NOAA Graphic: 10 Signs of a Warming World

For those interested in science and wanting to understand how our warming world is affecting land, sea and air, take a look at this graphic from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
It's from their website: http://climate.noaa.gov/warmingworld/. -
Anyone that doesn't believe that the world is warming, and that mankind has had something to do with it is denying the Facts. I work for an agency that has proven countless times anthropogenic (man-made) global warming is a fact. -  Rob

The 2009 State of the Climate report served as a basis for the poster and this website. This report draws on data for 10 key climate indicators that all point to the same finding: the scientific evidence that our world is warming is unmistakable. More than 300 scientists from 160 research groups in 48 countries contributed to the report, which confirms that the past decade was the warmest on record and that the Earth has been growing warmer over the last 50 years.
This set of indicators was selected, as we would unambiguously expect them to increase or decrease if the world were warming. In a warming world, based upon simple physical principles we would expect some indicators to increase land surface air temperature, sea-surface temperature, marine air temperature, sea level, tropospheric temperature, ocean heat content and specific humidity.
Conversely, we would expect the following indicators to decline: snow cover, sea-ice extent, glacier mass, and stratospheric temperatures. Stratospheric temperature decline is also influenced by ozone depletion.

Our Fiery Red Maple Trees

Several years ago we planted maple trees in the front yard, and this year their colors are amazing: Fiery Red!!  The southern-most tree is the largest, followed by the middle tree, and the northern most tree is the smallest.

Rent this DVD Now: RED DOG

The movie "RED DOG" is based on the true story of a legendary dog that united an Australian mining community and eventually adopted a master. It was filmed in Australia in 2011.

Red Dog  is a short novel by Louis de Bernières charting the life of a popular dog, a "Red Cloud Kelpie" nicknamed Red Dog, in Karratha, Western Australia. I (Rob) read the book and really enjoyed it- the movie was outstanding and both Tom and I highly recommend it!

Now I understand: Question 4: The DREAM ACT

On election day, this question is on the ballot. Now I understand it better, and it's not a "free ride" as some would lead us to believe.  - Rob

Question 4: The DREAM ACT

If voters approve Question 4 in November, it would allow Maryland’s undocumented high school graduates to pay in-state tuition at the state’s public universities, but only if they satisfy some pretty formidable criteria.
  • Their parents must have filed three or more years of income tax returns.
  • Students must first go to a community college where they must earn 60 credits or an associate’s degree.
  • Students must be admitted to a Maryland public university, having met all academic requirements for admission.
Thus, only after having established a history of filing tax returns, studying at a community college, and academically earning admission to a four-year college would an undocumented student be afforded the opportunity to pay in-state tuition. And, because  undocumented transfer students would count as non-residents, even though they pay in-state rates, they would not compete for college slots with other qualified Maryland resident students.

TOM'S Architecture Blog: Fay Jones School of Architecture Addition University of Arkansas

Fay Jones School of Architecture Addition
University of Arkansas

Every reader of this blog is probably familiar with the name Frank Lloyd Wright, famous for his works of architecture and infamous for the abuse of his students.  But that’s the topic of another future blog posting.  Some of Wright’s students actually became famous by their own right; one of which is architect E. Fay Jones.  Back in 1993, while on a bus trip with my Mom, I had the opportunity to visit Thorncrown Chapel.  This beautiful piece of architecture, design by Fay Jones and constructed in 1980, is located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
The idea of a tiny chapel in the woods was conceived by Jim Reed, a retired school teacher who originally bought the property on which the chapel now stands to build his retirement home.  But the intrinsic beauty of the property, and the constant flood of visitors traipsing over his land, led Reed to build a welcoming place for these trespassers rather than shooing them off.
The structure is built mostly out of indigenous materials, which greatly reduced the cost of its construction.  The close spacing of the tall vertical slender members mimic the trees of the surrounding woods.  The natural stone path leading up to the chapel continues inside and combined with the structure’s soaring vertical height, the viewer’s perception of inside versus outside is continuously blurred.
The architect-designed, custom fabricated light fixtures which are continuously lit emit a low amber glow, similar to a campfire, that add an extra special touch to the ambience that only add to experience that you are truly in a very special place.
To honor the legacy of Fay Jones and his many years of teaching, the University of Arkansas named the School of Architecture building on its campus after the former faculty member.  Originally designed and constructed in 1935 to be the university’s library, this Beaux Arts building has served as the school of architecture since 1968.  Now a planned addition, designed by Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, once again illustrates that today’s architects have not a clue as to what they are doing.

