM broth and food is better.
- About 20% of cold related deaths occur in the home. Young children under the age of two and the elderly (those more than 65 years old), are most susceptible to hypothermia.
- Hypothermia can set in over a period of time. Keep the thermostat above 69°F, wear warm clothing, eat food for warmth, and drink plenty of water or fluids other than alcohol and caffeine to keep hydrated.
- Avoid alcohol because it will LOWER your body temperature.
IN THE NEWS: President Trump can't stop U.S. coal plants from retiring
Here's another example of the snake oil salesman's campaign promise of "making coal great again."
Wondering how the people in coal country are feeling about this.
President Trump can't stop U.S. coal plants from retiring
Scott DiSavino
/Reuters/ January 14, 2019 /
(Reuters) - More U.S. coal-fired power plants were shut in President Donald Trump’s first two years than were retired in the whole of Barack Obama’s first term, despite the Republican’s efforts to prop up the industry to keep a campaign promise to coal-mining states.
In total, more than 23,400 megawatts (MW) of coal-fired generation were shut in 2017-2018 versus 14,900 MW in 2009-2012, according to data from Reuters and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Trump has tried to roll back rules on climate change and the environment adopted during the Obama administration to fulfill pledges to voters in states like West Virginia and Wyoming.
But the second highest year for coal shutdowns was in Trump’s second year, 2018, at around 14,500 megawatts, following a peak at about 17,700 megawatts in 2015 under Obama.
One megawatt can power about 1,000 U.S. homes.
The number of U.S. coal plants has continued to decline every year since coal capacity peaked at just over 317,400 MW in 2011, and is expected to keep falling as consumers demand power from cleaner and less expensive sources of energy.
Cheap natural gas and the rising use of renewable power like solar and wind have kept electric prices relatively low for years, making it uneconomic for generators to keep investing in older coal and nuclear plants.
Generators said they plan to shut around 8,422 MW of coal-fired power and 1,500 MW of nuclear in 2019, while adding 10,900 MW of wind, 8,200 MW of solar and 7,500 MW of gas, according to Reuters and EIA data.
The predictions come from estimates compiled by Thomson Reuters and U.S. Energy Information Administration data.

How to Stop dogs from Poop Eating
Franklin in basket muzzle |
3 TIMES A DAY YARD PICK UP - I pick up the backyard about 3 times a day, and even follow the dogs around to pick up after them. No matter how much you think you've picked every piece up, you always miss one and the little dogs find it. (Fortunately, Dolly, our Weimaraner, has never picked up that nasty habit - Only the 3 boys do it).
Dash in basket muzzle |
THE BASKET MUZZLE SOLUTION - Cloth muzzles don't work because I've tried them. If a dog wants to taste #2, their tongue can get out through the front of the open cloth muzzle. You need a basket muzzle. That's a plastic muzzle that looks like a woven basket. It allows them to sniff it, but they soon realize they can't get at it.
ONE BAD TRIAL RUN - Of course, there's always one who is persistent and determined to get what they want. That was our 14 year old Dachshund, Franklin. During one of the first times we put the basket muzzle on him, he went right behind our Weimaraner, and tried to get her business. He came back to the door with a muzzle full of Dolly's #2 smashed in it like play-doh! He didn't do it again.
Tyler poses in his basket muzzle |
NOTE - If I forget to put the muzzle on them, and they do eat #2, I wipe their mouths and teeth with a paper towel, spray doggy breath spray and brush their teeth.

Ever Stop Reading a Book" Here are 4 Books I Gave Up On (2 award winners)
How many books have you started reading and just gave up on? There have been a few for me. In today's blog, you'll read about 4 books - 2 novels, and 2 graphic novels - that were just not my taste. I give a book (I like murder mysteries) about 20 to even 50 pages before stopping. Here are some of them that just turned me off...
Ironically, I've had to stop reading some award winning books, most recently Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. A friend lent me the book, and although it won awards, I couldn't get through it. The writing style was like a movie script, addressing names of characters that were not introduced, and had one or two sentences injected often throughout a chapter. I didn't know who they were and couldn't follow it, so stopped reading 30 pages into the book. I'm sure it was good, but not for me!
Another novel I couldn't get through was called The House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III. It was 7 years ago when I attempted to read it, and it, too, was an award winner. I don't remember why I didn't like it, but it stuck with me.
As an avid comic book reader and superhero fan since the 1970s, there have only been a few comics or graphic novels that I didn't like so much that I couldn't read them. Recently, I found two in a bargain bin and now know why they were in there. I couldn't get through them.
The first was about a superhero character I like! Hellboy. In enjoyed the first 2 movies of the character over a decade ago, but this graphic novel: Hellboy: Darkness Calls was awful. The story was disjointed, the characters were dead things that were undefined, I didn't care for the artwork (although the artist is the storyteller and has had critical acclaim) and after 20 pages I gave up!
The second was the comic book character Lucifer, on which the former Fox TV series was based - Lucifer, the fallen angel comes to Earth for a vacation . The TV series is much, much, much better than the comic series and nothing like it. The comic series gets into really weird realities that I couldn't follow. This graphic novel is called "Lucifer: Crux."
Of course, we all have different tastes, but I couldn't get through these 4 books. - Rob

