Idiot of the Week: Man caught driving with Snow-Covered Windshield

Idiots are pretty easy to spot in the winter after a snowfall. They're usually the ones that don't clean off their cars or trucks and let the snow fly off their vehicles, or, in this case, don't even clean off their windshields, but dig out a small hole to see to drive forward!!  Super-idiot, or as they say in the U.K - "Eejit."

Man caught driving with 'practically zero-visibility' in Dundee

A man has been charged with dangerous driving after being stopped in Dundee with snow covering almost his entire front and rear windscreens.

Police said it was "about the most extreme example of lack of preparation" that they had ever seen. Officers said the man had been driving with "practically zero-visibility" when stopped.

The incident took place in the Dunsinane Industrial Estate on Thursday, Feb 11..

Inspector Greg Burns said it was "miraculous" that no-one had been injured as a result. He said: "Our officers genuinely could not believe what they were seeing when they saw this car today. "This man has put himself and other road users and pedestrians at huge risk by driving the car in this condition."

Meanwhile in Edinburgh, Scotland, another driver was charged with dangerous driving when police spotted their windscreen covered in ice.

Good Person/Heroes of the Week: American Humane Rescue Team Rescues Dozens of Collies from Tennessee

This week's heroes are the people on the front lines of animal rescue. This week
the American Human Rescue was called to rescue dozens of Collies from deplorable conditions of a Tennessee puppy mill (which all need to be shut down).  We've worked with animal rescues for over 10 years and we've worked with animals after they've been removed from those situations. But being on the ground and rescuing dogs and cats from horrendous conditions takes a LOT of courage. Here's the story from a press release issued on February 19, 2021:

American Humane Rescue Team Called in for Dramatic Animal Cruelty Seizure Involving Dozens of Collies and Collie Mixes Living in Inhumane Conditions

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The national American Humane Rescue team has deployed at the request of local Tennessee authorities to participate in a dramatic rescue of more than 30 allegedly abused and neglected puppy mill dogs who are dramatically malnourished and riddled with parasites. The past few weeks' snow and subfreezing temperatures prompted authorities to seize the animals.

(Photo: Puppy mill dogs in 2018. Credit: World Animal News

American Humane, the country's first national humane organization, which has been conducting animal rescues for more than 100 years, is setting up a temporary emergency shelter where the dogs, who are emaciated from hunger and starved for basic human kindness, will be given food, medical treatment, and intensive 24-hour TLC. The rescue team will work with a local veterinarian, responders and contacts, performing intake assessments, and setting up a daily care routine as the case works through the legal process.

One beautiful dog who we are calling "Faith" is in critical condition, unable to hold food down with severe diarrhea, lethargy, and an extremely high white blood count. She is receiving intensive care with an IV fluid drip, powerful antibiotics and round-the-clock attention.

Six members of the American Humane Rescue team collectively traveled thousands of miles from as far away as California and Massachusetts to help the animals and will be bringing critical medicines and supplies donated by Zoetis Petcare (a U.S. business unit of Zoetis), which is the medical sponsor for American Humane Rescue.

"It is terrible to think any animal could be forced to live under these conditions, and we must put an end to such abuses," said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane. "Fortunately, our rescue team and dedicated local volunteers were able to help these animals, who will be rehabilitated and put on a path to a better life."

Horse Sense: Zoe the horse Only Takes medication with Dunkin’ jelly donuts

If you haven't heard the term "Horse Sense" it means someone who is smart and practical and can be counted on to make good decisions. Well, in today's blog you'll learn about Zoe the horse in Massachusetts, who has Horse Sense and Great Taste. The Boston Globe reported that Zoe has to take 25 pills a day for her conditions, and will ONLY take them in Dunkin' Donuts Jelly donuts. As a Dunkin' Donuts fanatic, I think she's brilliant.  Here's an abbreviated story>>>

Zoe the horse Only Takes medication with Dunkin’ jelly donuts

Boston Globe click for entire story

Zoe, an equine resident of Bradford Stables in Middleborough, gets a jelly donut from the breakfast chain every morning. It’s not just because it’s a tasty treat for a good girl: Zoe needs to take dozens of pills every day because of an unknown tickborne illness, and owner Amy Bradford has found that stuffing the medication in a donut is the most effective way to ensure the horse gets better. And Zoe seems to have no complaints about the regimen.

