Idiot of the Week: Someone ETCHED a Name on a Florida Manatee's Back-

 This Week's Idiot is an animal abuser.  There's NO excuse for animal abuse and certainly none for this. The deplorable actions of "his" followers continue and have now stooped so low as to actually CARVE his name on the back of a Florida Manatee. Here's the  story. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the harassment of a manatee discovered with the word "Trump" etched into its back, officials said Monday.

Hailey Warrington found the manatee swimming on Sunday in the Blue Hole headwaters in North Florida. The defacement "is just disturbing. One hundred percent disturbing," she said.

The president's last name may have been written in algae on the marine mammal's back, the Center for Biological Diversity told USA TODAY on Monday night, an act prohibited under the Endangered Species Act.

“Manatees aren’t billboards, and people shouldn’t be messing with these sensitive and imperiled animals for any reason,” Jaclyn Lopez, the center's Florida director, said in a statement. She called it "political graffiti."

Manatees, nicknamed “sea cows” because they eat seagrasses and other aquatic plants, are considered "threatened" by the Fish and Wildlife Service, after previously being classified as "endangered" until 2017. 

“This abhorrent action goes beyond the bounds of what is considered cruel and inhumane," Elizabeth Fleming, a senior Florida representative at Defenders of Wildlife, said in a statement. "I’m disgusted that someone would harm a defenseless creature to send what I can only assume is a political message. We will do everything in our power to help find, arrest and successfully prosecute this coward.”  

The Center for Biological Diversity has announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the investigation. The manatee "does not appear to be seriously injured," according to an update provided by federal officials to the Center Monday night.

Still, Lopez said, "It’s heartbreaking that this manatee was subjected to this vile, criminal act."

The manatee appeared to be healthy but was exhibiting stress signs, Warrington said. The layer of algae on the manatee was "pretty thick"  and the etching did get to the skin but didn't appear to create a wound.
"We don't typically see manatees harassed like that," she said. "I started documenting so we could report it. That's why I have the photos and video in the first place."

The CBS Video is below. He is a true American. He is a hero (not the criminals who invaded the Capitol)

But that's exactly what happened when a lesbian daughter in Massachusetts did when she learned her mother took part in the criminal insurrection at the Capitol this month.  Bravo to the daughter!  Help this hero afford college by donating to her college fund. #1 How a lone Capitol Police officer lured rioters away from the Senate chambers

A US Capitol Police officer bounded up the stairs of the Capitol building, a growing mob of insurrectionists behind him. Using himself as "bait," he lured the rioters away from the entrance to the Senate chambers, where lawmakers were still debating an objection to Arizona's Electoral College vote count.

That man is Officer Eugene Goodman. Footage from Wednesday's attack on the Capitol shows him leading the mob of Trump supporters in the opposite direction of the Senate chambers after he noticed it was unguarded.

Officer Eugene Goodman herded the rioters away from the Senate Chambers at 2:14 p.m. Senators were alerted that protesters had breached the Capitol building just one minute earlier, according to CNN's timeline of events from Wednesday's riot. Vice President Mike Pence wouldn't be evacuated from the Senate until 2:30 p.m.

Helena Duke identified her mother, Therese Duke, her aunt Annie Lorenz, and her uncle Richard Lorenz in the clip as those included in a group of Trump supporters confronting a Black woman. 

“Hi this is the liberal lesbian of the family who has been kicked out multiple times for her views and for going to BLM protests to care what happens to me,” Helena Duke tweeted on Thursday before naming her family members. Helena Duke seized the opportunity to shame her mother, who she claims is a long-standing Trump supporter. "Her actions were appalling and I did not think she could possibly stoop this low," the 18-year-old told Newsweek. "I do find her participation in the insurrection extremely hypocritical as she has kicked me out of the house for attending BLM protests."

A LinkedIn profile for Therese Duke marks UMass Memorial Health Care as her employer, and Helena Duke also confirmed in Twitter replies that her mom worked for the medical center. “Over the past 24 hours we have received numerous expressions of concern through social media regarding a UMass Memorial caregiver who may have been involved in this week’s violent events at the nation’s capitol,” the provider wrote. “The employee in question is no longer a part of our organization.”

