Part 2: Belair Stable Museum: Stables, Carriages and Nashua

Yesterday we introduced you to the Belair Stable Museum, where 2 triple crown winning horses were raised. Today we'll take you through the stables and introduce you to the third award-winning horse from the Belair Stables and show you the carriage room.

There's also a library room, filled with thousands of books about horses, old photos, a family history of the horses and their lineage there, and a trophy from the nearby (defunct) Bowie Rack Track where some of the horses trained.

THE CARRIAGE ROOM'S DOG CARRIAGE - There are two small horse-drawn carriages in this room and one is called a "Dog Cart." It was used in fox hunting and pulled by a "cart pony. That's the carriage behind us in the photo, and underneath the seat where the people are located is a small space for a hunting dog!  The other vehicle in the room is actually a winter-time carriage that they call a "one horse open sleigh."

THE STABLES - The museum has a central welcoming area, and on each side is a line of stables. They were originally made from wood, but in 1907 when William Woodward and his uncle James Woodward bought the property, they rebuilt the stables in brick.

EACH HORSE STALL -  Each stall was a space for 1 horse. The horse would eat, sleep and use it for bathroom doings. Large bales of straw were put on the bottom of the stalls for comfort (horses don't eat straw). It was also up to the grooms (we told you about them in yesterday's blog) to keep the stalls clean.Mounted on the wall were wooden slats that held grass and hay for the horses to eat, and each stall had a water trough.

CLEANING ROOM - Tom and Joe stopped for a picture in the "cleaning room" located in the stable, where workers would clean saddles and other equipment. The room also had a stove  in it.
 MEET "NASHUA" THE AWARD WINNING HORSE-  Although not a triple crown winner,  in 1955, Belair’s Nashua was Horse of the Year.  Nashua, once the leading thoroughbred money-winner, earned more than $1.1 million in three years of racing in the mid-1950's. He lost the 1955 Kentucky Derby to Swaps but went on to win the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, the second and third races of the Triple Crown series for 3-year-olds.

      His Derby loss to Swaps prompted the famous match race later that summer at Washington Park in Chicago. Nashua won that race by 6 1/2 lengths, although it was later learned that Swaps's feet had become inflamed the day before. Nevertheless Nashua was voted horse of the year in 1955.

Did you know that Bowie, Maryland holds the title of one of two places in the U.S. with a stable that brought up two Triple Crown winning horses and another award winning horse!  In this blog we'll explore the "Belair Stable Museum" which is the former home to the stables where those horses lived, and you'll learn about them. We explored it last weekend with our friends Joe and Tom and will walk you through it here and you'll learn about a Groom,  Tack Room, and see a "Lawn Jockey" that Rob remembers from his childhood.

THE BELAIR STABLE MUSEUM HISTORY
The Stable, built in 1907 by William Woodward, was part of the 20th century’s famous “Belair Stud Stable,” one of the country’s premier stables from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. Belair was home to Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935) – the only father/son horses to capture Thoroughbred racing’s famous Triple Crown Series. In 1955, Belair’s Nashua, an incomparable champion, was Horse of the Year. Other champions, including Johnstown, Fighting Fox, and Vagrancy also called Belair home.

 WHO WAS GALLANT FOX? Gallant Fox (March 23, 1927 – November 13, 1954) was a United States Thoroughbred horseracing champion. In a racing career which lasted from 1929 to 1930, he ran seventeen times and won eleven races. As a three-year-old in 1930, he won nine of his ten races and became the second horse to win the U.S. Triple Crown.

WHO WAS OMAHA? Omaha was a United States Thoroughbred horse racing champion. In a racing career which lasted from 1934 through 1936, he ran twenty-two times and won nine races. He had his greatest success as a three-year-old in 1935, when he won the Triple Crown.

WHAT IS A GROOM? -  Grooms are generally responsible for tasks such as mucking out stalls, feed preparation and distribution, cleaning and refilling water containers, grooming and bathing, cleaning tack, bandaging legs, tacking up, and administering basic first aid for cuts and scrapes. Grooms with riding skills may warm up or cool out a horse for its rider. Grooms also hold horses for treatment by the farrier and veterinarian, assist with preparations for shipping horses to shows or races, and operate various pieces of farm equipment.

