The polar vortex (or Vortices) Explained Simply!

Whenever there is an outbreak of frigid Arctic air, you'll hear newscasters shout "it's the Polar Vortex!" Well, there are actually 2 of them. One in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) where we live, and one in the upper atmosphere (stratosphere), starting 5 miles up and extending higher. This wonderful article that explains them simply appeared on NOAA's Climate. Gov. It's easy to understand and easy to read... then you can amaze your friends with the correct information about what a "polar vortex" (or vortices) really means. READ ON

If you’re a meteorologist hearing the term, you would also grumble a bit at that headline because the polar vortex doesn’t come and go. It’s not “here” because it’s always there in our atmosphere, spinning around the winter hemispheres (Footnote #1).

Look up as you walk. Way up.
In scientific papers reaching back to the 1940s, polar vortex generally refers to the atmospheric circulation in the stratosphere, not the troposphere. In polar regions, the bottom edge of the stratosphere starts about 5 miles above the ground and extends upwards to around 30 miles. The troposphere is the layer between the ground and the stratosphere, and is where we work and play.

Darryn Waugh and colleagues did a great job covering the history of the polar vortex in this article from a couple years ago. In it, they point out that although knowledge of a stratospheric vortex extends back to the late 1940s, it was later on (1970s to 2000s) that the term “polar vortex” was more frequently used to describe weather closer to the surface. This is why they recommend that folks refer to the tropospheric polar vortex or the stratospheric polar vortex. These vortexes are different!

They’re different, but there are times when the two polar vortexes are in similar positions and are more strongly linked. Let me explain how the troposphere and stratosphere are different, and then we’ll talk about those special times.

In the troposphere: the low road
Weather in the troposphere can be a bit messy, but colder air tends to be relegated closer to the pole while warmer air resides in the Tropics. Between them are the middle (mid-) latitudes, where warmer and colder air often clash and do battle. It's quite uncomfortable going from 70°F one day to 30°F the next, so we forgive you for wanting to yell “polar vortex!” because yikes! [but please don’t] However, the rapid changes in temperature can simply be described by the passage of a weather front, a sharp boundary between different air masses.

Thus, the tropospheric polar vortex is a slightly wordier way to describe the separation between the generally colder air to the north and the warmer air to the south. The edge of the vortex is characterized by a jet stream or river of fast flowing air that separates the air masses. The jet appears very sinuous on the map below (red/purple shading indicates the fastest winds) and sort of looks like a snake slithering around the hemisphere. (That analogy gave me the creeps too. Sorry!).

When the tropospheric polar vortex expands, and the jet stream slides to the south, it will increase cold air outbreaks (Footnote #2). But the vortex can also contract, with the jet stream moving north, which means warmer weather where you live (we saw this happening over the U.S. and Eurasia during parts of December 2019 and January 2020).

In the stratosphere: the high road
Then there is the stratosphere, which most of the time could not care less about what is happening near the surface. The stratosphere is a quieter, generally much less exciting place than the troposphere. The stratospheric polar vortex edge is located where the strongest winds occur, another jet stream (a jet that is at much higher altitude) that sort of just hums along without the messy frontal clashes that happen in the troposphere. It’s kind of just chill with air flowing along in a more or less concentric circle around the pole.

Sometimes the stratospheric vortex is doing its own thing, whirling around, and then—all of a sudden—the troposphere might start whacking the stratosphere from below! Hey! Mind your own business, troposphere! That really hurts! (important caveat in Footnote #3)

This jostling usually happens during the winter. The atmospheric circulation in the troposphere can get wild enough that it will shove momentum and heat upward into the stratosphere, which, understandably, can upset the stratospheric polar vortex. And, woo boy, you do NOT want to mess with the stratospheric polar vortex. Sometimes the stratospheric winds will simply weaken or strengthen, but when the stratosphere gets really upset, it will literally break down in an epic tantrum: A Sudden Stratospheric Warming.

These are also the times when scientists and forecasters start excitedly talking about the polar vortex to their friends. Mainly it’s because these events are highly disruptive to the planetary circulation and are times when the breakdown in the stratospheric vortex can weaken the tropospheric vortex. Alternate routes
Below is an image showing pressure departures averaged over the Arctic during a sudden warming event in early 2013. The red shading in early to mid-January 2013 is vertical, which indicates that a weaker vortex (and above-average pressures) extends all the way from the surface (bottom edge) through the stratosphere (top edge). Then, from mid-January onwards, the weaker vortex (red shading) descends from the stratosphere into the troposphere (the blue shading indicates lower pressures or where the vortex is stronger than normal).