Great News! US presidents' pets: Biden dogs Major and Champ to restore White House tradition

 As a dog dad and Dog rescuer, and a medium who communicates with pets on the other side, nothing
says more about a person than their feelings about animals and especially pets. If you're a dog, cat, horse, bird, etc. parent OR if you admire them, then there is goodness in your heart. If you don't, my feelings for you are that there's something not right about you. People who don't like cats, dogs, horses or other pets have an emptiness in their hearts and don't know how to be kind to others. That's been my experience (and it certainly has been proven recently).  That said, pets return to the White House after being absent for the last 4 years (first time in 100 years) as President Elect Joe Biden brings in his German Shepherds, and the FIRST EVER RESCUE DOG!  As a dog rescuer, I'm ecstatic.

 From Socks the cat to Macaroni the pony, it's a long-running tradition for US presidents to have pets.

 Donald Trump is actually the first president in more than 100 years to not have a pet at the White House. But the tradition will be reinstated when President-elect Joe Biden moves in with his German shepherds Champ and Major - with the latter making history as the first presidential rescue dog.

Great Graphic Novel: Batman: Three Jokers

 In mid-2020 DC Comics published a 3-comic book run called "Batman: Three Jokers." It was hinted at in the comics back in 2018 (I believe). Recently they were published all together as a graphic novel and I got it as a self-Christmas present. It was Amazing!!

  Anyone who is a Batman fan, and is familiar with the iterations of the Joker since his inception in 1939 Detective Comics #27 (and the introduction of Batman) got to know the character as an evil criminal-type. As time went on, the Joker morphed into a psychotic clown, that killed the second of Batman's Robins (he's on his fourth as the others grew up and moved onto other identities). There's also the comedian-type criminal, which was my favorite depiction of the Joke in the 80s. 

This graphic novel addresses those character types in a pretty gripping story. I was also pleased to see that the Batgirl character was again a grown woman, not the ridiculous teenage character DC Comics had been portraying her as over the last 10 years. That said, this is a really gripping novel centered around the "Jokers," Batman, Batgirl and the Red Hood (former second Robin resurrected as a different hero). Get it!  Read it! Re-read it! I know I will. 5 of 5 stars. - Rob

Over the last couple of years, I connected to a facebook friend with an amazing talent. Denise DeSerio from Madison, Wisconsin is a freelance artist specializing in pastel animal portraits. You will be amazed at her work. She takes such care and attention to detail that you would swear you are looking at a photograph highlighted to enhance your dog, cat or horse's personality. She also recently inspired the idea for the cover of my new book, Pets and the Afterlife 3 when she sent me an image after our dog Dolly passed. Our Fun Post-New Year's Nighttime Baltimore Lights Walk!

 On Saturday, January 2, we brought the new year in with a fun
night-time walk in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood with our friends Steve and Jane.  They live there and have noted all of the streets where the best holiday light displays were set up. They contacted us before Christmas and we set the date for Jan 2 to avoid any crowds. 

 

   Well, there were not many people out at all on that winter night. In the middle of the 2 hour walk, we stopped at a take out window to a restaurant/bar and we were treated to hot apple cider and hot chocolate to walk around with. The lights were great, the company was great, and so were the drinks. 

In this COVID19 environment, that was likely the best-ever thing we could have done, and it is extremely memorable. I told Tom that this walk through Baltimore's neighborhood lights is going to stand in my mind for the holidays of 2020/2021.  Here are some pictures I took:  

Idiot of the Week: Florida Man Stomps on Police SUV Roof.. lands in Jail

There's a running joke that you only need to look at news from Florida to find people doing some wacky things. Well, this week's idiot comes from Miami and thought it a good idea to damage a Police vehicle.  When I looked him up on-line, I found an additional explanation for his idiocy (see below). Here's the story of the Idiot of the Week: 

Florida man stomps roof of a police SUV for an Instagram video 

The Miami Herald newspaper reported on January 5, 2021: Miami police arrested Cristhian La Place Torres, a 22-year-old Orlando man after he posted a video of himself jumping atop a Key Biscayne police vehicle, stomping up and down while screaming hysterically. “ I am the b--ch beast!” he yells while flexing. The charge: felony criminal mischief. It got him jailed in Miami 

With his colorful hair, violent Spanish cursing and his screen handle tattooed on his neck, Cristhian La Place Torres has amassed 197,000 followers by posting “Jackass”-style videos on Instagram.

Good Person of the Week: Homeless man rescued all the animals at a shelter after it caught on fire

 This week's good person of the week award goes to a big-hearted homeless man who saw a
fire break out in an animal shelter when no one else was around, and rescued the dogs and cats within!  Here's the story.

A homeless man is being hailed as a hero after he risked his life to rescue several dogs and cats from a fire at an animal shelter. The man, Keith Walker, rushed inside the W-Underdogs shelter after a fire broke out Dec. 18, the facility said in a Facebook post. 

