A Serious Question: Hate Crimes

I heard today that Congress FINALLY approved New civil rights legislation and sent to President Barack Obama that targets hate crimes, including physical attacks on people based on their sexual orientation.
Here's what I don't understand with the Republican Party - and YES, I AM picking on them.
1) The House passed the defense bill earlier this month in the House with a majority of 68-29.
2) According to the Associated Press (the MOST Reputable non-partisan news wire service) Many Republicans, who are normally staunch supporters of defense bills, voted against the bill because of the hate crimes provision.
SO- they're saying it's okay to beat, kill, bloody and mangle gay people. Period. That's EXACTLY what they're saying. The entire party Needs to Go. Hatred and acceptance of violence on ANYONE regardless of who they are should Never be tolerated. These Republicans that voted against these protections are sick with hatred. They need to GO.
BTW- The legislation, which was first enacted after the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, centres on crimes based on race, color, religion or nationality.