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings and other instances when the stratospheric polar vortex weakens can influence the tropospheric circulation and increase the chances of cold air outbreaks over the middle latitudes (and warmer conditions near the Arctic). These surface impacts are not a given – climate forecasts are probabilistic for a reason. The variability from event to event can make it challenging to incorporate these impacts into forecasts (Footnote #4).

The stratospheric polar vortex can also strengthen, which counterintuitively (polar strengthening!) may actually mean above-average temperatures for parts of North America and Eurasia. In fact, it’s possible that the strengthening of the stratospheric polar vortex has loaded the dice in favor of a more mild winter (December 2019- January 2020). In cases such as these, we gently suggest that you take off your sweater.

Fireman Friday: Fighting Fires in Frigid Katovik, Alaska

On February 7, 2020 at 3 a.m. local time in Alaska, firefighters were battling a blaze in the tiny village of Katovik. A video was posted on Twitter of a new school on fire in the village of Kaktovik. The poster said "Our new gym is gone. Fire is spreading to the only school we have. Freezing temps, local firefighters trying their best to fight the fire. Equipment & hoses, air tanks keep freezing."
Another Twitter user, Rick Thoman, a Climate specialist noted the temperature at the time was "Minus 33 Fahrenheit with 10-15 mph west winds."

In 2018, more than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaska village of Kaktovik on the Beaufort Sea last year to see polar bears in the wild, Alaska's Energy Desk reported. In recent years as polar bears have been spending more time on land than on diminishing Arctic sea ice. The far north community is located on north shore of Barter Island on the Beaufort Sea coast in an area where rapid global warming has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat of polar bears. As ice has receded to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.

In the News: Roman artifacts found at Llanwern housing development

We love archaeology and it seems that there are new finds in the United Kingdom every year. Recently, BBC News reported a find of an ancient Roman settlement in Wales. Here's the story.

A team of archaeologists have found Roman artefacts at the site of a housing development.
Cotswold Archaeology discovered a Roman settlement of three stone buildings which are thought to date back to between the second and fourth centuries AD.
The find was discovered at a Redrow development in Llanwern, south Wales.
The items from the excavation and archive will be given to a local museum, Redrow said.
The stone buildings also had a "well-made road and complex water system".

One room of a rectangular building contained a "very fragmentary mosaic floor".  The excavation team were on site from 17 September to 13 January.
The Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust monitored the work on behalf of the local authority.
"In this case, following geophysical survey and trial trenching, the identification of a Roman building was made, and the complete excavation is under way," the trust said.

"The discovery of the building and its associated features, including water management, greatly adds to our knowledge of the Roman settlement and land use along the Gwent Levels."
Kate Lacey, from Redrow said it was "very pleased" to share the findings and are "committed to protecting the heritage" of sites where it builds.
A talk will be also be given to local historians, once work is complete.

Dolly Parton just dragged us all for the people we're pretending to be on the social networking site.

  I know this came out a couple of weeks ago, but I write my blogs weeks ahead. and since it's Dolly Parton, I had to share it again.
    I love Dolly Parton for the person she is, her music, optimism, spirit, kindness, acceptance of others, sense of humor and amazing talent. In fact, our Weimaraner Dolly is named after her (because our Weim came from a rescue in Tennessee near Dolly Parton's home). This article about Dolly's recent Instagram post is so true and reflects her personality... and others quickly followed with their own.

This one goes out to everyone who graduated from college during the social media era and was instructed to promptly scrub their Facebook pages for any indication of debauchery, lest their potential employer find out they have interests spanning beyond the banality of their entry-level employment: You’re not fooling anyone.
And we have the queen of the 9-to-5 workday, Dolly Parton, to thank for exposing us all.
Ms. Parton dragged us harder than a passive-aggressive email from a boss on a Friday when she posted a now-viral meme depicting four photos: one for LinkedIn, one for Facebook, one for Instagram and one for dating app Tinder. “Get you a woman who can do it all,” her caption reads.
I’d be lying if I said I utilized LinkedIn “the right way,” or really at all ― but one thing is certain, Parton’s collage spoke volumes.

