A Cautionary Tale about Traveling out of the U.S. - New Hampshire resident unable to return from Canada

Since January 2025, traveling out of the U.S. seems risky. For one man who has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada, and lives in New Hampshire, after visiting Canada, the U.S. Border Patrol won't let him return home. All because of 2 misdemeanors from 2007, for which he already made amends. 

  Earlier this year, a student from the Netherlands studying in the U.S. was blocked from returning because of his anti-trump social media posts. Although a U.S. citizen cannot be denied entry into the United States even if their social media posts raise concerns with border officials,  the Border Patrol can confiscate your phone or computer and delay your return.  Today's blog is a story about the NH Resident who remains stuck in Canada.

New Hampshire resident unable to return from Canada after being stopped at Maine border

MANCHESTER, N.H. — A man who has lived in the United States since he was 3 and raised a family in New Hampshire has found himself blocked from returning home from Canada.

Speaking exclusively to WMTW sister station WMUR, Chris Landry said he was held for questioning and sent back to Canada on Sunday, apparently because of several misdemeanor offenses from about 20 years ago.

"I never expected that I wouldn't be able to go back home," Landry said.

Landry, 46, said he took a trip to Canada like he has done for the past 40 years. But this time, he couldn't come back home to New Hampshire. "It was scary," he said. "I felt like I was being treated like a criminal."

The legal U.S. resident who is a Canadian national said he was denied entry at the border in Maine this weekend. He said he was held for three hours with two of his five children and turned back to Canada over old misdemeanor offenses tied to marijuana and a suspended license from 2004 and 2007.

"It's really a living nightmare is what it is," Landry told WMUR.

Court documents show Landry was convicted of the drug-related offenses and received two 60-day jail sentences that were suspended. "I went to court, paid my fines and never got in trouble again since 2007," he said.

Landry has reached out to members of the state's congressional delegation for help. "We will check in with our offices, and there is a standard protocol we go through to try to see if there are ways we can be of assistance," said U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-New Hampshire.

Landry's family in Peterborough is connecting with him virtually as they wait for answers. "We need him here," said Landry's partner, Jessica Bekier. "I need him here. He's my support."

Landry said he's not giving up and is determined to hug his family again in the Granite State. "But one way or another, we're going to get through it one way or another," he said. "We're going to be together again."

WMUR-TV, Manchester, NH contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection for comment on Tuesday. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson released the following statement about the matter on Wednesday morning. Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right, and under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke a green card if our laws are broken and abused. Lawful Permanent Residents presenting at a U.S. port of entry with previous criminal convictions may be subject to mandatory detention and/or may be asked to provide additional documentation to be set up for an immigration hearing."

DISCOVERY: A Large Planet Around a small Red Sun

Ginormous planet discovered around tiny red star challenges our understanding of solar systems

Scientists have discovered a giant planet called TOI-6894b, orbiting a star that should be far too small to have formed it. The discovery could further challenge theories of planet formation.

Scientists have spotted a massive planet where one shouldn't be able to exist, according to leading theories of planet formation.

A team of researchers discovered a giant planet, dubbed TOI-6894b, orbiting a low-mass red dwarf star about 241 light-years away from Earth. The findings, published June 4 in the journal Nature Astronomy, add another example to a growing list of space objects that challenge standard models of planet formation.

"It's an intriguing discovery," study co-author Vincent Van Eylen, an astrophysicist at University College London's Mullard Space Science Laboratory, said in a statement. "We don't really understand how a star with so little mass can form such a massive planet! This is one of the goals of the search for more exoplanets."

'We had less than a 2% chance to find this': James Webb telescope uncovers baffling 'Big Wheel', one of the most massive galaxies in the early universe

For years, astronomers thought low-mass stars, less than roughly a third the mass of our sun, would not be able to accumulate enough material to form giant planets. But a few examples that defy these predictions have cropped up, and scientists are looking for others to help revise theories of planet formation.

To seek out these planets, study co-author Edward Bryant, an astronomer at University College London, and colleagues turned to the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a NASA satellite launched in 2018. In a 2023 study, Bryant and colleagues spotted 15 potential giant planets, including TOI-6894b, orbiting low-mass stars. The team homed in on TOI-6894b and its star with additional observations from TESS and several ground-based telescopes.

