What is the North American Monsoon?

 Did you know that the U.S. has a monsoon season? It does. It happens in the southwestern United States. Recently, NOAA, or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote a great and comprehensive story about what it is, how it works, and what the effects of a changing climate may be on the monsoon season. Here's that great story> 

What is the North American Monsoon?

If you live in the U.S. Southwest or northwestern Mexico, you may already be familiar with the annual climate phenomenon called the North American Monsoon, especially since rainfall in some spots has been way above average this summer. In fact, this monsoon may turn out to be the wettest on record for some places! More on that later… Now, let’s take a sojourn through some North American Monsoon basics (1).

What is the North American Monsoon? The North American Monsoon is a seasonal change in the atmospheric circulation that occurs as the summer sun heats the continental land mass. During much of the year, the prevailing wind over northwestern Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico is westerly (blowing from the west) and dry. (Going forward, to avoid having to say “northwestern Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico” over and over, I’ll refer to this area as “the monsoon region.”)

As the summer heat builds over North America, a region of high pressure forms over the U.S. Southwest, and the wind becomes more southerly, bringing moisture from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California. This circulation brings thunderstorms and rainfall to the monsoon region, providing much of their annual total precipitation.

The monsoon starts to develop in Mexico in June, and moves into the U.S. Southwest in July. By early to mid-September, wind patterns have generally reverted back to the westerly pattern, bringing an end to the monsoon. There is some variability in the onset and demise of the monsoon.

What impacts does it have on Mexico and the U.S. Southwest?

Rainfall associated with the monsoon is very important for the region. Northwestern Mexico receives upwards of 75% of its average annual precipitation from it, and Arizona and New Mexico more than 50%, during July–September.

For many of us, the word “monsoon” conjures images of heavy rain lasting for months. While that’s often the situation for the Indian monsoon, the monsoon in North America behaves a bit differently. The rainfall generally has a strong diurnal cycle, meaning a daily pattern of mostly dry mornings, storms developing through the day, and most rainfall occurring in the afternoon and evening. Some of these thunderstorms can be strong, delivering heavy rain and frequent lightning. Monsoon rainfall activity tends to be grouped into bursts, with periods of rainy days interspersed with drier periods, rather than rain every day. Also, the occasional eastern Pacific tropical storm can increase monsoon moisture and rainfall.

The impacts of the monsoon go beyond just rainfall amounts. There is also an important relationship between rainfall and temperature: usually, more rain leads to cooler conditions, and less rain leads to hotter conditions.

One recent study explored the relationship between the monsoon and wildfires in the Southwest and northern Mexico, finding that monsoon rains were important for ending wildfires.

When was the North American Monsoon discovered?

The rainy season would have been critical for Native Americans for thousands of years, and, for some Native American tribes, continues to be so. Scientists first noted the seasonal rainfall patterns in the Southwest in the early 20th century, with the circulation pattern being understood as monsoonal by midcentury. A couple of field campaigns, including the Arizona-based South-West Monsoon Project (SWAMP, 1993) and the international North American Monsoon Experiment (2004), provided a lot of observational data and resulted in a better understanding of the mechanics of the monsoon.

What affects the North American Monsoon?

Although there has been a fair amount of research into the monsoon, there are still far more questions than answers about how it works, and if the seasonal amount of rain, potential start date, or other characteristics can be predicted. I listened to the Southwest Climate Podcast from CLIMAS, the Climate Assessment for the Southwest, to learn more about what affects the monsoon and its rainfall, and how Monsoon 2021 is shaping up, and reached out to the podcast co-hosts, Zack Guido and Mike Crimmins, for help with this post.

Rainfall, as anyone who has read the ENSO Blog before will know, is an extremely complicated thing to predict! When you add in the sparse rain-gauge observations available in the U.S. Southwest and Mexico, it becomes even more difficult to make confident statements about the effects of the monsoon and how it can be predicted. In the podcast episode “2021—a generational monsoon?” Zack listed some of the factors that influence how much moisture is available to the monsoon, including the position of the high-pressure area, wind patterns, and transient weather features. Another player is land-surface feedbacks—wetter soils provide more moisture to the air through evaporation.

Zack also mentioned our good friend El Niño! Here at the ENSO Blog, we’re always curious about the role of ENSO (El Niño/Southern Oscillation, the entire El Niño/La Niña system). He pointed out that ENSO does influence Pacific tropical storms, which can supply moisture to the monsoon.