What
happens when a medium goes on vacation? Can a medium simply switch off
their ability at will? Well…not exactly. Rob Gutro is a
medium/author/paranormal investigator and a scientist who has written 4
books about his encounters with human and animal ghosts and spirits. In
this book, you will read about his experiences on two separate trips to
the United Kingdom. England’s rich history and many epic battles have
caused an over-abundance of residual emotional energy. Everywhere he
traveled, he had a paranormal experience. He explored royal palaces and
spent the night in haunted castles. He encountered the ghosts of
historical figures including a queen, a prince, and a nobleman; and
several ghosts even shared their pain of death experience with him. On
one occasion, the doppelganger of a loved one provided directions when
he became lost while driving in the countryside due to a malfunctioning
GPS. But not all of his encounters were of the human variety: there was
also a very special visit from a canine ghost. This book is intended to
be more than just a collection of personal ghost stories. In addition to
relating my ghostly encounters, he has also included a short narrative
history of the places where the experiences occurred. After all, knowing
the history of a place is key to understanding why a ghost has decided
to stay behind. So, join Rob as he relates his encounters with the
ghosts of England. Rob has written 4 other books about the paranormal,
two about people (Ghosts and Spirits and Lessons Learned From Talking to
the Dead) and 2 about pets (Pets and the Afterlife and Pets and the
Afterlife 2). The books are available in paperback and e-book on
Amazon.com.
'Hellboy' Trailer Officially Released Online!
As a superhero fan, I often look forward to movies about them, and coming later in 2019 is the superhero reboot of "Hellboy." I'm unsure of how I feel about the reboot, since I really liked the original (although I didn't care much for Hellboy II). What do you think of the reboot trailer? Below is an article from Comicbook.com that cites fans' reactions:The Internet Is Split Over 'Hellboy's First Trailer.
See what you think: https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk
Hellboy is planning his big comeback, and it seems the Dark Horse
icon is ready to show fans what he’s got. Lionsgate just released its
official first trailer for Hellboy after an accidental leak, and the Internet has got lots to say about the teaser.
However, as you can see in the slides below, reactions to the reboot aren’t what fans would consider glowing.
The trailer gives fans their first-look at David Harbour in action as Hellboy. The gritty trailer promises this on-screen iteration of the comic book series will be a dark one, and its R-rating is only bolstering that idea. Not only does Hellboy’s first trailer have enough gore to make Deadpool excited plus its sharp humor and dry sarcasm are more than edgy enough.
While this aesthetic does sit well with some fans, there are other Hellboy lovers who feel shafted by this offbeat take. Hellboy will mark the next phase for the titular hero, but the film will not be part of the franchise director Guillermo del Toro set up years ago. With Ron Perlman as the lead, Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army have become cult hits with comic book fans. The decision to reboot the character entirely without del Toro soured plenty of fans to Hellboy’s new solo outing, and those people are making their dissatisfaction known online.

What is it with conservative judges who think it is okay to blame women for being raped? The