Combining this data, the researchers found that TOI-6894b has about 17% as much mass as Jupiter, or about 53 times as much mass as Earth. The planet's radius is slightly larger than Saturn's, and it orbits its star — which contains about 20% as much mass as the sun — in just 3 days.

A Short, Fun Visit from Old Friends!

There's nothing like a visit from old friends. Mary Margaret and Don planned a "Northeastern U.S. tour" and we were so thrilled to be part of it!  That's today's blog.

SIX YEARS AGO - Back in May 2019, we took a Viking RIver cruise on the Danube and that's where we met Mary Margaret and Don. They're both retired, super-fit, fun, and we have so much in common frrom politics and social issues to gardening (Mary Margaret is an avid gardener), working out and music (Don is an amazing pianist and works out). 

    We met on the Viking Cruise and spent several off-boat excursions together- like tourng in Vienna, Austria. We bonded immediately and always stayed in touch.  Friends are such a gift.

THE PLAN! - Mary Margaret is the ultimate planner. She planned out a northeast trip 60 days out, and Portland, Maine was the northern point and last stop. Previously she and Don visited Connecticut and New York City. 

THE MAINE CONNECTION - They met an old friend in Kennebunk, and stayed at a hotel there, and the next day, we picked them up and drove to downtown Portland, ME where we enjoyed a nice lunch at Rosies, and a walk around the Old Port stores. It was a wonderful afternoon visit. 

We promised them we would schedule a trip to see them in Georgia, but it would not be in the summertime! :)  They absolutely made our week! 

A FUNNY TEE SHIRT- In one of the stores we went in, there were a lot of tee shirts. One of them in particular we found funny, because Tom and I say that we don't want people to move to Maine - and keep it peaceful. The Tee shirt said "Maine Sucks, Tell Your Friends."  So if you're thinking about moving here, think again. LOL

Idiots of the Week: Fireworks: Large Illegal Display CA fatality, MD Teen Injured, House Fire, Garage Fire, Boat Explosion

This week's idiots are about people who use illegal fireworks that resulted in injuries, property damage and 2 deaths. There was a large Illegal display in California killed a child. There was a fatality from 2 men in boats lighting fireworks, there was a Maryland teen injured and a costly garage fire.  There's a reason why something is not legal. Sadly, some paid the ultimate price because of the idiots that didn't respect that. Be smart.

1)  California Homeowner's Large Fireworks Display Kills Girl 

    An 8-year-old girl has died after suffering critical injuries due to a fireworks-related explosion in Buena Park, California, the city’s police department said in a statement on Saturday, July 5th. Officers were patrolling the area of Cornflower Circle on the Fourth of July at around 9:45 p.m. where they saw a “large quantity of fireworks detonate in this area.” A homeowner placed a large illegal fireworks display in the street when it began misfiring toward the home. The fireworks caused other illegal fireworks to ignite near the area where the child and other people were present. The homeowner was arrested, and charges are pending upon review from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the statement said.The child suffered critical injuries due to a fireworks-related explosion and was taken to the University of California, Irvine hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

2) Fireworks Spark Catastrophic Hand Injury

A 14-year-old Prince George's County, Maryland teen boy was using fireworks when he suffered a "catastrophic hand injury" the night of July 4. He was taken to a local hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Investigators confirmed the fireworks involved were not legally permitted in Maryland and the injuries are expected to result in permanent damage.

"This is exactly why fireworks should never be in children's hands, especially when illegal and unregulated," said Maryland Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray.  

3) Massive Garage Fire in Maryland  

Over the holiday weekend, improperly discarded fireworks caused a fire in Wicomico County, Maryland ignited a garage and causing approximately $3,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.

4) Fireworks explosion on boat in Upstate NY kills one, injures another

Hancock, N.Y. — One man was killed and another was injured in a fireworks explosion on a boat in Delaware County Friday. Two men were on a pontoon boat setting off fireworks on Somerset Lake on the Fourth of July, according to State Police Monday. Around 9:40 p.m., multiple fireworks ignited at the same time, causing an explosion on the boat on Ridge Runner Road in Hancock, troopers said. Troopers found one man with non-life-threatening injuries and another man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

4) Tree and home Catch Fire in Neighborhood from Fireworks 

Folsom, California-  Firefighters from the Folsom, California Fire Department responded to a tree fire at a residential home on Kerr Court in Folsom around 9:05 p.m. The flames threatened three homes and spread to a fence and an outbuilding. According to FFD, the fire grew quickly under strong winds and had already began to burn one home by the time crews arrived. The flames destroyed a wood fence and an outbuilding. It also caused minor damage to one home. However, firefighters determined the home was still safe to occupy. Firefighters said they contained the fire in 12 minutes and suspect it was caused by fireworks.