I, of course, saw myself in the collage. You’d never know from my LinkedIn profile showcasing my toothy grin and “blogging” skills that I’d just come back from a bachelorette party, where one was hard-pressed to find me without a cheeseburger in one hand and a bottle of rosé in the other.
And we’re not alone. The meme inspired countless other iterations. Martha Stewart, Andy Cohen, Jennifer Garner and, uh, Doug the Pug followed in Parton’s footsteps — all looking dapper in the LinkedIn box, all looking like bona fide thirst traps in the Tinder box (we’re looking at you, Doug).
The social media phenomenon is a pleasant reminder that we all have multitudes, that we’re all liars, that most of us are faking our true level of professionalism and most importantly, a universal truth: that Dolly sees you.

What does "5G" Mean for technology

I've been hearing about "5G" for a while and honestly didn't have much of an idea of what it meant, so BBC news put together a 45 second video that gives a good, general explanation. In today's blog, you'll see the video and learn a little more about 5G. First, here's the BBC News video:
Superfast 5G, or fifth generation, mobile networks are already on offer. But how is it different to what's come before?  BBC Panorama explains.


HOW DOES 5G WORK? - 5G is the fifth generation wireless technology for digital cellular networks that began wide deployment in 2019.    Like other cellular networks, 5G networks use a system of cell sites that divide their territory into sectors and send encoded data through radio waves. Each cell site must be connected to a network backbone, whether through a wired or wireless backhaul connection.

SO 5G HAS A SHORTER REACH FROM AN ANTENNA? - Yes. 5G will use new higher radio frequencies to transmit data, which are less cluttered and carry information much faster. While these higher bands are faster, they don't carry information as far. This means that smaller multiple input and output antennas will be implemented - boosting both signals and capacity.

HOW FAST IS IT? 5G millimeter wave is the fastest, with actual speeds often being 1–2 Gb/s down. Frequencies are above 24 GHz reaching up to 72 GHz which is above the extremely high frequency band's lower boundary.

This Year is NOAA's 50th Birthday! What is NOAA?

Throughout 2020, NOAA is celebrating 50 years of science, service, and stewardship. NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and I'm proud to say I worked for NOAA (I'm a meteorologist).  There are a number of office that fall under NOAA:

  • Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR)

   Established on Oct. 3, in 1970 but rooted in scientific evolution dating back to 1807, NOAA has grown with the Nation, serving the American people to this day, every day.
From daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce, NOAA’s products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America’s gross domestic product.

NOAA scientists study the skies and the oceans.
NOAA protects the coasts and beaches to make sure the sand and water are clean for you to play in.
NOAA studies the fish in the ocean and protects whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals like sea lions and seals.
NOAA does weather forecasts too!
NOAA scientists do much of this work by using special aircraft and ships.
NOAA has 2 large planes that fly right into hurricanes, “hurricane hunters.”
NOAA has 3 kinds of ships. Some ships sail across the ocean to study weather. Others catch fish so scientists can see how many and what kinds of fish are in the ocean. NOAA has ships that map the ocean floor so ships can sail safely.
NOAA as its own service of men and women called the NOAA Corps. NOAA Corps officers are scientists. They drive the ships and fly the aircraft.

Idiot of the Week: Copying a Dumb Fire Stunt on You Tube

This week's idiot is really directed to the person who posted a stupid video on You Tube that caused a 10 year old Belfast, Ireland boy's face to be burned. Why do idiots post such things on YouTube knowing that others will try to re-create their dumb stunts?  Here's the story of the boy in Ireland followed by a You Tube video of an ADULT IDIOT who sprayed deodorant into a fire... 


THE IRISH BOY -  A Belfast mother has warned of the dangers of copying online stunt videos after her son was badly burned. Her 10-year-old boy, Dale, suffered facial burns after copying a stunt that he had seen on YouTube."Got the deodorant bottle, sprayed it into the petrol can. Now the petrol can was empty, so they sprayed it into the petrol can, he leaned over the petrol can with the lighter and lit it.  "The flame circled inside, they told me it was like a tornado and the flame came out and melted his whole face and coat."