Since around December, Bradford has shared regular updates of Zoe’s daily snack to her popular TikTok account, which has close to 115 thousand followers and over 3.5 million likes on the platform. Though “jelly donut time” is short, it has proved a welcome respite for many fans.

(Photo: Zoe eats a Dunkin' jelly donut stuffed with dozens of pills every morning. –Amy Bradford)

Like people, she has her favorite it must be jelly-filled. She was evidently not pleased with a cream-filled Valentine’s pastry, and an attempt to add the pills as “extra sprinkles” to a strawberry frosted donut proved unsuccessful as well.

Zoe is truly someone with good "Horse Sense" in my opinion! - Rob

What Happens to Liars Who Fly Into England? They are Not Kidding About COVID Travel

There's always someone that decides to lie and try to get away with something, even if it
puts the lives of others in jeopardy. Those people are selfish. Those are the people that need to get caught and pay a penalty, and England is onto them. In fact, any traveler from a hot COVID country must quarantine in appointed hotel when they fly to England. Most do. For the ones that haven't or didn't, they're being found and paying a LARGE monetary fine, too.  People who lie on their forms also face quite a term (of years) in prison, too. England is NOT messing around! Excellent.

Here's the story from BBC News

SOURCE:  BBC News: Feb 16, 2021

Four air passengers have each been fined £10,000 (that's $13,906.00 U.S. dollars)   for failing to declare they had travelled from a "red-list" country, West Midlands Police has said.

They were stopped at border control by officials and were not able to leave Birmingham Airport.

Under new rules, arrivals in England have to quarantine in hotels, if within the last 10 days they have been in a country deemed a high Covid risk.

The "red list" of 33 countries includes Portugal, Brazil and South Africa.

The regulations came into effect on Monday, Feb 15th and the four passengers had been fined by midday, a senior officer told a meeting of the West Midlands Strategic Policing and Crime Board.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Chris Todd said that in the same timeframe, the airport received six passengers who did declare travel from a red-list country, who were taken to a quarantine hotel.

But of the offenders he added: "There are some people who have attempted to hide their routes but that's not worked out."

A police spokesperson said the fines were issued by Border Force. Birmingham Airport is one of five in England where people requiring hotel quarantine can enter the UK.

Those who fail to self-isolate as required face fines of £5,000 to £10,000, while anyone who lies on their passenger locator form about having been in a country on the red list faces a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

The rules aim to stop coronavirus variants entering the UK.

Can You Identify Anyone Here? The FBI Wants to Know

The FBI is still looking for people who took part in the insurrection at the Capitol. Now they want YOUR HELP. The Huffington post recently posted a collage of faces that the FBI is seeking. They're in this blog  Here's the story and photos:

IF you know anyone, Call  1-800-CALL-FBI or visit tips.fbi.gov .

FROM THE FBI.GOV Website on 2-16-21: The FBI is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying individuals who made unlawful entry into the U.S. Capitol building and committed various other alleged criminal violations, such as destruction of property, assaulting law enforcement personnel, targeting members of the media for assault, and other unlawful conduct, on January 6, 2021, in Washington, D.C.

We have deployed our full investigative resources and are working closely with our federal, state, and local partners to aggressively pursue those involved in these criminal activities.

If you have witnessed unlawful violent action—or have any information about the cases below—we urge you to contact us.

You can call ‪1-800-CALL-FBI (1-‪800-225-5324) to verbally report tips and/or information related to this investigation, or submit at tip online at tips.fbi.gov

'' Rachel Powell, the Pennsylvania mother of eight seen swinging a pipe in the Capitol building and giving other insurrections instructions over a megaphone, was referred to as “Bullhorn Lady” or “Pink Hat Lady” by online sleuths who helped track her down.