My Brand New Phone - A 1 in a Million: DEFECTIVE
My new phone, just 27 days old, decided to stop allowing me to make calls on the cellular network and only use Wi-fi connections. SIGH. Before this phone, my previous "new phone" was a manufacturer defect, too.
My friend Bill S. has always said to me, "the person who gives, helps or cares about others will always be the one to get screwed first." Well, that describes what phones do with me.
BLUETOOTH GONE BAD - The last time I bought a phone in late 2017 it was an LG android. After about 9 months the bluetooth stopped working. It would never connect with the bluetooth in the truck, so I couldn't talk while in the vehicle. I brought it to T-Mobile and they said it was a manufacturers defect, and there was no way to repair the Bluetooth software (I even checked on line and confirmed it). It was just the "Luck of the draw" that I got a defective phone.
NEW PHONE 27 DAYS AGO - I endured that for about 7 months until Dec. 28th, 2018. That's when I finally had enough and Tom and I went to T-Mobile and bought new phones. During the data transfer I should have realized the phone they were giving me was defective. It took 3 times to transfer data to my phone, because the connection kept severing. Tom's phone, which had 80% more pictures, was done transferring data in 30 minutes. Mine took 2 hours, and still didn't get everything.
NO LONGER ABLE TO USE CELL SIGNALS - Yesterday, Friday, January 25, the cell phone service wouldn't work. It had become spotty over the week and the phone would only work whenever it was connected to a Wi-Fi. That means - ONLY working in the House. Today, the phone even dropped wi-fi signals in the house. I was LIVID. I just spent $450 on this phone 27 days ago!!!
T-MOBILE- Yes, I have insurance on the phone and T-Mobile said the insurance allows a swap with a refurbished phone (not a new one). However, since this phone has only been out for 1 month, there may not be refurbished phones. In fact, the really nice clerk named Rachel in Gambrills, MD tested the phone every which way possible, and stayed 30 mins after the store closed (I didn't know and felt guilty). She said there has never been a return on my phone for defect. I just got "ONE IN A MILLION." - DEFECTIVE.
REPLACEMENT PHONE- The replacement phone should take 2 days, so people have to call Tom (whom, btw, doesn't turn on his ringer), or HOPE that I'm home on Wi-fi. I called Customer service when I got home, a woman in customer service (I wish I wrote her name down, she was great) said the phone will take the 2 days to arrive. She apologized profusely, but I told her I know it wasn't T-Mobile's fault. It's the Manufacturer's fault!- and my bad luck for getting the 1 in a million defect. T-Mobile was nice enough to not only call for a new phone, but also credit me for my monthly bill. THAT'S GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. The clerk in the store and the woman on the help line both were extremely patient and helpful.
That's usually my experience with T-Mobile, and why I've been with them over 17 years. .

A fun Movie! Dumplin' on Netflix
Anyone that knows me (Rob), knows that I'm a huge fan of Dolly Parton, and her music and more are in the fun movie DUMPLIN' on Netflix (based on a book). It also features lots of Dolly's music (mostly classics redone in collaborations) in a new soundtrack. Tom and I both really enjoyed this movie!!! SEE IT on NETFLIX!
ABOUT THE MOVIE- Directed by Anne Fletcher, DUMPLIN’ follows an outspoken plus-sized teenage girl named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald), who’s known as Will to her friends and Dumplin’ to her mother (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen who now runs the local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant. In her small Texas town, Will confidently ignores comments about her weight and listens to Dolly Parton songs obsessively. But when she decides to enter her mother’s pageant in protest, her bold move encourages other contestants to follow in her footsteps, redefining the town’s traditions in the process.
WHY DOLLY IS MY FAVORITE - Dolly is my favorite entertainer/singer/songwriter. As I said recently, she changed my life- because I learned my optimism from her. She was and has always been a tremendous influence on my life to help others, appreciate the simple pleasures and little things, smile at others and be positive.- Yes, our dog Dolly is named after Dolly Parton.

A Look at the New Burial Place of England's King Richard III
Back in Sept. 2012, the body of England's King Richard III was discovered when excavators foundhis remains under a parking lot within the site of the former Greyfriars Friary Church in Leicester, England (It's 101 miles northwest of London). We blogged about that in 2012, and in today's blog we'll tell you where his remains wound up!
Richard III Tomb and Burial
In March 2015, thousands lined the streets in Leicester, England to watch the ceremony and procession leading to the reburial of King Richard III. His body was taken from Fenn Lane Farm all the way through to Leicester Cathedral.
Here's the summary from the website of Leicester Cathedral.
King Richard III’s tomb has been designed by the architects van Heningen and Haward, who are the architects commissioned for the reordering of the Cathedral as a more effective place of worship and mission.
Location
The tomb sits within an ambulatory (a walking space) between the newly created Chapel of Christ the King at the east end of the Cathedral and the sanctuary (the most holy place, signified by the main altar) under the tower. This is a place of similar significance to the chancel where the Grey Friars buried King Richard in their church.
This is a peaceful space for people to visit and reflect. The location is discretely shielded from the main worship area by the relocated Nicholson screen. The Cathedral’s primary role as the seat of the Bishop and a centre of mission and worship will be enhanced by this change.
The tomb is designed to help visitors reflect on key Christian themes as well as the story of a particular English king.
The starting point for the design of the tomb was the light breaking through the entrance to the tomb of Jesus – an image of Easter morning and the resurrection. The deep cut in the stone will allow light to flood through it, symbolising that death is not the end, but that we all receive new life in Christ.
The stone is broadly the shape and size of a sarcophagus, so it takes up the volume of a human being. It is tilted slightly, as if rising to meet the risen Jesus. For centuries Christians have been buried with their feet in the east and heads in the west, ready to stand and face Jesus when he returns – usually assumed to rise again in the east just as the sun rises in the east each morning.
The cut is cross shaped, to show that this new life was won through the death of Jesus, a Christian belief which would have been fundamental to King Richard himself (John Ashdown-Hill, in his book ‘The last days of King Richard III’ describes the crucifix found on the field at Bosworth and imagines Richard taking the sacrament of the body and blood of Jesus before battle began.)[1]
Materials
The stone chosen is a Swaledale fossil stone, quarried in North Yorkshire. It was chosen not only because it will polish to a fine finish, but also because the fossils within it are long dead creatures immortalised now in stone.
The darker Kilkenny marble plinth frames the tomb and provides a beautiful surface for letter cutting – the cut surfaces will appear white – which ensures that the details of Richard’s name, dates and motto can be clearly read.
King Richard’s importance and characteristics are recognised in the inlaid stone coat of arms (pietra dura) which is made in a variety of marble and semi-precious stones.
Burial
In considering the method of reinterment, the cathedral took into account the views of the scientific community, the heritage groups, the Richard III Society and the Church of England.
Richard’s remains are laid in a lead ossuary which is itself placed in a coffin made from English oak. The coffin is then placed in a brick lined vault below the floor of the Cathedral, before the tomb stone seals it closed.
More information about the thinking behind the design can be found at the King Richard III in Leicester website.