Check out this rendering which shows the protruding stone clad eyesore poking out into the fore court of this once grand edifice.  It makes me want to grab a giant pair of pruning shears and lob it off at the root ball.  What an abhorrent disgrace.
The new addition bears no resemblance to the surrounding structures, which architects refer to as contextualism.  It makes no attempt to interpret in modern way the classical proportions or banding of its handsome neighbors.  And where the hell are the windows?  It’s bad enough that architecture students spend a disproportionate amount of their time slaving over projects for their studio classes, but to deprive them of any kind of connection to the outdoors is just cruel, thoughtless, and an abomination in every sense of the word.  Love the hovering protruding mass out over the landscaped beds.  When I was in architecture school, we spent weeks studying how buildings meet the ground.  I guess this idiot never thought that marrying the building to the site was an important concept to master.
The AIA’s published critique of this piece of crud says “the completed project promises to be a symbiotic hybrid of historic and modern, the process by which that hybrid arrives is really a radical departure from the way architecture has been created in the past.”  [1]  HUH?  What are these guys smoking?
And the architect that designed this claptrap wrote:  “This project provides a forward spirit for the university, informed by the old, but decidedly new.” [2]  UGH.  This is exactly why I will never achieve fellow status with the AIA.  This building is horrible and it’s embarrassing that it’s a attached to the school of architecture and associated with an institution of higher learning.  We have got to start speaking out and demanding better performance from architects.

Dangerously Stupid People in Power

Here's an example of 4 extremely stupid people holding office. These idiots need to go.

1) Georgia Republican on the SCIENCE COMMITTEE on Congress calls PROVEN SCIENCE "Lies": Says evolution and the Big Bang theory as “lies from the pit of hell”
2) Anti-abortion Tenn. Republican urges pregnant mistress to have an abortion before his WIFE finds out. Then stands against abortions.
3) "Family Values" GOP Florida Governor gives out Adult  Phone Line By Accident
4) Michelle Bachmann is on the House Intelligence committee. How Ironic!!!

1) Congressman draws fire for calling evolution, Big Bang ‘lies from the pit of hell’

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor
Washington (CNN) – A U.S. congressman is attracting attention and criticism for an online video that shows him blasting evolution and the Big Bang theory as “lies from the pit of hell” in a recent speech at a church event in his home state of Georgia.
“All that stuff I was taught about evolution, embryology, the Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell,” U.S Rep. Paul Broun said in an address last month at a banquet organized by Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia. “And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”
Broun, a medical doctor by training, serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.Speaking at Liberty Baptist Church’s Sportsman’s Banquet on September 27, he said that “a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth.”“I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old,” Broun said in the speech, which Liberty Baptist Church posted on its website via YouTube.  “I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says."Scientists say that the Earth is roughly 4.5 billion years old and that the universe dates back 13.7 billion years. http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/10/congressman-draws-fire-for-calling-evolution-big-bang-lies-from-the-pit-of-hell/?hpt=hp_t2

2) Transcript: GOP Rep. Scott DesJarlais urged abortion

NASHVILLE, Tenn.— A freshman congressman running for re-election on a pro-life platform urged his pregnant mistress to get an abortion a decade ago, according to a transcript of the recorded conversation. The undated phone recording appears to have been made before Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais’ divorce from his wife, Susan, was finalized in 2001. In the conversation, DesJarlais tells the unidentified woman that he was concerned that she has delayed getting an abortion, and that he was willing to travel to Atlanta with her to get the procedure done.  http://www.bostonherald.com/news/us_politics/view.bg?articleid=1061166685&srvc=rss