@SeditionHunters is one of the groups giving Capitol suspects nicknames. Recent additions include “Bandana Wolverine” for a middle-aged man in a leather jacket and a bandana who looks in need of a shave, and “Tricorn Traitor” for a man in an old-fashioned hat (that’s the type of nickname the feds couldn’t deploy themselves without running into trouble with a judge down the line).

The FBI agrees and is hoping that public help keeps rolling in.

“The tips have been crucial,” the FBI’s Shero said.

“We hope that they’ll

continue to do that even with new photos as this keeps going on.”

DIscovered! A new orange and black bat species

As both a Batman fan and someone who loves animals and fascinated with discoveries, this recent discovery of a new BAT  in Africa's Nimba Mountains. The bat is also orange and black! Here's the story!

(Photo: A newly discovered bat species (Myotis nimbaensis) from Guinea’s Nimba Mountains makes a great reminder that there’s flashy coloring among all the browns, blacks and tan in the bat world. © BAT CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL)

A New Orange and Black Bat Discovered in Africa

By Susan Milius JANUARY 25, 2021 AT 6:00 AM

Bats, better known for their mousy looks, can have a colorful side. A new species, discovered when two bats were caught at an abandoned miners’ tunnel in western Africa, sports showy swathes of orange fur.

The new finds “are just gorgeous,” says mammalogist Nancy Simmons of the National Museum of Natural History in New York City. Orange fur on the bats’ backs contrasts with black sections of wing membranes.

But that’s not what sets this bat apart: Three other Myotis species from the continent are similarly flashy. Rather less visible traits, from details of hidden striping in its fur to its echolocation calls, peg Myotis nimbaensis as something unusual, Simmons and colleagues report online January 13 in American Museum Novitates.

The new species was discovered the old-fashioned way — out in a remote forest at night with keen eyes studying real animals. That’s not so common nowadays in the age of sensitive genetic tools, Simmons says. Many of the 20 or so new bat species typically named every year are detected through genetic analyses of museum specimen lookalikes. M. nimbaensis differs genetically from near kin — about as much as humans differ from gorillas. Differences also show up in teeth as well as other anatomy.

But when researchers collected the first bat, near the mouth of an abandoned tunnel for mineral exploration up in Guinea’s section of the Nimba Mountains, the flashy beast wasn’t obviously anything new. While most of the more than 1,400 known kinds of bats are various shades of brown, bats here and there around the world can be yellow, fluffball white or coppery red. And there was the matter of the three other orange Myotis species. (How, or whether, the colors matter in animals active at night, Simmons says, is “one of the mysteries.”)

One way to tell the new species apart is from the proportions of secret stripes on the individual hairs in orange fur patches. In the newly named bats, the bottom third of each orange hair is black. Then comes a creamy white middle third before the hair turns pumpkin at the tip.

Researchers named M. nimbaensis after its mountainous habitat. The Nimba Mountains shoot up abruptly from lowland forests, creating little “sky islands” of isolated habitat on peaks, says coauthor Eric Moïse Bakwo Fils, a bat specialist at the University of Maroua in Cameroon. M. nimbaensis probably eats insects, judging by its interlocking triangular teeth. FULL STORY: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/new-orange-black-bat-species-halloween-africa-echolocation

16 Years Ago Today: Here's How My Dog Buzz Changed the World

Today, February 22nd, is the anniversary of the tragic day my Weimaraner puppy, Buzz, was tragically killed by a car at 7 months old. But like everyone, we all have a purpose, and Buzz, through his continual messages and signs from the afterlife, taught me how pets communicate from the other side. Buzz changed the world. Today's blog explains how he did just that.

Buzz's signs from moving objects, to the sounds of his feet walking around the house after his passing, to jingling a collar, visibly appearing, leading me and others to look-alikes, and even using music as signs helped open my abilities to communicate with pets on the other side. Buzz also inspired me to write my first book "Ghosts and Spirits" which has an entire chapter devoted to those many first signs.