HERE'S THE CAUTION: You should never throw an aerosol can onto a fire or leave it in direct sunlight – even if it is empty. This is because the pressure will build so up so much that the can will burst (and explode if there is a naked flame nearby). ... the gas pressure increases. more of the liquefied propellant turns into a gas.

From AAA: 5 Signs You Need to Check your Car Battery

It's February and cold temperatures across the U.S. cause a lot of car batteries to give up the charge.
Cold weather is especially hard on car batteries. According to AAA's Automotive Research Center, at 0°F, a car's battery loses about 60 percent of its strength and at 32°F it loses 35 percent. During cold temperatures starting an engine can take up to twice as much current as needed under normal conditions.
   Thanks to the American Automobile Association, here are 5 signs that you need to check that battery and replace it before you get STUCK somewhere in the cold!!!

FIVE SIGNS YOU NEED YOUR CAR BATTERY CHECKED
1. Slow engine crank: While starting your vehicle, you may notice that the cranking of the engine is sluggish and your vehicle may take longer to start than normal. You may also hear a clicking sound as your engine struggles to turn over.

2. Dashboard warning light: If the dreaded check engine light or check battery light turn on, it could be a sign your battery power is waning.

3. Swollen battery case/corrosion: Hot temperatures can often cause your battery to become bloated, ultimately leading to decreased battery life. Also, if you see signs of corrosion—a chalky residue built up around the terminals—your battery needs to be cleaned off and may need to be replaced.

4. Low battery fluid: A visual inspection of the translucent casing of your car’s battery can allow you to keep an eye on your battery fluid level—if the level drops below the lead plates, you may experience challenges with your battery’s power.

5. Old age: Batteries beyond three years old can often be on borrowed time, so annual inspections beginning at the three-year mark are encouraged.

Be sure to pay close attention to your battery when the temperature drops below freezing, when the temperature rises above 90°F, and when you haven’t started your car in more than two weeks. These three conditions increase the risk of your battery losing its power.

A dog and its owner had to be rescued Sunday from an icy pond in Sterling, Massachusetts.

A man and a dog were rescued from an icy pond over the weekend by firefighters in Sterling, Massachusetts.

The dog named Max was first to fall into East Waushacum Pond on Sunday. His owner fell in after the canoe he used to try to rescue the animal tipped.

Neighbor Daniel Kloczkowski saw the whole ordeal unfold and was able to call 911 for help.

"I was on the phone with 911 when the owner of the dog flipped in and went in the water also," Kloczkowski recalled.

Kloczkowski said he tried to assist until help arrived but the pair was too far and the ice was just too thin.

A dive team was called up to assist in the rescue, but the divers weren't needed after two firefighters in ice rescue gear went out onto the frozen pond to save the pair.

"We got harnesses up front for the victim," recalled firefighter paramedic Jim Emerton. "It was pretty unsettling to hear that dog had been out on the water at least a half an hour."

Using paddles, crews were able to pull the dog and owner to safety.

Max was treated for hypothermia but authorities said both man and canine were in fine condition by Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters are warning people to be vigilant when going outside as temperatures fluctuate.

"The ice isn't as thick as you think it has been so be careful when you go out," Emerton said. "It's funny. The reaction is we pulled an individual out and we pulled a dog out and a lot of the high fives are for the dog but we wanted to be able to do and it was a good outcome for everyone and that's the best part.

Scotland Museum Time Lapse Shows T-Rex Assembly

BBC News recently posted (Jan. 22, 2020) a time lapse video of a team rebuilding one of the world's biggest dinosaurs in a Scotland museum. One of the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex skeletons in the world has been painstakingly reassembled in Edinburgh.
  Scotty, as the creature is known, is star attraction at a National Museum of Scotland exhibition on Tyrannosaurs which runs until May, 2020. Timelapse filming shows a team of experts reassembling a cast of the skeleton. Scotty was found in Canada in the early 1990s and was named after the Scotch that was used to toast the discovery.

WHERE WAS SCOTTY DISCOVERED? Scotty was discovered in 1991 when an expedition of paleontologists to the Frenchman River Valley in Saskatchewan found a heavy worn tooth and vertebra from the tail of a T. rex, according to the museum.