3) FL GOP Governor  Rick Scott Gives Out Phone Sex Number In Lieu Of Florida Meningitis Hotline

Florida governor Rick Scott accidentally sent constituents seeking information on a fungal meningitis outbreak to a phone sex hotline.
WUSF reports the gaffe was first noticed by readers after the station published a number Scott reeled off during a Florida Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the day Florida's first death from the outbreak was confirmed:
"You can call the Dept. of Health's toll-free, 24 hour hotline set up in response to this," Scott said reading off an 866 number. When WUSF posted that telephone number as part of its web story, we were quickly notified by a reader that the number instead connected to an adult telephone line.
"Hello boys, thank you for calling me on my anniversary," is how the recording opens. A young female voice then directs "existing callers" to press one, and so on.

A Scary and Very Wrong Platform

I think that abortion is a horrible thing, but in the case of rape, incest or danger to the mother's life, it needs to be legally available. This year's Republican platform wants to make all of those ILLEGAL and hope to overturn Roe vs. Wade. That's too far.
**Not only that, but the platform also includes banning ALL same-sex marriages across the U.S. and overturning the states laws. This is outrageous.

FACTS: GOP Platform to Outlaw All Abortion: The 2012 Republican platform calls for a constitutional amendment to grant personhood to embryonic cells. Should that happen states would have no power to contract or expand reproductive rights because reproductive rights would, effectively, be banned.

**Today's BALTIMORE SUN- Do you think this teenage girl should carry her rapist's baby?
Two men arrested in teen's abduction in Catonsville, rape in Baltimore

Two Baltimore men have been arrested in the midday abduction of a 17-year-old girl in Catonsville and her subsequent rape in Baltimore on Monday, according to Baltimore County police.
The pair, identified as William Campbell, 25, of the 4600 block of Pen Lucy Road in Ten Hills, and Kenyon Waller, 21, of the 3200 block of Westwood Avenue in Rosemont, were arrested Monday night after a separate kidnapping in the city led police to the owner of the vehicle they were using, according to Cpl. Cathy Batton, a police spokesman.
Campbell has also been tied to a third, Sept. 25 incident in the same area of Catonsville involving robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault of another teen, police said.

**PERSONAL NOTE: A former friend of mine, who is a "Christian" told me that she knows of a young girl that carried and gave birth to her Rapist's baby. She told a couple of people that the baby is a "blessing"- but her mind is a mess.
Imagine looking at your child and remembering the night you were violently raped. The mental torture of trying to love a child that was created by some mysterious person who was violent to you, tried to harm you is unfathomable.   What Mental Torture that would be for the 9 months and the lifetime afterward!!  And Ultra-Conservative, right wing "Christians" think it's okay to force women to endure this torture?  Outrageous. That is Not caring for women.

In an interview with ABC’s “This Week” Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, chairman of the Republican convention platform committee cited the party’s anti-abortion under every-circumstance plank means that rape and incest victims MUST give birth to babies from rapists and relatives.
WOMEN READERS: Would YOU carry a rapists or relative's baby?
Wouldn't that screw up your mind??

Fortunately, not all Republicans share that view. Former Florida Governor and Republican Charlie Crist endorsed President Obama in an op-ed where he criticized the party for veering hard to the right on many issues. “Look no further than the inclusion of the Akin amendment in the Republican Party platform, which bans abortion even for rape victims,” wrote Crist.

Henry VIII's Hidden History

Tom has been researching Henry VIII's life for years, and he recently uncovered a "secret son."