Since he passed in 2005, and since the first book came out in 2010, and I was inspired to write "Pets and the Afterlife (1)" that published in 2014, I've heard from thousands of pet parents around the world. I've provided thousands of messages from pets in the afterlife. Thanks to Buzz, I've been able to offer understanding how pets communicate from the other side, and help people through their loss and grief.

Since then, I've published 2 more books in the series, "Pets and the Afterlife 2" and "Pets and the Afterlife 3: Messages from Spirit Dogs."  They've all attained "Best seller status on Amazon, so I know they're reaching people and hopefully bringing comfort.

I'm writing this today, because today marks 16 years since Buzz left me physically, but he continues to be around in spirit. You'll see Buzz's photo on the front cover of Pets and the Afterlife (1). Like your pets in spirit, he's always around, and it doesn't matter how long he's been physically gone. He's still here.

Fantastic Sci-fi book: Primordial Island by Rick Poldark

"Primordial Island" by Rick Poldark is a great sci-fi book. I heard the author on the House of Mystery podcast series and was intrigued. I love dinosaurs, and this is about a group of scientists with a security force that goes to an island where a plane crashed. The island has a weird magnetic field (which the author explains) that doesn't allow it to be picked up by satellite. I can see this being made into a great television film- The author gives insight to the characters and gets you to know them and their personal struggles while balancing the sci-fi aspect of the quest on the island. Loved the dinosaur depiction and other surprises. I look forward to reading the next book by this author. 5 of 5 stars

ABOUT THE BOOK: During a violent storm Flight 207 crash-lands in the South China Sea. Poseidon Tech tracks the wreckage to an uncharted island and dispatches a curious salvage team—two paleontologists, a biologist specializing in animal behavior, a botanist, and a nefarious big game hunter. Escorted by a heavily-armed security team, they cut through the jungle and quickly find themselves in a terrifying fight for survival, running a deadly gauntlet of prehistoric predators. In their quest for the flight recorder, they uncover the mystery of the island’s existence and discover an arcane force that will tip the balance of power on the primordial island. Things are not as they seem as they race against time to survive the island’s man-eating dinosaurs and make it back home in one piece.

Idiot of the Week; Dr. Mercola - Dangerous Conspiracy Theorist, Anti-Vaxxer, Quack, Scammer

This week's IDIOT of the Week has been around for years. It's "Dr." Joseph Mercola. He even has an asinine theory about neutering your dog.  You may know this fool from his right-wing conspiracy theories that he publishes under his website "Natural News." There's nothing natural about his "news" other than his stupidity. **WHY IS HE THIS WEEK'S IDIOT?   This week, a neighbor sent me a "warning" about the COVID vaccines that came from  him and other conspiracy theorists. The email said "the COVID vaccine will alter your DNA (it won't), AND that in each vaccine are tiny microscopic nanobots (little robots) that will take over your body."  In fact, this idiot sells tanning beds and says they don't cause skin cancer (I know MANY people who got carcinoma from sun tanning).  SERIOUSLY. People actually believe this crap.

Further, he has been BILKING people out of money with his "Natural cures" and stands against vaccines and he's made a big profit as a scammer. There is nothing more despicable than someone who purposely scares others, so they will give you money to supposedly "Keep you safe."  This idiot  tells women not to get mammograms to screen for breast cancer. Instead, he says, use his products.

As a dog dad, who has spayed and neutered 6 canine kids, I can tell you his "science" is asinine. He said "By spaying or neutering your dog, you are dooming your canine friend to an eventual cancer diagnosis." None of our kids developed cancer from spaying and neutering. In fact, all veterinarians will tell you spaying and neutering actually REDUCES cancer risk in dogs and cats.

This guy is a total Fraud. He was exposed in a 2019 article by the Washington Post and from Chicago Magazine all the way back to 2012. You'll see how much of a scammer this guy really is. READ ON (I did a LOT of research)>>>

A major funder of the anti-vaccine movement has made millions selling natural health products

Washington Post: By Neena Satija and Lena H. SunDec. 20, 2019 at 5:50 p.m. EST

The nation’s oldest anti-vaccine advocacy group often emphasizes that it is supported primarily by small donations and concerned parents, describing its founder as the leader of a “national, grass roots movement.” But over the past decade a single donor has contributed more than $2.9 million to the National Vaccine Information Center, accounting for about 40 percent of the organization’s funding, according to the most recent available tax records.