HOW BIG IS SCOTTY? Measuring roughly 42 feet long, the dinosaur led what University of Alberta paleontologist Scott Persons describes as an “unusually long” but violent life, enduring injuries ranging from broken ribs to an infected jaw before dying in its early 30s.

HE IS A RECORD-SETTER - Scotty is said to be the largest tyrannosaurus rex ever to have roamed the Earth. The massive creature, named Scotty, weighed an estimated 20,000 pounds — about 8,000 more than the average T. rex.

WASHINGTON — For almost two decades, families at Fort Campbell, the sprawling Army base along the Kentucky-Tennessee border, have borne the brunt of the country’s war efforts as a steady clip of troops with the 101st Airborne Division and from Special Operations units deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.

This week, the families discovered that they would not get the new middle school they were expecting so that President Trump could build his border wall. The school is on the list of 127 projects, touching nearly every facet of American military life, that will be suspended to shift $3.6 billion to the wall.

The Pentagon’s decision to divert $62.6 million from the construction of Fort Campbell’s middle school means that 552 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades will continue to cram themselves in, 30 to a classroom in some cases, at the base’s aging Mahaffey Middle School. Teachers at Mahaffey will continue to use mobile carts to store their books, lesson plans and homework assignments because there is not enough classroom space. Students stuffed into makeshift classrooms-within-classrooms will continue to strain to figure out which lesson to listen to and which one to filter out.

And since the cafeteria at Mahaffey is not big enough to seat everyone at lunchtime, some students will continue to eat in the school library.


“Most of our students don’t know what it’s like to live in a world without war, where you don’t have to worry about Mom or Pop being killed,” said Jane Loggins, a Fort Campbell teacher who is the director of the Federal Education Association’s Stateside Region, the teachers’ union for the Defense Department’s education system in the United States and Guam. “The one big benefit of this school is that we try to support all those emotional needs.”

In normal times, the Fort Campbell middle school project would have a powerful political ally in Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader. In a January op-ed in The Louisville Courier-Journal headlined “Here’s How Kentucky Families Benefit From McConnell’s Clout in D.C.,” Mr. McConnell boasted that he had “secured much-needed assistance for Fort Campbell, Fort Knox and the Blue Grass Army Depot, helping the men and women serving there keep America safe.”

But that was before Mr. Trump declared in February that there was a national emergency at the border with Mexico, allowing him to divert money from military projects without first getting approval from Congress. The next month, Mr. McConnell backed the president in a Senate vote on the national emergency declaration. (Kentucky’s other senator, the Republican Rand Paul, voted against Mr. Trump.)

Mr. McConnell’s office said that the senator recently spoke with Defense Secretary Mark T. As a guy who loves 1980s music , I'm always curious to know what happened to some of the artists who sang songs I loved. Then, they seemed to fade out. Recently, I was listening to soft hits no Heartbeat FM Radio, and they played Glenn Medeiros. If you enjoyed 80s music, you may remember this teenager (at the time) who had several very popular and catchy hits. One of my favorites was his song 'Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You.' But where is the American singer today over 30 years later? 
Glenn Medeiros a former singer and songwriter of Portuguese descent, who had chart success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He is best known for his 1987 global hit 'Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You', and 'She Ain't Worth It', which reached number one in the US in 1990.
    He continues to work within in the music industry in his home state of Hawaii.
'Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You' recently had a new lease of life, after it was used in a McDonald's TV advertisement in the United Kingdom in Oct 2019.
 
How old is Glenn Medeiros?
Glenn was born on June 24, 1970. He celebrated his 49th birthday in 2019.  He was only 17 when he became an international success, having started performing at the age of 10.

In 1986, he won a local radio talent show in Hawaii, after performing a cover version of George Benson's 'Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You', which was later recorded for an album by a small local independent label.

A visiting radio executive, Guy Zapoleon, heard the song and took it back to Phoenix, where it became a national hit.  It spent four weeks at number one in the UK in 1988.

After his musical career peaked by the mid-1990s, Glenn moved into a teaching career.
He was vice-principal at the Maryknoll School, a parochial school in Honolulu, Hawaii, and as a Professor at Chaminade University.  In 2015, he became the Head of School and Principal of Saint Louis School in Honolulu, and in 2017 he was promoted to its President and CEO.  Glen and his wife Tammy have been married since 1996. They have a son, Chord, and a daughter, Lyric, together.
