Meet our New Foster Dog: Dash!

Today is a  big day in our family. We welcomed a new Foster Dog into our family. 
  Our friend Shelley, who works with Dachshund Rescue of North America told us about a little senior Dachshund/Chihuahua mix who was in the Anne Arundel County Animal Control shelter since June 10.

   The shelter had run out of room and they had to put this tiny, frightened dog in the cat room. If we didn't take him in as a foster, the alternative was not good.
   So, of course we said Yes. 
  
THE INTRODUCTION - Our three canine kids welcomed him, including Tyler. Dash walked around the house and investigated. He found a pillow and got comfortable. He was nervous though when thunderstorms rumbled outside. 
He let me (Rob) give him a bath, clean his ears and cut his nails with no problem.

ABOUT DASH - He's 10 years old, and just 8 pounds. He's in good health, although he's going to get a dental cleaning. 
 The pet history gave more insight into him:
His birthday is in August, likely 2007. 
 - He was never trained, so he's going to learn a lot with us! 
- Great with other dogs

- When a 4 year old girl pulled hard on his tail he nipped her. The girl should have been reprimanded, but since they never trained Dash, it's obvious the family doesn't train their human kids. 
  - He doesn't know how to play with toys, but he is said to like a ball. 
 - He's heartworm and lyme disease free

Santa Brought Mack to a Forever Home !

On Saturday, Dec. 20, Santa brought our little 11 year old black and tan, mini-dachshund named Mack, to his forever home. We had been fostering little Mack for about 2 months through Coast-to-Coast Dachshund Rescue. 
Connie and Poul of northern Virginia adopted him yesterday after Rob and Tom did a home visit, checked references and brought Mack to their home. They have two other dachshunds, Joe and Kira who are both younger. 
  We've grown fond of the little guy, as we do with our foster dogs, but it's more important that the go to a good home so we can continue helping save more little guys and girls. 
   On Dec. 7, we took Mack to get his picture with Santa and tell Santa what he'd like for Christmas. We're thankful that Santa was able to come through.
   We're very excited that Mack got what he asked Santa for this year- a forever home!

Our latest rescue transport:  Heath the Dachshund a Hurricane Katrina Survivor Needs a Home

On Saturday, we picked up Heath from our friend Shelley- who transported him from Delaware. He's had a tough life, from surviving Hurricane Katrina to not getting medical attention in his last home.
    We kept Heath with us for two days and learned that he's not fond of men. We think he was mistreated by a man. He doesn't have that problem with women. He came to us with really bad tummy trouble and maybe a urinary tract infection.- so whenever we tried picking him up, he'd pee and poo... (we cleaned a lot of blankets, beds and carpets).
  Rob took him to the vet last night (Monday) and got him tested for parasites, etc. and he had none. He's been given meds for sick tummy - and to help quell his diarrhea. He also had blood tests and urine tests to see if he has an infection.  
   It's heartbreaking when dogs come into the rescue neglected, abused or sickly, and that happens more often than not. People just don't take care of dogs and discard them like useless trash when they're not feeling well. It's infuriating.

   Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue (www.c2cdr.org) is seeking a forever home for Heath, a black dachshund (17 lbs).  Heath was born on July 22, 2004 and 1 year and 1 month later, Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home and left him without a family. He was rescued and adopted in New Jersey where he lived for almost 9 years before given to the rescue. He's shy and loves to go in his bed in a crate. He doesn't play with toys, but loves blankets and being with you. He doesn't have separation anxiety and goes into his crate/bed.

   He walks well on a leash and doesn't pull. He has a shiny short fur coat with a gentle sprinkle of grey on his muzzle. He gets along very well with other dogs. (Unknown with cats).

   He arrived into a foster home on Oct. 24, 2014, and will be available for adoption by late Nov. after dental treatment, shots, etc.

When rescued he let his foster dad cut his nails and bathe him without a problem.

  This little guy is a hurricane survivor, and his last family didn't take him to the vet for the last 4 years. He needs a great home where you  will love him as he will love you.

  Heath will be available for adoption by mid-November 2014

Sprite's Adoption Event

Today I spent 2 hours at the Golden Ring Mall (Baltimore, Md.) Petco, doing an adoption event with Sprite.  - It went well once I got situated. The staff accommodated me with a table and chair near the entrance- which was good for exposure as people came into the store.  

 - I taped a sign for the "Coast-to-Coast Dachshund rescue adoption event" on the table, brought a "Welcome sign" with a dachshund, a photo of Franklin in a stand up frame and adoption materials and a description of Sprite and his behaviors/habits. Sprite sat on his bed on the table with me. 

 -There were about 20 people that came over to pet him and meet him. One woman seemed especially interested and took his picture with her phone and sent it to her husband. She just lost a dog and seemed to immediately fall for Sprite. I had her pick him up and hold him, and she seemed to melt. She asked how he was with cats, and we brought him over to the cats up for adoption-in another part of the store. He ignored them! (She has 2 cats and a dog).
- A couple of others took the info about Sprite and said they would consider him or pass the info along to someone they know. So, it seemed to be successful, at least in terms of interest. A couple of people said they'd check out the rescue as well, hopefully to help out!