PEDDLING HIS "CURES," INSTEAD OF GETTING VACCINATED

That donor, osteopathic physician Joseph Mercola, has amassed a fortune selling natural health products, court records show, including vitamin supplements, some of which he claims are alternatives to vaccines.

In recent years, the center has been at the forefront of a movement that has led some parents to forgo or delay immunizing their children against vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles.

Health officials say falling vaccination rates contributed to the infectious virus sickening more than 1,200 people in the United States this year, the largest number in more than 25 years. Measles outbreaks are surging worldwide, including in Samoa — where nearly 80 people have died since mid-October, the great majority of them young children and infants.

WHAT TRUE EXPERTS SAY

“The information he’s putting out to the public is extremely misleading and potentially very dangerous,” opines Dr. Stephen Barrett, who runs the medical watchdog site Quackwatch.org. “He exaggerates the risks and potential dangers of legitimate science-based medical care, and he promotes a lot of unsubstantiated ideas and sells [certain] products with claims that are misleading.”

*********************

QUACKERY EXAMPLES

The Northern Virginia-based National Vaccine Information Center lists Mercola.com as a partner on its homepage and links to the website, where readers can learn about and purchase Mercola’s merchandise.  A page that was recently removed said that “vitamin C supplementation is a viable option for measles prevention.” Elsewhere on the site, a page about vitamin D includes the headline, “Avoid Flu Shots With the One Vitamin that Will Stop Flu in Its Tracks.”

IT'S ALL ABOUT MAKING MONEY FOR HIM

Mercola, whose claims about other products have drawn warnings from regulators, has also given at least $4 million to several groups that echo the anti-vaccine message.

His net worth, derived largely from his network of private companies, has grown to “in excess of $100 million,” he said in a 2017 affidavit. He declined to be interviewed and did not respond to questions about how much profit his vitamin D and C supplements generate relative to the rest of his wide-ranging merchandise, which includes organic cotton underwear and pet food.

WHAT SCHOLARS SAY ABOUT HIS PRODUCTS

Steven Salzberg, a prominent biologist, professor, and researcher at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, calls Mercola “the 21st-century equivalent of a snake-oil salesman.”

Some of the articles on Mercola’s site, Barrett and others say, seem to be as much about selling the wide array of products offered there—from Melatonin Sleep Support Spray ($21.94 for three 0.85-ounce bottles) to Organic Sea Buckthorn Anti-Aging Serum ($22 for one ounce)—as about trying to inform. (Your tampon “may be a ticking time bomb,” he tells site visitors—but you can buy his “worry-free” organic cotton tampons for the discounted price of $7.99 for 16.)

ANOTHER ARRESTED IN SAMOA FOR THE SAME

Earlier in Dec. 2019, Samoan anti-vaccine activist Edwin Tamasese, who touted vitamins as an alternative to vaccination, was arrested for allegedly claiming on social media that measles vaccinations would result in mass deaths. Mercola referred The Post to materials he said showed evidence that vaccines can be harmful, including some studies on vaccines no longer in use. Experts and government health officials say medical evidence overwhelmingly supports the safety and efficacy of vaccines. MY QUESTION: WHY HASN'T MERCOLA BEEN ARRESTED FOR THE SAME THING?

THINGS MERCOLA  CLAIMED WILL GIVE YOU CANCER.

Cut.com reported this Wacked out list of things that supposedly will give you cancer, according to the Idiot of the week:  Root canals. Tattoos. Birth control. Bras. Microwave popcorn. The H1N1 vaccine. The HPV vaccine. Actually, most vaccines. Cellphones. Landlines (if they’re cordless). Fructose. Antiperspirant. Tamoxifen (a cancer treatment). Heartburn medications. Tap water. Power lines. Burning incense. Electric blankets. Hair dye. Pringles. Carbs. “Dirty” electricity. Cereal.   Basically, everything causes cancer — except, apparently, Mercola’s top-secret way to prevent cancer: using tanning beds.

