I recently enjoyed a new mystery book called "Paw Enforcement" by Diane Kelly. Our friend Merri shared the book with us, and it was really enjoyable. The lead character, Megan is a rookie police officer who after tasering her arrogant, sexist male partner in the privates was assigned a police dog named Brigit. Megan, Brigit and a bomber that they're trying to catch called "the Rattler" each get their own chapters throughout the book. Megan, Brigit, and a couple of other characters are well-developed, while there are other supporting characters that play a part. The story moves along at a good pace and you don't realize how much you've read. It's really enjoyable and has a good ending. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series called "Paw and Order."
Our
12 year old Dachshund Franklin always pretends not to hear us unless
there is food involved. He walked over to the camera thinking there was food, when he found out there wasn't, he walked away and then proceeded to ignore me when I called him. He is such a Dachshund!

It's another Randy Rainbow Classic Song Parody! JOHN KASICH "GOP DROPOUT" -
Randy Rainbow is an awesome talent who bids farewell to GOP Dropout John Kasich, Grease style!
I love the line "I wrote this song 4 months ago!"
We like stories with good endings for dogs. Especially dogs who have had a terrible beginning to their lives. Here's a story from Texas where an abused dog was abandoned in the backyard of someone's home.
Abused Dog Abandoned in a Backyard Finds New Forever Home SOURCE: Pet360.com
THE STORY: When Houston resident Quincy Bui returned home from work one day in April 2015 he
found a note on his doorstep. The note read: “My dog is in your
backyard. I cannot afford her. My husband beats her and I can't let her
live with us. I love her too much. Her name is Ruben-May. Thank you."
An abused Minnie after being abandoned in April 2015
According to KHOU News,
when Bui checked his backyard, he found the abandoned dog, who was
suffering from a skin condition and appeared to have been abused. Bui
checked his security footage and saw the whole incident unfold on
camera.
The footage shows a pickup truck parking outside of Bui’s Houston
home and a man getting out with the dog under his arm. The man walks up
to the front door and around to the back yard, where he leaves the dog.
He then drives away.
“It’s just one of those crazy things,” Bui told reporters. “I don’t know what type of person would do this.”
A YEAR LATER April 2016 Update: After this story went viral, one family
decided to bring this abandoned dog into their lives and give her a
caring forever home. When Blaine and Amber Fuselier heard Minnie
(formerly Ruben May)'s sad tale of being dumped in a backyard with a
heartbreaking note attached, they knew they wanted to adopt the pup. "We
really wanted to fix the situation and give her the best home
possible," Mr. Fuselier tells Pet360.
The Fuseliers were able to figure out that the dog was at the BARC Houston Animal Shelter.
"I contacted the great people at BARC, and they were overjoyed to hear
that we were interested in her. BARC helped us in every single way. We
went to look at her and just had to take her home with us," Fuselier
shares. After Minnie's skin condition healed, she was allowed to be
adopted by the Fuseliers and go to her new home.
Minnie Today April 2016
The dog, who was renamed to Minnie thanks to her new pet parent's
love of all things Disney, adjusted quickly to her happy and healthy
fresh start. "Minnie is so full of life," Fuselier shares. "From the
first day bringing her home she has been so happy. It seems like she
knows who helped her and is so thankful to be alive every single day.
She only wants to make us happy and be around us at all times. We have
two other dogs in our household that she now calls brother and sister!"
While the Fuseliers don't know what happened with the case of
Minnie's former owners, they do know that her tragic past hasn't stopped
her from having a bright future. "Minnie has never shown any signs of
being nervous or scared," says Mr. Fuseller. "Everyone she meets is a
new friend! She is such a happy and great dog!
The Fuseliers shared updated photos of Minnie with Pet360, and you can continue to follow her exciting journey on her Instagram page.

One of our favorite comedians/singers has done it again! Here's Randy Rainbow's "GOP Dropout" for Ted Cruz (long overdue...) Randy is such a comic genius, this makes our day. Enjoy!
Our friend Karin who manages the DC Area Weimaraner Rescue shared this touching story recently to emphasize the importance of seniors having senior dogs. She said: In 2006 a friend asked if I had a dog that would work as a companion
for his mom. Of course, I have the perfect one who was just turned in
for some stupid reason! So Sage, who was about 8, goes off to live a
happy life with Mrs. L. Sage was such a blessing for her. She
puttered in the garden and stuck by her side. When Mrs. L started to
develop Alzhiemers, Sage became her rock. She would feed Sage and not herself as sometimes happens.
Sage died in 2012 at the age of 14. Mrs L was devastated. Shortly
after that her family had to move her into assisted living. During the
next few years until she passed in November 2015, Mrs. L asked for Sage
and fondly remembered her.
This week the rescue received an unexpected donation in Sage's memory from the family. It's the little things that mean so much. - Karin ******************************************************