 "Tonight we thank our guardian angels. The homeless man that ran into our burning house and rescued our animals," it said. "Our animals are safe and thanks to the incredible response from the community, everyone is settled and safe warm and secure." 

 The facility said its owner was out picking up supply donations when it got a call that the shelter was on fire. Atlanta fire officials said a homeless man rushed to the scene "and helped bring the animals to safety," W-Underdogs wrote. "And once it became clear that the house was uninhabitable volunteers mobilized to relocate the animals safely to the new facility. In the midst of our misfortune we rest tonight with nothing but gratitude for the community that continuously supports us," it said. 

 The facility said it often provides food and shelter to Walker's dog, Bravo. 

It is organizing efforts to help Walker.A GoFundMe that was set up had raised more than $36,000 by Tuesday Dec. 29. (By Dec. 30 it raised $55,000). 

 "We have received a flood of requests on how people can help Mr. Keith Walker, the hero who saved our animals from the fire. Rest assured we have Mr. Walker's best interests at heart, and are exploring how to best manage donations that have come in on his behalf," the facility said Monday on Facebook. 

 Walker told CNN that he was "nervous" to run into the burning building but that he knew he had to save the trapped animals. "I was really scared to go in there with all that smoke. But God put me there to save those animals," he said. 

"If you love a dog, you can love anyone in the world. My dog is my best friend, and I wouldn't be here without him, so I knew I had to save all those other dogs." 

 Officials deemed the blaze an electrical fire, W-Underdogs said in a statement. The shelter was left uninhabitable, but all of the animals were taken to a new facility.

Ancient tombs discovered in Ilia, southern Greece

Eight tombs of various types were discovered during recent excavation works by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia in southern Greece on a privately owned plot of land. 

 The Culture Ministry said the tombs date from the end of the 4th to the 2nd century BC and are part of the western necropolis of the ancient city of Elis, from which more than 200 tombs dating to the late Classical and Hellenistic period have been excavated to date. 

 Of particular importance are the findings in one of the tombs, including a bronze urn with its base, which has a floral decoration on the handles and lion heads where the handles meet the rim and a bronze folded mirror.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ELIS- AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES - 

According to Visit  World Heritage:  

Elis was built on the north bank of the Peneus River between the mountainous part of Elis (Akroreia) and its coastal lowlands (Elis Koile). The site was inhabited almost continuously from the beginning of the Middle Palaeolithic (130,000 BC) until the end of the early Byzantine period (7th century AD), when the city was abandoned. The mythical figure of Oxylos from Aetolia is considered to be the city's founder in the twelfth century BC. He allegedly took advantage of the Dorian invasion in order to subordinate the area's first inhabitants and founded the first settlement. His descendant, the Eleian King Iphitos was the founder of the Olympic Games in the 8th century BC.

The city thrived in the early historical period (11th to 10th centuries BC), during the late Archaic and early Classical periods (6th to 5th centuries BC), and in the Roman period (2nd century BC to early 3rd century AD). Elis was responsible for the organisation of the Olympic Games and according to regulations, the athletes would stay in the city to train in its sporting facilities a month before the Game’s beginning.   (Image of Elis. New Book "Pets and the Afterlife 3: Message from Spirit Dogs" Follows Amazon Best-Sellers

WASHINGTON -- Best-selling author and pet medium Rob Gutro announced the publication of his eighth book, "Pets and the Afterlife 3: Messages from Spirit Dogs." This is the third book in a successful series that teaches grieving pet parents how pets communicate from the afterlife and focuses exclusively on signs from dogs in afterlife.

According to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, sixty-seven percent of U.S. households, or about 85 million families, own a pet. "Coping with pet loss is extremely stressful and is like losing a child to me and many others," Gutro said. "Two of my dogs passed when I was finishing this book, and they provided amazing signs they are still around, as are everyone's dogs."

 

Through illustrative stories of how pets in spirit give signs to either their pet parents directly, or through interpretive readings with Rob, readers will learn how to recognize and interpret signs on their own from their pets who have passed. Also included is a chapter written by Dr. William Charmak, a licensed psychologist whom describes ways of coping with the loss of a beloved pet.

"I wrote this book to bring comfort to people who lost a pet and explain how our dogs and cats give us messages from the other side," Gutro said. He has learned that when it comes to spirits, there is no such thing as a coincidence. He cautions though that people should not jump to conclusions and think everything is a sign. "There has to be a personal meaning or connection," he said.
