Biden pardoning LGBTQ+ service members Dishonorably Discharged for orientation

 This has been a long time in coming. LGBTQ+ people who served in the military and were "discovered" were dishonorably discharged, making them ineligible for Veterans Benefits for Decades. These men and women who fought for our country. Now, that terrible wrong is finally being corrected. Here's the story.

President Biden is pardoning LGBTQ+ service members who were convicted of a crime under military law based on their sexual orientation, he is expected to announce Wednesday. The Biden administration estimates the move will affect "thousands" of service members convicted over the six decades that military law formally banned consensual homosexual conduct, senior administration officials told reporters on a call Tuesday.

"Today, I am righting an historic wrong by using my clemency authority to pardon many former service members who were convicted simply for being themselves," the president said in a statement. "Our nation's service members stand on the frontlines of freedom, and risk their lives in order to defend our country. Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Some of these patriotic Americans were subject to court-martial, and have carried the burden of this great injustice for decades."

Beginning in 1951, the Uniform Code of Military Justice Article 125 explicitly criminalized consensual "sodomy," until Congress and President Barack Obama decriminalized same-sex relationships through the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2014. But the effects of those convictions have lingered for those veterans, leaving criminal records and the stain of a dishonorable discharge, as CBS News has recently reported.

The military code is separate from, but related to, the infamous "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy adopted during the Clinton years and repealed during the Obama years. That policy banned openly gay and lesbian Americans from serving in the military.

The announcement doesn't automatically change these veterans' records; they will still have to apply for and complete a process, senior administration officials said. Eligible service members and veterans must apply for a certificate of pardon, which they can use to get their discharge status changed. That change of status will unlock veterans benefits that many of them have been denied. Officials aren't sure how long the process could take, or whether those who qualify will be eligible for back pay.

Scenic Drive, Breakfast with a friend in Historic Cornish, Maine

There's nothing with more of a New England feel than driving through mountains to a small town, and having a delicious breakfast on the front porch of an historic Inn. That's exactly what we did one weekend in June.  The drive from southern Maine to Cornish was beautiful, too.

The drive north took us through some of Maine's western mountains, the small (but congested with tourists) town of Limerick and a beautiful lake, so we took a moment to stop, take pictures and enjoy it. We saw Sokokis Lake and Hosac Mountain, and it was just breathtaking.

SOKOKIS LAKE AND HOSAC MOUNTAIN -Sokokis Lake, sometimes referred to as Holland Pond, is located adjacent to Route 11 in Limerick, Maine. Sokokis is managed for warmwater fish species due to the lack of cool, well-oxygenated water available during the summer. Hosac Mountain, is considered as part of Limerick, Maine. The elevation is 1,313 feet, and it's known for hiking. Based on peakery data, it ranks as the 698th highest mountain in Maine and the 53427th highest mountain in the United States.

MEETING A NEW FRIEND FOR BREAKFAST  - Rick attended one of my (Rob's) paranormal lectures in April, and I befriended him. He lives near Cornish, and told us about the town and how the restaurant at the historic inn was the best around. He wasn't kidding. It was fantastic, and it was wonderful to make a new friend.

ABOUT CORNISH, MAINE - Cornish is a town in York County, Maine, U.S. The population was 1,508 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area, although its a good hour away from there!

LINDSAY'S KITCHEN RESTAURANT - Enjoy Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Lindsay's in the historic Cornish Inn. The restaurant takes the entire first floor of the Inn, and has indoor seating and seating on the covered porch. Ingredients are sourced farm fresh whenever possible and locally roasted coffee and Maine maple syrup are staples.

ABOUT THE CORNISH INN -The Cornish Inn was built in the 1820s as a residence for a man named Cotton Lincoln. Calvin Woodbury purchased the building in the 1880s and turned it into the Lincoln House. During this time, it passed through several owners and eventually fell into disrepair. Fred C. Small recovered the building in the 1920s, and hired famed architect John Calvin Stevens. He was tasked with redesigning the interior and exterior at the tune of $30,000 (almost 500k today!). The redesign included hip roof, three story annex, six bathrooms, hot and cold water, piazza, refrigeration, steam heat, plate glass windows and 27 guest rooms. It was at this point that the inn was renamed the New Lincoln. The inn remained the New Lincoln until the 1980s, when it became The Cornish Inn.

NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY - According to the Website cornishme dot com, The Cornish area was on the path of the Pequawket Trail. The word “Pequawket” is believed to mean “sandy land." The Almouchiquois (Sokokis) Indians traveled the trail seasonally between Biddeford Pool on the ocean and the Mount Washington Valley in search of food. The Sokokis were members of the highly respected Tortoise Clan of the eastern Algonquins. 

SETTLEMENT OF CORNISH, MAINE -During the 1600s French fur traders bartered with the natives, exchanging highly prized fur pelts for blankets, beads and other handicrafts made by the tribe. The French traders respected the Native Americans and the trade arrangements worked well. The Sokokis Indians living in the area were led by chief named Captain Sandy (also called Captain Sunday).

The first white settler in the Cornish area was a fur trader named Francis Small, who operated a small trading post. He became fast, trusting friends with Captain Sandy. The town was incorporated as Cornish in 1794. A stage route was established along Main Street arrived in 1846. Handsome Victorian and Colonial homes were built along Main and Maple Streets and, between the years 1850 and 1860.

TODAY - There's a main street, and the center of the tiny town is the Cornish Inn. There are a few shops there, too, that sell antiques. Idiot of the Week: 23 Year old DUI Man in NH High-Speed Chase, Arrested

This week's idiot is another moron who takes drugs and decides to drive... then drives at excessive speeds on a highway. Fortunately, he was caught and he faces a whole lot more charges than those. Here's the story.

EPPING, NEW HAMPSHIARE — A Connecticut man is facing multiple charges after leading New Hampshire police on a high-speed chase through several towns and later on foot after he abandoned his vehicle to hide out in the woods near a university campus, according to state police.

Michael J. Delucco, 23, of Cromwell, Connecticut, is being charged with felony reckless conduct and misdemeanor charges of disobeying an officer, aggravated driving under the influence of drugs, driving under the influence of drugs – second offense, operating after suspension – DUI conviction, resisting arrest or detention, and disorderly conduct. He also received a civil violation for reckless operation.

State police said the pursuit began Tuesday at 6:36 p.m. after officers received a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) information from the Strafford County sheriff’s office regarding a driver who fled from an attempted traffic stop by the Lee Police Department.

The same driver, according to police, also fled after causing a crash that resulted in property damage in Rochester.

State police trooper Matthew Dushame spotted the vehicle, a black 2000 Mercedes ML320, traveling south on Route 125 in Epping. Police said Dushame attempted to stop the Mercedes, but Delucco continued at a high rate of speed and exhibited erratic operation, eventually going onto Route 101 westbound and Interstate 93 northbound.

Michael J. Delucco, 23, of Cromwell, Connecticut, was arrested after a police pursuit in multiple New Hampshire communities. Police said the pursuit ended on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University in Hooksett, where Delucco reached a dead-end road. Delucco, according to police, abandoned the vehicle and then ran off into a wooded area.

Hero of the Week: Stony, K9 of the MD Prince George's County Police

This week's hero of the week post is a memorial tribute to a police dog who served the Maryland Prince George's County Police Department and got to retire. Stony the German Shepherd passed at the beginning of July, 2024. Here's the story from the PG County Police.

 Stony, K9 of the MD Prince George's County Police Passed

The Prince George's Police Department has learned that retired K9 Stony, who was enjoying retirement with his lifelong partner Cpl. McKinniss, has passed away.

Stony joined the PGPD in 2013 and helped apprehend numerous criminals and recover evidence. He was described by the PGPD as a "faithful, loyal partner and family member." He was 12 when he passed away. "Our hearts are heavy at the recent passing of Canine “Stony” of the Prince Georges' County, Maryland Police Department, the PG County Police Facebook page noted.

At the time of his passing Canine “Stony” was enjoying retirement with his lifelong partner Cpl. McKinniss, of the Prince George’s County Police Department, Special Operation Division Canine Section.

Canine “Stony” joined the Prince George’s County Police Department in 2013. Upon joining the Prince George’s County Police Department, “Stony” assisted with the apprehension of criminals and recovery of evidence, all while ensuring the safety of the citizens of Prince George’s County.

Canine “Stony” was a faithful, loyal partner and family member of the Prince George’s County Police Department, Special Operations Division Canine Section, and will truly be missed.

Canine “Stony” was 12 years old at the time of his passing.

X-ray vision chip gives phones 'Superman' power to view objects through walls

Science has been influenced by my favorite hero, Superman. There's new imager chip that uses radio waves between the microwave and infrared bands of the electromagnetic spectrum that can "see" through some solid surfaces, like X-ray vision!  The applications may later include:  detecting the contents of envelopes or packages, or could be used to find studs, wires or cracked pipes behind walls.  Today's blog is about the new technology!