We are fascinated by archaeology, and when we visited England we saw some of the ancient Roman ruins that had been uncovered. Recently an ancient Roman Villa was discovered on someone's property. -
From BBC News- Archaeological Find in the U.K.: Elaborate Roman Villa Found in Man's Backyard
An "elaborate" Roman villa has been unearthed by chance by a homeowner laying electric cables in his garden in Wiltshire. It
was discovered by rug designer Luke Irwin as he was carrying out some
work at his farmhouse so that his children could play table tennis in an
old barn. He uncovered an untouched mosaic, and excavations revealed a villa described as "extraordinarily well-preserved."
Subsequent excavations from the Historic England and Salisbury Museum carried out an eight-day
excavation of part of a site in Wiltshire, England on the grounds of a mansion and unearthed coins, jewelry, and pottery — and
identified a stone planter that Irwin’s family was using to grow
geraniums as once having been a child’s coffin. The excavation's leader told the BBC that the villa was built sometime between the years 175 and 220 AD, and clearly belonged to a high-status family.
Irwin uncovered an untouched mosaic
Historic England said it was "unparalleled in recent years." Thought
to be one of the largest of its kind in the country, the villa was
uncovered in Wiltshire during an eight-day dig. It is being compared in
terms of its size and its owners' wealth to a similar, famous site at
Chedworth in Gloucestershire.
Finds including hundreds of oysters, which were artificially
cultivated and carried live from the coast in barrels of salt water,
suggest that the villa was owned by a wealthy family.
The dig also
turned up "extremely high status pottery", coins, brooches and the
bones of animals including a suckling pig and wild animals which had
been hunted.
"We've found a whole range of artifacts demonstrating
just how luxurious a life that was led by the elite family that would
have lived at the villa," said Dr David Roberts, of Historic England.
"It's clearly not your run-of-the-mill domestic settlement."
'Not been touched'
Dr
Roberts said the villa, built sometime between AD 175 and 220, had "not
been touched since its collapse 1,400 years ago", which made it "of
enormous importance.Without question, this is a hugely valuable
site in terms of research, with incredible potential," he said. "It's
one of the best sites I have ever had the chance to work on." Video from SKY NEWS: https://youtu.be/b9miJmjsd-Q
Did you know that the Czech Republic Being Renamed "Czechia"? It's true. It was in the news on April 15th (Washington Post) but most news sites didn't report it. My (Rob) dad was a big buff about Geography and he would quiz my younger brother and I at the dinner table as kids. So, whenever a country changes it's name, I take note.
There are other things I've taken note as when it comes to geographical names since I write about tropical cyclones around the world. One thing is the controversy over the name for the "Sea of Japan." Many people in South Korea have been trying to get the body of water renamed "the Korean Sea" but to date it remains the "Sea of Japan." - Rob
Politicians in the Czech Republic are trying to put decades of debate
to an end by announcing a new name for the country: Czechia.
In a
meeting with reporters this past week, Foreign Minister Lubomir
Zaoralek said he supported the move, suggesting that foreigners often
mangled his country’s name when he met them abroad. “It is not good if a
country does not have clearly defined symbols or if it even does not
clearly say what its name is,” Zaoralek said, according to the Czech News Agency.
Although
Czechia has the backing of the president, prime minister and heads of
parliament, it still has to win cabinet approval and be registered with
the United Nations. Once that is all done, Czechia will officially
become the conventional short-form name for the country, while the Czech
Republic will remain the conventional long-form name.
A month
ago in Palm Beach County, Florida, 28 Dachshunds were
rescued from
deplorable conditions in a home owned by a 65 year old woman that ran a
"puppy mill" in her filthy rat-infested, feces- filled home. She was
arrested. All of the dogs went to the local humane society, and 7 of
them (some of the more sickly) were taken in from the Dachshund Rescue of Southern Florida who is doing a fundraiser to help cover their vet costs. You'll find many of them at DRSF who now has 96 DACHSHUNDS WHO NEED A HOME!!! http://www.dachshundrescuesouthflorida.com/doxies-for-adoption.html If you can't adopt one, please DONATE to help them cover the costs
Story: Beverly Louise Shott: Woman arrested on 28 counts of animal cruelty WPTV Webteam
2:59 PM, Mar 21, 2016
ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - A 65-year-old St. Lucie County woman was
arrested Monday and charged with 28 counts of animal cruelty,
according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara.
Detectives
were notified of Beverly Louise Shott's home in the 3500 block of
Seminole Road and informed that several dogs were living in filthy
conditions.

"The conditions in which Shott was living and
raising these animals was deplorable," said Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.
"Animal feces was caked into the rugs, rats were roaming the house and
28 mature dogs and puppies were running free in the home. After
examination by a veterinarian, it was determined that all of the dogs
were infested with fleas and worms."
Shott was breeding the dogs
at her home and then selling them through a business she owned, Sheriff
Mascara said. The business is Discount Tackle off of Old Dixie Highway
in Fort Pierce.
Employees at a neighboring business say she
occasionally had a couple dachshunds with her at the store. They never
suspected so many were living at home. However, employees say they knew
she was selling the dogs. They say she had signs posted along US 1
advertising the dog sales. They have since been removed.
According
to the Sheriff, the dogs were seized by Animal Care & Control and
turned over to the St. Lucie County Humane Society pending the outcome
of the case and civil seizure process.
Shott was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on $28,000 bond. She posted bail Monday evening.
The St. Lucie County Humane Society says it will be at least 30 days until they will know if the dogs will be adopted out.