You May Not Know: Facts Behind the Government Shutdown and DACA

This federal government shutdown affects everyone, whether you know it or not, and Congress has one main job- to keep the government operational and funded. They have failed. What you may NOT know is why the minority party (the Democrats) said they wanted to ensure that the DACA kids were safe when this funding was passed. It's important.
   We'll explain what is DACA, What happened to it, and WHY it's important to keep these kids safe, and you'll learn that the Democrats request for a clean DACA bill, after the President said "Yes" in a televised meeting, was killed, and the White House now says "DACA is not a priority."- It was all a fake promise by the GOP.

WHAT IS DACA? The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was an American immigration policy that allowed some individuals who entered the country as minors, and had either entered or remained in the country illegally, to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and to be eligible for a work visa

WHAT HAPPENED TO DACA?  Months ago, President Trump eliminated the DACA protection that President Obama had put forth in an Executive Order. That gave Congress until March 1 to come up with a bill to deal with 800,000 kids/teens that were born in the U.S. from illegal immigrants (now we agree that people should come legally to the U.S., but these kids didn't ask to be born into this situation).  Trump said Congress must pass legislation to address DACA (which they SHOULD, but they won't because they are a Republican led Congress).

THINK OF DACA THIS WAY -  800,000 kids born in the U.S. and only speak English and know only how to live as an American -now to be sent back to a country they've never been to, and DON"T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE. How would you feel if that happened to your child?  **THAT'S why the Democrats want to address DACA NOW.... and

A BIG SHAM REVEALED! - After the shutdown occurred, White House Spokesperson Sara Sanders said "DACA is low priority for the White House."  So, If the Democrats signed the continuing resolution to keep the government open, the Republicans wouldn't address the 800,000 kids and force them all to go back to countries they've never known.  Shame on the Republicans. How heartless to not care about almost 1 million Children!

WHO CONTROLS CONGRESS -The Republicans have the majority in both the Senate and the House. They cower to a Republican president who brags that he’s the best negotiator ever.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW:   The Republican “leaders” couldn’t even get enough votes among themselves to keep the government open.

This is the first time in the history of the United States that a Shutdown has happened when 1 party controlled both houses in Congress and the Presidency.
Of course, now the Republican “leaders” are blaming the Democrats for the shutdown. WRONG!

Video: A Review of Cuts from Justice League Film

   If you saw the film "Justice League" last November and enjoyed it as we did, you may be curious to know what was in the 30 plus minutes that was edited out of the film. A You Tube host of "Flicks and the City" compiled and explained what those edits were.One that I really liked was the opening scene where Wonder Woman took on terrorists in London, and the re-filming did not have a bomb go off in the building (instead, Wonder Woman tossed it away). I'm really over a lot of destruction in movies!
  There's also references removed like Supergirl, Iris Allen (The Flash's girlfriend), and Superman's temporary black costume from the comics  (which he wears for a short time after he returns to life) - Rob

Important! What Evangelical Christians Now Believe (not regular Christians)

There's a sharp distinction between Evangenlical christians and TRUE Christians. True Christians (many of whom we are friends with) are outraged that the Far-right wing Evangelical Christians keep giving them a bad name, because Evangelicals now stand for hatred and intolerance. In fact, what we've learned from the recent race in Alabama is that Evangelicals stand for much worse than just those two things.  Let us be CLEAR- Regular Christians don't stand for what Evangelicals do. Here's the list and suggestions to fix the "Evangelical" problem and re-claim Christianity:

1) Pedophilia is okay

2) Hatred for non-christians (like jews, muslims, etc.) 

3) Gay people should be hated and deemed "Illegal"

4) Okay to defy the law and the Supreme Court

5) Okay NOT to treat all people equally (What would Jesus think?)

6) "Slavery unites families"

7) Muslims shouldn't be in Congress (but perverts can)
8) Okay to use racial slurs
9) Only white men should vote  (changed by one of the last 17 amendments)

WHERE DID THIS LIST COME FROM?  It was mostly "Evangelical Christians" (and White Men) who supported the losing Senate GOP candidate Roy Moore in Alabama. It was Roy Moore  who stood for those 9 things (and more) and Evangelicals totally supported him, thus, they stand for the same thing.

WHY THIS IS A PROBLEM - Evangelicals make up roughly 33% of all Christians (but Christians don't want them) and they always vote for conservatives who promote hatred and intolerance. 
HOW TO FIX IT - We'll never be free of those kinds of politicians unless more non-evangelicals vote and drown out their hatred. Further, Christians who are NOT Evangelicals need to forcefully tell them that Evangelicals do not represent Christian beliefs.