In the News: Trucker saves dogs thrown from vehicle on New York highway
Here's a story from New York news that makes you wonder how people can be so cruel and sick, while others are so loving and caring. I don't know if the SOB that tried to kill these 2 dogs was found, but I'm grateful to the Truck driver who immediately rescued them and the State Troopers who quickly helped. Here's the story and a video report.

NEW YORK (AP) — A pair of beagle mixes are on the mend after authorities say someone threw them out of a moving vehicle on a snowy New York highway. The dogs were rescued by a passing trucker, but one was so badly mangled that a front leg had to be amputated. New York State Police on Saturday asked for the public’s help in finding the suspect or suspects in the incident Wednesday morning on Interstate 81 near Whitney Point, about 16 miles (26 kilometers) north of Binghamton. So far, they said, they have no leads.
“These animals have been through a lot, and people need to understand that this is not OK,” said Amberly Ondria, shelter manager for the Broome County Humane Society. “This is not something that should be done.”

POSTING FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY WHERE THE DOGS WERE TAKEN: While the investigation is open I'll just leave this here: “There are options for people who no longer want to keep their pets. Take them to a shelter, call your neighbors, take them to a police station, take them to a fire station. Don’t dump them just reach out to some agency that can assist you in finding the right resources to place animals in a safe environment." - Karen Matson, Exec. Director The Broome County Humane Society.

When it's Time to Get New Windows - Like We Just Did!
Thermal windows are the best to get for your home. They are double or triple panes of glass. that are filled with a gas that acts as an insulator. When that gas has
escaped, however, or dissipated, the window fogs up and no longer offers
the thermal protection - then the cold air from outside radiates
through the glass into the house.
IT HAPPENED TO US - The windows fogged up. That's exactly what happened to the 4 windows in the front of out house in November (always at the start of the winter). So, we ordered and paid for 4 new windows in November, and they finally came in and were installed in early January when it was of course, 25 degrees Fahrenheit outside....
ABOUT THERMAL WINDOWS - Insulated double- and triple-pane windows, officially known as IGUs
(insulated glass units) offer far better energy-efficiency that
single-pane glass. Such windows are also commonly called thermal windows.
Whether it is just a simple sealed glass "sandwich" of two glass panes,
or a more sophisticated IGU with coatings and inert gas filling the
space between panes, these windows can easily double the
energy-efficiency of the window.
BEST GAS IN THERMAL WINDOWS - Fill the space between panes of glass in the IGU with a heavy, inert gas such as argon or krypton. (Not from Superman's homeworld, I might add)

HOW THE GASES INSULATE - In these dense gases, the molecules move very
much slower under the impact of thermal energy, which means windows with
IGUs filled with such a gas will create a much better barrier against
heat loss. For this reason, nearly all insulated thermal windows now use
one of the inert gases to fill the space between panes.

Shocking Idiot of the Week: A Murderous, Mentally Ill Supporter of D.T.
Parkland School murderer: Trump Supporter |
Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz
was obsessed with guns — and to the chagrin of his mother, also appeared to be
a fan of President Donald Trump. So when his mother, “a liberal anti-gun type,”
died in 2017, Cruz used his own “Trump hat” to get a twisted final word on
their political differences, a friend told police.

He is facing the death
penalty for Florida’s deadliest school shooting, an incident that sparked a
wave of student activism and even led to the passage of a gun-control law in
Florida.