I did a quick comparison of the average July–August rainfall in the monsoon region with the Niño-3.4 index, using 70 years of records. Some earlier studies suggested that El Niño may be related to lower July–August rainfall, and La Niña related to higher rainfall, due to large-scale atmospheric circulation changes. We can see some hints of this relationship in my scatter-plot here.

“Hey! But El Niño leads to ­more tropical storms than average,” you’re saying, because you’re not new here. “How would that result in less total July–August rain?” Good question! And yet another element of the monsoon system that needs more study to resolve.

How is climate change affecting the North American Monsoon?

Likewise, it’s not yet clear how the monsoon is changing in the warming climate, or how it will in the future. Zack and Mike mention that last year was an extremely dry monsoon, and this year is extremely wet. So is climate change increasing monsoon variability? It’s largely too soon to tell. When you take an already highly variable phenomenon like rainfall, add in uncertain regional climate change impacts, and factor in the sparse data record, it gets difficult to make a strong case about exactly how the monsoon rainfall is changing.

However, while the effect of warming on the storms is uncertain, temperatures have been increasing. The warming conditions alone can be impactful, drying out soils quicker during breaks in monsoon rainfall, for example (2).

The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCCSixth Assessment Report covers observed and potential future changes in the North American Monsoon. Regarding changes that have already occurred, the report finds modest evidence that the monsoon rainfall has intensified since the 1970s, and this has been partly attributed to greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, there is not much agreement among projections for future change in the monsoon, except for regarding the timing—most projections suggest that, under continued climate change, the monsoon will start later in the summer and end later in the fall than it currently does (3).

What about this year?

It depends where you are! Zack and Mike described this year’s monsoon for southern Arizona as “generational,” meaning once in a generation. It’s not over yet, but possible that the overall monsoon rainfall in Arizona will end up being the highest on record. Some regions have received more than 200% of the average rainfall, and Tucson recorded its wettest month ever this July. On the other hand, New Mexico and northern Mexico are near or a bit below average.

While this will help with the ongoing drought in the southwest, in many regions the precipitation deficit has been building for a long time. The current drought outlooks expect that the drought in Arizona and New Mexico will improve in the short term, but persist. Idiot of the Week: Calif. McDonald's Manager Gives dog diapers to staff as COVID masks

It's no wonder that people don't want to work for fast food restaurants or other places that tend to pay minimum wage, but when you have managers who don't even give you appropriate masks to protect you from COVID19,  and instead give you "makeshift masks" made from dog diapers and coffee filters - you have an IDIOT.  That's what happened at a McDonald's in Oakland, California. Oakland McDonald's settles lawsuit alleging dog diapers were given to staff as masks

The McDonald’s at 4514 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland has settled a lawsuit brought by employees after the franchise owner allegedly provided staff with masks made from dog diapers and coffee filters to protect them against COVID-19.

The settlement, which came Thursday, will require franchise owner Michael Smith to implement clearer safety measures like social distancing and paid sick leave, perform regular deep cleaning of the restaurant and provide masks and gloves to all employees, among other recommendations. It’s unclear whether the staff involved in the suit received any financial compensation as listed in the original lawsuit, the New York Times reported.

“Last year when McDonald’s tried to treat us like dogs, we didn’t sit down or stay silent. We joined together and fought for our dignity as human beings — and we won,” Angely Lambert said in a statement shared with Bloomberg Law. “First, we made history by going on strike and shutting down our store for over a month. Now, we’ve made history again by winning a worker safety committee that will let us make decisions about how to keep ourselves and our customers safe.”

The New York Times reported that the McDonald’s Corporation was not a defendant in the lawsuit. In a statement shared with SFGATE, McDonald's said that all franchises were given a handbook that outlined both procedures and requirements amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Heroes Of the Week: Paul "Pen" Farthing and UK for Rescuing Afghanistan Rescue Animals

 As someone who works in animal rescue, I have seen many go above and beyond to ensure all animals are safe. That's the case of this week's heroes: Paul 'Pen" Farthing in Afghanistan and the United Kingdom Royal Air Force who helped him and the animals in the rescue, evacuate the country safely. Afghanistan: Pen Farthing has 'mixed emotions' after landing in UK


The founder of an animal shelter in Afghanistan has said he has "mixed emotions" after arriving in the UK after leaving Kabul.

