Tom: A Huge Fan of Gothic Architecture

Tom says: while in architecture school I took a course on Medieval architecture which covered the the Gothic era – the period from 1000 AD to 1400 AD.  I’ve been a huge fan of this architectural style ever since.  While I recognize that St. Patrick’s is Gothic Revival, I still appreciate the artistry and workmanship.  Anyway…thought you might enjoy the piece.

I was reminded by this article that St .Patrick’s was designed by James Renwick.  We are fortunate to have many buildings in D.C., designed by him, that survive – notably the original Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall, the eponymous Renwick Gallery near the White House and the Renwick Chapel in Oak Hill Cemetery.  There is also a structure in Kalorama on Columbia Road, NW that is now a McDonald’s of all things.

Enjoy…
