Book of the Week: Fire and Ice by J.A. Jance (A Beaumont and Brady Novel)

 J.A. Jance is one of my all time favorite mystery writers, and in the book "Fire and Ice" she brings together two characters from their own series into this novel. 5 of 5 stars! WOW. This is one of the best mysteries I've ever read.

Sheriff Joanna Brady from Bisbee, Arizona winds up working with Seattle Detective J.P. Beaumonth (each have their own series) to solve a mystery that touches both of their states. I read this large book in a week. I couldn't put it down. I've read most of the books in each of the series, so when she had them meet and work together, this was just fantastic. In Fire and Ice, as the separate investigations into grisly homicides in two different states shockingly intertwine. As Jance proved in her previous Beau/Brady pairing, Partner in Crime, when these two join forces, fireworks happen.

A Great Thriller Novel: The A List, by J.A. Jance (An Ali Reynolds Mystery)

J.A. Jance is one of my all-time favorite mystery writers, and I've read almost every book in each of her three series: The Sheriff Joanna Brady mysteries (that takes place in Arizona); The J.P. Beaumont Detective Mysteries (takes place in Seattle), and the Ali Reynolds (reporter) mysteries. The latest book is part of the Ali Reynolds series called "The A List."

Out of the three series, the Ali Reynolds character was my least favorite, but this book brought the character up to par with the others. This book had me from the start. I read this book in a week (which is super-fast for me). I took it everywhere! READ IT. You won't be able to put it down either.

Here's a review I totally agree with, that will give you an idea about the story:

Wonderful Novella: The Old Blue Line: A Joanna Brady Novella

 I've been a big fan of J.A. Jance for 20 years. She's one of the best mystery writers ever, and I've read all of her series of books. My favorites are the Arizona Sheriff Johanna Brady mysteries, and retired Seattle P.D. detective J.P. Beaumont. I recently read a novella she published in 2014 that I somehow missed, and I loved it. It's called "The Old Blue Line" and it's about how several retired police officers come to the aid of a restaurant owner/manager/cook who is wrongly accused of murder. It's a short story and awesome read. Read it!!

Fantastic Mystery: Missing and Endangered by J.A.Jance (Joanna Brady Mysteries)

 J.A. Jance is one of my all-time favorite mystery authors. I recently read her latest paperback in the Sheriff Joanna Brady mystery series called "Missing and Endangered" and like ALL of her books, it was fantastic!! J.A. Jance has 3 ongoing series, and the others are J.P. Beaumont a retired Seattle detective, and Ali Reynolds, a former television reporter turned investigator. This series, the Joanna Brady mysteries - is my favorite. She's a sheriff in Bisbee, Arizona, (the town next to Tombstone of Wyatt Earp fame- which is how I discovered her books - one was named "Tombstone Canyon"). Read her books in order- (her husband was the sheriff and was killed, so she ran for Sheriff and was elected. There are great supporting characters (she has a daughter, meets a guy who changes her life, and has deputies, friends and family challenges. 

THIS BOOK focuses on a very REAL threat- Cyberbullies who use dating services to blackmail people into following their orders. The characters are so very real, and the story made me want to read as quickly as possible to see how all of the issues are resolved.   5 of 5 stars (as usual for J.A. Jance).  Read it!!!

Rob's Review: A J.A. Jance Mystery (and bonus); Dance of the Bones /and: Stand Down

 J.A. Jance is one of my all-time favorite mystery writers. She's got a lot of books in several series. The latest book "Dance of the Bones" was another great mystery (although the folklore inserts were distracting and didn't help) - This one combined 2 of her great characters, Retired Detective Brandon Walker, and the more famous J.P. Beaumont (has a fantastic 23 books in the series). Here's my review>

Dance of the Bones also incorporates some Native American lore (but it took away from the story) and it was really a fantastic mystery with a great villain. When you get halfway through, you'll want to read immediately to the end to see how it resolves. J.A. Jance has never disappointed, and this novel that came out in paperback in 2015 was so well done. 

The only thing I found distracting were the short 1-2 page folklore stories in the beginning of each chapter. I confess that by the middle of the book, I skipped over them and read the story. I understood what the author was doing, building one of the main characters and giving the reader a feel for her background, but it was distracting to me. 

Even more, I Loved, loved, loved the novella in the back of the book which just featured J. P. Beaumont, the retired Seattle detective and his wife Mel Soames, chief of Police. The main novel references the events that happen in the novella, and it would help to read the Novella FIRST.   4 of 5 stars

Fantastic Mystery: Downfall by J.A. Jance (a Brady Novel)

Truly one of the best mystery/suspense series on the market are the Joanna Brady mysteries by J.A. Jance. I just finished the latest book in the series called "Down Fall."  It's the 17th in the series, and it has an extra novella at the end called "Random Acts" that was as great as the main novel. 
   It begins with the deaths of two women who appear to have fallen from a mountain, who seem un-connected, and takes you into the investigation as Joanna and her deputies join with another county sheriff's department to solve the mystery of why these women were killed (yes, they were killed, it wasn't an accident). The story will keep you guessing, and the characters really come to life. 
  
ABOUT THE BOOK: A puzzling new case has just hit Sheriff Joanna Brady’s department, demanding every resource she has at her disposal—as well as help from neighboring law enforcement agencies and the Feds. The bodies of two women have been found at the base of a nearby peak, known to Bisbee locals as Geronimo. Is this a terrible accident, a case of murder/suicide, or a double homicide?

Joanna starts out as a mother of a nine-year-old Jenny and the wife of Andy Brady, who runs for Sheriff of Cochise County but is killed before the election and is then accused of being dirty. Joanna runs in his stead, clears his name, and wins the election to become Sheriff, even though she does not have much background in law enforcement. On the one hand, many of the community are not used to having a woman be in a position of power, which makes her job as Sheriff somewhat more difficult, but, on the other hand, her relative independence from the old-boy network of local law enforcement makes it easier for her to clean house there as needed.