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU GIVES MERCOLA AN "F"

The Better Business Bureau has tagged Mercola.com with an F rating, its lowest, due in part to customer complaints that the company doesn’t honor its 100 percent money-back guarantee. That black mark isn’t exactly the kind of thing that tends to boost revenues.

THE FDA TOLD HIM TO STOP MAKING FALSE CLAIMS

Chicago Magazine did a large investigation about Mercola. He has had many recurring run-ins with the Food and Drug Administration. Last March, the agency slapped the doctor with its third warning to stop making what it describes as unfounded claims. Specifically, the FDA demanded that Mercola cease touting a thermographic screening he offers—which uses a special camera to take digital images of skin temperatures—as a better and safer breast cancer diagnostic tool than mammograms. (As of presstime, Mercola’s site had not removed the claims.)

Good Person of the Week: Dr. Anthony Fauci, Infectious Disease Expert

This week's Good Person/Hero is Dr. Anthony Fauci. His name is very familiar to everyone in the U.S. and as it turns out around the world. Recently, Israel awarded a 1 million dollar prize for his commitment to science! There's certainly no one I trust more.
   - And he's super-patient. We all saw his patience over the last year when the anti-science orange buffoon recommended the ridiculous idea of injecting bleach to fight COVID and kept disagreeing with Fauci and other experts. Fortunately, sanity and science has returned to the world, and Dr. Fauci is being recognized for his amazing contributions in fighting this pandemic. Dr. Fauci is truly a hero to the world for his work. His bio follows the award story below. Here's the story>

Anthony Fauci wins Israel's Dan David $1m prize for 'defending science'

The US top infectious diseases expert, Anthony Fauci, has been awarded a prestigious $1m (£717,000) Israeli prize for his commitment to science.

Dr Fauci, who was often at odds with former President Trump over how to handle the pandemic, was given the Dan David Prize for "defending science". He was also praised for advocating for Covid vaccines, and for his leadership on HIV research and Aids relief.

Dr Fauci, 80, has advised seven US presidents. The face of America's fight against Covid-19 Has US finally turned the corner on Covid? He was recognized for "courageously defending science in the face of uninformed opposition during the challenging Covid crisis", the awards committee said in a statement. He "is the consummate model of leadership and impact in public health," it added.

Dr Fauci has been the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984. He helped to found George W Bush's US government Aids initiative in Africa and now serves as explainer-in-chief to the public amid the Covid-19 outbreak of the Trump and now Biden eras. The Dan David Prize was established in 2000 by the late international businessman Dan David. It gives $1m awards in three categories each year for contributions addressing the past, present and future.

WHO IS DR FAUCI? - The National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases published his bio: Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., NIAID Director
Dr. Fauci was appointed director of NIAID in 1984. He oversees an extensive portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat established infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, tuberculosis and malaria as well as emerging diseases such as Ebola and Zika.
NIAID also supports research on transplantation and immune-related illnesses, including autoimmune disorders, asthma and allergies. The NIAID budget for fiscal year 2021 is an estimated $6.1 billion. Dr. Fauci has advised seven presidents on HIV/AIDS and many other domestic and global health issues. He was one of the principal architects of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that has saved millions of lives throughout the developing world.
Dr. Fauci also is the longtime chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation. He has made many contributions to basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis and treatment of immune-mediated and infectious diseases. He helped pioneer the field of human immunoregulation by making important basic scientific observations that underpin the current understanding of the regulation of the human immune response.
In addition, Dr. Fauci is widely recognized for delineating the precise ways that immunosuppressive agents modulate the human immune response. He developed effective therapies for formerly fatal inflammatory and immune-mediated diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis), and lymphomatoid granulomatosis.
A 1985 Stanford University Arthritis Center Survey of the American Rheumatism Association membership ranked Dr. Fauci’s work on the treatment of polyarteritis nodosa and granulomatosis with polyangiitis among the most important advances in patient management in rheumatology over the previous 20 years.
Dr. Fauci has made seminal contributions to the understanding of how HIV destroys the body's defenses leading to its susceptibility to deadly infections. Further, he has been instrumental in developing treatments that enable people with HIV to live long and active lives. He continues to devote much of his research to the immunopathogenic mechanisms of HIV infection and the scope of the body's immune responses to HIV.
In a 2020 analysis of Google Scholar citations, Dr. Fauci ranked as the 32nd most-cited living researcher. According to the Web of Science, Dr. Fauci ranked 9th out of 2.5 million authors in the field of immunology by total citation count between 1980 and January 2021.  During the same period, he ranked 20th out of 2.4 million authors in the field of research & experimental medicine, and 132th out of 992,000 authors in the field of general & internal medicine.
Dr. Fauci has delivered major lectures all over the world and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the highest honor given to a civilian by the President of the United States), the National Medal of Science, the George M. Kober Medal of the Association of American Physicians, the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service, the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, the Robert Koch Gold Medal, the Prince Mahidol Award, and the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award. He also has received 45 honorary doctoral degrees from universities in the United States and abroad.
Dr. Fauci is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society, as well as other professional societies including the American College of Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Association of Immunologists, and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. He serves on the editorial boards of many scientific journals; as an editor of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine; and as author, coauthor, or editor of more than 1,300 scientific publications, including several textbooks.