HENRY VIII's ILLEGITIMATE SON
Henry FitzRoy, Duke of Richmond
Henry VIII had an illegitimate son by a mistress (Lady Elizabeth Blount).  The son was named Henry Fitzroy ("son of the king") and lavished with titles and entitlements that made him the second richest person in the kingdom, second only to the king himself.  He was known as Henry FitzRoy, Duke of Richmond, illegitimate son of Henry VIII of England. The portrait miniature, is circ. 1534-1535.
At the age of 14, Henry Fitzroy married Mary (Thomas Howard's only daughter).  The marriage was never consummated.  He died of TB at the age of 17, on July 23, 1536 - note that Anne Boleyn was beheaded on May 19, 1536.  They would have no doubt known each other.  Henry Fitzroy's widow never remarried, and she died at age 36.  They are buried together in the same tomb at St. Michael's, Suffolk.
WHERE DID HE LIVE?  - According to tudorswiki.com,
Henry Fitzroy was sent to live in the north of England to help control the area, living in the castle at Sheriff Hutton just north of York, on his way there he stayed at the home of Lady Maud Parr nee Green (mother of Queen Catherine Parr, Anne Parr, and William Parr) whose brother-in-law William was in charge of Fitzroy's household, and her son William was a companion of Fitzroy's. Lady Parr's daughter would accompany them as far as Lincolnshire where the 11 year old Catherine was to marry Lord Borough's son.

WHO WERE HENRY FITZROY'S RELATIVES?
Family members:
Father: Henry VIII
Mother: Elizabeth Blount
Half-sister: Princess Mary Tudor
Half-sister: Princess Elizabeth Tudor
Half-brother: Prince Edward Tudor
Paternal grandfather: Henry VII of England
Paternal grandmother: Elizabeth of York
Maternal grandfather: Sir John Blount
Maternal grandmother: Catherine Pershall

Rob's Birthday: the Event in Massachusetts

Ed, Rob, Jim
During the week of Oct. 6th, I (Rob) flew to Massachusetts to visit family and partake in a double medium event with my friend Ruthie, who is an amazing medium. The event was amazing, and I'll post pictures of that later.
 -  My younger brother Doug and sister-in-law Sue, and my nephews Brian and Scotty put together a surprise breakfast open house for me on the Sunday I was there. I was really surprised and several friends drove from over an hour away to be there for me. It was humbling, and I was so thankful to everyone. Here are some pictures from that event.

Yup- it's true: 50
BTW- Today, Oct. 17th is actually my birthday - yup, number 5-0... although I still feel like I'm in my 30s. In fact, working out, eating smaller portions (and not being ashamed to take home a doggy bag), lots of coffee, exercising several times a week and walking the dogs three times a day help keep me at the same weight I've been for decades. - I'm taking half a day off, too!

Saw "The Avengers" on DVD

The Superhero team movie called "The Avengers" came out on DVD, so we rented it Friday night. I (Rob) am a huge superhero and comic book fan, although my favorite heroes are in the DC Comics line: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman...
The Avengers features Nick Fury,  Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America (a favorite of mine), Hawkeye and Black Widow.  The story is about how Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. (a gov't organization to protect the country) brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from the norse God gone mad - Loki and his army.
As much as I loved seeing all of the heroes together, I have to give this movie a "B." The infighting between heroes was overdone, but the origins were hinted at, and done well. The costumes were great, although why Chris Evans (Capt. America) dyed his hair is beyond me (it made him look odd for this movie for some reason). We both enjoyed the movie, though. Our favorite part was the very physical confrontation where the Hulk slammed Loki back and forth on the ground. We laughed out loud. :)

Ed's Birthday: Remembering

Today is Ed's birthday. He would have been 52 years old, but an accidental mix of prescription medications took him from everyone in 1996.
Ed - very communicative and very funny on the other side
Ed is Tom's former partner whom has come through to me many times with messages. In 2011, Ed's spirit gave me many disconnected signs, pictures, words and symbols that took us on a treasure-hunt like trip with Ed's father in Virginia, that proved that Ed was with every one of his family members the week before we arrived. The messages to me wound up being personal confirmations of things that his family members were involved with the week before we arrived - things I had no knowledge of (I had never before met the family). It was so amazing that Ed was able to help show his grieving father (of 15 years) that he was still around. I wound up including that story in my second book, "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead."

Ed is a strong spirit and I've come to know him very well, including his sense of humor as a result of the messages I've received from him, even though I never met him in life. That's one of the benefits of being a medium. You get to know people who passed away, from the messages and words they give you. In addition, we maintain our personalities on the other side, so it's easy to get to know them. Happy Birthday, Ed!! I know you can hear me. We're having birthday cake tonight in your memory.
