Dream Lifter |
WHAT WE SAW- There were hundreds of aircraft in various states of dis-assembly. Some were missing nose cones, others had seats removed. Some were missing wings. We also noticed that all of the windows were spray painted white to prevent the Arizona sun from further deteriorating the insides.
WHAT IS THE PINAL AIRPARK? - Pinal Airpark is a county-owned, public-use airport located 8 miles northwest of the central business district of Marana, in Pinal County, Arizona. Its primary function serves as a boneyard for civilian commercial aircraft, where the area's dry desert climate mitigates corrosion of the aircraft.
FENCED OFF - We quickly learned that we couldn't get up close to see the planes. There was a huge fence around the giant airpark. So we had to stand outside Pinal Airpark's chain-link fence for a good view of its 100-plus airliners in varying states of decay.
ORIGIN OF THE AIRPARK - Built for the military, and former home to CIA operation, Pinal Airpark is finally ready for its closeup.
A DAN FAVORITE- THE DREAM LIFTER - One of the planes that Dan was super excited to see parked in the sandy lot was the "Dream Lifter." The Boeing 747 Dreamlifter, also known as the Boeing 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter, is a wide-body cargo aircraft. At 65,000 cubic feet the cargo hold was the largest in the world for an aircraft, until the Airbus Beluga XL was released. It can hold three times the volume of a 747-400F freighter.