Tyler's IVDD Neck Surgery - How I Noticed it, What it is and How Treated, and Update

In today's blog, dog parents will learn about a serious spinal issue that can affect dogs (either in old age, and especially those who jump off furniture) and cripple them if not attended to immediately.  Invertebrate Disc Disease or IVDD issues are very common for dachshunds and breeds with long backs.

In 2014, our (late) Dachshund, Franklin had surgery for it in his lower back for a slipped disc that rendered him unable to walk. His surgery was done within several hours and he regained mobility.  Tyler's IVDD disc issue was in his neck (which I'm finding is easier to deal with for the dog). You'll read how we figured out clues to IVDD in our 10 year old Black and Tan Dachshund Tyler, and his recovery.

(Image: Skeleton of a dog: Credit TBjornstad via Wikimedia Commons)

HOW THE IVDD WAS NOTICED - I noticed that he was having issues walking around the block starting about 3 weeks ago. He slowed down and wanted to be carried at the end. The day before surgery he couldn't lift his head and was in pain. A drooping head, and the inability to lift it is a sign of neck disc issues.

- so he got accupuncture immediately- which helped a little. But his muscles froze up (because of the pain) and he cried out several times. The acupuncturist identified it as IVDD in the neck. He went to the ER after sleeping at home. It's common with Dachshunds (we have ramps and little stairs to furniture, so he wasn't jumping off anything). Thanks. He's on pain meds and napping (wish I were, too!)

(Illustration of the ventral aspect of the cervical spine in the dog. Credit: veteriankey.com)

WHAT THE MRI SHOWED   There is heterointense, somewhat enhancing right ventral canal content at C2-3 with cord compression noted. All of the other disc spaces have some variable disc protrusion and cord flattening noted as well. There is diminished T2 signal in the center of many disc as well, that may indicate mineral in situ.

(Image; Tyler's MRI showing the vertebrae C2 through C7 in his neck; and smaller image of the C 2-3 issue. Credit: Dogs and Cats Emergency Veterinary)

BOTTOM LINE:  Interpretation: Compressive herniated disc at C2-3, somewhat right sided. Evidence of diffuse IVDD

SHORT SUMMARY OF THE SURGERY:

Surgeon fenestrated (made small perforations in) the C2-3 disc. The Hall air drill was used to create a small sized ventral slot at C2-3, keeping the disc at the center of the slot at the level of the canal. A moderate amount of disc material was removed in small firm pieces. Decompression was complete and the cord returned to normal position.

CARE AFTER SURGERY:

 1. Activity restriction Strict confinement: This involves spending all day in a crate, pen, or confined area. Tyler can go outside to urinate and defecate. Tyler should be carried on stairs and controlled on a short leash when outside (especially as he starts feeling better!).