Researchers have developed an imaging chip for mobile devices that uses high-frequency radio waves to ‘see’ through objects.

Scientists have developed an imaging chip that could equip future smartphones with "Superman-inspired" X-ray vision — albeit operating within a much more limited range than the caped Kryptonian superhero.

The experimental chip consists of an array of three sensor pixels that emit and receive high-frequency radio signals in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Signals reflected back from the target object are then amplified and mixed by onboard components, enabling outlines of the object to be viewed on a display.

In tests, the chip could detect an object behind cardboard at a distance of around 0.39 inches (1 centimeter). The researchers published their findings Jan. 5 in the journal IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology.

It took 15 years of work — and an improvement in pixel performance by 100 million times — to make the chip small enough to fit in a mobile device, the researchers said in a statement. In the future, smartphones equipped with the chip may be capable of detecting the contents of envelopes or packages, or could be used to find studs, wires or cracked pipes behind walls.

"We designed the chip without lenses or optics so that it could fit into a mobile device. The pixels, which create images by detecting signals reflected from a target object, have the shape of a 0.5-mm square, about the size of a grain of sand," said co-author of the paper Wooyeol Choi, assistant professor of electrical engineering at Seoul National University, in the statement.

Beyond making it possible to peer through walls and inside envelopes, the new imaging tech may find applications in medicine and healthcare, the researchers said. They likened the technology to that already used in passenger scanners found at airports — though they noted that their imager chip does not use microwaves.

Instead, the imager chip uses 300 GHz signals in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band of the electromagnetic spectrum. These sit between the microwave and infrared bands and are considered safe for humans.

"This technology is like Superman’s X-ray vision. Of course, we use signals at 200 gigahertz to 400 gigahertz instead of X-rays, which can be harmful,” said Kenneth O, professor of electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas, in the statement

Also unlike Superman’s X-ray vision, the imaging tech used in the chip can only be used at very close range — approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) away from the object being scanned. This means that thieves wouldn’t be able to covertly scan the contents of your bag or pockets without your knowledge, the researchers said.

The next iteration of the chip will be designed to scan objects from a little further away — up to 5 inches (12.7 cm) — making it better at capturing small objects.

RESEARCH: A sound-suppressing silk can create quiet spaces

 Researchers engineered a hair-thin fabric to create a lightweight, compact, and efficient mechanism to reduce noise transmission in a large room. Here's the incredible story about something that anyone who lives in a noisy area would want to have for their curtains!

This sound-suppressing silk can create quiet spaces

 We are living in a very noisy world. From the hum of traffic outside your window to the next-door neighbor’s blaring TV to sounds from a co-worker’s cubicle, unwanted noise remains a resounding problem.

To cut through the din, an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers from MIT and elsewhere developed a sound-suppressing silk fabric that could be used to create quiet spaces.

The fabric, which is barely thicker than a human hair, contains a special fiber that vibrates when a voltage is applied to it. The researchers leveraged those vibrations to suppress sound in two different ways.

In one, the vibrating fabric generates sound waves that interfere with an unwanted noise to cancel it out, similar to noise-canceling headphones, which work well in a small space like your ears but do not work in large enclosures like rooms or planes.

In the other, more surprising technique, the fabric is held still to suppress vibrations that are key to the transmission of sound. This prevents noise from being transmitted through the fabric and quiets the volume beyond. This second approach allows for noise reduction in much larger spaces like rooms or cars.

By using common materials like silk, canvas, and muslin, the researchers created noise-suppressing fabrics which would be practical to implement in real-world spaces. For instance, one could use such a fabric to make dividers in open workspaces or thin fabric walls that prevent sound from getting through.

“Noise is a lot easier to create than quiet. In fact, to keep noise out we dedicate a lot of space to thick walls. [First author] Grace’s work provides a new mechanism for creating quiet spaces with a thin sheet of fabric,” says Yoel Fink, a professor in the departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, a Research Laboratory of Electronics principal investigator, and senior author of a paper on the fabric.

Silky silence

The sound-suppressing silk builds off the group’s prior work to create fabric microphones.

In that research, they sewed a single strand of piezoelectric fiber into fabric. Piezoelectric materials produce an electrical signal when squeezed or bent. When a nearby noise causes the fabric to vibrate, the piezoelectric fiber converts those vibrations into an electrical signal, which can capture the sound.