Heroes of the Week: MIT Scientists: high-tech 'bubble wrap' turns air into safe drinking water — even in Death Valley

 This week's heroes are scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They've created something to help create safe drinking water, even in desert areas! Although the yield of water from the atmosphere isn't much in dry areas, it's a start. (Side note: the current Administration SLASHED science funding drastically)  Here's the story about this amazing innovation.

MIT's high-tech 'bubble wrap' turns air into safe drinking water — even in Death Valley

Researchers at MIT have tested a new technology for turning water vapor in the atmosphere into drinkable water, even in extreme environments.

MIT researchers have created a high-tech "bubble wrap" capable of collecting safe drinking water directly from the air — even in Death Valley, the driest desert in North America.

The new water harvester is a major step towards providing safe, accessible drinking water to people across the globe — and works wherever you may find water vapor in the air, scientists said in a new study published June 11 in the journal Nature Water.

The water harvester is made from hydrogel (a highly water-absorbent material) that is enclosed between two layers of glass — much like a window. At night, the device absorbs water vapor from the atmosphere. During the day, the water condenses on the glass thanks to a coating that keeps the glass cool. The liquid water then drips down the glass and is collected in a system of tubes.

The hydrogel is formed into a special shape, a series of domes resembling a sheet of bubble wrap that swells up when absorbing water vapor. The domes increase the material’s surface area, which increases the amount of water it can hold.

Researchers tested the new device for a week in Death Valley, a unique desert valley spanning across parts of California and Nevada. It’s the hottest place in the world and the driest place in North America.

It produced about a quarter to two-thirds of a cup of water every day (57-161.5 milliliters). In more humid areas, the device should produce even more water. This design is a lot more effective than some previous attempts to collect drinking water from air, all without needing electricity to power it, MIT representatives said in a statement.

Book of the Week: Dog Days by John Leavitt

Every now and then I read fantasy books with magical characters, so I tried the first in the series by John Leavitt, called "Dog Days." The book appealed to me because it was about a kind of entry-level magic practitioner with a mystical dog.

MY THOUGHTS - The book was good, and the main character, Mason was likeable as he dealt with weird things, like man eating sidewalk worms, and other things. He works with elder magic wielders to help solve a mystery of who and why other magic wielder's mystical animal sidekicks are being stolen or never return. Some cases lead to the deaths of the magic wielders, too... but in the beginning that's a little hard to figure. When you get more than half way, you learn what's really going on. The end battle between Mason and the villain was a bit odd, too, as I couldn't figure if it was a mental thing or in another dimension... but overall I enjoyed the book as a 4 of 5 stars. I'm sure the 2nd in the series will make sense sooner!

On July 9, 1868, the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, granting citizenship and “equal protection under the laws” to anyone “born or naturalized in the United States,” including formerly enslaved people. Ironically, this is what the current Administration is trying to invalidate.

A man held in a sneeze — and it punctured his windpipe

The patient: A man in his 30s in the U.K.

The symptoms: The patient arrived at the emergency department in severe pain and with a swollen neck that he struggled to move. He reported that the pain had erupted immediately after he'd stifled a sneeze by pinching his nose and closing his mouth at the same time. He was driving and contending with hay fever symptoms when he stifled the sneeze.

Although the man didn't have any trouble breathing, swallowing or talking, his doctors noticed a faint crackling sound during an initial examination of his neck.

What happened next: When the doctors took an X-ray to investigate further, they found signs of surgical emphysema, a condition in which air gets trapped under the deepest tissue layers below the skin.

The diagnosis: A CT scan then showed that a tear had formed between the third and fourth bones in the patient's neck, which enabled air to escape from his windpipe, or trachea, and into tissues of the neck and the space between the lungs. The hole in his trachea measured 0.08 by 0.08 inches (2 by 2 millimeters).

The doctors concluded that the tear likely formed due to a "rapid build-up of pressure in the trachea while sneezing with a pinched nose and closed mouth," according to a report of the case.