Paul "Pen" Farthing landed at Heathrow Airport on Sunday morning, August 29th, having previously been caught up in Thursday's Kabul airport bomb blasts. Mr Farthing's charity Nowzad confirmed he and his animals left the country on Saturday without his staff

He said on Twitter he had "true deep feeling of sadness for Afghan today".

Mr Farthing, a former Royal Marine who is originally from Dovercourt in Essex, set up the Nowzad animal shelter in Kabul, rescuing dogs, cats and donkeys, after serving in Afghanistan in the mid-2000s.

Since the collapse of the Afghan government, Mr Farthing and his supporters have campaigned to have his staff, their families and 140 dogs and 60 cats evacuated from the country in a plan he named Operation Ark.

Afghanistan: UK offers to help evacuate rescue animals and staff

The UK says it will help evacuate staff and animals from a charity sanctuary in Afghanistan.

Paul "Pen" Farthing had accused ministers of cutting him off after supporters funded a chartered plane.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace now says that if Mr Farthing arrives at Kabul airport with his animals "we will seek a slot for his plane".  "If he does not have his animals with him he and his staff can board an RAF flight," he added on Twitter.

Royal Marine veteran Mr Farthing founded the Nowzad animal shelter, rescuing dogs, cats and donkeys after serving in Afghanistan in the mid-2000s. He has said he would not leave the country without his staff or animals.

On Tuesday, Mr Wallace said he was not prepared to prioritise animals ahead of the evacuation of people "in real danger".

He said he couldn't push them through Taliban checks or crowds.

Vet Iain McGill told the BBC that a private flight funded by donations is on standby to rescue the group.

"The important thing about this mission is that it's a humanitarian mission. It is to rescue Pen Farthing, his 68 staff, and 130 other vulnerable Afghan people," Dr McGill said.

"It will also rescue over 150 cats and dogs, many of them belonging to UK servicemen and women. The important thing is that every seat on that plane will be filled on the flight back to the UK."Mr Wallace said he had authorised the Ministry of Defence to facilitate the processing of Pen Farthing's staff to fly to the UK. 

Nowzad Update - Operation Ark   31 August 2021

Operation Ark was a partial success with the safe evacuation of the Nowzad animals and Pen from Kabul during the last few hours of Kabul airport being secured by British and American troops.

Sadly the Taliban were not willing to let our Afghan national staff leave Afghanistan even though they finally had the correct paperwork from the UK government.

The dogs and cats of Operation Ark are now safely in quarantine and holding kennels relevant to their vaccinations and DEFRA approved blood testing dates and will be available for adoption from the Nowzad website in due course. Please do not message the quarantine kennels directly. They do not have the capacity or authority to adopt out any Nowzad dogs or cats.

The list of available dogs and cats and the procedure for adopting them will be published during mid-September. Our only focus now as a charity is the safety of our staff who were forced to remain in Kabul.

 I really, really despise selfish people. Those are the people who have refused to get a vaccine against COVID19, not only to save themselves, but their friends, relatives, neighbors and everyone they come in contact with. Today, news from Jacksonville, Florida is horrendous. COVID19 victims are writhing in pain, shivering, vomiting with horrible aches and more.  The scene at the Jacksonville main public library was haunting, Louis Lopez recalled. As he waited for a Covid-19 monoclonal antibody treatment, he saw people so sick they couldn't even stand. "These people were in bad, bad shape," he said.  Libraries are normally places of solitude and silence. On Wednesday, however, Lopez described a persistent sound of crying and pained moans from some of those seeking treatment. One woman in line was so sick that she couldn't even stand, Lopez said. Because she couldn't stand, he said she crawled over to the wall.  "That's when I actually thought, 'This thing, when I read that this thing kills,'" he said. "If you die because of Covid, not only are you going to be alone, you're going to be in a lot of pain. Discovery: Thapunngaka shawi- a Prehistoric Flying "dragon"

 Imagine seeing a bird with a 23-foot wingspan... well, 110 million years ago in Australia, there was a flying dinosaur or pterosaur that big. Here's the story of the finding! '

Thapunngaka shawi was Australia's biggest known pterosaur.

About 110 million years ago in what is now Australia, a flying "dragon" dominated the skies. With an estimated 23-foot (7 meters) wingspan, it was the continent's biggest pterosaur, new research finds.