In the new work, the researchers flipped that idea to create a fabric loudspeaker that can be used to cancel out soundwaves.

“While we can use fabric to create sound, there is already so much noise in our world. We thought creating silence could be even more valuable,” Yang says.

Applying an electrical signal to the piezoelectric fiber causes it to vibrate, which generates sound. The researchers demonstrated this by playing Bach’s “Air” using a 130-micrometer sheet of silk mounted on a circular frame.

To enable direct sound suppression, the researchers use a silk fabric loudspeaker to emit sound waves that destructively interfere with unwanted sound waves. They control the vibrations of the piezoelectric fiber so that sound waves emitted by the fabric are opposite of unwanted sound waves that strike the fabric, which can cancel out the noise.

However, this technique is only effective over a small area. So, the researchers built off this idea to develop a technique that uses fabric vibrations to suppress sound in much larger areas, like a bedroom.

Example of How it Would Work

Let’s say your next-door neighbors are playing foosball in the middle of the night. You hear noise in your bedroom because the sound in their apartment causes your shared wall to vibrate, which forms sound waves on your side.

To suppress that sound, the researchers could place the silk fabric onto your side of the shared wall, controlling the vibrations in the fiber to force the fabric to remain still. This vibration-mediated suppression prevents sound from being transmitted through the fabric.

“If we can control those vibrations and stop them from happening, we can stop the noise that is generated, as well,” Yang says.

A mirror for sound

Surprisingly, the researchers found that holding the fabric still causes sound to be reflected by the fabric, resulting in a thin piece of silk that reflects sound like a mirror does with light.

Their experiments also revealed that both the mechanical properties of a fabric and the size of its pores affect the efficiency of sound generation. While silk and muslin have similar mechanical properties, the smaller pore sizes of silk make it a better fabric loudspeaker.

But the effective pore size also depends on the frequency of sound waves. If the frequency is low enough, even a fabric with relatively large pores could function effectively, Yang says.

When they tested the silk fabric in direct suppression mode, the researchers found that it could significantly reduce the volume of sounds up to 65 decibels (about as loud as enthusiastic human conversation). In vibration-mediated suppression mode, the fabric could reduce sound transmission up to 75 percent.

Moving forward, the researchers want to explore the use of their fabric to block sound of multiple frequencies. This would likely require complex signal processing and additional electronics.

In addition, they want to further study the architecture of the fabric to see how changing things like the number of piezoelectric fibers, the direction in which they are sewn, or the applied voltages could improve performance.

“There are a lot of knobs we can turn to make this sound-suppressing fabric really effective. We want to get people thinking about controlling structural vibrations to suppress sound. This is just the beginning,” says Yang.

This work is funded, in part, by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Army Research Office (ARO), the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.

BookNotions' Q&A with True Paranormal Author Rob Gutro

Today’s exciting Q&A is with author, paranormal investigator & medium Rob Gutro. While Rob is known as a pet medium, he’s communicated with both animals and people who have passed. Rob’s books are in three separate series Pets and the Afterlife, Ghosts On A Medium’s Vacation, & Ghosts And Spirits. Here is the link to his website https://robgutro.com/ . 

Q: Rob, would you like to tell us about each of your series about the paranormal & why you chose to write down these true accounts?

A: Sure! All my books are about my own experiences with people or pets, either as earthbound ghosts or spirits who have crossed over. The Pets and the Afterlife series teaches anyone what signs to look for from their pets in spirit and will help them work through their grief. Being able to see your pet’s signs yourself will lead to healing and understanding that they still visit even from spirit. The books contain my readings from pet spirits and stories from others. Each chapter has a photo of the pet, too.

The Ghosts on a Medium’s Vacation series is a great combination of history and hauntings!  When I vacation, my “guard” is down so ghosts tell me their stories (I don’t go looking for them). These are my own encounters, so you won’t read about them anywhere else! If I can’t discern their identities when I encounter them, I later research to determine who they are. Plus, you’ll learn the history of the locations. Each chapter features photos of locations, and sometimes a sketch of the ghost I encountered!  The Ireland book also contains links to 1 minute videos I filmed in each location.

The Ghosts and Spirits series encompasses my encounters with Earthbound Ghosts (including on paranormal investigations) and with spirits who crossed into the light (like my own relatives, and others’ friends and relatives).  As a career scientist, I explain the paranormal in terms of energy with many explanations. My Lessons Learned book is a Paranormal Q&A for any question you can think of- and my understanding of answers. 