A federal judge eventually ruled in 2003 that the statue violated the First Amendment's principle of separation of church and state, and ordered it to be removed. Moore refused to comply and was removed from office in 2004 on ethics grounds.

6) In 2005, he said "homosexual conduct" should still be illegal.

7) In 2012, Moore was reelected as Chief Justice in a surprise election result.

8) In 2016, Moore ordered Alabama judges to disobey the Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex marriage. Once again, Moore was found guilty of ethics violations and was suspended from office for the rest of his term. In April 2017 Moore announced he would run for Senate.

A Fun Baltimore Pop-Culture Cafe: BAMF

This past weekend we took a ride up to Baltimore to have coffee, tea and a snack at a new and fun cafe filled with decorations of Star Wars, Star Trek and Superhero characters. It's called "BAMF" and its located just north of Baltimore's Amtrak station and the famous Charles Theatre.

The BAMF cafe is located at 1821 N Charles St, Baltimore, MD 21201. 

They serve breakfast, lunch, drinks and coffee and basically they encompass books. action figures. movies. and celebrating the comic arts and all things geek culture.

  They menu is filled with items named for science fiction characters or superheroes, and cardboard cut outs of those characters, toys and figurines of them are peppered through the cafe.

  At each table there are sketches of those figures on the wall and little puzzles for kids, which Tom decided to put together while we were waiting! 
   It's a fun little cafe and worth a visit.

Movie Review: Murder on the Cape (based on a true story!)

 .

This past weekend we watched the 2017 local Massachusetts film "Murder on the Cape." We didn't know it was inspired by a true story on Cape Cod.  The actors appear to be all local which made the story more believable. As a Mass. native I could tell the Boston accents were genuine. Opening with the murder scene was a great way to set the stage of the film,because it draws you in- just like reading murder mysteries, and I read a lot of them.   
 Although some of the people who reviewed this film gave it awful marks, it wasn't!  In fact, we watched it all the way through (with bad movies I start reading and stop paying attention - I didn't with this).  The actors did a good job, and made you interested in the characters and the situation of an incredibly hunky guy (Actor Josh Walther) having an affair with a woman who was aggressive and seductive, then angry.  It was believable and kept our attention.   

VERY LOCAL - The story and the feel of the film is very local. If you lived on Cape Cod, you understand the "slow season" in the winter there, and how melancholy it can be. It really gives you a great feel for what it's like to live on the Cape in the wintertime when tourists are not around.
    NOTE- REVIEWERS CAN BE STUPID: The film doesn't follow the case, it's NOT a documentary, it was just "INSPIRED" by the murder. People who reviewed it and gave it poor reviews don't seem to understand that "inspired by" doesn't mean "a documentary."   The screenwriter changed the murderer from the true "disconnected" garbage man to involvement of someone dealing drugs because it made more sense. That's what GOOD storytellers do!  The critics of this film are idiots who don't understand what creative license means.

BOTTOM LINE:  It's a GOOD MOVIE.  We give it 3.5 stars out of 5. It's an interesting story.  But, Josh Walther needed to take his shirt off more! )

ABOUT THE FILM: It was Inspired by the Christa Worthington Murder case. An out of work fisherman has an affair with a fashion writer wintering on the Cape. She returns two years later with his child, and when she is murdered, the fisherman is the prime suspect. 

THE ACTUAL CASE - Christa Worthington, 46 was found murdered in her Truro, Mass. home on Jan. 6, 2002. Police seemed to focus their investigation mostly on men who had been romantically involved with the stylish former fashion writer and single mother of a 2-year-old daughter. Excellent Classic Comic Collection: SHOWCASE PRESENTS: JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA VOL. 6

   The Justice League of America comic book series was at its peak in comics (in my opinion) in the 1970s and the DC Showcase Presents Justice League of America, volume 6 was the best of the best. It contains the original team up on Earth-X, a story that was used in the recent CW TV shows of The Flash, Arrow, Legends and Supergirl!  
  Of course it introduced the Ray, and the other Freedom Fighters (superheroes of Earth-X). There were amazing stories with villains like  Felix Faust, the Shaggy Man, Eclipso, Amazo, the Injustice Society and more.
    There are also heroes I love like The Red Tornado, Phantom Stranger and Elongated Man that are included in these stories.
  BEST of the  volumes... I'll treasure this 500 page (sadly out of print) collection!!