Food, water, and toys can be provided in the confined area. The reason for this strict activity restriction is to minimize the risk of additional disc herniation.

2. Give medications as instructed-  Prednisone will increase hunger and thirst as well as urine production. It may also make Tyler feel like he can do more activity than he should be doing, so cage rest is extremely important. Tramadol tastes bad and may cause constipation and sedation. It can be discontinued early if you do not think he is painful anymore. Gabapentin should not be needed but can be continued if Tyler seems painful at home.

3. Monitor the incision for redness, swelling, and discharge and notify us if any is seen.

MY NOTE ABOUT NECK vs. BACK IVDD SURGERY

Neck disc issues fortunately don't affect the bladder. Therefore, Tyler has had no problem peeing on his own or doing #2.  Further, there are NO walking issues (at least with Tyler) after IVDD NECK surgery.

Lower back IVDD surgery is Different and More Traumatic -  it did affect the bladder in Franklin. I had to take Franklin outside and put light pressure on his bladder to get him to urinate. Franklin also couldn't move his legs the day after surgery. I had to hold his back legs and move them back and forth to get him used to walking again. Over the course of a week (I believe) he regained his ability to walk, although weakly for the first couple of weeks.

New Animated "Dr. Seuss-like" video on "Wear a Mask" (narrated by actor Mark Hamill)

Actor Mark Hamill from Star Wars fame (as Luke Skywalker) recently recorded a vocal track for “Will You Wear A Mask? I Ask,” a Dr. Seuss-style book about the need to wear face masks in public. Maybe this will help the simple-minded and selfish people who still refuse to wear masks to understand how wrong they are, not only for their sake, but for the sake of others, too. Below is the story and link to the 4 minute animation:

The Huffington post reported that Hamill recorded the vocal track for an animation based on a book by Tom Ruegger. In the book, two characters debate about the need to wear facial coverings in public during a pandemic.

The anti-masker ― who wears a red baseball cap ― has lots of “reasons” he won’t cover his face at a local business, most of them based on falsehoods: “The COVID virus is a hoax/ Except for sickly old folks/ I’m immune!/ I read on Reddit!/ I’m healthy so I just can’t get it.”

The anti-masker claims the Constitution allows him not to wear a mask, and he even claims to have a doctor’s note. However, the mask-wearing creature won’t accept it: “Your doctor’s note has little use/ Since it was signed by Dr. Seuss.” Watch a narrated video of the story below. Proceeds from the book will be donated to World Central Kitchen, a charity that helps provide food for communities in need.

A Great Mystery: "Madison Avenue Shoot" of the Murder She Wrote Series

The Murder She Wrote series of books (there are 53 now) is my absolute favorite mystery
series. I have all of them in paperback and re-read them. This week, I re-read "Madison Avenue Shoot," by authors Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain. (Of course Jessica Fletcher is the main character who writes mysteries herself in the stories, but they always co-credit her).  This book, like all of the others in the series does not disappoint.

Donald Bain is such an amazing writer. His writing style makes the characters so easy to visualize, and remember. There are a lot of characters in this book, but you never forget who they are (unlike in other mysteries I've read where authors introduce a neighborhood of characters and I couldn't tell one from another). Bain may have passed away in October 2017, but his books are timeless and his writing style was the best. - I didn't know that he also co-wrote and took over "Margaret Truman's Capital Crimes series."

In this book, you'll follow mystery writer Jessica Fletcher as she gets talked into filming a commercial with 3 other talents. The cast of characters have a wide range and all are memorable. I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out who committed the murder, and there's also a good plot twist in there about her grand-nephew. 5 of 5 stars.

BTW, This was published in 2010.

ABOUT THE BOOK: When Jessica Fletcher's nephew, Grady, asks her to visit him in New York City, she's happy to reunite. The production firm Grady works for is creating commercials featuring big-name celebrities, and he has proposed that Jessica star in one. She reluctantly agrees.

But when one of the most creative-and despised-bigwigs is found murdered on the set, there's a long list of suspects. And Jessica soon finds herself not just a witness in a murder case-but the only one who can uncover the killer...