The treatment: The patient's medical providers determined that he didn't need surgery to repair the tear. Instead, they monitored him in the hospital for two days, carefully watching his oxygen levels and other vital signs and not providing food by mouth for the first day. He was then discharged with prescriptions for pain-relief and hay fever medications, as well as doctor's orders to avoid strenuous activity for two weeks.

At a checkup five weeks later, a CT scan of the man's neck showed that the tear had completely healed.

What makes the case unique: Spontaneous windpipe tears aren't widely reported in the medical literature, with only a few cases documented prior to this case. Those tears resulted primarily from physical trauma to the windpipe or from complications following medical procedures, such as thyroid removal or the insertion of a tube into the windpipe or esophagus.

Prior to the man's case, there had been no reports of a trachea tearing due to stifled sneezing, his doctors reported. Estimates suggest that, when the mouth and nose are closed during a sneeze, the pressure in the upper airways may be more than 20 times the pressure during your average "achoo."

"Everyone should be advised not to stifle sneezes by pinching the nose while keeping the mouth closed as it can result in tracheal perforation," the doctors cautioned in their report.

Reading Confirmations: A Spirit Cat's Number & Cats who greeted him in spirit

In a pet spirit reading I did for 2 cat parents, two things really stood out to them that really surprised them. One was that their male cat in spirit identified three specific cats who passed previously that greeted him on the other side. The other surprise was their spirit cat's Angel number that mysteriously appeared. Today's blog is about that experience (thanks to the mom for allowing me to share it).

My reading:

He tells me that he was greeted in spirit by 4 or 5 other cats. One cat had a white stripe in the middle of his/her face and it looks like areas of light gray around the eyes. Another one is a tiger-striped cat. There's a third cat that's entirely black with just a little patch of white. I can't tell what the other cats look like because they're standing back in shadow.

Now he's telling me about the number 5. That number is his Angel number. That's a number assigned from spirit to let us know they are around. Whenever you see the number repeating, like 55 or 555, that's a sign he is present. 

The Cat Parents' response:

This is making me get tears in my eyes. I read the answers and there are definitely some things that stand out.

The Cats He Met in Spirit:

The other cats he met on the other side, one was a tiger stripe, she was 21 years old and had to be put down, she was in kidney failure, she had a long life with us.

The white stripe on the nose, I have only had one cat with a stripe like that, my very first cat, I was 11 years old, he was gray and white, he had a gray face and a half stripe up his nose/face.

The black with a touch of white might be one that I actually saw on the side of the road, it had been hit by a car. We drove him up to the veterinary school in Raleigh because he was so badly injured, but his pelvis was broken on both sides and they could not save him. They were so moved that we brought this poor guy up there, they sent us a pawprint from him.

The Number 5:

5, I'm not sure but I think he may have been born in May, I was not sure how old he was when I brought him in, he was around 6 months old.

The NEXT DAY, the Mom sent me a follow up email about the number 5:

It's gotten crazy. Just for the heck of it I asked my husband if he has seen a lot of the number 5 lately. He has been working on an old, 1970s pinball machine since last fall. He made headway tonight, when I asked him about 5 he said that when he was playing the machine and testing it the number 5 stayed lit under the "Ball Number" sign. 

He said until tonight he didn't even know it had a 5 on it, because when it is not lit, you can't see or read anything behind the backboard. We only thought it went to 4. So tonight was very strange!

The Second day after the email, the mom wrote:

My husband has been working on that pinball machine every night and the 5 lights up for a second, but it only stayed lit that one night, the day you sent me the email about looking for 5's!

Rob's Mom's Musical Sign Took a Lot of Coordination

 Spirits will give us musical signs to let us know they are around. Back on June 19th, I wrote about how my parents managed to make me turn on a radio to hear their anniversary song in the week of their anniversary. But my mom had to work extra hard to ensure I got her message on her birthday, too.

In May of 2025, Tom bought tickets for us to go see a cover band at a theatre in a nearby town. I wrote it down on the calendar, not thinking about the date.

When the date came, it was June 19, 2025. It was not only my parents' wedding anniversary (for which I already received a sign from them), but it was also my Mom's birthday (she passed in 2013).

The band was a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. Once we were in the theatre and we began enjoying some of the songs, it suddenly hit me that my mom in spirit arranged to influence Tom to buy the tickets for THAT particular performance (they were also playing the following 2 nights, but he "chose" the 19th).

Why? Because one of my mom's favorite songs is Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere" which they played. I sat there just awestruck.