Idiot of the Week: Man Drives into Frigid River to Avoid Police

This week's idiot isn't political, just a moron who drove into a frigid river in Oregon to elude police. What in the world was he thinking?   (And what's with the spelling of his name?) Below is the story, pictures and video of the truck actually driving off the pier!

ASTORIA, Ore. -- A suspected boat prowler fleeing from police drove his pickup off an Oregon pier and into the Columbia River. CBS News affiliate KOIN-TV reports 27-year-old Timofey Erofeeff, of Scotts Mill drove into the frigid river.

    Officers arrived at North Tongue Point on the morning of Dec. 27, 2017  after getting reports that a man, identified as 27-year-old Timofey Erofeeff of Scotts Mills, was trespassing on boats.

When they approached Erofeeff to take him into custody for a Deschutes County parole violation, he sped off down a dock in his truck and drove it into the Columbia River. The sequence was caught on camera.

   Astoria police said Erofeeff managed to escape the sinking truck and swim a couple hundred feet away from the pier but then returned to be rescued.

    Because of the elevated pier, officers threw Erofeeff a life vest and flotation disc until he was plucked out of the waters.

    Erofeeff was taken to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia before being booked into the Clatsop County Jail on charges including criminal trespass, parole violation and reckless driving.

    As of Wednesday night, the truck was still in the water with a visible fuel sheen coming from it. The temperature was around 40 degrees that day. Police said they were working with the Coast Guard to form a plan to fish the truck out of the water.

Frostbite is a Serious Danger for White Men in Shorts in Winter

For the last couple of years, we've noticed ONLY white men wearing shorts in the winter time. As a meteorologist, I find
that incredibly DUMB. It's dumb and dangerous especially because of the Arctic outbreaks the U.S. has been experiencing (as a result of global warming causing temperature extremes), Frostbite can occur within 30 MINUTES on exposed skin. 
  You DON'T want Frostbite. You can lose limbs.   In this blog, we'll tell you what frostbite is, what it does and why you should NEVER wear shorts in winter..

Here's the thing about it, too: People of all other ethnicities are Smart enough Not to wear shorts in the winter time. It's just White men who do it.   We've noticed that it has been happening in the Baltimore / Washington area for the last 5 years or so and can't understand where it started. However, after a google search, it's happening all over the U.S.

DANGEROUS -   This is such a dangerous thing because of FROSTBITE.  On Sunday, January 14 it was 17 Degrees Fahrenheit with a Wind Chill of 5 degrees.     It was then we saw a White man in shorts walking through a parking lot.

 WHAT IS FROSTBITE?  Just like water turns to ice when the temperature drops, your fingers, hands, toes, feet - even your nose and ears -- can freeze. Being further away from your core, they are the first organs affected by decreased bloodflow in response to cold. How soon this happens depends on how cold and windy it is outside. It can happen faster than you may think. In severely frigid weather, frostbite can happen in just 5 minutes.

• Skin turns a pale yellow or white

• It may itch, sting, burn, or feel like "pins and needles."

Intermediate stage

• Skin becomes hard
• It looks shiny or waxy
• When the skin thaws, blisters filled with fluid or blood form

Advanced stage

• Skin is very hard and cold to the touch
• Skin darkens quickly. It may look blue and later turn black

Some people don't know they have frostbite because as it gets worse, you can't feel the area anymore.  
RECOVERY TIME FROM FROSTBITE? The recovery time for a frostbite injury depends on the extent of tissue injury and whether or not there are any subsequent complications, such as infection. It may take 1 to 3 months before it is possible to determine the extent of tissue damage, and to clearly delineate which tissue is still viable.
SOMETIMES the skin OR THE LIMB cannot be saved and it has to be AMPUTATED.

UGH.  You knew it was going to happen. Even Disney isn't safe for kids anymore. An animatronic figure of Donald Trump has joined Disney's Hall of Presidents in Florida. Business Insider reported  some people are horrified by the robotic president.
    We get it that it's the hall of Presidents, and he's (unfortunately) one of them, but they could have relegated him to the back of the group and not given him a speaking part (because his voice makes people's skin crawl). 

BAD EXAMPLE FOR CHILDREN VISITING THE PARKS - 
Further, he is NOT an example for children and families that attend the parks. 
As anyone has figured out, he loves white supremacists and Nazis, and hates anyone who is not straight, white, male and an evangelical (wacko) christian. He's

CBS Miami reports that a robotic facsimile of the 45th president of the United States stood front and slightly off-center Monday for the soft reopening of the long-running Walt Disney World attraction.