Q: When in your life did you realize that you could see & speak to pets and people who have passed on?

A: When I was a teenager, my grandfather appeared to me in full color about 7 months after he died (I went to his wake), and it scared the heck out of me! I learned that my mom, her father (my grandfather who appeared) and others in the family have the gift. It was 4 decades later in 2005 when my 7-month-old puppy Buzz was tragically killed by a car, that he reawakened my abilities and taught me many ways pets communicate from spirit.   

Q: What lessons do you hope readers learn after reading each of your paranormal series? 

A: Our physical life is just one part of a two-part journey. Also, it’s all about energy. In the physical we are beings of energy: cells split, and reproduce, the body heals and changes. Our thoughts are electrical impulses that can be measured. I explain that energy has to go somewhere because of a law we have in science called the “Law of Conservation of Energy.” That law says energy cannot be destroyed, only transformed. So, I’ve learned that after the physical body dies, the energy within couples with our memories, personality and knowledge and chooses to cross over into the light (heaven, paradise, valhalla, etc.) or stay earthbound as a ghost (not a wise decision).  I teach people what I’ve learned about their existence, communications and more. There’s more to life than just here on earth.

 Q: As a Catholic I am told by other Catholics that animals don’t have souls. Though some say that they believe that they do. What do you say to those who don’t believe that animals don’t have souls? 

A: I’m a former Catholic and I’ve heard that. Honestly, it makes me crazy when someone says only humans have souls. Animals are not mindless zombies that just happen to think, love and care for each other.  

Every living thing has a soul. A soul is physical energy coupled with memories, personality and knowledge of a life lived. Yes, even insects have souls, too. Every living thing does. There’s even energy in plants (scientists can measure it). 

Animals lived and died on earth long before humans appeared (and messed it up!). Animals know how to care for others, seek shelter, find food, defend themselves, play with others, make friends, and love unconditionally. Humans could learn a lot from them.  

When it comes to the afterlife, animals are much wiser than people. As a dog dad, I know a dog or any animal can sense peace, love and a safe environment, and that’s what the light is to the other side, so 99% cross over. 

Only humans are too untrusting, skeptical and sometimes too frightened to cross over because of any transgressions they did while living, so they opt to stay behind stuck as an earthbound ghost in a place they knew or died in, only to find themselves isolated to the point of near insanity because only mediums who happen upon them can hear them. 

Q: What is it like communicating with the dead? I know its probably amazing yet terrifying especially if there is an evil spirit or worse a demon. 

A: After I got through the initial scare with my grandfather, and another scare of living in a haunted house while attending college (I didn’t know it when I rented the room), I realize they’re just people or animals. They reach out to either ask for help (earthbound ghosts) or offer comfort (spirits who crossed over).In almost 2 decades of paranormal investigations, I’ve run into a couple of human ghosts with bad attitudes and gruff personalities (they keep those personalities as ghosts, but reform when they cross over).

I’ve never met a demon, and don’t really believe in them. I think they are entities from another solar system whom passed away and can travel anywhere as a spirit (as anyone can), and when they see people they are frightened by them so they behave defensively like a cornered wild animal. After all, according to NASA in 2024, there are over 5,000 confirmed exoplanets *planets in other solar systems) discovered in our galaxy alone (and there are countless galaxies, and zillions of solar systems).  We’ve already found water, amino acids and carbon in our own solar system, and those are life’s building blocks. So Earth is certainly not the only place with life in the cosmos.

Q: Are you currently writing your next paranormal series? If so, would you please reveal any details?

A:  I have 7 more books in the queue! 4 are in the Ghosts and Spirits series. One is Book 2 of Paranormal Investigations with Inspired Ghost Tracking. Another is Kindred Spirits 2, because the spirit I befriended (and never met in life) continues to communicate with me and teach me how spirits communicate with their loved ones (He also helped me solve the mystery of his death in book 1). There’s one more Pets and the Afterlife book down the road, and Ghosts of Edinburgh, Scotland and Ghosts of the U.S. East Coast on a Medium’s vacation are all in the works! I plan to publish 1 per year. 

I’ve been teaching Paranormal courses in two adult education schools in northern New England and will continue that. I also give fundraising lectures for animal rescues (who just must ask) with my “Pets and the Afterlife” lecture.
