AZ Trip #3: The Desert Airplane Graveyard

Dream Lifter
In blog #3 of my trip to southern Arizona to visit our friend Dan, we found a bizarre airplane graveyard. Dan has an amazing knowledge of airplanes and found this a fascinating place. It was the Pinal County Airport.

WHAT WE SAW-  There were hundreds of aircraft in various states of dis-assembly. Some were missing nose cones, others had seats removed. Some were missing wings. We also noticed that all of the windows were spray painted white to prevent the Arizona sun from further deteriorating the insides.

WHAT IS THE PINAL AIRPARK? - Pinal Airpark is a county-owned, public-use airport located 8 miles northwest of the central business district of Marana, in Pinal County, Arizona. Its primary function serves as a boneyard for civilian commercial aircraft, where the area's dry desert climate mitigates corrosion of the aircraft.

FENCED OFF - We quickly learned that we couldn't get up close to see the planes. There was a huge fence around the giant airpark.  So we had to stand outside Pinal Airpark's chain-link fence for a good view of its 100-plus airliners in varying states of decay.

ORIGIN OF THE AIRPARK - Built for the military, and former home to CIA operation, Pinal Airpark is finally ready for its closeup.

A DAN FAVORITE- THE DREAM LIFTER - One of the planes that Dan was super excited to see parked in the sandy lot was the "Dream Lifter." The Boeing 747 Dreamlifter, also known as the Boeing 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter, is a wide-body cargo aircraft. At 65,000 cubic feet the cargo hold was the largest in the world for an aircraft, until the Airbus Beluga XL was released. It can hold three times the volume of a 747-400F freighter.

WHAT DID THE DREAM LIFTER TRANSPORT - The plane is used exclusively for transporting parts and components for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner from all over the world to Boeing's assembly plants. The Dreamlifter was introduced in 2007, for the purpose of carrying oversized cargo.
