Today's Viking River Cruise blog still finds us in a town within Germany's Black Forest. Over the last couple of days, we showed you cuckoo clocks (that were developed here), talked about the forest, and its history. Today's blog is about food. Particularly, the Black Forest Cake, and a demonstration that we watched.
SAMPLING DESSERT - Tom doesn't like dessert, but I'm (Rob) all about sweets. So, while Tom opted to listen to the babbling brook outside of a restaurant and Marti grabbed a bench, I joined Lisa, Laurie and Carter from the cruise. All of us sat at a table in the restaurant to watch one of the bakers assemble a Black Forest cake. The family got a piece of the cake and sampled it, noticing just how much alcohol was in it!

A BOOZY BLACK FOREST CAKE - Black forest cake, which originated in the Black Forest region of Germany, is typically made with a light chocolate sponge cake, soaked with cherry syrup and cherry brandy (Kirsch), then layered with whipped cream and cherries. However, this particular chef didn't seem to know when to stop pouring in the booze! In addition, she had a massive bowl of whipped cream, and she used all of it.
(Photo: This pastry chef loved her booze. The bottle (about 20% full) is to the right in the picture. Yes, she used the rest of it in the cake. Credit: R.G.)
I can't remember the cost of the entire cake, but I believe it was well over 100 Euro. Not really a surprise, though, since an entire bottle of liquor was added to it! I could only think that it's no wonder that the pastry chef really seems to love her work. She's likely pretty soused while baking.