Pterosaur fossils are rare in Australia; fewer than 20 specimens have been described since paleontologists found the continent's first pterosaur bones about two decades ago. Scientists identified the newfound species, Thapunngaka shawi, from a fossilized piece of a lower jaw found at a site in North West Queensland dating to the Cretaceous period (about 145.5 million to 65.5 million years ago).

T. shawi's skull would have measured over 3 feet (1 m) long, and its mouth would have been crammed with approximately 40 teeth, making the extinct reptile "the closest thing we have to a real life dragon," study lead author Tim Richards, a doctoral candidate and researcher in The University of Queensland (UQ) Vertebrate Palaeontology and Biomechanics Lab, said in a statement.

The pterosaur's genus name, "Thapunngaka," comes from one of the languages spoken by the Indigenous people of the Wanamara Nation, who live where the fossil was discovered. The name incorporates "thapun [ta-BOON'] and ngaka [NGA'-ga]," which are "the Wanamara words for 'spear' and 'mouth,' respectively," the researchers wrote. "Shawi," the species name, is a nod to the man who found the fossil, an amateur prospector named Len Shaw.

"So the name means 'Shaw's spear mouth,'" the scientists wrote in the study.

The spear-mouthed pterosaur had a crest on the underside of its lower jaw, and its upper jaw was likely crested, too, according to the study. Toothed pterosaurs called anhanguerians had such skull crests, and the researchers classified T. shawi as part of that group.

"These crests probably played a role in the flight dynamics of these creatures," study co-author Steven Salisbury, a senior lecturer in the UQ School of Biological Sciences, said in the statement.

Excellent Graphic Novel! DC Comics: Suicide Squad vol 5., 2018

The new Suicide Squad film is out now at theatres, and the premise is that a secret
organization related to the government uses supervillains to combat worldwide menaces.  There are several volumes in trade paperback that collect the individual comic books. Volume 5 from 2018 was fantastic in several ways. Read on! 

The first version of the Suicide Squad debuted in The Brave and the Bold #25 (September 1959) and the second and modern version, created by John Ostrander, debuted in January 1987. 

WHAT IS THE CURRENT VERSION ABOUT? The modern incarnation of the Suicide Squad is Task Force X, an special operations team composed mostly of incarcerated supervillains who undertake high-risk black ops secret missions in exchange for either parolework release, and/or reduced prison sentences. Regardless of abilities and talent, every member of the squad is expendable and it is expected that not many will return. As expendable assets all, members are fitted with an explosive device in their neck to assure obedience. The Suicide Squad's name alludes to the dangerous nature of their missions. The team is based out of Belle Reve Penitentiary under the directorship of Amanda Waller and is generally commanded by Colonel Rick Flag Jr. in the field.

THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL IS EXCELLENTSuicide squad Vol 5  was published in  2018. The storyline is fantastic and so is the artwork! 

THIS ISSUE:  Amanda Waller , manager of the squad is mentally controlled by a Russian energy entity  and the Russian leader has his own suicide squad to eliminate the world's heroes.  The Suicide squad figures it out and the villains become heroes.

Famous 2,500-year-old Greek olive tree Burned

Yesterday's blog highlighted how a warmer world brings more extremes of droughts, wildfires, flooding and stronger storms. During the early part of August several areas of Greece, including the island of Evia, suffered from devastating wildfires. The fires were so bad and destructive on that particular island that it triggered many evacuations, and destroyed many buildings. But it also destroyed a centuries-old landmark, made famous in ancient Greek literature. Here's the story from Greek City times...

The catastrophic fires in Northern Evia, burned not only thousands of acres of virgin forest, but also the ancient Olive grove of Rovia, with the 2,500 years old olive tree among the victims.

The Evian tree is so ancient that it was even described in antiquity by the geographer and philosopher Strabo.

The ancient tree had a trunk that needed ten people to embrace it and it was still productive until its destruction.

Newsweek reported: The ancient tree, located in the olive grove of Rovia, even featured in the writings of renowned Greek geographer, philosopher and historian Strabo, who lived about 2,000 years ago.  Strabo, (born c. 64 bce, Amaseia, Pontus—died after 21 ce),  whose Geography is the only extant work covering the whole range of peoples and countries known to both Greeks and Romans during the reign of Augustus (27 bce–14 ce).

But images taken after fires ravaged the ancient olive grove in the north of the island show that the tree had been reduced to a hollowed out stump, with only fragments of its trunk remaining.
